Bill: 'She can win;' Obama, well…

Posted: Monday, March 24, 2008 3:23 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
Here are some interesting quotes from two small Bill Clinton events in South Bend, Ind., this morning. The first is from a Dyngus Day celebration at the West Side Democratic Club:

"She can win this race, and we have got to win. And she will win in Florida. And I must say that this new strategy of denying and disempowering and disenfranchising the voters in Florida and Michigan is I believe a terrible mistake. Hillary believes their votes should be counted. And I don't know how we're gonna go to those people in the general election and say you gotta vote for us even though we dumped all over you in the primary. We let New Hampshire go out of turn. They had a Democratic Secretary of State. The Florida voters are totally innocent. They asked to vote on time. So for all those reasons I think she's the most electable.”

VIDEO: Bill Clinton touts his wife's general election chances against McCain during a campaign stop in South Bend, Ind.

The second quote is from a Solidarity Day event at an Elks club:

"I think she can win the election. And I believe that she will win Ohio, Florida, West Virginia, and Arkansas -- four states that we have lost the last two times. If we win Ohio and Florida, it's inconceivable that we could lose the election. And I think that we are running the risk of throwing both Florida and Michigan away if she doesn't get nominated because of the events of the last few days where there has been a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise those voters. And don't you think there has not been a message there. Don't you think that they didn't get it?

“And Sen. McCain is not going to be easy to beat; he has always run well in Michigan. He will run pretty well in Florida. She can win.  Look, if we win these four states we will win the White House; there is no point in doing this if we are not going to win."

Could Hillary Clinton have beeen at home this past weekend thinking about her chances, hearing from "party elders" and worrying about her image and future standing in the party? As entitled as she feels, as unwilling as she is to ever stop fighting, she is not stupid. It's hard to imagine her ever seeing a path to a nomination that would be anything beyond an awfully pyric victory. Imagine her standing with the party, the electorate and the press if she were to step out of the race for her party and "the country's sake" to do her all to get a Democrat in the White House. Imagine the unity she could engender with a positive, supportive and rousing speech (with Obama at her side?). This would be the time for such an action... before PA. If she wins PA in a big way Obama supporters will claim backlash from Rev. Wright & that this could last thru No. Carolina & Indiana, but that he'll have plenty of time to recover before November. She cannot pass him in delegate count, and I bet she's exhausted. A move like this would cement her leadership role in the party, at the convention and in the Democratic controlled Senate. Also, if Obama should lose she will be the #1 Dem going forward for four years. Musings from a political junkie...feel free to post on politico.com as your own.
Interesting that Bill would say "There is no point in doing this if we are not going to win."  Is he saying that Obama is essentialy unelectable?
Bill is 100% right!  Any Obamabot who says otherwise, is as naive and stupid as their candidate.
Ok we have a choice of Billary(Monica Lewinsky, Norman Hsu,Nafta, Paula Jones,Failed Health Care)or we have a choice of McBush(Lobbyist ties, 100 years of war, senile confusion of countries & extremists,embracement of Bush Policies, doesn't know about the economy).Both of which approved this war which is  pulling us into recession. No thanks, I'll take the guy with the bad pastor!!!
Pres. Bill Clinton is right.

Obama will not win NJ, Ohio and PA, and FL and MI, all battleground states or purple states.

Read the local newspapers and go interview the locals. Obama is toast in middle America and beyond.

The Dems should have had this presidency in the bag but the DNC, along with the MSM (MainStream Media), have tried to shove an unqualified candidate down our throats and people are rebelling.
We worry about the poor disinfranchised voters of 2 states, yet, does anyone worry about the millions of babies being murdered by their mothers and abortionists since Roe?  The unborn have rights!
The Clintons keep saying she can win this race, but if so, why has she been losing votes all along? If she could win it, she would have done so. If the superdelegates wanted her, they would already be on board. So far she's lost the popular vote, the pledged delegates, the number of states, and even factoring in FL and MI she's behind, just supposedly not as much.

