Word of the Day: 'Misspoke'

Posted: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 11:03 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Ron Allen
Here's my nominee for the word of the day -- if such a thing exists. It came from Hillary Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson yesterday, responding to questions about the senator's description of landing, "under sniper fire," at the Tuzla, Bosnia, airport while First Lady, as the war was winding down, back in 1996.

After citing numerous articles from the time, referring to the danger, and how unusual it was for a first lady to travel to such a war-torn place, Team Clinton conceded she "misspoke" about the sniper fire. And running with, "our heads down," from the airport.

Clinton herself told the editorial boards of the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer that she “misspoke.” Further clarifying her comments, she said the pilot aboard her aircraft had warned there was sniper fire in the area at the time when she was arriving in Tuzla.

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on Hillary Clinton misspeaking about being under fire during a 1996 trip to Bosnia.

“[W]hat I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire,” she said. “So I misspoke -- I didn't say that in my book or other times, but if I said something that made it seem as though there was actual fire -- that's not what I was told. I was told we had to land a certain way, we had to have our bulletproof stuff on because of the threat of sniper fire."

She added later, "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a mistatement."

So why does this matter? Because Clinton has been accused of inflating her national security credentials to prove she has "passed the Commander-In-Chief test. That's the "test" that exists somewhere in the minds of her campaign staff, a test Sen. Barack Obama has not passed, according to Team Clinton, even though by every measure, except electoral votes won, he's winning the race.

Would you think some of the millions who've voted for him think he's fit to be Commander-In-Chief? Most Americans know that's part of the president's job. How can they be wrong and Clinton's advisors be right?

Anyway, back to Bosnia where sniper fire was ringing out. Or not. Believe me, if you've ever been in a place where there is real sniper fire, it’s unforgettable. And indeed, you might misspeak trying to describe the seemingly random horror of it.

Thinking back to those days, Sarajevo was notorious for its sniper alleys during the lengthy Serb siege of the city, down the road from the airport, along the route from the Holiday Inn to the TV station where the western journalists all worked, coming over Mt. Igman, concealed by the early dawn morning fog, barreling down a rutted road into the city in range of Serb positions on the opposite hillsides. In fact, at times, broad stretches of that beautiful city were no-go zones.

As for Tuzla, for the most part, I recall it being a much calmer place. None of that is to say that Sen. Clinton didn't take some risks by traveling there. Even after a strong contingent of western troops arrived, Bosnia was still a bit of a mess. And, as her team points out, Obama probably doesn't have very many, if any, similar experiences to talk about. But, apparently embellishing a story, or "misspeaking" about it, will only lead to more questions about what Clinton really did when she was in places like Bosnia.

For example, did she really help bring peace to Northern Ireland, as she claims in her speeches? I don't recall that being a headline-grabbing story at the time. You would think it would have been all over the American, British and Irish press. "First Lady solves the Troubles." Or “helps” solve.

On her campaign plane recently, Clinton said she made more trips to Northern Ireland than her husband. But was she a key player, as we know former Senator George Mitchell was, in hammering out the Good Friday peace accords in the late 90s?

And lastly, what about her claim of helping to open the Kosovo-Macedonian border for refugees fleeing that conflict? Again, that wasn't a big story at the time. Yes, it’s true a lot of diplomacy goes on behind the scenes. And yes, no one is claiming Clinton did these things single handedly.

Millions of voters believe Clinton is the best candidate to become this nation's leader during a time of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her "Commander-In-Chief test." She has traveled the world, as first lady and as a senator from New York. Though often it seems she was carrying out the traditional role of first lady back then. That usually has nothing to do with dodging sniper fire, opening borders and ending decades old intractable conflicts.

Having spent a considerable amount of time in Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Macedonia and many more than my fair share of places like those, and a lot of it during the Clinton administration, I guess it just catches your attention when someone "misspeaks" about what really might or might not have happened.

