Word of the Day: 'Misspoke'

From NBC’s Ron Allen
Here's my nominee for the word of the day -- if such a thing exists. It came from Hillary Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson yesterday, responding to questions about the senator's description of landing, "under sniper fire," at the Tuzla, Bosnia, airport while First Lady, as the war was winding down, back in 1996.

After citing numerous articles from the time, referring to the danger, and how unusual it was for a first lady to travel to such a war-torn place, Team Clinton conceded she "misspoke" about the sniper fire. And running with, "our heads down," from the airport.

Clinton herself told the editorial boards of the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer that she “misspoke.” Further clarifying her comments, she said the pilot aboard her aircraft had warned there was sniper fire in the area at the time when she was arriving in Tuzla.

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on Hillary Clinton misspeaking about being under fire during a 1996 trip to Bosnia.

“[W]hat I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire,” she said. “So I misspoke -- I didn't say that in my book or other times, but if I said something that made it seem as though there was actual fire -- that's not what I was told. I was told we had to land a certain way, we had to have our bulletproof stuff on because of the threat of sniper fire."

She added later, "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a mistatement."

So why does this matter? Because Clinton has been accused of inflating her national security credentials to prove she has "passed the Commander-In-Chief test. That's the "test" that exists somewhere in the minds of her campaign staff, a test Sen. Barack Obama has not passed, according to Team Clinton, even though by every measure, except electoral votes won, he's winning the race.

Would you think some of the millions who've voted for him think he's fit to be Commander-In-Chief? Most Americans know that's part of the president's job. How can they be wrong and Clinton's advisors be right?

Anyway, back to Bosnia where sniper fire was ringing out. Or not. Believe me, if you've ever been in a place where there is real sniper fire, it’s unforgettable. And indeed, you might misspeak trying to describe the seemingly random horror of it.

Thinking back to those days, Sarajevo was notorious for its sniper alleys during the lengthy Serb siege of the city, down the road from the airport, along the route from the Holiday Inn to the TV station where the western journalists all worked, coming over Mt. Igman, concealed by the early dawn morning fog, barreling down a rutted road into the city in range of Serb positions on the opposite hillsides. In fact, at times, broad stretches of that beautiful city were no-go zones.

As for Tuzla, for the most part, I recall it being a much calmer place. None of that is to say that Sen. Clinton didn't take some risks by traveling there. Even after a strong contingent of western troops arrived, Bosnia was still a bit of a mess. And, as her team points out, Obama probably doesn't have very many, if any, similar experiences to talk about. But, apparently embellishing a story, or "misspeaking" about it, will only lead to more questions about what Clinton really did when she was in places like Bosnia.

For example, did she really help bring peace to Northern Ireland, as she claims in her speeches? I don't recall that being a headline-grabbing story at the time. You would think it would have been all over the American, British and Irish press. "First Lady solves the Troubles." Or “helps” solve.

On her campaign plane recently, Clinton said she made more trips to Northern Ireland than her husband. But was she a key player, as we know former Senator George Mitchell was, in hammering out the Good Friday peace accords in the late 90s?

And lastly, what about her claim of helping to open the Kosovo-Macedonian border for refugees fleeing that conflict? Again, that wasn't a big story at the time. Yes, it’s true a lot of diplomacy goes on behind the scenes. And yes, no one is claiming Clinton did these things single handedly.

Millions of voters believe Clinton is the best candidate to become this nation's leader during a time of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her "Commander-In-Chief test." She has traveled the world, as first lady and as a senator from New York. Though often it seems she was carrying out the traditional role of first lady back then. That usually has nothing to do with dodging sniper fire, opening borders and ending decades old intractable conflicts.

Having spent a considerable amount of time in Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Macedonia and many more than my fair share of places like those, and a lot of it during the Clinton administration, I guess it just catches your attention when someone "misspeaks" about what really might or might not have happened.

Ron Allen was a foreign correspondent based in London from 1992 thru 2003 and extensively covered the events discussed in this story.

