Clinton rallies PA women

Posted: Monday, March 24, 2008 3:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
BLUE BELL, Pa. -- In the first such event in weeks, Clinton revved up the crowd at a "Women for Hillary" rally outside Philadelphia Monday.

It was of no surprise to find the gym at Montgomery County Community College populated overwhelmingly by women. They made up about 90 percent of the crowd.

It's been a while since the New York senator hoping to become the first woman president has focused on issues of specific concern to women or held a woman-specific event.

She spent some time talking about the changing attitudes in the country and the erosion of barriers holding back women and others. She said the changes had allowed her and Obama to run for the Democratic nomination.

"I think that says a lot,” she said. It says a lot about who we are as a party and who we are as a country.”

Clinton brought back lines we haven't heard in a long time, like mentioning the women who come up to her and tell her they were born before women could vote but would live long enough to see a woman president. Variations on that phrase were common in the Iowa days.

Clinton said issues like the economy and health care were of special concern to women.

"Women make most of the healthcare decisions in America," she said. "For women, healthcare is a constant worry. You never can have it far from your mind, can you? Because you think about it all the time, 'What happens if--?' You know, I'm the designated worrier in my family and most women I know assume that role and the piece of mind that is never there because, can you let your son or your daughter play sports if you don't have health insurance? What if something happens?"

And the senator brought up the issue of equal pay, which she mentioned last week in West Virginia. She said April 22, the date of the Pennsylvania primary, was national "Equal Pay Day."

"I think it's pretty well-accepted that, still, women are not paid equally with men for doing the same jobs in America," she said, noting the average American woman made about 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. "This is a law that goes back to the early 1960s. This was signed by President Kennedy, and so, we need to finally, once and for all, say in America equality is important, and we're going to finally have equal pay for equal work in every job."

She went on to give her standard stump speech before taking questions from the audience.

NBC's Lauren Appelbaum adds that at the rally, Clinton emphasized her role as a woman -- comparing the role of a caretaker of the family to that of president of the United States.

"Marian [Tasco], Connie [Williams], and Allyson [Schwartz] know that the stakes are so high in this election because they work hard everyday to make a difference," Clinton said after the Philadelphia city councilwoman, state senator, and congresswoman introduced her. "It's kind of like what we try to do in our families, where each and every one of us gets up and does the best we can -- sometimes against some pretty daunting odds. Sometimes it's a problem you have to deal with. Sometimes it's an economic downturn or a health crisis."

Clinton is well known for saying, "It takes a village" to raise a child. The presidential hopeful took it one step further this afternoon. "A country is like a great big family where we have to work together," she said, "because we're better off if everybody's doing better."

In Indiana Bill tries to Rally Indiana voters who can not and will not support his wife.  What's new?  The Clintons just dont understand!
I am PROUND TO SAY I AM ONE OF THESE WOMAN IN PA. I just came from her HQ in Johnstown PA and I can say that it is an AWESOME sight to see so many Woman supporting Sen. Clinton !!!

I am very very proud to be an American as she is the best solution for ALL Americans
Hillary now has an enormous lead in Pennsylvania and is tied with L Ron Obama in N Carolina. People are now awakening from the effects of the Obama stupid gas that enveloped the country in the past months.
If she is fortunate enough to become president, women are not going to receive an automatic pay raise, because the village idiot on your job is not going to respect you because we have a woman president!

It is what's within that commands respect.  She does not speak for all women and her actions are awful.

She needs to get out of this race, where is the DNC and those superdelegates.  She is panning to women and having these gender based discussions...what about what all women and men want?

She is an opportunist!
We get it Hillary, you're a woman. Though you've stated time and again that this race wouldn't be about race or gender, you've used every opportunity to pander to females.
Could Hillary Clinton have beeen at home this past weekend thinking about her chances, hearing from "party elders" and worrying about her image and future standing in the party? As entitled as she feels, as unwilling as she is to ever stop fighting, she is not stupid. It's hard to imagine her ever seeing a path to a nomination that would be anything beyond an awfully pyric victory. Imagine her standing with the party, the electorate and the press if she were to step out of the race for her party and "the country's sake" to do her all to get a Democrat in the White House. Imagine the unity she could engender with a positive, supportive and rousing speech (with Obama at her side?). This would be the time for such an action... before PA. If she wins PA in a big way Obama supporters will claim backlash from Rev. Wright & that this could last thru No. Carolina & Indiana, but that he'll have plenty of time to recover before November. She cannot pass him in delegate count, and I bet she's exhausted. A move like this would cement her leadership role in the party, at the convention and in the Democratic controlled Senate. Also, if Obama should lose she will be the #1 Dem going forward for four years. Musings from a political junkie...feel free to post on politico.com as your own.
Could someone, anyone, advise Hillary that America is comprised of more than women, and, although women may vote for her overwhelmingly, she will need the votes of men, as well, is she wishes to become POTUS.