How does that translate to a win against McCain? Each day she sounds more like him. Given a choice voters will choose the original McCain not a soundalike. With Obama it's real change. Sure, that's a gamble but with the economy tanking and the Iraw death toll rising I think voters will be more than ready for that change.

Suck it up, Bill Clinton, your desperation to be in the White House again is showing. Can't blame you, you had a lot of fun - till you got caught.
Bill Clinton sinks lower and lower every single time he opens his mouth. If there ever was any doubt that Bill and Hillary Clinton would rather see John McCain win in November than Barack Obama, Bill's statements today proved it. Bill and Hillary are desperate and hell bent on destroying the Democratic party. Shame on both of them.
New Hampshire out of turn?  What is he talking about?
Lately I've seen these  so called "polls" indicate American's prefer McCain.And these so called "pundits" stating Obama is losing his white support over Rev Wright.I don't think everyone should put all their eggs in the McBush basket.Don't let the media & polls fool you.Obama has not lost his white support as much as the pundits like us to believe.Although some "whites" might not agree on Obama's choice of pastor or church for that matter, they are smart enough to see through all the smoke & mirrors.Most see in his stance on race & government the apparent authenticy, candor, & transparency that we lack in government.All people would be considered racist if we adopted "guilt by association." Tell McBush to bring it on in November, he makes Rev Wright look like an angel.
Hillary can win. Why else would the surrogates from the Obama camp be so rabid and craven in their sleezy responses.
I'm still not understanding how its Obama's fault on FL and Mich.  He had less to do with it (the whole big mess) than just about anyone.

Great, now he's dissing New Hampshire, and that's a State she won.

Spin master Bill, quite a legacy there.  Lots of (next)November morning quarter-backing, huh?  Just how  IS he doing with his March Madness picks?

Seriously, November math is not the same as primary math.  Noone knows how we'll do but everyone knows we won't do well with a party divided.  Thanks for all the division Bill!

Obama 08
I can't take any more of this bitter Clinton stuff.  They are really good at twisting the truth and showing us their version of "reality".  She is the one making things bitter.  He isn't helping
We are going to win....as long as you and your wife shut your mouths!!  You are the biggest sore losers this country has ever seen!  If you can't win, then take the whole ship down with you.  Yeah, that's a great plan for the Democratic Party.
Your point is ???? OH my lordy the man said his wife could win.Bar the doors and draw the bridges. The nerve of that man. He has to bring Obama into everything???Obama is so arrogant he thinks everything is about him. I didnt see anything wrong I thought it true and good.She can win in Nov. Obama cannt its taht easy and a matter of fact.Just the way it is.He has no one to blame but himself his warped judgement which he says is what we should look at to vote for him.
Why don't Bill just go away?  He has done enough and he clearly was not America's best choice to be president.

Why did we not hear about his errors before he took the highest office in our land? It's clear, he didn't learn at the govenor's mansion, he took his show to the White House.  Hillary knew it and those two treated those women inhumanely and talked about them as if they were nothing.

Now she is courting the women votes.  She cares nothing about no one, except herself!  She is no lady and ALL wrong for America and Bill is all washed up!
He lied to you then and people are still putting their best foot forward for Bonnie and Clyde!
Considering it was the Democratic Party that "dumped" on Michigan and Florida, it is y these folks would vote for a democrat after their own party basically threw them down in the mud and stomped all over them.....
I just want to ask why the American public would want to have anyone who does not place his hand over his heart, pledge alligiance to the flag and be sworn in using the Holy Bible be the next president of the U.S.? Is America going to You-know-where?
It's time to stop quoting this moron. Just because his lips are flapping does not mean his remarks are news worthy.
"And I must say that this new strategy of denying and disempowering and disenfranchising the voters in Florida and Michigan is I believe a terrible mistake."

New strategy?  You mean following the party rules everybody including Hillary Clinton agreed to back when Billary thought it was going to be a coronation so it didn't matter?

Game over, Bill.  You've had your run.  Times change.  The sooner the Democratic Party turns the page and gets out from under your no longer (not that they ever really were) effective DLC strategies, the less likely that the Republican right will be able to come roaring back.

