Clinton: Happy Dyngus Day!

Posted: Monday, March 24, 2008 9:40 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Clinton hits the trail today in Philly to give what the campaign is billing as a major speech. She'll unveil a four-part plan to address underwater mortgages, the broader housing crisis and credit crisis. She'll call for a broader government role in buying out underwater mortgages and protecting homeowners. Clinton has consistently talked more about this issue more than either of her two foes, Obama or McCain. (See excerpts below.)

Meanwhile, Bill and Chelsea hit Indiana all day today. They'll be there for something called Dyngus Day. According to one Google search, Dyngus Day is a day where guys get to drench gals in water; apparently tomorrow, gals get to throw dishes at the guys. It's a Polish holiday. Of course, what part of Dyngus Day will Bill Clinton take part in?

The newest Clinton campaign talking point to justify how superdelegates can vote for Clinton over Obama: the number of electoral votes Clinton has won in her primary/caucus wins vs. Obama. Both Evan Bayh and Ed Rendell tested out this talking point on Sunday shows.

"So far, Mrs. Clinton has won states with a total of 219 Electoral College votes, not counting Florida and Michigan, while Mr. Obama has won states with a total of 202 electoral votes."

This is the only metric the Clinton campaign has come up with yet has her ahead: she's behind in popular vote, behind in delegates earned JUST through primaries and behind in pledged delegates.

Of course, keep in mind, two of Kerry's final primary victories in '04 which essentially drove everyone out of the race (though the candidates did fight through Wisconsin) was Virginia and Tennessee; Kerry didn't carry either state. The motivation to use this Electoral College talking point is yet another attempt by the Clinton camp to discount some of Obama's small-state victories because Obama's won nearly twice the number of states. If you recall, in '00, during the recount dispute, the Bush campaign made sure the country saw that county-by-county map from around the country which showed the country in a sea of red. Obama's victory map, right now, looks more impressive than Clinton's visually.

The WSJ goes through the details of the financial reports released on 3/21 via the FEC and finds that Clinton has a big time cash problem; two-thirds of the cash-on-hand total reported by Clinton is untouchable because it's general election money. This may explain why Clinton isn't yet on the air with any TV ads.

Clinton housing speech excerpts to be delivered today in Philadelphia:
“Ultimately, the true currency of today’s American economy is confidence. When people lose confidence in the economy -- and our President’s ability to manage it -- problems become crises, and crises lead to more crises.

“So we need a President who can restore our confidence. A President who is ready to confront complex economic problems with comprehensive solutions…working to prevent crises, rather than just reacting to them once it’s too late. We need a President who is ready on day one to be Commander-in-Chief of our economy. If you give me the chance, I will be that President.

“I will start by facing our economic situation as it is, not as we hope or wish it would be. That means acknowledging that our economic crisis is, at its core, a housing crisis.

“Your home isn’t just your greatest source of wealth – it’s your greatest source of security. It’s what anchors you to your neighborhood and community. It’s the center of your family.

“Over the past week, we’ve seen unprecedented action to maintain confidence in our credit markets and head off a crisis for Wall Street Banks. It’s now time for equally aggressive action to help families avoid foreclosure and keep communities across this country from spiraling into recession.

“Today, I am announcing my four part plan to Protect American Homeowners: A plan to help our families keep their homes and help communities hard hit by the housing crisis get back on their feet.

“The time for action is now -- not a month from now, or a year from now -- but right now. And the reality is that many of our families need more than just basic refinancing. That’s why I support new legislation proposed by my colleagues, Representative Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodd, that would expand the government’s capacity to stand behind mortgages that are reworked on affordable terms…

“...The Frank-Dodd legislation would…[set] up an auction system for mortgage companies that hold hundreds of thousands of these mortgages. Through this system, these companies could sell mortgages in bulk to banks and other buyers. The buyers would be willing to purchase these mortgages – and restructure them to make them affordable for families – because they know the government will guarantee them once they’re reworked…

“…But given the severity of today’s housing crisis, simply facilitating this auction process might not be enough to get our economy moving again. That’s why I believe the Federal Housing Administration should also stand ready to be a temporary buyer -- to purchase, restructure, and resell underwater mortgages.