The propensity of a Clinton lie is directly proportional to the amount of times she says "you know" over the course of a sentence...
How about honesty...is there a section on that "Commander-in-Chief" test for that?
I know the Clintons have not given that great weight in the past...but...
Just wondering...because I think if it's not ...I want a new test.
"Misspoke" would apply had the comments been made offhand or in a debate, etc. Clinton's remarks were part of a prepared speech and she repeated them. "Misled" would be more appropriate here. What was the line from David Geffin about Hillary lying "with such an ease it's frightening"?
She worked hard for us when Bill was in office. She started working on health care 3 days after he was in office. She loves this country and it's people, all colors. She didn't go on a family vacation in the middle of a race to let things cool off. (by the way didn't see any family in his picture) Any dem that doesn't have respect for her after all she and Bill have done are pitiful. BO is the lier. About Wright, Rezco, and most of all how he feels about race.
what is more important to the american people, Clintons emblishment of sniper fire, or Obama's out right untruths on being part of legislation about immigration in 06 , 07 and again in saying he coauthored legislation with Chris Dodd on HRA help for homeowners? This is a campaign and politicans lie!! I think the issue is what they lie about.
What does it matter? "Misspeak"??????????
All we get are lies from the Clintons..............."I didn't have sex w/ that woman"........"We ran with our heads down.......there was no greeting ceremony".

She out and out lied.  There is no other story.  She lied.

I agree with all the parents on the blog who, when faced with such statements from children, do one of the following punishments (depending on their philosophy of discipline)...

a.  wash mouth out with soap
b.  lecture incessantly about values and how it is wrong to lie (been known to do this one)
c.  withhold privledges (e.g., computer time, tv time) (my usual)
d.  make child write apology note to the person they LIED to (have been known to do this one too)
e.  spank

etc.

She LIED!!  She has a pattern of lying.  If you want that, vote for her.  I, however, will not be.

Woman for Obama 08
"I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a misstatement," she said.

"I SAY A LOT OF THINGS"??????  (So don't hold me accountable for what I have said or might say....)

How can anyone believe anything that passes her lips from here on out?

Scary. Very scary.
Hillary has claimed that she's been fully vetted. It now seems as though this is not the case. If she can stand before the cameras and 'misspeak' about her experience in Bosnia, what else has she misspoken about?

The media is finally questioning the 35 years of 'experience' that Hillary claims to have. Good work.
And if pigs had wings they'd fly I suppose.  How anyone can believe anything that comes from the mouth of a Clinton is beyond me.  With the possible exception of Chelsea who has made a serious gaff or blunder. Yet.
I would agree that Clinton misspoke on all the experience she has been claiming.  So there is no experience that one could vite for her based on now.  The only thing standing is a speech she gave in Beijing.  In that case Obama wins.
If the media picks up on this "she's leading in electoral votes" meme I am going to puke.  That is a RIDICULOUS metric...who believes that if Obama is the nominee we will lose California or New York?  Just because she won the primary DOES NOT mean he won't win those states in the general.  And who believes that she will win Texas in a general election?  It is a STUPID and disingenous and dishonest metric and if the press continues to promote it we can only assume that they too are stupid and disingenous and dishonest.  And gullible.
WHY are you streching out that 'electoral votes' nonsense?  That has nothing to do with the primary process.  That has nothing to do with anything!  Is it shorthand for the fact that Ms. Clinton edged out Obama in larger states?  So what.  He walloped her in smaller states.  News bulletin to Clinton campaign:  Electoral votes do NOT count in primaries.  Apparently this is news to First Read also?
it's time the clintons were held responsible for habitual lying, hillary did not 'misspeak' she got caught lying, again. every word either of the clintons speak is well rehearsed and calculated, these people do not speak 'off the cuff', they have built their legacy on very calculated misdirection and dishonest statements, it is in the fabric of their being, it's just who they are, if you are in one of the states that have not voted yet, please ask yourself, why would anyone want this reprehensible duo back in the whitehouse?
Why is it that whenever Hillary Clinton is caught in a lie she "misspoke"?
Then they accuse the Obama campaign of being unfair?
That is rich!
One thing is clear from this campaign.
Hillary Clinton is unfit to be Commander In Chief.
"Misspoke"? That is a gross Understatement and it speaks to her credibility. HRC is touting her experience as the deciding factor that will hopefully sway voters and now we are finding out that she has been embellishing her resume.
Fmade?
From the CBS footage, it doesn't look like Hillary or Chelsea had a lot of bullet proof stuff on either.  Neither is wearing a helmet, although they are somewhat surrounded by soldiers and others.

Hillary's coat is buttoned up, so she may have had a vest on underneath, but Chelsea's coat is open, and she seems to be wearing a grey sweater and a white turtleneck.

