SEIU to focus on Obama ground game

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- SEIU leaders said they are planning on focusing on “member-to-member” contacts throughout Pennsylvania, choosing not to air advertisements for Obama at this time.

“We think in Pennsylvania, the more workers can talk to workers, the more influential we can be,” said Anna Burger, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer, in a conference call with reporters Monday.

There are more than 75,000 SEIU members in the Keystone State, and the union is setting up eight sites across Pennsylvania. The focus has been on registration through Monday, the deadline for residents to register to vote or change their party affiliation. The next step will be educating members.

While SEIU aired ads for Obama, shortly after announcing their national endorsement, before the Ohio primary, they are not planning to go on television or radio in Pennsylvania at this time. “But that could change,” Burger said.

“We think the candidates are spending so much on the air, it's more important for us to be on the door and on the ground,” she said.

After a compressed primary schedule earlier this year, union officials said the extra time has allowed them to ensure their membership rolls are up to date and to better organize themselves in the field, which lessened the need for media buys. Burger said members have been spontaneously reaching out to union officials, interested in the race and getting involved.

When asked if Obama could win the union vote in Pennsylvania, with polls showing Clinton at a 15-point advantage, Burger said she thought “we can narrow the gap.”

Could Hillary Clinton have beeen at home this past weekend thinking about her chances, hearing from "party elders" and worrying about her image and future standing in the party? As entitled as she feels, as unwilling as she is to ever stop fighting, she is not stupid. It's hard to imagine her ever seeing a path to a nomination that would be anything beyond an awfully pyric victory. Imagine her standing with the party, the electorate and the press if she were to step out of the race for her party and "the country's sake" to do her all to get a Democrat in the White House. Imagine the unity she could engender with a positive, supportive and rousing speech (with Obama at her side?). This would be the time for such an action... before PA. If she wins PA in a big way Obama supporters will claim backlash from Rev. Wright & that this could last thru No. Carolina & Indiana, but that he'll have plenty of time to recover before November. She cannot pass him in delegate count, and I bet she's exhausted. A move like this would cement her leadership role in the party, at the convention and in the Democratic controlled Senate. Also, if Obama should lose she will be the #1 Dem going forward for four years. Musings from a political junkie...feel free to post on politico.com as your own.
Even if Obama gets the nomination, I will not vote for him. He does not deserve my vote.
The SEIU knows it would be throwing good money after bad to buy ads in PA
We are a racist society. When Obama first announced his candidacy for president of the United States the first question that the media asked,  "Is America Ready" for a Black president? That first question in itself  proved we are in fact a racist country. I admit I'm tired of talking, reading and listening regarding the topic of race in this presidential election.  I'd much rather read and talk about the economy, health care and the war.  Yet, I can't help wonder what if Obama had the same heritage he has of a White mother and a Black father, but had white skin. Would we still be having this conversation?  What if Obama in his lifetime had been able to walk down any ordinary  street  in America and all who passed by simply saw a cute looking White kid or a nice looking White man, would his perception of racism in this country be different and would his race be as significant as it is in this election? I think not. The racism that we all share would have been tempered simply because his skin color happened to be white. Shame on us and our country that we love. That the first thing and sadly sometimes the only thing we notice in a person is the color of their skin or the shape of their eyes. Perception is after all everything.

The name of book is "Dreams of Father"

Max read Chapter 9. In it speaks then of his disapproval of things Rev Wright says. This was long before his pastor's sermon was/is rentlessly played everyday, all day.

If you live in PA, educate your self about her NAFTA stance.

Can't people see just like some in Ohio saw after they learned the truth about NAFTA? Some of the wish they not voted for her NOW.