“Just as it has in the past, this kind of temporary measure by the government could give our economy the boost it needs and families the help they need. It would not require a single new government bureaucracy, and would be designed to be self-financing over time -- so it would cost taxpayers nothing in the long run. It is a sensible way for everyone -- lenders, investors, mortgage companies and borrowers -- to share responsibility, keep families in their homes, and stabilize our communities and our economy.

“In order to determine whether the approach outlined by Representative Frank and Senator Dodd is sufficient -- or whether we need government to step in as a purchaser -- I am calling on President Bush to appoint an emergency working group on foreclosures. That is the second part of my plan.

“We simply cannot wait until Congress passes legislation to find the best way to help millions of families restructure their mortgages on affordable terms. That’s why I’m proposing an Emergency Working Group on Foreclosures that could be led by a distinguished, non-partisan group of economic leaders like Alan Greenspan, Paul Volcker and Robert Rubin. This is the kind of proactive step that would help re-establish confidence in our economy by showing that this Administration was taking our economic crisis seriously.

“Just over a month ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a $168 billion stimulus package. But this package did next to nothing to help homeowners and communities struggling with foreclosure. Congress is trying to combat a recession caused by the housing crisis without doing anything to address that crisis.

“Well, if the Fed can extend $30 billion to help Bear Stearns address their financial crisis, the federal government should provide at least that much emergency assistance to help families and communities address theirs.”

Re: Senator Clinton’s NCAA Bracket Picks

Senator Clinton has asked me to announce that while she has already picked the NCAA tournament winner, she will not be able to release her bracket picks until sometime “on or around” April 15.

As you know, she has been working VERY HARD on behalf of the American people.  She sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night just to put in more time for the struggling members of the middle class in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky (the rest of the states can go to hell—yes I said it).  So, you’ll all appreciate that she will not have time to release her picks until the middle of April.

We will not be taking any questions on this topic.  However, if you insist, our answer will be to trash our opponent’s bracket.  Oh wait, he picked North Carolina.  Well, that reminds me.  We also love the struggling men and women in the great Tarheel state.

Senator Clinton, understands the economy and what needs to be done to fix it. McCain and Obama, haven't a clue, or just steal Clinton's ideas.
Obama received MORE votes in those "major" states than ANY Democratic candidate in history.  Yes, HIllary received a few more.  But to suggest that somehow Obama would not win in those "major" states in the fall is ludicrous.
Of course, what part of Dyngus Day will Bill Clinton take part in?

depends on what woman Bill tries to hit on today....
Bill will say something to get Hillary mad and she will have a bucket dumped on her to calm her down.

This is the only metric the Clinton campaign has come up with yet has her ahead: she's behind in popular vote, behind in delegates earned JUST through primaries and behind in pledged delegates.

This is just like Bush/Gore in 2000
Gore had the most popular votes....
Bush had the most delegates........

Are you libs going to be crying foul if Hillary wins the nomiation if she gets the most delegates????

two-thirds of the cash-on-hand total reported by Clinton is untouchable because it's general election money. This may explain why Clinton isn't yet on the air with any TV ads.

They also need the money for that big pizza layout and rooms at the Hilton....

“Just over a month ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a $168 billion stimulus package. But this package did next to nothing to help homeowners and communities struggling with foreclosure. Congress is trying to combat a recession caused by the housing crisis without doing anything to address that crisis.

And remember folks...
This is e Democrat controlled congress she is talking about.....

So much for her ability to manage the country's economy....she can't even manage her campaign's finances.  They are once again broke.  Or as the numbers bear out she was even more in debt before than they acknowledged.
Wow, Hillary Clinton really is the new Bush-Cheney...