In my circle of friends (30 women) we have been meeting periodically for lunch/dinner to discuss the candicates (Dems)and who we should support for President. 12 were lending toward Obama and 18 toward Clinton. We met on last night and all thirty are now Obama supporters. We think that intrigrity and honesty are some of the key factors in this election, especially after seven years of imcompetence and embarrasment from the George Bush Admn. It is past time for us to bring our men and women home from this disasterous war that we have spent five long years fighting someone else's civil war, while our own country suffers, mainly due to the ignorance of George Bush. It is time to focus on America and our issues at home and we believe Barack Obama is the only one to do this. John McCain will extend this war, which means our grandchildren, who are in sixth and seven grades will been sent to fight someone's civil war. Bring Intrigrity Back to the White House and the United States of America!!!

Women for Barack Obama 08'
Vets for the Truth, posts at its website a definition of "swiftboating" as "exposing the lies, deceit and fraud of self-glorifying public officials or candidates for office who exaggerate their military service by lying about their feats of heroism and combat wounds."
Just curious.  Do all of those individuals who insist that Hillary "deliberately" lied about her trip to Bosnia also think that Obama "deliberately" lied when he first said he had only done 5 hours of legal work for Tony Rezko and no one had an inkling that he was in trouble; but then admitted he asked Rezko to do a walk-through of a property he was interested in buying and said he had asked Rezko if the rumors that he was in trouble were true?  And, first said he had only taken $150,000 in campaign donations from Rezko and then admitted it was closer to $250,000?

Oh yes, and then we should believe that he never had heard about the controversial statements of his Pastor until February 2007 when he was about to declare his candidacy?

Hillary and Bill lie in soundbites and cycles - they have learned that they can throw something deceptive out 'there' and then wait out the storm of response - but still get the benefit of the damage and carnage.

Hillary lied.  She lied about the incident and she lied about  what the incident was supposed to demonstrate about her.

Why is this important?  Because if she gets a free pass on this then she knows that the public and press will give her a free pass on going back on her word to not attempt to grab already-pledged delegates - which she already has begun to do with robo calls to folks who have pledged to Obama.

This is just one facet of the extent of their dishonesty - they are ALL about winning, getting 'in,' and crushing those around them.
One uses the word "misspoke" when the only other word left to describe what you did is "lied."
I am glad that the press is finally allowing the truth about Hillery Clinton to see the light of scrutiny.  She really hasn't been vetted on her white house years.....Bill was.  She has mis-spoken alot about those eight years.  Most of those years she was trying to get away from her husbands problems(6 or the 8 years).  It is incredible how little Hillery thinks of her supporters..... that she would lie so openly and think she can get away from it.  It your life is in peril you don't "forget it"......but you may lie about it if you believe you have always gotten away with it.
Between Hillary's "mispeaks" aka "lies" and Obama's defense of the indefensible, coupled with the fact that neither of them has any credible experience, I now conclude, to my own surprise, that the only legitimate choice for President is McCain.  Amazing!
Hello, guess what? All politicians lie! It is what they lie about that is most important. Like having weapons of mass destruction...and costing Americans billions of dollars. Who really cares that Bill got a BJ in the office. Just because he can...who would want to put their lips on G Bush, and if they did offer do you think he turned it down? Please, he is a man!!! And that personal incident that is none of our business didn't really cost us anything but publicity, but the war is costing us a recession. And how rich  Bush is getting by stealing oil from Iraq. That is honesty. Seriously, how about stop pointing the finger at everyone and standing together like we are supposed to do?! What is wrong with people today...noone seems to care about real issues. Like healthcare.
Amazing that a former First Lady with such social graces and travels as Hillary would fall all over the word she was really looking for when confonted about something she said.  I believe the word she was looking for is a four letter word spelled, L-I-E-D, but she just couldn't bring herself to say it.  So, the person who stands trial for purjury, should just say they misspoke and everything will be ok, right?   Like my grandfather always said, "A person who will lie to you will steal from you and a person who will steal from you will kill you!"  Thanks for the advice, Grandpaw, I know who will get my vote.
It is encouraging to see for myself that there are so many intelligent, articulate, and erudite, Obama supporters here. It is refreshing to hear all the different opinions that I may or may not have thought of myself. I find that most Obama supporters tend to see the spin the media plays with every story much clearer: than some of the other candidates’ supporters.