Don't trust her, she is polarizing, a race baiter, a unconcerned liar; but most of all she is a nightmare that won't go away.
Gary, it's becoming increasingly clear that Hillary has her sights set on destroying the Democratic party. She's so intoxicated with a sense of entitlement to the presidency, that she would rather punish our country with another Republican president than help the Democrats take back the White House. She and Bill have done much damage to the party and to their legacies.
I would have voted for Obama if Sen Clinton had not made it to the Dem convention but then I worked at the Primary and caucus in Tx and this changed my mind. Now I would never vote for BObama. The way the Obama supporters handled business was underhanded, pushy and unethical. There was no need for all this negative stuff-they had so many voters coming out for them, there was no need at all. The Obama people told lies, locked clinton people out of their caucus, people from other states showed up and tried to take over the sign-up tables, they used so many dirty tricks it was pathetic. If this is the way his foot soldiers are with the opposition I wouldnt want to see him in as the Dem nominee and certainly not as President.
Gary, in my opinion, you are being much too kind to Clinton.  Yes, she has come to the realization (about 3 to 4 weeks ago) that 2008 will not be a Clinton year, but her plan now is - Plan B - 2012.  Plan B is all about assuring that Obama is NOT elected in 2008 or the Plan becomes a mute point.  This is why the Hill and Bill Show is painting McCain as electable and Obama not.  They need McCain in 08 to have the Plan succeed.  Clinton will go back to the Senate and make McCain's life living hell so he fails....then the Plan is she steps forth, looks the cameras straight on, and says, "see I told you ;-)"...and waltzes back to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.  We all seems to forget when you are talking about the Clintons - it's all about Hillary, party be damned, country be damned....it's MY TIME!
Okay Gary, STOP THE MADNESS! Hillary might win PA and that's it! We should agree that when Barack wins NC & IN, she should drop out, right? Please advise Hillary so we can get on with it.
Watch for how many new Democrats register in Pennsylvania this round. It turned out 100,000 republicans voted Democratic in Texas, and that's how much she won by. With McCain already in place, will the GOP take this opportunity to choose their opponent?

Lets face facts here. This "rookie" Obama has out-campaigned the vaunted "Clinton Machine". They've done it with an interesting mix of old and new.
The "ground game" being part of the old but still vitally necessary means of campaigning.
Hats Off to Obama again.
There you have it Pennsylvania. These are the folks that have our blue-collar best interest at heart.     They have, after applying obvious logic, chosen Senator Obama as the best choice to bring about change for us. Senator Clinton stood by, and cheesed for the cameras, while her husband sent our jobs packing with NAFTA. Do you get that? Wake up. Cast a vote for yourselves, and your families.
Pulling for Obama '08
Sorry, but if I read Obama right and even if it were for the sake of party untiy Obama has too much integrity to be associated with Hillary.  Wright might have said a lot of nasty things but the Clintons have done the nasty things. Don't disappoint me Obama!
Obama campaign has been living in the gutter since day one!

This would be a day long event on MSNBC if this had been done to Obama by the Clinton campaign.
Wow, well I certainly appreciate their help on the ground.  That is fantastic.  I think members talking to people face-to-face will really make a big difference.

Its funny, my husband's part-time job is in EMS and he is an SEIU member.  However, he is Republican and he did not check off the spot on the application that says his dues can be used for politicking LOL.  But he is very anti-Hillary so in some ways, he's with you guys in spirit at least in the Dem. primary!

Its nice these people are pounding pavement and its not just a hollow endorsement.

Obama 08
Gary -- if only your vision of how Senator Clinton spent her weekend were real. I think she spent the weekend planning her strategy further, phoning Superdelegates, and being angry at Gov. Richardson. I think she is so caught up in the fight that she doesn't see the bigger picture. If she negotiates correctly now, she could perhaps influence the selection of the VP (as Reagan influenced Ford's selection of Dole) and perhaps privately "make a deal" for Pres. Clinton to be appointed to the Supreme Court, and as you expressed, make herself the "only choice" in 2012 if Obama loses to McCain.
Narrowing "the gap" in the state I was born in would be thrilling.  Like I said....we all need to tone down the religion thing and start looking at who is best suited to lead.
Hillary Clinton will drag this country down to its lowest level...and won’t even bat an eye...she does not care about party, country, people. She owes a lot to others...she needs to get into the White House in order to make pay offs...This will be a sad day for Americans....

20 Years of the Bushes and Clintons experience got this country where it is today. Barack can bring people together and take this country to a higher level. I will stand by him all the way to the White House. He will lead us to greatness...He's got this!

I believe that you reap what you sow. The conditions of the United States today also reflects this. The shape that this country is in today is a result of the seeds that the Bushes and Clintons have planted for the last almost 20 years.

When Bush leaves office...the United States would have been under the rule of the Bushes and Clintons for 20 years....They trashed this country...they are bullies and liars. Some of our citizens have lost big time (jobs, property and lives) based on the decisions made by the Bushes and Clintons. These people have taken us from SCANDAL to WARS to SHAME.