She has more "electorial college" votes than Obama has?  Really? Even though he's winning in the popular vote she still thinks she is the true rightful heir to the Presidency?  What's next more WMDs?
PA, IN, NC, WV, KY, OR, Idaha, Montana,  SD, Guam &
PR are going to save us all from Obama.  VOTE HILLARY.
Somebody please alert the Clinton Camp that the 86 Electoral Votes from California and New York will go to Obama in the General no matter what their spin says.
Hillary is our only realistic hope for the dems to win in November. Many, Hillary fans will not vote or will be voting for McCain and refuse to vote for Obama because he is becoming more and more UNelectable. The superdelegates need to look real close to see what is happening to our party. Obama is losing many white and Jewish voters after the Pastor fallout. Hillary must be our nominee or we will not win.
I am SO confused and this has been bothering me for quite some time...

How is it plausible to argue that the superdelegates (party activists, elected officials--i.e., the party's elite membership) can overturn the democratic primary and caucus results, while simultaneously arguing that the caucuses are undemocratic because only the "party activists" attend?

How is it fair to recognize (and beg for support) one group of activists, but utterly discount the other group?

The hypocrisy and illogic is astounding.

Go Obama; hopefully this will all be over soon.
Come next January, while the rest of us are watching President Obama being sworn in, Hillary, Mark Penn and Harold Ickes will still be sitting around trying to concoct a way to steal this election.

Why can't Team Hillary see the reality that the rest of America sees? That Barack Obama has played by the Democratic Party nominating rules (which Hillary never objected to prior to entering this race) and now, by every measure, she is losing and has lost.

It's over Hillary! Give it up!
Our morning annoucement said, "Former President Wlliam J. Clinton will be speaking at our High School this evening."  How upsetting, I thought.  But now, I assume the Clintons view Indiana as a BIG state, and they are looking for us to pull through for them.  Well, Im assuming they haven't gotten the memo: Indiana is the state I love, and we don't want any of the divisive politics the Clintons are spitting.

I don't believe Obama to be the Messiah, but I know he will rise again.

Obama '08-from the heart of Indiana.

We dont get you Billary.  You are not of, from, for, in bed with, or anything involving the middle class.  WE DONT WANT TO ELECT YOU!  I wish she would get that through her head.  The fact that she hasn't won a state convincingly since super Tuesday lets her know that the American people are having second guesses about the "Conventional Candidate." If she didn't share the last name with the president who receives all the glory for the booming 90's economy, even though the Internet attributed much to that, she wouldn't even be in this race.  Winning 60% of a state doesn't mean you'll win that State in the GE. Especially when you have a 40plus negative.  That means the other folks who didn't vote for the Brand Name candidate definitely wont vote for you in the GE.  Please from the Heart of Indiana, stop attempting to SPIN us. Honestly, I doubt she'll reach 45% in the GE if she was the Nominee.

Grace and Peace
I can appreciate that Clinton is talking about economic specifics and I hope that Obama follows with more of the same.  These issues are important.  Although I am not supporting Clinton (and probably will not vote for her or McCain should she become the nominee), I look forward to supporting other Democratic candidates throughout the  other races and hopefully they will support economic policies that help shore up the middle class in this country.

As some know, I cannot support Clinton this race because I refuse to support her tactics (its just where I respectfully draw the line).  This trend toward electoral math is just more of the same.  Those weren't the rules, if they were the rules you probably would have seen some differences in how the candidates campaigned.  And as was pointed out in the blog entry...electoral math now does not predict electoral math in the general.  It is more gamesmanship and seeking rule changes in the middle of the game and it does not flatter Clinton.  It shows her desparate.

I have never called for her to back out, I have only asked that she (and Barack) seek to stay on issues and run clean campaigns.  She refuses to do that, she is ripping the party to shreds.  It may well be McCain in the Fall(which is unfortunate) but hopefully, at least, with a Democratic Congress.  I continue to hope that Obama is the candidate and we can unite around him (although its looking like Clinton will not let that happen).

