From NBC's Lee Cowan
PORTLAND -- Bill Richardson described the conversation he had with Hillary Clinton on his decision to endorse Barack Obama as "heated" in an exclusive with NBC Nightly News today.

Both Richardson and Obama shared the spotlight this afternoon at a press conference and later in a sit down interview with NBC's Lee Cowan. (Please insert link to NN spot)

Richardson described the conversation that he had with Clinton last night "tough."

"It was tough to make the call, but I did. It got a little heated. It got a little tense. But it was understood, and I'm proud of my decision."

He stressed that his decision to endorse Obama came a week before, but it was reinforced by the speech Obama gave on race last Tuesday. He cited his own racial background as a Hispanic to underscore why the speech was so significant.

"I'm a Hispanic and I felt that what he said about being a nation of what all of us being together really clenched it," he said.

Calling for unity, Richardson claimed that Democrats would be "wounded" if the drawn out battle between Clinton and Obama continued.

"We have a man who's won many, many primaries. Who's won the most primaries and delegates. Who's unifying the party and the country. Senator Clinton has run a great race, I'm not saying she should withdraw that's her decision. But we can't be wounded heading into Denver and the Democratic convention with negative campaigning. And this campaign has gotten too negative," he said.

"But I do so now just with enormous enthusiasm but enormous respect. I believe that Senator Obama is going to be the nomnee. I'm not asking anybody to get out of the race, but I believe it's time to get behind a nominee who can win," Richardson said.

Obama stressed that Richardson's endorsement provides him with more legitimacy on foreign policy.

"There's no doubt on national security he's got the kind of experience that Senator Clinton and John McCain talk about but has a set of concrete accomplishment that they can't compare with," Obama said.

"I know this man can be Commander-in-chief," Richardson said.

As for any hint that the two seated together might be harbinger of a vice presidential nod for Richardson, Obama called it "a premature ticket."

"I can tell you that there are very few people in American public life that have the breadth and depth of experience that Bill Richardson has," Obama said, adding that he would play a role in the campaign and hinting that he would have a role in a future Obama administration.

If Richardson had made that call to Obama telling him that he was going to support Clinton, Obama would have tried to persuade him otherwise, but he would have accepted his decision graciously.  That is why we need Obama for President.
'Heated' ... I think she must have spat fire and cursed like an old sailor ! That's probably the reason why she has not been seen in  public today.

Could you imagine her in the White House with a divided Congress (at best)? Could you imagine how she would react to a different opinion from an advisor ? Just like  our King George II, Queen Hillary would ask for their head on a plate.
How dare him not buy into the Clinton Rail Road Express. The nerve of him after Bill watched the Super Bowl with him. To think Bill could have been doing something much more important that day.

Way to go Gov.Richardson Glad to see that a Super delegate has heard enough of the Clinton smear campaign. It was a truly touching words he spoke as he gave his endorsement to Obama.
I think Obama/Richardson would be a great ticket!
I'm waiting to see a photo that shows the crowd at the Portland event (or video) - an exciting day!

Obama continues to raise small donor money and he really needs to be our next President.

McCain is making threatening noises toward China during his trip to Paris & doesn't know a Shiite from a Sunni.

yes it must be Obama.
Clinton mouthpiece Mark Penn says it's not a "significant endoresement"!  Don't feel bad Governor, that's the same thing they say about all the primary and caucus states they lose.  Sour grapes, anyone?  ;-)

Very pleased by Bill Richardson's endorsement here...
Obama/Richardson '08!!!

That has my vote!!! Wow, America has really came far!!!

It really speaks volumes about the Clinton's for someone that has worked so closely with them not to endorse Hillary. That tells me a lot about their character.
Like many of you, I was so proud watching them both in Oregon today.  The crowd was totally on fire.  Bill Richardson is also a wonderful speaker and they looked like a team to be reckoned with.  They were too people who looked very comfortable in their skins are who were ready to get down to business in leading this country.  (I can understand any talk of a ticket is premature so I'm not exactly going there, just saying that Richardson appears to be a strong asset).

Heated.  Oh I bet.  Wouldn't you have liked to be a fly on that wall.  My vision of Hillary lately has been the opposite of cool under fire..."hot under fire"?  Ironic about that red phone ad...

Si se puede!
Fired up here in Connecticut
Hey Governor!  How much money did you get from Obama's Hope Fund for your campaign debt?