Hey, Gary in Pitt, maybe Obama's in the Caribbean thinking about how he can bow out gracefully since he is now UNELECTABLE. Choosing to stand by Wright, the Christian right will turn out in droves.  And, frankly, there will be a large percentage of Democrats voting for McCain. Many simply can't vote for Obama because he cannot be trusted. He associates with Wright, Rezko and Wm Ayers. One's a crook and the other two are anti-American.
I am sick and tired of Obama supporters saying that Hillary should get out of the race.  For once the primary process is working the way it should.  Four crummy and inconsequential states didn't determine the Democratic nominee.

Imagine if John Kerry would've been attacked prior to his nomination.  Two things would've happened.  (1) He would've countered the arguments and been stronger in the general election against Bush or (2) He would have faltered and Democrats would've picked a stronger candidate.  Either way, a prolonged process would have benefitted the Democratics because Kerry would've learned how to effectively hit back or Democrats would have nominated someone that would.  Both scenarios would have given Democrats the Presidentcy.

Obama built his lead in the month of February because all the states that had competitions favored him and his followers refused (and still do) to look at anything other than his mystique.  Now that Hillary has a chance to return the favor, his supporters are calling for her to quit.  This is absurd.

Despite what people say, the race is not about who has "the most" delegates or even the largest popular vote, it's about who the party thinks is the strongest candidate.  The delegate count is a shortcut.  If you get enough delegates, then no matter what others think, you win.  If you don't hit that mark, and Obama won't (nor will Hillary) then the party picks the strongest candidate.

They should both move and contintue to present their respective cases as to who is the stronger candidate.  If Obama (and his supporters) don't have the stomach to fight on, I personally fail to see what makes him the stronger candidate.
Funny...this union's management support BO...but the membership is firmly in Hillary's camp.  Talk about politics.  Just like the Casino workers in Navada.  If a union doesn't even represent their membership, what is the point of that union and doesn't it render any endorsement worthless?
Gary-PITT. What total crap. This "entitlement" nonsense is pure conservative spin, spread by the media, and I am and suspicious of anyone claiming to be a democrat who parrots right wing talking points. Her standing in the press is irrelevant, they hate her now,and they will hate her no matter what she does or says. She has an obligation to all of those who voted for her to try to win,  and if in the end she loses, then to wholeheartdly support Obama as the nominee of the party.
But why would you want someone who only cares about her image or has a sense of entitlement as you claim, as the democratic presidential candidate in 2012?
She should hire Rev. Wright. Evidently he can say or write anything and get away with it. Or maybe Richard Cone.
After weeks of arduous negotiations, on April 6, 2006, a bipartisan group of senators burst out of the "President's Room," just off the Senate chamber, with a deal on new immigration policy.

As the half-dozen senators -- including John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) -- headed to announce their plan, they met Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who made a request common when Capitol Hill news conferences are in the offing: "Hey, guys, can I come along?" And when Obama went before the microphones, he was generous with his list of senators to congratulate -- a list that included himself.

"I want to cite Lindsey Graham, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, myself, Dick Durbin, Joe Lieberman . . . who've actually had to wake up early to try to hammer this stuff out," he said.

To Senate staff members, who had been arriving for 7 a.m. negotiating sessions for weeks, it was a galling moment. Those morning sessions had attracted just three to four senators a side, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) recalled, each deeply involved in the issue. Obama was not one of them.
***************************
Obama really stinks.
BO is is not the WRIGHT person nor is is to be trusted.
We need a REAL AMERICAN to lead us.
I wish I could go to Pennsylvania to help Senator Obama there.  Clearly Clinton has a strong advantage and more 'connections' there.  I don't trust Hillary.  I hope these 'primaries' are on the up and up.  I am very encouraged to know that so many americans agree with me that Senator Obama is our best candidate and will beat McCain in the fall.
OBAMA '08
Why are the unions promoting Obama when the union workers support Hillary? What's wrong with that picture? Just like big government, big unions loose sight of who they represent.
"Imagine her standing with the party, the electorate and the press if she were to step out of the race for her party and "the country's sake" to do her all to get a Democrat in the White House. Imagine the unity she could engender with a positive, supportive and rousing speech (with Obama at her side?). This would be the time for such an action... before PA."