Obama for President 08
Why oh why didn't you run Former VA Gov. Mark Warner...you could've saved us democrats from ourselves!
Memo to 'Dee In Tennessee': You can take North Carolina off your list of states that are going to Hillary.

North Carolina is Obama Country darlin'!
Clinton's "new" talking point about electoral votes suffers from the same logical flaw as her old talking point about "winning the big states" - there is no reason to believe that Clinton will win the states or that Obama will lose the states that represent these electoral votes.

The Clinton campaign is attempting to confuse the issue. The issue in a Primary election is the DELEGATES - NOT electoral votes, NOT big states, NOT even popular vote (which was a much better argument, but is now out of reach)

PEOPLE - SHE CAN NOT WIN THE NOMINATION.

If her last name were ANYTHING BUT Clinton, she would have been written off a month ago. But the News refuses to report the NEWS - that Hillary is virtually out of it - were Obama in this position, EVERYONE would be clamoring for him to get out.

...and by the way - part of Clinton's cash problem is that she has $3 million on hand and Obama has $30 million on hand.

What does THAT tell you about who is better suited to repair the economy? She can't even run her own campaign in a fiscally responsable manner.
Obama already signed onto teh Dod legislation last week.  This is not her plan, its Dodd's plan.
"working to prevent crises, rather than just reacting to them once it’s too late"

Kinda like Hillary's campaign? Look, if she can't even handle her own campaign correctly, how are we supposed to believe that 8 years as the President's wife is supposed to make her qualified to run the country's economy? She's ridiculous.
So in other words Hilary is saying that we're all equal, but some of us are more equal than others.  Or rather those states that are for her are more equal.
Once again First Read's BIASED reporting of this primary cycle lacks any journalistic credibility and stinks to high hell of cheerleading for Barrack Obama.
Not only are Rendell and Bayh correct about the fact that Hillary has won states with more electoral votes; but, (and I don't know why the great and glorious First Read hasn't pointed this out) Obama has only won two (2) states that were "blue" in the last election.
The Democratic Candidate must change the electoral map this November if he/she expects to win the Presidency, it's obvious Obama can't do that.
Please start telling the truth First Read, you are embarrassing yourselves.
...and how about some honest, forthright coverage of the Rezko trial, and Obama's contradictions of his involvement with Rezko over the years...starting with his famous quote "he never asked me to do any political favors for him."
I guess Obama doesn't consider sending letters to City and State officials, asking them for 14 million dollars worth of funding for Rezko's housing projects in Chicago was a "political favor." And ah, what's this about an Iraqi financeer loaning the Rezko's 3.5 million dollars, for their part in the Kentwood land deal?
It would be nice if First Read would do some coverage on that.
who won the primary in each state has nothing to do with who can win the general election in those same states
"Dyngus Day is a day where guys get to drench gals in water;"

Coming soon to DVD, "Ex-President's Gone Wild"!
"We need a President who is ready on day one to be Commander-in-Chief of our economy."

Senator Clinton, you've already demonstrated your inability to manage your own campaign's finances.  Why should we give you the opportunity to mismanage this nation's economy?
Wow, Hillary Clinton really is the new Bush-Cheney...

She has more "electorial college" votes than Obama has?  Really?