You may have lucked into Ross Perot and your first term back in the day, but you lost Democratic seats in congress, state legislatures and governor's mansions throughout your presidency.  Without your blue dress tied around his neck, Gore would have won the White House in 2000 in a cakewalk and either your "genius" wasn't effective in getting Kerry elected or you preferred a Kerry loss so Hill would only have to wait another 4 years, not 8, to get the presidency you both think she's entitled to.

Well, she's not even going to get the nomination.  Bye, bye Billary.
Bill the American people aren't gonna fall for your lies anymore. Winning a primary doesn't mean you'll win that state.  It simply means that that state would like to see you as the party nominee.  Bill tonight at my high school gym be sure to mention that you're wife has a 40+ negative, and that no one except the DNC is disenfrancising voters in MICH and FLA. If the American people still want the same politics of George Bush and Co. they will vote McCain in General Election, and if the voters of FLA and MICH choose to do such and want to continue to complain about the same old politics-that is their own fault.  Bill, your speeches dont change the educated. Unless you view change as turning off the American people.  I like solutions, how about this one.  If you wanna make the word a better place take a look in the mirror and make a CHANGE! See you tonight.
The key word here is "we", as in me and Hilary.  Winning is all they care about.  The Clintons want to make this into a craps game.  The want to be able to change where they place the chips on the table every time they throw the dice.  They have lost many who supported Bill for years.  Hopefully this will end soon so that they do not lose the Whitehouse in 2008 for the Democratic party like they did in 2000.
If the Clintons don't win, then no Democrat wins.  She agreed with the DNC when she thought she was a slam dunk for the nomination, but now she needs those votes and pretends to be their champion.  This is not leadership, its win at all costs.
You are right Bill, she can and will win!
Every time you email I contribute. Hillary has more support than ever out there.
Obama is toast, it is time for him to go away.
He can not carry one Blue State for CS and he won't.
People have had some peeks into the meager offerings.  Obama, he falls way short of his WORDS!  His buddy and mentor have crucified BO with words.
Wright is a light into the soul of BARAK OBAMA!
He is absolutely right. No matter how some people hate Bill, his statements make sense. I've been saying the same thing here for ages. After Hilary won Ohio, Florida, California, Arkansas, New York, New Jersey and rather strong in Pennsylvania, it just makes a whole lot of sense in terms of electability in November.

No offense to Obama's strong followers but at least a quarter of the states he won will ulitimately vote Republican. His biggest problem are the two swing states that affected the last two elections - Florida and Ohio. He is sure to lose against McCain in Florida and he is in danger in Ohio.

I really hope this election does not turn out to be a Bush vs Gore scenario where Bush won via technicality.

Be objective Democrats if White house is the main goal.
The Democratic Party is being torn apart from it senior leadership.
What if Hillary stays in the race all the way to November?  Even if the Democrats refuse to give her the nomination she could go independant just like Joe Lieberman did in Connecticut.

In a three-way race against Obama and McCain, she would still likely win the electoral votes of enough large states (CA,NY,NJ,PA,FL,MI,MA etc.) to do very well.  Obama would flounder because all those little states like Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi etc are going to stay red.  Most electoral college votes win.
Why isn't her behavior regarding MI & FL not reprehensible?  Are you going into MI & FL with anti-Obama 527's if she doesn't get the nomination?

I guess because you think you stayed in office after lying to a grand jury puts you and your spouse above reproach.
Oh, Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill. Why does she "have to" win? What happens if she doesn't? Does the world come to an end? God bless you, you really want to be back in that White House, doing whatever it is you do, don't you?
Keep talking Bill! Every time you do, Obama wins the state!
Well in this game of high stakes politcal poker Bill Clinton is  ALL IN....Bill is trying to hit a home-run but alas like Bonds or Conceco, Bill has been stripped of his steriods(veil of youthful wymsy) and dosn't have the same stroke that he used ta.  Musings from Bill used to be taken with a grain of salt 'oh Bill, you sly old devil'.  Now after we have gotten to know Bill better we know he's got a dagger not to far behind.  Oh those fightin' Clintons will they never give up?
Bill is correct.Hillary must win the nomination. Obama will not withstand the swiftboaters. He is faltering already. This guy is a racist and a fraud and the Obama cult mentality is finally starting to wear off.
He's absolutely right.  Polls show Obama losing Ohio against McCain, but Clinton wins.  Obama won't win FL and MI, and PA is definately in play for McCain against Obama because of Wright.  NJ is in play for McCain against Obama for the same reason.  And it's not simply because of Wright's statements.  It is because Obama lied about his relationship to Wright when the story broke.

