Clinton: 'Misspoke'

Posted: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 9:31 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Clinton's '96 Bosnia trip is getting renewed scrutiny as the campaign -- and the candidate -- now admits Clinton “misspoke” when she talked about her remembrances of that trip. The archive video footage seems to contradict Clinton's memory. "Video footage of that trip shows a smiling Clinton and her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea, casually walking -- without helmets -- from the helicopter to an outdoor welcoming ceremony,” the LA Times writes. "‘On one occasion, she misspoke,’ Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said Monday in reference to her Washington speech.

“In fact, Clinton also referred to having to move the Bosnia welcoming ceremony inside at least one other time, on Feb. 29. But, Wolfson insisted, Clinton was potentially in danger. ‘There were reports of snipers in the hills and they were forced to cut short an event on the tarmac. That is what she wrote in her book,’ he said of Clinton's memoirs.

“The Obama camp jumped on the discrepancies. ‘When you make a false claim that's in your prepared remarks, it's not misspeaking, it's misleading, and it's part of a troubling pattern of Sen. Clinton inflating her foreign policy experience," Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said.’

In a meeting with the joint editorial boards of the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer, Clinton acknowledged that she “misspoke,” made a “misstatement” in her remarks on her 1996 Bosnia trip. Here’s what she said, in part: "Now let me tell you what I can remember, OK -- because what I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire. So I misspoke -- I didn't say that in my book or other times but if I said something that made it seem as though there was actual fire -- that's not what I was told. I was told we had to land a certain way, we had to have our bulletproof stuff on because of the threat of sniper fire."

More: "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a mistatement."

The Boston Globe: “Clinton's recall of Bosnia faulted.”

Clinton should have owned the news cycle with her unveiling of her mortgage/housing plan but the mini-feeding frenzy that developed over the Bosnia trip seemed to step on things.

The Boston Globe on Clinton’s housing speech: “Clinton, seeking primacy on an issue crucial to working-class voters who are her core supporters, proposed that the Federal Housing Administration buy and restructure mortgage debt and called for a new $30 billion federal fund to help state and local governments fight foreclosures.

“The New York senator, who a year ago proposed a moratorium on mortgage foreclosures and more recently a five-year freeze on interest rates, acknowledged that such action could be described as a bailout. But she cast her proposal as a populist parallel to last week's relief for investment banker Bear Stearns by the Federal Reserve, saying ‘it's now time for equally aggressive action to help families avoid foreclosure.’”

Today, the Clinton campaign will unveil its plan to keep Social Security secure and the candidate will take a whack at McCain on the issue. This is not a random day to do Social Security, it's the day that the trustees of Social Security and Medicare release their "annual assessment of the fiscal health of the gov't's two biggest benefit programs."

Clinton also told the Daily News and Inquirer, that “she was not altogether sure how her proposals would work in practice but called the ideas ‘worth pursuing. . . . My biggest complaint is we've spent a year doing relatively little.’” She also hoped the U.S. Supreme Court would rule gun ownership was not an absolute right.

NYT's David Brooks seems to agree with the Politico take that it's over for Clinton. "The only question is whether Clinton herself can step outside the apparatus long enough to turn it off and withdraw voluntarily or whether she will force the rest of her party to intervene and jam the gears.
If she does the former, she would surprise everybody with a display of self-sacrifice. Her campaign would cruise along at a lower register until North Carolina, then use that as an occasion to withdraw. If she does not, she would soldier on doggedly, taking down as many allies as necessary."

Bill Clinton as Sinatra?
- “It’s up to you…” In what’s becoming a familiar refrain, Bill Clinton told another state, Indiana this time, that “it’s up to you.” Reports NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Clinton said, “If Hillary wins a big victory in Pennsylvania, she will win in West Virginia in Kentukcy. That means if you vote for her in Indiana, she can win the popular vote, and I believe then she will be the nominee of the Democratic party and the next president of the United States. It is up to you."

More Bill on this “historic” race: “We’re going to have a historic election regardless. We’re gonna elect either our oldest president ever, or our first African American president, or our first woman president.” Catch that “oldest?”

- When you’re “young at heart…” Bill Clinton later amended his McCain remarks slightly: “This election’s gonna bring a lot of change. We’re either gonna elect the oldest person who’s ever been elected president, Senator McCain, who’s very young at heart.”

I just have one word to say "PATTERN".

By itself, not so significant.  But taken with everything else going on...just MORE untruthfulness.  Like many have suggested, we have seen this in our President for seven years, don't want it anymore.  If she lies on little stuff, how can we trust her on the big stuff.