I can't believe I ever supported your candidacy.  You decided to endorse a man proven to be a duplicitous liar and a fraud, whose campaign is staffed and endorsed by anti-semites and bigots.  You are endorsing a man who violates the central premise of his campaign by taking lobbyist money through the back door while putting on a false pose of purity.  This is a man whose campaign uses the race card like a hammer to brand people you know and have worked with as racist when you know damn well they aren't.

You do know he can't win in November right?  Last I checked there isn't much demand on the lecture circuit for VP candidates from losing tickets.  But good luck to you on that.

I was mistaken about you sir.  Apparently your judgement is as faulty as your candidate's.  What a disappointment.

Oh, and in case you forgot; there are still hundreds of delegates unallotted, and millions of people who have yet to vote.  What is with Obama supporters and their need to end the race so soon?  Afraid of what else we'll find out, or afraid of what will happen in the rest of the primaries?  What ARE you so afraid of?  I thought he had an "insurmountable" delegate lead.

Maybe the Obama campaign slogan should be; Disenfranchising America for a Change!
President Clinon gave Bill Richardson national prominence when he served as Ambassador to the UN and as Secretary of Energy in the 1990's. And this is how Governor Richardson is repaying the Clintons.
wow, are these two trying to tick off every white american?  It's working! good luck in November!  Obama no longer has a chance.  sorry to say, but it's true.  no way should we have lost this year, but if Obama is our nominee, McCain will win hands down.
Richardson is a class act.  I'm sorry this situation was difficult for him.  He has a long friendship with the Clintons but he knew he could not make this important decision based solely on friendship, but on facts.
I am disgusted with Richardon.  We all know what he wants...A job....He doesn't care that Obama is filled with conflict about his identity, and doesn't even act like a Proud American.  If Obama wins the nomination tell Richardson I will vote Republican for the first time in my life.  His endorsement doesn't mean anything, but it is an insult to Hillary, after the Clintons helped him.  He stabbed them right in the back, for an unpatriotic person, who is a divider not someone who can bring the country together.  The division has already happened. He set race relations back, instead of bringing them together.  He should have known if he was running for President to pick a less contraversial  church .So much for judgement.
Bill Richardson  do some research yourself before putting your name with someone! Do you Bill Richardson really think Obama is a uniter? Don't you hold him accountable for the HOODWINK BAMBOOZLE remarks in South Carolina? Don't you hold him accountable for the Rezko dealings? Don't you hold him a ccountable for not a single meeting on forgien affairs sub-committee which Obama chairs? Don't you hold him accountable for anything but HOODWINKING SO MANY PEOPLE. Are you one of those "On one end of the spectrum, we've heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in affirmative action; that it's based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap." SHAME ON YOU BILL RICHARDSON SHAME ON YOU! ET TU BRUTUS!
Too bad we can't have a transcript of that "tough" conversation between Billery and Richardson. . . I bet it was heated.  HaHaHa

Give it up Hillery.  You make women look bad.  Take your hounddog home, but you better keep him on a short leash.
Don't worry.....because if Obama gets nominated...then consider Richardson's career FINISHED. because McCain will become the next pres.................and that is sufficient retribution....

sorry cant run the country on pixie dust!
well Obama and Richardson have both said Supers should vote there peoples vote, Hillary won New Mexico and won 63% Hispanics. Maybe they think consolidating could get them past those typical white people.Sad and arrogant trying to close election. Why is Obama so afraid to let people vote. His black states are pretty much done so he is trying to close it out.I hope supers dont fall for this it would really do harm if he used this on top of Fl. and MI
How could Hillary not not be? It was her husband who gave Richardson all those dimplomatic appointments. But its Ok Richard we understood...we know you want to possibly run in 2012 or be the next Secretary Of State. Good Luck!
Richardson's endorsement will surely secure a majority of the undecided voters for Obama. It will make it difficult, if not impossible, for Hillary to win the nomination. I guess it's time to prepare for November by Hillary to unite the party and for Democrats to win the Whitehouse. Enough is enough.
Richardson was an un known before Bill Clinton gave in positions in his cabinet. Richardson is not going with the will of the people of New Mexico. Hillary won New Mexico. Richards is not a loyal person. Did Obama promise him the VP job to get the Hispanic vote? If Obama gets the nomination my friends, family  and I will vote for McCain. We need someone with experience.
Thank God. Let's get this thing back on track and direct the energy where it belongs -- to defeating McCain, claiming a Democratic majority in Congress and ending the bipartisan impasse.

This has gone on way too long. And I don't mean merely the nomination process but the stagnant inbred politics of old guard Washington. It's time for the old dinosaurs to die off and make way for the next generation. And for the record, I am a 60-year-old white woman. So stick that stereotype in your pipe and smoke it...
Dera Governor Richardson,

Today I am ashamed to say that I held you in high esteem as a politician and as a person.