I know that Hillary is a good mom.  I would think that if there had been any discussion of "having on bulletproof stuff" as she states in her interview in Philadelphia, Chelsea would be wearing it.

sigh - just another "misstatement"
Well, well, well.    Billary lies again.  Who would have EVER thunk that?

Come on people, this is nothing new.  This woman has been lying straight to America since the day she stepped foot into the WHite House the FIRST time.  Do you think her divisive personality just disappeared?

Please.

This is just the same ol Clintons doing the same ol thing.  LYING.

Why do you think  Hillary has such negatives?  Because they LYED the first time around repeatedly, and they will continue to LIE all the way back to the WHite HOuse.

No surprise.

The biggest surprise is that the MSM ACTUALLY reported this.

This is actually old news.  Any of you that actually took the time to research the candidates know that her "35 years of experience" is a total LIE.

The part that I don;t understand is how so many women, and I am a woman, would feel proud to have the First Woman President be Hillary Clinton.  I mean come on girls.  THIS woman is a LYER and a CHEAT.  I for one want the first woman PRes to be an honorable woman, a woman that made it to the White HOuse on her own, not on the coattails of her husband, not a woman followed by scandal and LIES.

How embarrassing to the rest of the world, this election is turing out to be.

Pathetic.
Wish Hillary Clinton had been at home this weekend thinking about her chances, hearing from "party elders" and worrying about her image and future standing in the party? As entitled as she feels, as unwilling as she is to ever stop fighting, she is not stupid.

It's hard to imagine her ever seeing a path to a nomination that would be anything beyond an awfully phyrric (spelling?) victory.

Imagine her standing with the party, the electorate and the press if she were to step out for her party and "the country's sake" to do her all to get a Democrat in the White House. Imagine the unity she could engender with a positive, supportive and rousing speech (with Obama at her side?).

This would be the time for such an action... before PA. If she wins PA in a big way Obama supporters will claim backlash from Rev. Wright & that this could last thru No. Carolina & Indiana, but that he'll have plenty of time to recover before November. She cannot pass him in delegate count, and I bet she's exhausted.

A move like this would cement her leadership role in the party, at the convention and in the Democratic controlled Senate. Also, if Obama should lose she will be the  #1 Dem going forward for four years.

Musings from a political junkie...feel free to post on politico.com as your own.
Just the other day I flew to Florida and I coulda sworn I was ducking sniper fire, but now that I think about it, I think I just misspoke.  Actually, there was a little girl there holding flowers.

Sounds ridiculous - who misspeaks about a life-threatening event.  Why are people afraid to call Hillary out for exactly what she is - A LIAR???  My question is even if it were true, how does ducking sniper fire count as foreign policy experience?  Can the survivor of a plane crash claim to now have the experience to be a pilot?

This race has been over - she needs some big victories in the upcoming states and then she needs to win TWICE AS MANY superdelegates as Obama in order to win.  I could see some superdelegates going against the will of the voters but 2/3 of them???  Come on, this is ridiculous!!!
McCain can't remember who we are fighting and where they are, despite 4000 deaths.

Obama can't remember when he was in church.

Hillary  has added things/or collapse memory between trips abroad. (political jet lag)

Translation, we as a public will have to remain interested for the whole term of the next president. Or we are in for a BOHICA moment.(Bend Over Here It Comes Again)
I just find it funny how when Clinton lies people call it a "misspeak" and when Obama tells the truth people call it a lie.

As a mother of 2 I would rather my children tell me the truth no matter what it is about then lie over something that is so stupid just to get themselves out of trouble.

The problem here that people are not realizing is - we just spent 7 years with a president that lies to us constantly as if telling the truth to the american people is somehow not hi on the list of priorities.

Do we really want Hillary Clinton in the house who is and has been lying to us about things that can easily be caught in and when she is caught she acts as if it was no big deal.

I don't know about you guys but I would rather have the guy (Obama) who tells us the truth (race speech) even if we don't like it or want to hear it.

I want a president my kids can look up to and Hillary Clinton is not it.
This latest example of Senator Clinton's embellisment of the 'truth' is just another example of how out of date the Clintons really are. Times have changed. Anything you put out there can quickly be verified or refuted. Both Senator Clinton and President Clinton have to yet to figure this out. They are playing the same OLD games but are getting caught left and right.