Obama, makes mistakes but comes clean.  That is much more presidential than Clinton's lying about so much.

Woman for Obama 08

(and its a stupid lie, its the little things that trip you up...and sorry I expanded on my original one word answer)
It's called lying.  She's been saying this since Iowa.  TV Producers doing their jobs should be replaying this and the other times she's said it over and over again.

Here's why this is such a big deal:  she's had thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of people vote for her because of her "experience."  And yet now we're learning that it was all a lie.
Misspoke?  If my teenager misspoketo me like that, he would be waving byebye to the car keys, the XBox, AND the telephone.
And that, my friends, is the trouble with the Clintons. How many of you would "forget" whether you were under fire or not at an airport?

I voted for Bill Clinton twice, and was disappointed in his subsequent behavior.  There is always this "buzz" around them that they shade the truth to protect themselves, at the expense of the American people and the nations' good.

I supported Senator Clinton in the beginning, but now support Senator Obama.  I just don't think the Presidency should be handed down in two families, and honestly, I don't want the drama the Clintons always bring.
Lisa, you are exactly right. It's not this one incident but many where she has either outright lied or horribly inflated her role. It's so stupid too, because there's no reason she should be shy about what she DID do, and rest on that rather than making stuff up!! Americans hate liars....
"Misspoke" == outright LIE!

Imagine if Obama made up such a BS story!
Did Hillary also "misspeak" about SCHIP, FMLA, NAFTA, Macadonia and Northern Ireland?  These accounts too have been debunked as wild exaggerations or terribly misleading, but the TV press gave her a free pass.  Isn't it time you guys looked at this pattern, especially considering that "experience" is the foundation of her campaign and she says the reason that she matches up well against McCain is that she passes "the commander-in-chief" test?
There's a reason a majority of people view Clinton as being dishonest. It's because she lies - bold faced and with conviction.
"Misspeaking" is when you accidentally say you were in Borneo instead of Bosnia.

"Misleading" is when you tell the story COMPLETELY wrong MULTIPLE TIMES in PREPARED statements.

We all have lapses in memory. But to make this mistake is like blacking out an entire day and then making up something that suits your current purposes.
How much "misspeaking" is involved re Peter F. Paul?
Now that I think about it, Obama should extend his vacation for a week or so.  She'll do herself in, or Willy will, if left alone.

Also----does she have the money to stay in another month?  Journalists, help us on that one.
Ok...She "mispoke", how in the world do you misspeak on a topic like this! Hillary mispoke on what could have been a tragic event at the time for her and her daughter. I don't know about the general public..but when I served in the military I remember when my plane was shot at. You don't forget..and all of sudden lie about something like this. Again same ol politics. I have a question...Does it make you wonder where this country is headed when we allow politicians...and politician to grossly mis-lead the public. If we lose our Americans lose what is our status as a great civiliazation..then it's our fault. Not the politicians because we elect them. W. Durant said " Great civilizations are not conquered from external means but rather crumvle from within" The American public needs to bear heed to this. But yeah...but it seems no one in this country likes to hear constructive critisism of itself..or your UNPATRIOTIC! I still will support Obama. He's not perfect but he is the best candidate..I choose honesty any day over someone trying to pull the wool over my eyes. And if he dosen't ghet the nomination...I will vote for McCain! You see America ..African Americans can vote republican. I don't need goverment..to solve my problems!
First, we need to define "sexual relations" for them.
Now we need to define "a lie".

My 6th grader can do better!

How disgusting!
Nothing new here...lies,lies and more lies under the guise of a misstatement. How presidential!!!
And how does a goodwill visit equal expert in
foreign policy?
Well this "typical" white women is voting for
Obama.

The only way for Hillary to get out of this is to go to iraq and land in the middle of a firefight.

Hillary gave a very stupid speech on housing yesterday.  A freeze?  Give me a break.  This goes to show how very inexperienced Hillary is when it comes t the economy.  She promised all those jobs in new York that never materialized, she does nothing for her state (her record is proof enough).  She tells lies about her record in foreign policy and now she will give a speech today that was probably rehashed from the debates sometime ago.

Hillary Clinton
It's the lying that got me here!

The press does seem to give Hillary a 'free pass'. She doesn't get called on her 2006 tax return when  she has made such an issue of non disclosure that we all know there is something in that return she doesn't want the voter's to see until after the election.  And how can Senator Obama's pastor be a huge issue while the Federal case Clinton vs. Paul is swept under the rug. I am begining to believe that the media elects our government officials based on selective reporting.
If you are a loyal democrat, you should be calling for the Clintons to step down. They are bringing the party down. The vitriol aimed at Nader in '00 should be fulled focused on them.