However, your endorsement of the unpatriotic, race baiting, un-Christian and poor judgment led (Rezko, state appointments, 130 sidestepping "present" votes, 6 oops votes, suspect earmarks and REV. WRIGHT) Barack Obama makes me question your judgment.

The Obama campaign has race baited since Iowa and all of us in the African American community know it.

In addition, 20 years of attending and being under the mantle of the ministry of an American hater tells me that Obama lacks judgment for leading this country.

Were you paid off like other superdelegates with contributions to your upcoming campaigns or promised a VP or Sec of State position?

Either way you have joined the list of non-thinking Americans and shown all Americans that you like Obama talk of a new political order; however, you do not live the new order you speak.

I am ashamed of you, but maybe this is why your candidacy did not take off to Americans, they saw through you like I see thorough you now.

God Bless America
I'd be more interested to know what you talked to Obama about Bill.

What did he bribe you with?
I'll bet Richardson's conversation with Hillary was heated. She's begining to realize that since Florida and Michigan aren't holding "re-do" primary elections, she has no credible route to the nomination. Richardson's prominent and well timed endorsement of Obama is just the latest nail in the coffin of the Clinton Campaign. Quick, someone get the siver bullet and finish her off!
IN THE FIRST PLACE: Senator Obama did not bring up the issue of race. He is the front-runner so why would he cause such a distraction? SECONDLY: Did Rev. Wright lie about anything he said? Was it a lie?
He spoke the truth so there is nothing to explain and nothing to apologize for. David Duke and the KKK have made hateful statements towards Blacks for years. THIRD: Hispanics beware; this is what happens when someone other than a member of the White race runs for the highest office in the land. Senator Obama is guilty of NOTHING and; he's just as White as he is Black. It's the tint of his skin that has everyone so upset! Aaron Knight
And Wolfson says its an endorsement that doesn't matter.  Apparently Hillary thought otherwise.
hillary is so much more qualified to be our leader.  Why couldn't you just cut her a break!   O'Blah-ma will NEVER get my vote.  STODGY OLD FARTS!
Because the re-vote plan of Florida and Michigan died, so Bill Rechardson thought Hillary couldn't get the nomination, so he decided to endorse Obama after Obama promised him a high position on his new adminastration. If anyone wants to endorse Obama, fine, BUT PLEASE DON'T SAY THAT HILLARY RAN A NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN, THE TRUTH IS OBAMA ATTACKED HILLARY EVERYDAY IN EVERYWAY. But seems so many people are blind in this country. Shame on you, Bill Richardson. You are a dog.
I am a white female, over 50, and I never ever considered voting for Hillary. Obama has impressed me immensely ever since I first knew of him. All the uproar about racism proves the point that racism is alive and well in this country. My boys don’t agree with my stance against the war and strong dislike (hate is such a strong word) for bush – they are all in the military. Should they see me as a non-patriot? When did it become anti-American to speak your mind? During the bush “presidency.”

Everyone forgets that free speech is a one of our greatest freedoms as Americans. bush made it anti-American because we would “empower” the enemy. In my opinion and experience, giving up our freedoms for “security” is what empowers the enemy.

Our country is besieged with racism. We need a president who can ensure equality to all U.S. citizens, and I think in particular, educational equality.

Obama can be the glue that repairs our broken country – it is time for something new. Bill Clinton was a great president but it is time for this country to move away from Washington insiders and let the new kid run the show.
How can Hillary's reaction have been "heated" when she says the endorsement is "unimportant"??  Whatever am I to believe is the truth?!?
you may want to insert that link Nightly News spot ;)
Here is a man who truly has foreign policy and national security experience AND UNDERSTANDING. It is a stark comparison to Bill Clinton's recent praise of John McCain's national security expertise given that McCain has a cartoon understand on par with George Bush's. I have no doubt that Richardson can do nuance.
OBAMA-HAGEL '08
(please insert link to NN spot). Indeed.
I guess no one was paying attention to this latest episode of Bill's outragous comments. They are probably still raking Obama over the coals about the Rev. Wright!! How come HE hasn't been asked about Wright AT THE WHITE HOUSE during the Lewinsky saga?? Hoow come HE AND HILLARY haven't been asked about RESZKO being pictured with them in the OVAL OFFICE?? Because that would put the onus on them to come clean. Since they haven't operated this way for a long time, they would certainly lose many who have been blinded by the good old years of Bill. How come nobody in the media focuses on these issues?