Ya really, what about the electorial college do you not get. Do you want to win the presidency or do you want to make a social statement?
I thought this was a democratic primary and not a GE.Its delegates that counts and not electorate votes that count. Guess we have to try every thing in the book to win. Thats how you can prove that you are vetted, tested and ready to lead on day one.
Specious argument by Rendell, et al. And, as pointed out by Chuck, doesn't always carry through in the general.
Clinton and Obama are only running against each other-there is no 'other side'! And there is that Repub. dabbling in other people's primaries?
Are you kidding me?!?  This is the same person that threw a fit when Gore lost the White House in 2000 because Bush and Cheney cheated their way in.  Now I guess she decided to use a few rules out of their playbook, or she just outright hired Karl Rove, and is going to do the same thing to Obama.  This is just getting ridiculous. Really.
 Dyngus Day?
The Indiana version of a wet t-shirt event?
No wonder they sent Chelsea with him.
And with the number of plates (and lamps) Hillary has probably hurled at him, this must be punishment for SC, etc., etc.
HRC's bloated Campaign Mgr. PENN isn't making enough money to keep her campaign solvent he has taken to making comments on this blog.  BILLARY is still BEHIND in total delegates and the popular vote. She still won't have enough to gain more delegates if she 'wins' PA (what a prize). MSNBC a continual Clinton SUPER surrogate, is still trying to aide her in stealing the election.
I haven't seen this much political spin since the impeachment charges against President Bill Clinton. Now the Hillary camp is claiming electoral college victories in a Democratic primary season. Give me a break! This is the problem with the Democratic Party, both Bill and Hillary think that they are the party.  The Clintons are attempting to trump Howard Dean as head of the DNC.  The superdelegates should hold their own primary after June 7th to rally behind Obama to send a clear message that he is the nominee.
The only way for Hillary Clinton to win the nomination is through spin. Her campaign has twisted and turned its words in defining victory. It reminds me of how Bush and Cheney have spun the Iraq war to us. Hillary can not legitimately win the nomination. Her presence in this race demonstrates her desire to put John McCain in office.
How much do the staff at MSNBZZZZZZZZZ hate Bill and Hilliary and their daughter, the mind numbing blabber all day and the suspension of SHuster the constant apologies by mathews Mica cheerleading its just such poor journalism,I work at a warehouse what is all of yours excuse.
Jerry how are you and rev wright going to get along on the obamma bus
Senator Clinton, understands the economy and what needs to be done to fix it. McCain and Obama, haven't a clue, or just steal Clinton's ideas.
" Millions" of Democrats who will not vote for Obama (Sent Monday, March 24, 2008 9:49 AM)

Amazing how naive some of you people are.  She doesn't have a clue.  Open your mind and look at what she says.  She talks in extremely vague terms.  Say's she'll "form a commitee", "have her advisors make up a plan" or... use Representative Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodd's plan.   Just amazes me how you people buy into her spin.  She doesn't have a plan.  She constantly talks up OTHER people's plan and make it seem like it's her own.  The Fed's move last week, Representative Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodd's plan, etc.

Here she goes again .... getting ready to "spew" promises that will indeed be beyond her control....but....when you are in the river drowning any life preserver looks good. She is playing to people's desperation. She is not talking about an opportunity of hope based on general unified efforts. Her mantra is always about the programs she will put together to bail out that person that she so desperately wants that vote from. She's like the kid who promises her only "lollipop" to five other kids. Whatever does not help Hillary doesn't count as being significant. All of those voters in the lost states are insignificant. Bill Richardson, today, is insignificant. Insignificant only becomes significant when it falls on Hillary side of the fence. Come on, does that make sense? Yes, Hillary Clinton is indeed transparent. Her intergrity fails the litmus test for being the President.

Democratic nomination was Hillary's to lose and she is losing it. How can anyone argue that she is more electable in Nov when she screwed up the primaries. It takes strategy and smarts to win elections... different strategies for primaries and general elections. Hillary has failed in the first test, and is now asking us to trust us with a bigger test in November. Obama is a once in a life time candidate who is winning against odds. And those of you who are calling him racist, you really belong in the other party, please vote for McCain whoever the democratic nominee is. I and an Obama supporter but will vote for Clinton, if she is our nominee.
How many more Laugh lines can the clinton campaign come up with for the MSM to fawn over.Insted of their talking point's, why Not call Her out on her Outright Lies to the American public? Is the MSM scared of being Shustered for asking the Factual question's? After demeaning every state that she did'nt Win, she actually think's she could Possibly carry them in the fall.Get Real Indeed, Hillary!

All you Hillary supporter's are delusional, thinking that America has Forgotten about Impeachment & the Loss od Congress under the Clinton's.The Only thing she had going for her to begin with was the Few admirer's of Bill left over.