Seems sexism is alive and well

Obama '08- this woman is for Obama
I am amazed to hear that women will vote for Hillary just because she is a woman and this would be their opportunity to help put the first woman president in office. I support anyone's vote as long as it truly is based on whom they believe to be the most qualified and not on gender. Voting based solely on gender or race is really irresponsible and not what we should be handing to our children. I personally could never vote for Hillary because of her outright lack of integrity and dishonesty. Not "name calling", just the facts .....read the books.
Democratic nomination was Hillary's to lose and she is losing it. How can anyone argue that she is more electable in Nov when she screwed up the primaries. It takes strategy and smarts to win elections... different strategies for primaries and general elections. Hillary has failed in the first test, and is now asking us to trust us with a bigger test in November. Obama is a once in a life time candidate who is winning against odds. And those of you who are calling him racist, you really belong in the other party, please vote for McCain whoever the democratic nominee is. I and an Obama supporter but will vote for Clinton, if she is our nominee.

Rick Sanchez on CNN showed Rev Wrights sermon in context on Sunday night. It is a shame how everyone spun him comments totally out of proportion. If you see the whole thing, you will realize that his sermon is not only NOT controversial. It is fairly accurate.
Hillary always the uniter. What poise and dignity while still haveing the  issues so important, to all of us, right there. She answers question when ever doesnt have to relie on others for answers. I am so proud of her and proud to be affliated with Women for Hillary. She will bring back the glory of America. She will make the people even more proud of our country and bring those to task if she has to, Equal pay should be a given not just a new idea. she will fix that and so many other things. I like the idea she thinks of all of us. I know she has been working for Latino womens pay too. She says they get even less equal pay. Hillary is for everyone and not just for the moment.People put her down for keeping comitments (marriage for example)but if they were in a postion to need a commitment held they would expect it. Difference is they would get it from her for sure.
So Obama said he is going into PA to campaign as he did in IOWA!
Well Senator Clinton is going into PA and campaign as she did in Iowa, NH and the BLUE STATES!
Obama don't got no blue states, lol lol lol he is being suckered along with his cult members.
Hillary is going to win this election, so take a deep breath and looki, lookie! She has more super delegates and thanks to the WRIGHT bum blast the tie will be broken!
Hillary Clinton is a professional door mat

Hillary Clinton has allowed her husband to humiliate her for the past '35 years'
Is THAT part of her '35 years of experience' ?
Being a 'professional victim' ?

How many adulterous sexual affairs will she tolerate ?
Isn't she telling Bill to go ahead ?

What does Bill have to do to make her LEAVE ?
Afraid of being ALONE, Hil ?

What kind of example is she setting for her daughter ?

Don't daughters marry men like their fathers ?

How much has Chelsea been damaged by the pathetic Clinton dysfunction ?

Have Hillary and Bill trained Chelsea that a man is allowed to have multiple extra-marital affairs ?
That a man is allowed to publicly humilitate his wife ?

Are you a Feminist icon, Hillary ?

Where's your husband, Hil ?
Who's that woman with him ?
Where was he last night ?
He didn't come home, did he ?
So Hillary is finally doing something.   Rendell stated that he would like to see the candidates talk about issues...economy, etc. instead of all these distractions.  Well, on the anniversary of the war, his little cry baby candidate was up in Michigan trying to buy a re vote while Obama was out talking about the war.  Obama or Mc Cain but abolutely no tollerance for Hillary and Bill.  And now Rendell.  He won't be getting any tourism $ from those around here. This whole Wright issuse could have been laid to rest but no...the media had to play the ratings game with it.  If we step back and have unrest and more of the Selma stuff.....YOU are to blame, along with the super delegates who didn't already go with Obama when they should have.  This deserves more than a rerun of sound bites.  Are there ethics in media or is it all just like used car salwesmen....him that sounds like Hillary...used car salesman...say or do anything for the sale. Paint the tires, the whole package. Even if it means the car has no breaks, no lights and is a death trap.
Old, white woman that only want to vote for her because they want to see a woman President before they die? That group, you mean? The ones that can close their eyes to scandal after scandal, an affair while in office, and shady business deal because they want a woman? I get ya! This old white woman uses her BRAIN instead of emotion and will vote for the guy that can bring change and unity to the country. Obama '08
F-L-A-S-H URGENT .............."SUPERDELEGATES PRIMARY." -- The Democarts are now floating the idea of holding a 'SUPER-DELEGATES PRIMARY' prior to the party's Convention in August. --- THIS IS AN INSANE IDEA. --- At the SUPER-DELEGATES PRIMARY, largely in private, the party presidential nominee would be chosen by the "party's professional politicians." --- THIS WILL SURELY DESTROY THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY -- IT MUST STOPPED.