I would not be surprised that this is their strategy to get elected in 2012. Sabotage Obama this  year to open the door for them in 4 years.
i guess misspoke is the new boldfaced lie, or is that is. . .i need a refresher in what is is
"The archive video footage seems to contradict Clinton's memory. "

lol

It "seems" to contradict? How about it CONTRADICTS? Why is the media so afraid to call Senator Clinton what she is, A LIAR!

She has lied about Bosnia, Ireland, SCHIP, NAFTA, 30 years experience, not knowing about the "planted" questions, and the list goes on and on.

If we can't trust Senator Clinton to tell us THE TRUTH now, how can we trust her when she will have the full power of the White House to hide behind?

I've seen this movie before, and it doesn't end well . . .
Snowbama has lied to.  Gimme a break.  And he is a polarizing figure.
This isn't quite as ridiculous as her claim that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary (she wasn't), but it reveals her anabashed compulsion to paint herself in a positive light no matter what. I suppose being married to a charming, if pathological "truth-bender" has something to do with her tainted charater, but ol' "Hills" should remember one key difference: Hubby pres Bill gets away with it because he is warm and charismatic. She, on the other hand, has about as much charm and warmth as a pit viper. For someone so smart, she is making some incredibly stupid mistakes lately.
What is so troubling is that she 'misspoke' with such ease. It's as if she actually believed what she was saying. The blatant lie that Hillary told us and the pathetic explanation for it should concern us all. Like her vote for the war in Iraq or her support for NAFTA, Hillary refuses to take ownership for her actions. Not very presidential.
It’s becoming clearer every day that the only reason Hillary can possibly have to stay in this race is to do everything she can to ensure that John McCain wins in the fall.  Then she can run again against McCain in four years, when the electorate will finally wail “uncle” in response to TWELVE years of Bush…and she can step in as Savior….

Oh wait, she’s already cast herself as Savior, right? Since Bill Richardson is “Judas..."

Those of us around for the Clintons the first time are so used to Clintons lying and considering it a 'minor blip' that they know they can always get out of or survive. Pathetic. Do we want this all over again?
If it was safe why Bill Clinton was not there rather than sent his wife?  Where is American man?  What a shame!
Well, well, I misspoke. This is a politically correct way to say I lied.
She lies, she cannot be trusted.  Aren't we still suffering from 7 years of a president who lies and also(another trait of Hillary's)cannot admit a mistake?  This is not the type of person we need in the White House to make the changes that need to be made.

If Sen. Clinton would have 'owned the news cycle' with her housing speech-Oh boy, let's form another government committee chat-fest!-would have been a really slow news day.
The saddest part here is that it took Sinbad to call her out on her misstatements originally. Sad state of affairs when a comedian is better at the media's job than they are.
Yeah, I often confuse a little girl reading me a poem with sniper fire. Easy mistake to make...
Hillary Clinton is a cold, calculated person and it shows. She does not just misspeak, she lies like a rug and only opens her mouth to switch feet, because she couldn't be honest with the american people if she had to. That's what happens when you lie. You have to tell another lie to cover up the first lie. It's the gift that only Hillary can keep on giving.
It is amazing how Hilliary time & time again looks directly at the camera and the general public and can lie so blatantly. I honestly do not think the Clintons are capable on telling the truth anymore.
The media needs to address this serious Clinton character flaw ! It is frightening to think of them back in the White House.
With a press corp covering the trip back then how did she think such a falsehood would be allowed to pass?

The problem I have is the blatant attempt to beef up the  resume with the statements.  This sniper thing one is just one of several.  Reminds me of the reporter who made up stories.

If I were hiring her the resume exaggerations would be a huge red flag in the job interview that cost her an offer.

Oh guess what, she is asking me to hire her.

I will not vote for her though if she were to get the nomination I will not vote for McCain. I guess that's why they provide that write in thingy.

Sinbad and Sheryl Crow, who accompanied her on the trip, should now claim to have "experience" to be Commander-in-Chief.
Liar! Liar! Pantsuit On Fire!
There were no snipers!  The U.S. Troops were required to unload their weapons because a Clinton was with in range!
Thanks for the biographical "embelishment."  It gives me an idea for my own.

NOW:  I served in the USAF during the mid-1970s, at a SAC Base, guarding nuclear missiles.

AMENDED: I earned the Congressional Medal of Honor, while serving in the USAF in the mid-1970s . . .