Gary, I have to agree with you 100%.  As corrupt as Clinton is, I would have a newfound respect for her if she were to do this, and I would probably be able to get on board with the so-called "dream team" (Obama-Clinton)ticket. But, we know her ego would never let her do it.
Hillary is hell bent on winning the nomination.  She is putting her own ambitions over that of the people.  If she is "for the people" and cares about the Democratic party at all she should step aside.  To expect the superdelegates to over turn the will of the people illustrates that she only cares about what she wants.  Typical rich white eliteism, she thinks she is entitled.  Same thing this administration has been doing.  She is no better than Bush.
As an Obama supporter, I would want him to win Pennslyvania, but having lived there for about 4 years I don't think he'll win over Hillary, especially with the Democratic establishment support of Hillary from people like the Governor, the Philadelphia mayor and the Pittsburgh mayor.  But if SEIU can help Obama lose by less than 10 points, and the Pennslyvania democratic primary has a record turnout, I would count this as a draw for Obama.
I would think that since PA isn't a winner take all contest, then Obama doesn't have to win, but just close the gap to about 5% or so.  He'll still have a large number of delegates and not have to worry too much about the number of votes cast.  He'll still have the lead in all thing but superdelegates.
Hey Gary:

Nice blog SPAM.

The SEIU is not going to be able to convince its members to vote against their own economic interests.  There is a reason why blue collar workers have been voting for Hillary.  She understands their interests.  Most Obama supporters pay 5$ for a cup of coffee.  That is not going to fly with SEIU workers.
I think 'now' would be an excellent time for Hillary to remove herself from the presidential race.  I have a feeling that it may have come up during her weekend retreat.
A Pennsylvania vote for Hillary is a vote for someone that already LOST. Okay, so she has continued to lie, and that carries her forward, like the lying pal, Wolfson. What clowns.
I think the SEIU strategy is a good one. I don't think the Obama camp is expecting to win PA. All they need to do is win as many delegate rich regions of the state as possible and narrow Clinton's gap significantly, which I think is very possible. I am a proud Obama supporter (an "Obamacan" - Republican turned Independent) and I hope that Obama can pull out an upset in the Keystone state. The thought of another Clinton administration is simply not appealing to me. I don't think it should be appealing to any rational-minded person. If Clinton is the Democratic choice for President, then I will have to seriously reconsider my intention to vote Democrat in this election. Even though I disagree with most of McCain's politics, I still like and trust him more than Hillary Clinton...to be very honest.
Big unions are supporting Obama because the union members supported Obama.  Obama has yet to voice his leadership skills with in Penn, and Hillary has the name recognition of her husband.  Obama will close the gap in Penn
I wouldn't be too sure that SEIU's membership supports Clinton.  As for Nevada, the story was that the membership was split.  Anyway, we'll see.  Members can think for themselves.
Barack Obama has served three years in the U.S. Senate - hardly sufficient experience for the problems this country faces.  Barack Obama has traveled to Kenya and Indonesia, and now the Virgin Islands - hardly the global perspective and experience needed for the global economy.  Barack Obama is not a product of U.S. slums or black urban plight.  He is the son of a Harvard graduate.  He joined Reverand Wright's church to become "black" enough to win in Chicago - Barack is an opportunist, not a qualified candidate.  Hillary Clinton did not stay home Sunday to watch the news networks spin the election.  Let the voters and superdelegates decide who should win the nomination.  This is all tied up It is a myth that Hillary Clinton is not solidly in this race - and, that is a very good thing for this country and the Democratic Party.
The Clintons are and have always been devious, especially when it seems that things are against them. It has been proven that whatever it takes, lying as well as cheating, is not new to them when they feel the need to win,and they want this one bad, they want back in the white house, which I think would be a catastrophe. My question is why noone has called attention to all this especially when all these papers came out. 35 years of WHAT? Who could trust such a person to be president? I sure wouldn't and certainly hope I don't have to.

