Obama: Addressing Wright on Easter

Posted: Monday, March 24, 2008 9:31 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Times looks at a fact that has been largely overlooked the last six weeks: the amount of outside special interest money that has benefited Obama, particularly unions like SEIU.

Obama gave an interview with Philly radio talk show host Michael Smerconish that airs today. Obama, asked if he ever spoke with Rev. Wright about some of his controversial views, said, "I'll be honest with you, I didn't have that many conversations with him over the last year just because I've been so busy. I haven't been going to church. I wasn't hearing a lot of these comments. In fact, the ones that are most offensive are ones that I just never knew about until they were reported on.

"I had conversations with him in the past -- in fact from the day that I first met him -- about some of his views. But understand this, something else that I think has not gotten reported on enough, is despite these very offensive views, this guy has built one of the finest churches in Chicago. It's not some crackpot church. I mean, witness the fact that Bill Clinton invited him to the White House when he was having his personal crises.

"This is a pillar of the community and if you go there this Easter Sunday and you sat down in the pew, you'd think, 'Well this is just like any other church.' You got kids and little girls with bows in their hair and people dressed in their Sunday finest. They're talking about Jesus and the Resurrection.

"So I don't want to suggest that somehow this was...the loop that you've been seeing typified services all the time. But that's the danger of the YouTube era. It doesn't excuse what he said, but it is to just give it some perspective so people understand."

The New York Post reports on how Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s replacement took the controversy. “The Rev. Otis Moss III, used the opportunity of his Easter sermon yesterday to lash out at the scrutiny his retiring predecessor has received. Fox News reported yesterday that Moss called the negative media attention focused on Wright ‘a public lynching,’ and he made clear that he thought the church owed no apologies.

“ ‘If I was Ice Cube, I'd say it a little differently: 'You picked the wrong folk to mess with,' " Moss said.”

The New York Daily News reports that the Rev. Calvin Butts, the leader of Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church, weighed in on the controversy surrounding Wright in his Easter homily. "Jeremiah Wright said some uncharacteristically ugly things because this nation has been uncharacteristically ugly towards black people," Butts said. "Being critical of America, that is nothing to condemn someone about. There have been black and white preachers who have been critical of America." But, he said, "What [Wright] said about America, that was a little strong coming from the pulpit. ... You can't just cuss like that from the pulpit."

And Richardson as “Judas”? After James Carville was quoted as calling Richardson Judas for backing Obama, Richardson said, "You know, that's typical of many of the people around Sen. Clinton. They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

The Chicago Sun-Times' Sweet has the scoop from the Obama campaign on the full release of its national finance committee. How long before the Clinton campaign or others have dossiers on some of these folks? These are folks are bigger than just the bundlers they regularly release the names of. "Members of Obama’s NFC have been invited to special briefings with Obama and his advisors, were given priority in getting into Oprah Winfrey’s fund-raiser at her home near Santa Barbara, Calif. and have been encouraged to travel to primary and caucus states to volunteer knocking on doors and at phonebanks."

Some names are very familiar, including ex-CA GOV candidate Steve Westly; former Commerce Sec. Bill Daley; big time Boston fundraiser Alan Solomont; movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg; and one-time Obama senate rival Dan Hynes.

The L.A. Times does some early adulthood profiling of Obama.

AP: “Prominent supporters of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama yesterday both faulted Obama's campaign for allowing a retired general and backer of the Illinois senator to equate comments by Clinton's husband - which appeared to question Obama's patriotism -- to McCarthyism.”

The AP on Sunday wrapped Obama’s “tough” and “turbulent” last couple of weeks. “Obama refers to the past couple of weeks as a tough, turbulent stretch. And why not? His foreign policy adviser quit for calling Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton a ‘monster.’ Then he had to distance himself from his longtime pastor's fiery statements, a controversy that threatened his image as a uniter. He trails in polls in the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. Obama also watched his lead wither in national opinion surveys.” But it “could have been worse,” the AP writes.

“Obama received generally favorable reviews for his somber speech on the nation's racial divide, though it didn't completely silence the criticism over his former pastor's rhetoric. Then Florida and Michigan indicated they would not hold new primaries to replace the contests that favored Clinton but violated party rules. Campaign finance reports showed him far ahead in the money race. And finally, he picked up the much sought-after endorsement of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson -- one Clinton also had coveted.”