Obama won't win in November, but Hillary has to win PA, WV, KY, IN to make her case.  She's a point behind in NC according to PPP so she could win there as well (and even Chuck Todd admits that if she takes NC she gets the nomination).

We'll see what's more important to the DNC; winning in November, or political correctness.
"And I think that we are running the risk of throwing both Florida and Michigan away if she doesn't get nominated because of the events of the last few days where there has been a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise those voters."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow!  Could this statement be more manipulative???  Translation: "Hillary didn't care about disenfranchising voters in Florida until she so desparately needed to make up her dismal numbers.  As such, it is unfair to disenfranchise voters when Hillary is losing.  As for all the voters who did not vote in Florida and Michigan because they were told their votes wouldn't count or because their candidate wasn't on the ballot...their disenfranchisement wouldn't matter if the primary results stand........as long as Hillary wins."
Give me a break!!!  If Florida and Michigan DO count as they stand, there will be an uproar--from all the voters who would THEN be disenfranchised.  Rules are rules.  Furthermore, the voters in Florida mostly voted due to a property tax amendment on the ballot.  So, not only is the 1.7 million voter count VERY misleading, but think of who those voters were--mostly property owners.  That is HARDLY indicative of what true vote results in Florida would be.
Must we go over this again, Bill?  Someone won the republican primary in all the BIG states too.  Winning OHIO in the primary-"winning" FL in the primary means nothing.  Tone deaf.  I really wish they stopped treating all Americans as if they were low-information voters.
i hope the longer this goes on, the more people see through the Clinton's lies and distortions. Say what you will about Obama but he has been honest with the american people. Don't think he lied about hearing Rev. Wright. He said he wasn't present during the sermons plastered all over tv. He then said he was aware of some controversial statements made by Rev. Wright. The media and other closed minded people spun that into supposedly being a lie. It wasn't. Ask yourself, is he really a racist? Realize that the media has tried for more than a week to come up with more dirt on the Rev.. Have you seen anymore? NO
The problem with this logic is that these may be the ONLY states she can win, if she wins them at all. Obama can win states across the country, something which Clinton has little chance of doing. Independent minded people of any party are far more important in deciding elections than blue collar folks, who will likely vote Democratic anyway.
YES SHE CAN!  No, Obama cannot.
Give it up, Bill.
Dignity will be returning to the White House in the form of President Obama.
"She can win this race, and we have got to win. And she will win in Florida. And I must say that this new strategy of denying and disempowering and disenfranchising the voters in Florida and Michigan is I believe a terrible mistake. Hillary believes their votes should be counted. And I don't know how we're gonna go to those people in the general election and say you gotta vote for us even though we dumped all over you in the primary. We let New Hampshire go out of turn. They had a Democratic Secretary of State. The Florida voters are totally innocent. They asked to vote on time. So for all those reasons I think she's the most electable.”
-----------------------------------------------
What does any of that argument have to do with electability?
The Inconvenient Truth, Part I - Why don't Florida and Michigan have any delegates being seated at the convention at this time?  Because Clinton advisor Harold Ickes voted not to seat the delegates.
The Inconvenient Truth, Part II - Why don't Florida and Michigan have any delegates being seated at the convention at this time?  Because Senator Clinton agreed with the DNC that no delegates would be seated based on the results of the Florida and Michigan primaries.
How many times do we have to go over this, folks?
It is a sad, sad thing to watch this great man flush his legacy down the toilet with stuff like this.
He is simply NOT DEALING IN REALITY. And it is tragic.
He is smart enough to know that his argument that Hillary's winning Ohio in the PRIMARY means that she will win it in the ELECTION and that Obama will not. It does not make any logical sense and he knows it - He is just assuming the voters are dumb enough to fall for his flawed rationale...and that is offensive!