I've come to the conclusion, you Hillary supporter's just love being Lied to, because their's No other Reasonable explanation other than, I have a vagina, Vote for Me!
Electoral Votes? And the goal posts have been moved again.
Truly the dumbest argument the Clintons have advanced yet.  Are they trying to say that Obama won't carry CA or NY in a general election? That's just utter nonsense. The lies these people tell are just stunning - what's worse, her supporters (and some media outlets) buy into this crap. Talk about drinking KoolAid!
Don't believe all of the antiHillary crap that the proObama media are cramming down our throats. Obama has one goal, and thats to become the first black president. If elected he will be lost and powerless

" Millions" of Democrats who will not vote for Obama (Sent Monday, March 24, 2008 9:49 AM)

She has no clue.  She never did.  All she does is use spin to make you think she does, but she really has no clue and no plans.   Look at her own words:

In unveiling her “Day One” economic agenda, Hillary Clinton on Monday called on President Bush to appoint such people as former Federal Reserve chairmen Alan Greenspan and Paul Volcker and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to an “emergency working group” to try to solve the nation’s housing crisis. The proposed panel would recommend legislation and other steps to “help re-establish confidence in our economy,” Clinton said in prepared remarks for her speech in Philadelphia.

_____

So... she wants a "group" formed to try and figure out what to do.   And she wants to talk up the Frank-Dodd legislation as if some how that makes her have an idea.

She has NOTHING.  Anyone could have a bunch of smart and experienced people form a group to come up with ideas.  That doesn't make them worthy to be president or have a clue what they are doing.

Its another ridiculous argument from what has become a ridiculous campaign. Does anyone really think Obama won't carry New York in the general? To suggest that electoral college votes mean anything in a nomination race is really reaching.
News Flash from Mark Penn:

Hillary just won the 2004 General Election!!! She has more electoral votes than either Bush or Gore.

And you thought she didn't have any experience. Here is four years of "should have been president".

By the way, does anyone think that there is a possibility that some of Penn's big clients are also major contributors to both McCain and Clinton? Charlie Black is working the McCain side and Penn the Clinton side. This way, they can buy the presidency no matter who wins. Oops, they have to get Obama out of the way.

I also have a plan to fix the economy. I think we should support the Frank-Dodd legislation. I guess that makes me just as qualified as Hillary. We both have the same plan.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Blah, blah, blah! Give the whining baby boomers everything. Take the jobs from the working poor, tax them with mandatory health insurance and an inflationary  monetary policy and tell them to go to night school after they bring themselves home from working two minimum wage jobs. We know the speech already, 'Take away their straw and tell the slaves to make more bricks'.
She just can't give Obama any credit for anything.  The 'Frank/Dodd' bill she signed on to was co-written and co-sponsored in the Senate by Senator Chris Dodd AND SENATOR BARACK OBAMA.  It is more properly called the Dodd/Obama bill.  Once again, Barack acts while Hillary just talks and tries to 'ride Obama's coat tails'.
The Clintonistas keep coming up with new yardsticks to measure by after the old ones keep showing her behind.  First it was "Oh but we have more delegates..."  then Obama ended up with more delegates... Next it was "oh but we have more delegates won in primaries... because you know those caucus delegates may count the same but they're really not as important..." then Obama ended up with more "primary delegates"...

Her latest made up yardstick is the "More Electoral College votes..."  as if California wasn't going to vote for Obama and Texas was going to vote for Clinton...  Someone from the FDA needs to check their Kool-aid...
"Don't believe all of the antiHillary crap that the proObama media are cramming down our throats. Obama has one goal, and thats to become the first black president. If elected he will be lost and powerless"
------Brother ODD

"The sense urgency of NOW" ring a bell?  How ignorant are people who post on this blog.  How about we just say Obama is trying to become the first president born in hawaii to a black man and a white woman.  Or how about he's trying to become the first president with the last name that begins with "O."  How ridiculous can you be?  I genuinely believe Barack is for the American people, obviously you are not. Its time to turn the page.