What's good enough for Hillary, is good enough for me!
Well if it's a choice between Vampire Hillary or Zombie McCain I guess I'll choose Zombie McCain.  Based on the fact that Vampires go after blood and Zombies crave brains I guess I'd rather have an ineffective president craving brains rather than blood.  Of course the Democrats could still make the right choice and pick Obama, I guess that makes him Blade Obama.
Hey Hillary! That Bosnia visit story was a minor blip alright. Sinbad told the truth and you and Togo played it off saying he's a comedian you know. How many more "4 Pinocchio" rated awards will you receive before you get your stories straight? I could never envision the president sending his wife and daughter to a place too dangerous for him to visit. It’s shameful on you Hillary for even perpetuating the Tuzla lie in the media and in your book. We would not believe that spin of a tale from any first lady. Very dramatic description of your arrival in Bosnia 12 years ago, recounting a landing under sniper fire. Were you on medication at the time? Stop embellishing your experience and stop hurting President Clinton's legacy
Boy oh boy, the Obamaites are in full force today with their bad mouthing and name calling. Why don't you and the media nincompoops focus on her Northern Ireland account ? Now that so many others have stepped forward with their support, you have nothing to gripe about except the tempest in a teapot over whether she was actually under sniper fire in Bosnia. The military commander in charge at the time said there was sniper fire in the mountains. That's enough for me
Do you want to have a first lady actually take fire?

What about Obama? He's barely been to Iraq, has no foreign policy experience and lied about his 20 year old association with Wright as well as all the extra money he took from Rezko. And he is not releasing his State Senate records. He has not held a single meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee since he became chair more than a year ago. And meantime he is taking a vacation in the Caribbean – strange timing, I bet to escape scrutiny whether he will attend Trinity for Easter. Good going Barrack.

C'mon Obamaites -- why don't you take a good look at your candidate. He is a hypocrite and lies about much more serious matters.
Do anyone seriously believed that the US MILITARY AND THE SECRET SERVICE would have allowed a plane to land at the airport with the First Lady and their only child on board just to have a ceremony at a foreign airport.  I think that is an insult to both.
The "problem" with the Clintons - Mr and Mrs.- is that they suffer from a "mis-speaking syndrom" that cannot be treated by therapy.Remember the network tape of Mr.Clinton denying any affairs with Monica?
He was "sorry" about being discover not about the affair. The same with Mrs.Clinton and her "front-lines war" experience. Is this the "experienced character" that we want to lead the country?
The worst part of a pathelogical liar is that they have NO remorse for doing so. In this area, the Clintons are true LEADERS.

Why some voters would even consider ones with a precisely documented record of the same is beyond me.

Integrity MUST matter...
Lee of Michigan: We need you to concentrate.  The topic of this Blog is "Clinton Mispoke".  It's not about Obama. Are you a "CLINTONITE"  Ugh!!
Hmmmm... I wonder if she's waving her finger when she acknowledged that she “misspoke”.
Hillary need therapy. She does not seem to get that we are in the information age. Most things you say can be verified. The possibility of voting for Hillary falls by the day. I am tried of being bent over. She is a LIAR!!!!
SHAME ON YOU, HILLARY CLINTON. :) As the great Confucius says, "she who live in glass house, should dress in basement"
She lied. This was a prepared speech, and she lied. Funny how the media had no problem branding Al Gore as a liar — which it turns out was a lie. How about the media start doing their job for a change and look at all of her claims: Bosnia, Northern Ireland, NAFTA, and the rest. And why won't she release her taxes?
Please, we are not picking on Hillary.  She lied to further her political career. I do not understand how her supporter's can ignore her duplicity and 'look elsewhere' for accomplishments since this claim proved to be a lie.  I was a Hillary supporter too until Senator Obama won 11 States in a row and she started her dirty campaign based on race and religion, two non-issues in a political campaign.  Let's not forget that the Clinton's called on Pastor Wright when Bill was in hot water, I am sure if we look hard enough we will find Hillary's campaign behind the Wright flap.
Even the claim in the book is not true.
There were no sniper threat AT ALL. Her account in THE BOOK IS A LIE TOO!

Helene Cooper, The Times's diplomatic correspondent, reports the following:

I spoke with William Nash, who was the commander of U.S. troops in Bosnia and was at the Tuzla airport with Hillary Clinton. He said there was no threat of sniper fire at the airport during her visit. He said that Mrs. Clinton was gracious during her visit and took pictures with the soldiers, but "she never had her head down. There was no sniper threat that I know of."
I think Hillary's "misspoke" statement sounds similar to Roger Clement's "Misremembered" statement.

Don't you?