There's no doubt McCain would be doing to Obama what Clinton is doing; but at least he'd pay a price for it. Hillary's doing all the dirty work at no cost. After Wisconsin it was clear that a scorched earth policy was her remote and only chance. If the Dems snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in November, Bill and Hillary will be getting Christmas cards from Republicans throughout America. When McCarthy and Judas are brought out in the same week, who's left to call upon but Satan himself? I guess it's early. After all, we're still in March. For the last 6 years we've seen one politician sacrifice his country's well being for personal political glory. Now we're seeing another politician tearing her party apart for the same selfish reason. Should we take solace in the fact that political greed is bipartisan?
I have been a democrat all my life. I canvassed for George McGovern. But I will vote for John McCain before I vote for Barack Obama. I don't want another "learn on the job" president whose primary appeal is the fact he's new, nice looking, and gives a good speech.
I am a member of SEIU and think this is an awesome strategy since hillary believes in "creeping" into your house by TV ads. You need to have real people to talk to about doubts and fears imposed on the people through media manipulation. Go SEIU !!!
Talking about uninformed, people the first rule of thought is may sure your research is done, that way you are blameless, rev, wright message is harsh, but it was not meant for babes, the message was for christian who knows the word and has done the studies of the history of civilizating.ameriva is not the first power, study your bible and listen to the entire message.america need to hear the consequencies of pride, even when we are in error we still act of if it is ok.study your bible, hannity is not a true conservative christian, they have tried to highjack the movement with their hipocritical veiws they do not love this country are it people take heed the messenger and change your wicked ways.
I really don't think these boards are changing anyone's minds, but I think it's important to get all views out. Unfortunately, the views have becoming increasingly aggressive and nasty, and that doesn't bode well for the Dems as this election has been a "sure" thing.

I think both candidates have considerable baggage that although different, is equal. Clinton gets hammered for being evil, lying, underhanded, "win at all costs", dragging the party down, etc. and I think that while some of this is unwarranted, it nevertheless "sticks". Her negatives are a "given" and pretty well known by both Dems and Republicans alike.

Obama has shown he can no longer run a different / "positive" campaign and tries to blame everything on Clinton rather than taking ownership of his staff who represents him. It appears he has no better judgement than Clinton, and with his lack of experience, endorsements by all the liberal media (MoveOn.org, Kennedy, Oprah and Hollywood), Michelle's patriotism comments, and perceived reverse racism from the Wright ordeal he has now lost trust in the eyes of many Americans and is being viewed as just another sleazy politician. This now makes him an equally problematic candidate.

One can envision the TV ads the Republicans will make for either of these candidates and they won't be pretty!! Ironically they aren't that far apart on the issues, and Obama patterned his indoctrination into the Senate on Clinton's model (which at that time he admired!) I think it's disappointing that this election is no longer a "gimme" and that we're now so disillusioned by candidates who we hoped would inspire, lead, and bring out the best in us. I also think it's regrettable that as Dems we trash our last Democratic president who at least was nominated twice. In spite of his many many faults, my family did enjoy economic prosperity and freedom during Clinton's 8 years, and felt that as lower-middle class, we were finally being "seen and heard" for the first time. That's significantly better than what most of us are experiencing now, and we should not forget that!!

We need to get back to some kind of unity without burning all the bridges up to the election. It will require ALL Clinton and Obama supporters to join hands and beat McCain!!
There is nothing in Obama's career or speeches to suggest that he would agree with the firery words of Dr. Wright so why do the various Net works continue to show these sipits of his speech. The problems confronting many Americans should be emphasised and I beleive the only candidate that can effect a solution is Senator Obama.

Pennsylvania please vote for Mrs. Clinton before the economy goes down to the point of no return, things are really bad around here too. I know a lot of people whose    work schedule have been cut down. Some of my friends have lost their houses because one family member lost his or her job. Elections are about who wil be the candidate who will do a better job for you. The Clinton were great when they were in the white house.
Hillary will win the nomination because she is the best qualified candidate the democratic party has. Obama's campaign has made more promises to groups like this one that he will never be able to compete. Hillary is the only candidate that has the interest of working American's at heart. Obama can't even tell us how he plans to do anything - he just likes blowing smoke up our backsides.... I have news for you that isn't prosperity, only Clinton has the plans to bring prosperity back to the country. She has PLANS and he has words - and I will take a plan of action over words any day of the year. Obama supporters wake up and pay attention.
Anyone who isn't aware of all of the times Hillary has lied..either isn't informed, or is in denial..it's all out there...she continues to say she was a pivotal player in issue after issue which has been shown over and over to be outright lies.  It's incredible to anyone who can read that some people will be voting without full knowledge of facts on this woman..important facts. It's shameful...a vote is so important...those who don't know the offenses, the number of them, the truth, are like loose cannons..
All these folks who think that "the people" want Obama for president have not been to a Hillary rally and seen all the thousands of people who want with all their hearts to have Hillary as president.  Those are the people that she is listening to.  I hope the people in Pennsylvania give Hillary a very big win!!! Go Hillary!