Second, he is behaving as though Obama has disenfranchised Florida and Ohio - this is Patently and provably FALSE - It is not even a statement that resembles reality.
Here are the Realities for Bill and anyone who continues to believe ANYTHING that comes out of the mouth of a CLINTON:
The REALITY is that any state that Hillary could win in the general election, Obama could win as well.
The REALITY is that the state legislature in Michigan and Florida and the DNC are to blame for the problems in Michigan and Florida - NOT Obama.
The REALITY is that IF Hillary were SO opposed to the treatment of Michigan and Florida - She COULD HAVE made all this noise when the descision was made. Clearly she and Bill have an enormous amount of influence in the Democratic party (as evidenced by the hesitation of the SuperDelegates to endorse Obama). IF Hillary had such a problem, she could have used that influence to solve this before it became a problem - THE REALITY IS - THAT IS WHAT LEADERS DO.
The REALITY is that Hillary's campaign is Broke (she has $3 million in the bank whereas Obama has $30 million), hopeless (NO WAY to catch up in delegates or popular vote), and DESPIRATE (witness the victim card being played over and over, and the "kitchen sink" strategy).
I'm tired of listening to the Clintons' diatribes that insult and discount more than half the country! The arrogance is appalling, and if the Superdelegates choose to overturn the POPULAR VOTE AND the PLEDGED DELEGATES...The REALITY is that not only will the Dems lose the election it will be the END of the Democratic party as we know it today.
They will turn their backs on the new generation of voters that Obama has brough into the process. That will have an impact far beyond 2012. And anyone who thinks that Hillary can unite the party after what will be seen as stealing the nomination from her more worthy opponent is NOT dealing in REALITY.
With her disapproval rating, she can't win.
OBAMA CAN WIN!  THE POLICITAL LEADERS IN FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HOLDING TAINTED ELECTIONS THAT CANNOT BE COUNTED.  VOTER'S SHOULD HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.  THERE ARE CLEARLY LEGAL AND LOGISTICAL OBSTACLES TO HOLDING A REVOTE BUT CLEARLY THE CLINTONS ARE PLAYING THIS ISSUE AN BLAMING SENATOR OBAMA AS ANOTHER WAY TO DUPE VOTERS.  THERE IS NO WAY I CAN VOTE FOR THE CLINTONS.
OBAMA '08
I'm an "average white person" and supported Obama at the Nevada caucus. Is there any way I can take my vote back? I happen to love my country and would have supported Hillary had i known how angry Obama's wife is, and how angry his minister is. What's next? Reparations or something? I screwed up and want my vote back!
What!!!....they let NH go "out of turn" ....sure he can say that after winning NH and also certainly because the NH delegate prize is a lot less. This is what I mean folks.....once the Clintons use you for their purpose they move on to the next victim.....that's the Bill way....just ask those women.
Bill Clinton desperately wants to move back to the White House and is in denial.
At this point, the Clinton's appear really desperate.  Bill must have really promised Hillary the WH as means of making up for his transgression.  Together their current strategy can best be characterized as "Hillbilly."  With all of their negativism, coupled with their attempt to stop the Obama campaign from hitting them back, they are only toughening the Obama campaign up for their fight against the Republican political swiftboat.  In the process, I have lost all respect for the Clintons.
I cant believe a word the comes out to hillary's mouth she is a big lier. the real problem is that she is not a good one! She lies about the war she lies about NATF she lies about her experience. so every thing she say is bullS***T. the put me over the ever the Michigan and Floria vote. in January she stated the votes will not count now she bitching that the vote are losing there rights. If she was up we know would say screw the voter.
I loved Bill Clinton however I hate hillary!!!!!!!
Obama 2008 & 2012
I think Hillary would win it, But not with Obama on her ticket.
Alot of us see Obama for what he is and there is no way we would vote for him.
As much as I want Hillary to win, I wont vote for her if Obama is on the ticket with her
This "average white person" will never vote for Obama and his angry black wife...Mine eyes have seen the light!"