I'm not white, or black. I live in a relatively upscale part of Dallas. I drive to the unsafe parts of Dallas to help Meals On Wheels program. Many of the blacks that I deliver meals to told me not to be in that neighborhood at night. They are elderly african american senior citizens. The first time I went there to deliver means, I was afraid to drive on those streets. I wasn't sure if I will get back home alive. After a few days of meals delivery, I started to feel that the african americans in that part of town are not all violent people. Even though most of them had no jobs, and spent their time hanging out in the streets or in their apartment parking lots, they are calm people, just like me.

I used to get nervous when an african american male walks towards me. So, for those who cannot understand Obama's statement about his grandmom's fear of black people, when all you hear is bad things about a certain group of people, you tend to be afraid anyone belonging to that group, whether it is skin color or ethnicity. It is the samething as Jews fearing the wrath of Germans. The only difference is that a German cannot be easily distinguished unless he is waring German military uniform or gives the Hitler salute.

I am 42 years old, and I have never voted in any elections, mainly because all the candidated that we had were selfish liars. This time I am voting because I see an honest and trustworthy candidate, and that person is Barack Obama. I have contributed money and time for Obama, and I urge all who read this message to also pray for Obama, especially for his safety. I'm afraid that the Clintons will do anything to win the nomination, and I know what kind of underhanded things the Clintons are capable of committing. Those who lie for little things will commit bigger crimes for bigger things.
I can imagine Hillary chewing up Richardson for exercising his right to choose and endorse Obama over her. It must be painful for the Clintons to be coming to grips with the fact that they are not ENTITLED to the presidency after all.
Good Endorsement for Senator Obama for MSNBC political analyst to debate with ...
Mr Richardson's endorsement has come out due to the speech about Wright's remark by Senator Obama..
I would assume Pat Buchanan is not laughing on this...
I always turned my tv off whenever MSNBC has pat buchanan as one of the political analyst guests..his views are cynical and always negative especially concerning Obama...After this Wright's exploded remarks,he seems to be wagging his tail off and could not let it go up to this time..
Just wonder if Pat Buchanan already explore the possibility of the other side of Obama and not his pastor.
By the way, Wright(Obama's Pastor) remarks is simply taken out of context...
I am sorry Bill Richardson decided to support Senator Obama. I had good regards for Richardson.
Considering the teachings and ideas of Rev. Wright, how can we trust Mr. Obama. Also, if he is elected President, his team may move the US on a wrong direction.
I believe Gov. Richardson has put the party first. He realized the Clinton's do not seem to have the class to do that. The Gov. even alluded to that. The problem is there is no one brave enough to tell the Clinton's  for the good of the party , you need to shut it down and pull together. Politico.com is the only one so far to have the balls to state the fact. If the situation was the other way around, it would have been shut down.
This doesn't add up to me but I a sure the media will fall for it. I am so tired of Obama getting away with everything. He used to be my back up choice but no longer.  I also have problems with his speech and felt this statement for example is racist unto itself(TYPICAL!!!!):   "She is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, well there's a reaction that's in our experiences that won't go away and can sometimes come out in the wrong way. And that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it."
I see they don't post the truth on this blog! Just lies and spin...plenty of spin!   Aaron
HOW SAD AND  DISAPPOINTED  I  was in Richardson's  endorsement of Obama the  DIVIDER!!!   Bill Richardson, you should be ashamed... No one  would even know your name if  it were not for the love and support and jobs the Clinton's gave you and had for you.   I would NEver vote for Obama...Never!!  I'd rather vote for Mccain or not at all.  Patty
VERy  disgusted and disturbed by Richardson's  support for Obama.  How disloyal!!.. What a whoos!! Hillary won in New Mexico.   and in Massachusetts and All the big states.  If  the  powers that be are correct....Richardson, Kennedy, Kerry and the so-called supporters  New Jersey   and other states  where Hillary won Must now in front of all OF US AND  GOD  SWITCH  THIER  vOTE.  rIGHT??? hILLARY IS THE ONLY QUALIFIED PERSON TO BE THE  pREIDENT.   vOTE FOR HER AND LET US GET ON WITH IMPROVING  OUR STATUS AROUND THE WORLD AND HELPING OUR U S cITIZENS GET hEALTH CARE, jOBS AND OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS WE NEED HERE.  sHE IS THE only ONE  IN THIS RACE THAT CAN DO IT.  tHANK yoU   tODD  hENDERSON
How awesome! United States indeed!