Senator Clinton looks absolutely exhausted.
How can we get her to move aside?
This is not about the ambitions of the Clintons, this is about community and country.
Please, Hillary, be realistic and generous of spirit. Back off and away.
SBW (yes, a woman)
Could you imagine if Obama had a Blacks for Obama rally?  The Clinton campaign (and perhaps the press)would treat it like a Black Panther rally...He has NEVER, EVER said to ANY voters "vote for me because I'm black", while on several occasions, Clinton has said, in effect, "vote for me 'cause I'm a woman."  He is trying to bring people of ALL races and genders together, while she continues to target her message to groups that she (and Mark Penn) feel will take out their resentment of Obama on his campaign...how very presidential of her.  I'm so sick of her and her constant appeal to the lowest common denominator. For absolutely sure, she has lost my vote in her next senate campaign...
Please women of America never forget that Planned Parenthood, NARAL and Kate Michaelman are all supporting Barack Obama.  In part because he was the only senator to answer the call to save a women's right to choose when it was threatened in South Dakota.
they are also supporting him because of his 100% voting record.  Even voting "present" when asked to for tactical reasons in the Illinois state senate.
I wish the media wouldn't kill her off just yet and make people think she doesn't deserve a chance to fight for this job.  Let's be realistic here.  Her numbers are going up consistently now, his likewise because of lingering doubts about his electibility in the GE.  As much as everyone wants Obama to beat her in the primaries he just does not transcend his message to the whole country and he won't be able to handle the Republicans come November.  I'm sick of hearing sweeping rhetoric at all his speeches.  She talks to the people about matters that effect ALL of us.  Race is definitely a problem in this country, but not the kind of issue to fall back on when you feel the heat (Wright controversy).  That was a ploy to divert and was shrewd.  I liked her speech, but know she's capable of much, much more.
The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
Go Hillary
Obama does not deserve your votes or the nomination
I would LOVE a woman for President...just NOT THIS WOMAN!!! She is a divisive, manipulative, calculating liar, and I would not want my daughters looking up to her as an example of how to achieve your dreams or be ambitious.  (I think many share my sentiment.)
this is the kind of stuf that wins elections...this is the kind of thing she needs to continue and keep ramming home  day after day after day  and then she'll have a very shot at winning this thing,....after all,  the guy isn't really giving us anything new,  just the same old drbble and hot air!!!

This is Hillary Clinton backing out of the race: by returning to the messages she began with, she hopes to bring her campaign full circle, to leave on her terms.  There will still be some acrimony because of all the negative emotions the Clintons have stirred up, on both sides now, but Hillary is pulling an Arkansas Duck here, à la Huckabee.
looks like clinton has switched from playing the racist card back to her sexist card, is one really any worse than the other? maybe should try and include all americans once like obama has 'always' done.
We love you Hill!! Never give up. Obama will crash and burn once people see who he really is.

I heard a comedian say recently...you know the village that Hillary talks about??  It voted for Obama!!

I'm supporting Obama...and am 50/50 on who to vote for between Hillary and McCain, should it come to that.
Blech.  I was born near Blue Bell, PA, am a 50 plus woman living in NYC, and am shocked that any woman in PA attended her event.  She is not an independent woman.  She and Bill are co-dependent and it is a big turn-off.  Maybe if she divorced Bill and ran on her own I would have more respect for her than I do now.  She values power over integrity and I do not share these values.
Maybe one of Obama's well-heeled friends can buy him
an island and he and Rev. Wright can move there and spew their venom to their heart's desire.  Sounds like a plan to me.
This is one 49 year old white woman who will not be voting for Hillary Clinton.  I chose based on the best person for the job, and she ain't it.
It boggles the mind that she dares to run on the Healthcare issue, again, when she had her shot at it 16 years ago, and failed utterly. Does she imagine that we are brain-dead-females who'll line up and let her walk along the tops of our heads so that she can get to first-female-President-of-the-US-land. Given the state of our Union, and the fact that she is complicit in much of it, I don't think so.
Pulling for Obama '08
No, that is pandering to the women and playing the gender card.
What specific concerns does she have to address? If she cannot be forthright and stop her habitual lying that only foolish cynics will overlook, there is no reason for her to remain in the nominating contest. She would have fared far better than any of her oppnents had she been honest and specfic as to what she meant by her 35 years of experience and other make-believe campaign tactics.
If she wins the nomination, the GOP will come out of its shell and start the real attack on her because, as a seasoned politician with numerous scandals, Republicans know how to attack her honesty and creditibility without appearing liars themselves.
All you Clinton Haters. Dont put your cart before the horse. What comes around goes around. HRC is our only prayer for real changes.America is not ready for a school boy to be our Leader. On job training isnt part of being a President.
If Obama gets the nomination, John McCain will win the presidency hands down. AMERICANS in general (excluding the haters like Daily KOs, Moveon.org and other kool-aid websites and tv shows) love their country and will not tolerate the thought of a guy in white house who panders to people hating america.
Gender is a huge issue in this counrty. The scales are severly tipped in mens direction and it is going to take alot of adressing, just to start! All of your bantering proves how angry men get when we(as women) ask for just half our share. Equality!
We love you Hillary! Don't give up! It's long overdue for a woman in the White House. And for you women who don't agree because she is 'to strong' for your little souls to accept, really need to get your heads screwed on the right way! It's way overdue that the 'boys' haven't been told to sit down, shut up and speak when spoken to... just look at the mess they have gotten us into in this country. It's time for a woman to 'clean house' BIG time!