In this day and age of technical superiority, it would seem HRC's campaign would become more prudent in her assertions about experience. Instead they are continually introducing "lies", repeating them over and over hoping some of them will 'stick'. Many Americans don't have the time or energy to research these claims for themselves. These outright misrepresentations are aimed at these individuals.

This continuing display of "misspeaking" is another example of the how the Clintons are the Past!! We need the Future!! Even if with his flaws, which he speaks about with candor and admits - something the Clinton campaign would NEVER do - Senator Obama represents the gleaming hope that we can change the direction this country is headed. He represents a chance to really make a difference and bring ALL Americans back into the fold.

I am tired of hearing about how some States count; others don't. I am tired of hearing about how the Rules should be changed, now at the end of the game, because one candidate is losing. I am tired of the lies, misrepresentations, sly innuendoes to make the other candidate seem less patriotic, non-Christian, etc. I am tired of the ranting, anger filled comments coming directly from Senator Clinton's own mouth when something offends her. How is this Presidential?? What is she going to do when someone from another country says or does something that goes against her "grain"??? Is she going to on National TV and tell them to "meet her in Washington"??!!!!

Doesn't it speak volumes to the DNC that their so called coronated Nominee has now found herself in the fight of her life?? As many voters are FOR Senator Clinton as they are AGAINST her. And that is just in the Democratic party. What makes the DNC think that any Republicans or Independents will vote for her in the fall? If her base is the old-time Democratic party and women - which I am tired of this particular statistic - how can she win the General Election??? Her arguments are extremely offensive and assume that most Americans are too stupid to understand so the Super Delegates are the only ones who can save us from ourselves.

It is time to move forward in this country. Enough of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton. I will take Obama's flaws, thank you very much. I will take his inspiration, dedication and PROVEN ability to bring all Americans into the political process.

Thank you for listening. Have a great day!

Obama '08
I am concerned she is making these mistatements. More than just this one. Do we need a President we can't trust or believe?  We've got one of those now. She giggled while telling that tall tale. No laughing matter! I think McCain will expose her a lot more.  But then, that's Hillary. We do not need another Clinton/Bush liar in the WH. We don't need higher food, gas prices and more war. The mortgage mess is real and she wants Greenspan?  We need a new direction that won't leave us worse off than we are now.  I'm sure more of her mistatements will come to light before it's over.Hillary and Bill need to go away for good!
Bush lied about "intelligence" about WMD's to take our nation to war with Iraq. He LIED about there being a connection between Saddam and Bin Laden. Look where lies have gotten us--failed economy, record deficits, war with no end, 4,000 good American soldiers dead for a LIE.

Do you really want another LIAR in the White House? Vote Hillary and get "two for the price of one"!
mispoke as the "word of the day" was the exact thought I had this morning when I read Hillary's quote "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a mistatement."

Why can't they just call it for what it is...lying, misleading, incorrect, mistake, wrong.

That and she uses "you know" more than a middle schooler.
The press really needs to hold HRC's feet to the fire on this.  She didn't simply misspeak - she lied on more than one occasion.

As others have noted, if this happened to Obama, you'd be killing him with it.  Why treat HRC any differently?  Is it because you fear losing access to Bill?

Also, check out this story:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23785773/
Despite Harold Ickes' denials to Roger Simon, the Clinton campaign is actively poaching Obama delegates in Texas.

One more thing:  How about demanding those tax returns?  Obama's return from last year - all 103 pages - is up on the web.  Where are Hillary's???
Sorry, but SNIPER FIRE is not the kind of memory that is ambiguous or fuzzy.

If I asked anybody if they have ever been in sniper fire, they will immediately answer YES or NO! That's not the kind of thing you have to think about. So no, I don't buy that she "accidentally remembered" that event. She made it up, period. Just like she did with her role in bringing peace to Ireland and her position on NAFTA. Her resume is full of fluff and typical first lady duties.

Hillary Clinton - Ready to Lie on Day One!
As I see it they all LIE - Obama included - I still want to see Hillary Clinton, better then being a "non American" that Obama is!
Clintons' Rule #1: It's only a lie if you get caught.
The Clintons have been lying for YEARS!  Why is anyone surprised now?
What truly amazes me... after watching this is the true ease of which she can look people straight in the eye and knowingly continue to out & out LIE!!!

I wouldn't beleive Shrillary if her tongue came notorized!!!