Let a white man say that cannt even use the word.Pastor asking for money but cannt go into it cause it was streamed on line. shhhhhhh/prob.Bomy is feeling the  justifyable heat. This is one white owes no apolagy when I vote Hillary now.Come on lets get Hillary in there BIG
The Clinton camp wants this so bad they are planting people everywhere to say this Obama guy is UNELECTABLE. It doesn't help to destroy a sheep when you fail to annex the opportunity to captain it, particularly when the opponent who wins that opportunity appears to be most liked than you and has no "I own the right to the presidency" attitude.
I used to like Hillary but she is not graceful in defeat AT ALL. That is what is doing her campain in.
The Clinton's have based their campaign on race, gender, religion and now patriotism. They have stooped to garnering votes based on emotion.  Shame on the news media for buying into this. Reporter's are actually hanging out in Trinity Church when they should be insisting Hillary release her 2006 tax return, this is something which could actually be an issue in this election based on facts.
We the tax paying People of the United States of America did not get to agree to this out come when it was passed , and Now we get to pay for the failure ??? Is this what we call taxation without Representation in the land of the FREE , while the Corporate Multi-Nationals , get the benefit of this Trade policy and the ones who wrote them , by the way the Investigations here appear to tell a story of who wanted the Trade Policy by the way they tried to donate their funds to campaigns , might be why we don't get to see the tax returns ??????????????????? , see here ;  this is a form of fascism , is it not  ??

And noww e tax payers get to bail out the Mortgage mess , all connected to the Free Trade , because of all those companies that Imported tariff Free Home Products over the years , because of the Clinton / Bush Free Trade Policy , yeah what a guy making sure the Multi-Nationals make all the Cash .... Its time for a Break from the past .

Barack Obama did not make Rev. Wright's comments a race issues, because if he did, he would have been deserted. You people have no idea what you're talking about. All of you never supported him anyway, so you really no have nothing to say about the matter. Spreading lies and propaganda about Barack Obama would come back to you two-fold. Meaning: Barack Obama will win in the general election.
Rick Sanchez on CNN showed Rev Wrights sermon in context on Sunday night. It is a shame how everyone spun him comments totally out of proportion. If you see the whole thing, you will realize that his sermon is not only NOT controversial. It is fairly accurate.
I wonder, did any reporters take up Obama's offer and attend services at Trinity this Easter? Have any reporters EVER attended services at Trinity? In this age of journalism, our so called reporters seem to rely more on YouTube sound bites than actual reporting.
Any in-depth reporting of this church, and other African-American churches, by ABC or any respectable news outlet, would have included attending the church and writing more about the Pastor.
The fact that he was a marine, that he has been invited to the White House (by Clinton), and gives sermons not unlike MLK and other AA leaders, was just swept under the rug.
Really, two 30 sec sound bites was the best our media could offer...that's not real journalism...that's tabloid journalism.
Democratic nomination was Hillary's to lose and she is losing it. How can anyone argue that she is more electable in Nov when she screwed up the primaries. It takes strategy and smarts to win elections... different strategies for primaries and general elections. Hillary has failed in the first test, and is now asking us to trust us with a bigger test in November. Obama is a once in a life time candidate who is winning against odds. And those of you who are calling him racist, you really belong in the other party, please vote for McCain whoever the democratic nominee is. I and an Obama supporter but will vote for Clinton, if she is our nominee.
If we judged Republican politicians based on the rantings of the Christian right - non would get elected.  Why the double standard?
Obama's new pastor said - “ ‘If I was Ice Cube, I'd say it a little differently: 'You picked the wrong folk to mess with,' " Moss said.”

Ice Cube (who is the rapper turned actor) said "I'm the wrong ni**a to f**k with."  on his song titled the Wrong Ni**a to F**k With form the album titled Death Certificate.  See http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/icecube/thewrongniggatofuckwith.html