By the way - I'm a middle aged, white male!
It's so unfair. If Obama held an AA for Obama rally, he would lose the white vote. But Hillary rallies women, & men have no reaction. And some how she's still losing???
here come all the obama people with the insults and the trashing of hillary's sex life which is absolutely nobody's business but hill's and bill's....ever notice that when something is going hillary's way the obama folks start with the insults and the racial stuff??... i don't know maybe it's just me!
If Clinton wins the nomination there is no chance for a demcorat in the white house.  The fact is she has aliented too many democrats for there to be any chance.  As as Obamas love for his country that is pure b.s. spread by the clinton camp and some republicans.  The republicans want hillary as there opponent because they know she has zero chance.
Do we need our future president has integrity and honesty? If the answer is yes, Hillary is out. If the answer is no, we need to pray hard to ask God's forgiveness before we want God Bless America!!
I have no problem with a "Women for Clinton" rally. Women of all colors and ages are in the majority in this country and need to unify behind her. If Bill Richardson can tell me to get behind "his" candidate because he thinks that's what all good Dems should do to save "our" party, then this is my answer.
Sen. Clinton's campaign is seems so eery.  It's just a feeling you get and a real knowing when you see her people talking and sometimes, sometimes, even her talking.  I'm just ready for Democrats to select their leader and have someone who can actually take America in a very different direction. I think Sen. Obama is the one to do just that.
I think having a rally for women is playing the sexist card. If Obama had a rally for blacks Clinton's campaign would have had a field day talking about it. She has alot of doule standards and is constantly being caught up in her lies. I don't understand why so many women are voting for her because it would be great to have a women in the White House. I agree it would be great to have a women in the White House but just not Hillary Clinton. We need change in this country! Obama 2008!
I am your typical middle class Pennsylvanian. (and I'm a male - if that matters) I worry about my job, my health care, and the crime on the streets of the great city of Philadelphia. I hear a lot of pretty words and "fluff" from Obama and a lot of "same old same old" from McCain. I hear answers from Hillary. She has my vote! (and the vote of all my family and friends). Hillary will crush Barack Hussein Obama in the Keystone State. She will win the nomination. She will win the Presidency. I will be one of the "deciders" on April 22 and I will help to put her over the top. HILLARY 08!!!!!!
To those who complain of HIllary's "womens rally" and saying she is wanting votes because of her gender ---- I ask "What is wrong with that?".  Obama plays the race card in some fashion in every speech I hear him say.  So what if there is a large # of women who vote for Hillary - there is a large # of blacks that vote for Obama.  Is there something wrong with either of them?
If the Democrats want the White House back - wise up and vote for Hillary.  There is no way Obama can win against McCain.  And I guarantee, we haven't heard the last on Obama's many lapses in good judgment.
Hillary, needs to register Republican,
Guess what? The same can be said for black people! Life is not suddenly going to get rosey for Black people just because there is a Black man in the White House! The Boss is not suddenly going to be unbiased because our president is Black! The power that any president has is limited to the judicial process that he has to abide by like everyone else. And like you said about women, this country consists of more than just Black people. At least with Hillary, the Democrats will actually have someone qualified on the ticket!

I think it's interesting that Clinton addressed only women—a divisive tactic. Obama addresses everyone. Hillary only knows how to fight and to do so becomes just another proponent of the big lie (cf Bosnia snipers). I'm so tired of it. How dumb does she think we are? Very dumb. Unless Obama's treatment of the electorate as adults somehow breaks through.
For absolutely sure, she has lost my vote in her next senate campaign...
it is about time to have a woman as president.. hillary is a tough fighter and she already proved to america with her win in ohio and texas.. unlike her opponentjust love to give empty speeches,  she is connected with every voters with her real solution and their daily living issued .. way to go hillary..