White Women for Obama 08!
Enough of the distortions of the facts. She told blatant lies looking straight into the cameras, with that *DECEPTIVE* grin on her face. This was not a slip of the tongue as she might want to suggest; it was an ABSOLUTE FABRICATION!!! She will say anything to win. God save america!!!
One of the many lessons we teach our children is about lying. In my family if you lie to me how will I every know if you are telling the truth in the future. And once you lie it will take awhile to earn the trust. And if my chilren tried to use the "mis spoken" line to justify their lies. They would only be digging a bigger hole for themselves. It's one of the many lessons learned think before you speak.
Hillary is getting more and more like Bush.

War Monger
Loyalty no matter what
Lying to the People of the United States of America
I've only seen a few comments posted by those who actually support Clinton. Cat got your tongue on this one? No defense to the rescue?
That's because there's nothing to defend.
It's no wonder the liars stay together. Hey, Hillary, tell us the truth: Have you stayed with Bill all these years simply for the name? Simply to advance your career? What else don't we know about you?

Obama '08
Hillary just plain lied. She is probably mad that someone called her on it. I feel so sorry for Chelsea.  It must be rough having two parents who lie about almost everything.
Why doesn't anyone have the 'courage' to say she lied?  How could Clinton 'misspeak' about sniper fire being directed at her in Bosnia?  How could Clinton be trusted on the world stage after observing how she has lied during this campaign?  I pray that Barack Obama crushes her in the next & final contests!
Richard Nixon coined the word "misspoke" is that any help?
"I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a misstatement," she said.

Do the math. 2,000,000 million words divided by 19 hours a day speaking (that leaves one hour to take care of your body and four hours to sleep) equals roughly 1,750 words an hour, or 29 words a second!

oops, I misspoke when i was covering my misstament!

hillary I love ya, but i'm a professional salesman and even i don't color that far out of the lines.
Somebody please tell poor Marianne in New York that United States Sent. Obama is an American.
It appears that to the Clintons entitlement includes lying, nasty innuendo, and specious credentials. They should be ashamed.  I suspect if Hillary returns to the Senate as a defeated candidate for the Presidency, her tall tales describing the embattled campaign will make Falstaff look like an oracle.
Why is the national media not banging the drum louder. She lied. She lied about snipers, she lied about N. Ireland. She lied about NAFTA. She lied about why she voted for war. I think the media is afraid to broadcast this too loudly as it will ruin the cash cow that this endless campaign has become.
And to all of those who think we owe the Clintons somthing. As much as I liked SOME of Bill Clintons policies, he lied to us on national telivision. I for one do not feel I am selling out my fellow progressives in saying that it bothers me to have a President lie to me. I bothers me whether their name is Bush or Clinton.
Also, if Hillary were not a woman, the leaders in the party would have already told her to stop.
I've learned that somtimes you lose. The only thing you can control is how you react. With grace and dignty, or screaming and calling people names.
Or lying.
All I want to say is that if this would have been Barack Obama mispeaking the media would have jumped all over it.  Also I believe that there are certain accounts in a persons life that they can remember in datail, simply because it was so profound and impactful.  I think that this would be one of them , even my 3 year old would remember having to run from enemy fire.  I mean come on it was an outright lie.  Just call it what it is.
What confuses me is she "misspoke" about an incident her child witnessed. How do you teach your children integrity and honesty?
I'm surprised that others are surprised about Hillary's propensity to lie to achieve her ends.  Yes, the "I misspoke" episode is minor, in and of itself, but it's part of a never-ending string of lies and exaggerations that she's told since she entered politics (and probably long before that).  Elect her and you'll get more of the same.
I think it's time for a woman to be president...but one that is smart, respectible and trustworthy.  One that young girls in this country could look up to and admire.  This does not describe Hillary.  We have aready had enough years of the Clintons and their lies...Been there...done it!  It's time for a change...Obama '08!!
What I find terribly interesting is that suddenly, the woman who ragged on Obama for not wanting to participate in more debates, is hedging on a debate in North Carolina.  Could it have something to do with these recent revelations?
God save America, indeed. The worst we can do now is to elect Hillary president after Bush. It would be 12-16 years of deceit and lies to the American people.

She is not fit to be commander in chief.
Come on Mass Media...If Obama had "Misspoke", it would have been a MAJOR scandal. Since when did the media start characterizing a LIE as a "Misspeak"...in the words of the offender, herself??? You guys can start crawling out of her corner, now.