Now is that something nice for a preacher to revise and say to his church?  Is it?
Where was Sen Obama Easter Sunday, NOT in Trinity Church.
This is one of many Dem that will never vote for Obama
now.
What is this "you picked the wrong folk to mess with" What is that? I dont take kindly to threats and I dare say a lot of people dont. You may wish you had these folk when its time for us in the booth. I would never vote Obama now. Hillary is my girl.Tell those penn. people they picked wrong folk. Ha Ha ha I hope all Philly saw that sermon Easter streamed live. Sounded like a non love sermon to me.Typical. Say one thing see another thats Obama to a tee.
On wearing the flag lapel pin.  I remember Tom Brokaw was once asked why he did not wear a flag lapel pin.  Do we consider Tom Brokaw any less patriotic?  I think not.
Obama's mask is off, and overnight, all his inspirational speeches and flamboyant suspense building style of oration look like empty, shallow rhetoric.
The early success and cross-racial approval of his campaign demonstrates that America is ready to have a black president.
The eye-opening reality of his true identity after refusing to condemn Wrights bigotry, racism and hate demonstrates another thing: Black America is not ready for a black president. At least, not the kind of black president that Obama's Liberation Theology followers embrace. A black candidate should be just that: black -like a Collin Powell, or a Condy Rice, but NEVER like this so-called reverend Wright or any of his supporters.
Jesus did not wear a flag pin.  He was not patriotic.  He made the government, the #1 superpower in the world at the time, feel threatened.  Jesus was not a conservative.  He was not traditional.  He did not support nor follow the accepted religion of the time.  He challenged people to believe change was possible.  He asked them to hope.   He gave great speeches...words, just words.  Of course, the Bible is just words.   If Jesus were to walk among us today, how many Christians would follow him, a stranger?  One who looks different?  An outsider?   Or would these Christians crucify him all over again?
Bush was a 'born again Christian', do we blame his church attendance for the war, waged on the basis of lies and deception.  The church is no place for politics. If Hillary can't win the Primary based on facts instead of emotion, then she can't and shouldn't win.  I applaud Governer Richardson for basing his delegate vote on facts instead of political 'back scratching'and gutter politics.
I am sick and tired of fox news filled with their racist comments. Rilley you need to get some tips from Keith Olberman. He will run a circle around fox news.
Why is it that people ASSume that every Sunday was like what we've seen on the news? The news reports showed two sermons. The man preached for 40 years!! Does anyone remember when Falwell said that 911 was allowed by God because of homosexuality? What about when pastor Hagee said that hurricane Katrina happened because of the sin of New Orleans? What about pastor Rod Parsley who said that Islam was a "demon seed" and that the U.S.A. was created in order to destroy it? My point is that despite these vile words from these preachers, I bet that on any given Sunday you wouldn't hear that type of talk from them. How do any of you know that Wright's words were a normal thing from week to week for 20 years????? Especially when we've only seen two 15 second clips on the news?
How about LISTENING to the sermons in context, then you'd know that:
1. Wright actually realized that he should not have said God D*mn, because he asked for the congregation to forgive him for using it.
2. The 9/11 sermon was a reference to an interview that he heard on Fox news, and he listed what the Ambassador stated in the interview and asked the congregation to "think" about it.

You guys have got to wake up and stop letting the media think for you!

Here are the sermons:

I  thought the freedom to choose our churches and associates was regarded as too important and valuable to be interfered with.

Everyone is missing the larger element of this discussion. Which is, does any political group cross the line between free speech and oppression when that group attacks an opposing candidate for their religious associations?

Without the consent of the oppressed there can be no oppression...
Why do the comments (and photo) keep surfacing about Bill Clinton shaking hands with Rev Wright at a White House function ten years ago?  Rev Wright was one of many religious leaders invited to that function, and that doesn't even suggest that Mr. Clinton had ever attended that church or had any knowledge of any controversial remarks. This is "grasping at straws".
My Response to Deborah Greenlawn, NY - Mam I beg your pardon but I am a White Church going life long Arkansan and I "aint" never heard or seen any ministers here in the South say or act like Jeremiah Wright and I also agree with "Nocity" who said the following;  Obama's new pastor said - “ ‘If I was Ice Cube, I'd say it a little differently: 'You picked the wrong folk to mess with,' " Moss said.”

Ice Cube (who is the rapper turned actor) said "I'm the wrong ni**a to f**k with."  on his song titled the Wrong Ni**a to F**k With form the album titled Death Certificate.

All of you Obama supporters,How shameful this is, you MUST be absolutely nutty crazy to support this disgusting man Obama.
He will ruin our country.  These militant ministers in his church, how can anyone support them or Obama?
NO Obama supporter is patriotic just selfish wanting one of their own kind and I say that to the upscale whites that support him.  They are cut from the same cloth as Obama is. I don't feel Obama will be elected in the end and this anti-american dialogue from he and his supporters is not going to be tolerated by the majority of Americans.
There's nothing worse than internet-tough guys and gals saying things online that they don't have the courage to say to someone's face.

For all of you so vehemently opposed to black theology, why not take your issues directly to the churches.

Jesus did say in Matthew that if you have a problem with someone, "go and speak to them."
I can see from these comments that racism is alive and well. The sad thing about this is that you all sound as if you ar full of anger, which means you cannot be too happy with yourselves.

On St. Patrick's Day Clinton rattled on about how dangerous it was when she went to Bosnia, how she had to run from cover to avoid sniper fire. She was lying. She lied about Northern Ireland, she lied about NAFTA, and her husband lied under oath. Yet you seem to want to embrace this pair. WHY??? Because they are white??