However I am concerned though that our fellow Obama supporters are day after day being beaten down over on the CNN and Fox News web sites and the like. There are many places where Obama supporters are writing passionate, undeniably good things about Barack Obama. Unfortunately, these are frequently found on websites where the majority of the users are already die-hard Obama supporters‘.
I suggest that we organize or unofficially remember to post these great comments on boards where we can actually reach out to our fellow Americans.  For the benefit of our peers who may still be undecided or under illusions/false pretenses, or perhaps under the persuasion of biased, dubious reports. That may have never heard any of their peers speaking favorably and insightfully about Obama.  I’m not saying that we have to go out and debate anyone or even read any comments or replies after which. I am only suggesting if or when we write something great (like so many of you have here). That we share the wealth with these other sights where open minded intelligent comments about Barack; may be in short supply or simply just not to be found.

I sometimes read the comments on CNN and flinch, but exhale and navigate away without challenging the naysayer’s or Obama bashers.  I don’t think I am the only one but what I’m trying to get at is this. I think all these very well written comments would be much more significant in places where Obama supporters aren’t in the majority; and if you do write something great on an Obama favorable or non biased site.  Why don’t we cut and paste the comment on to another site where people may not have heard or thought of that opinion before. I think the campaign and Barack Obama and the United States of America would be far better served; with more of us here today sharing our views with the rest of our peers. Peers who’s train of thought might be stuck ,or caught in the same 24 hors news cycle that Fox has rehashed and nearly ODed on for the last 168 hours+.
Why won't Hillary stop the attacks? Stop misspeaking, stop all the negativity, and McCain supporting/ cheerleading. She is single-handedly ruining whatever HOPE that the Democratic Party had because she has no other hope. Except for the less than slim chance that these negative “”Kitchen Sink”” dirty smear campaign tactics may sink the Obama ship; and knock the wind (of change & Hope) out of his lofty sails.

When the “3:AM Girl” turns out to be an Obama supporter how Bush stubborn do you have to be in order not  to see that the winds of change are not blowing in your direction. In addition, this is coming from someone who loved the Clinton’s…

Oh yes and that picture is our soldiers just showing off their fatigues (combat uniforms) , you know for no reason.  OK so she exagerated but that picture actually looks pretty darn good for her Commander in Cheif argument, its like a poster, HeeHee, keep showing it, it is much more appealing than a Pastor ranting about how we brought on 911 upon oursleves.
The new headline should be, Media is suckered into showing an awesome picture of a young Hilary shaking hands with our soldiers in combat uniform.
Little children lose their TV and PC access for telling lies like Hillary's Bosnia tale.  Re-writing history is not 'misspeaking.'
It seems the question is; "Does this lie or mistake, whichever it is, make her unworthy of the office of President of the U.S.?" To answer that, we have to look to the illness rather than the symptom. Is her propensity to fabricate pathalogical or merely theatrical?
If she is simply a diva who uses glorified versions of her own accomplishments, then she becomes a typical politician. If the licentious vein runs to her core, then she is purely self motivated, and can't be trusted.
So which is it? Look to the evidence for your answer. When she is caught, does she humbly admit to a bit of theatric sensationalism.
'We are politicians after all, and we all do it from time to time.' Said with a mischevious grin and just the right dose of conspiratorial alliance would have been...well...Clintonesque! People love that stuff. She chose instead to further obfuscate the issue by saying she "misspoke". Her obvious panic in dealing with this issue reveals some very troubling personal traits.
First: perjury is a trend with her. Perhaps even an autonomic psychological response to her environment. This would suggest a tendency toward sociopathic behavior which could lead to despotic actions. Though limited by the checks and balances system, this type of person can still bring significant ill to pass as Commander-In-Chief. Case in point, Iraq!
Second: Her opinion of the U.S. voter is very low. We must be pretty dumb and unresourcefull to swallow the tale she is telling and not uncover the truth. It is this type of thinking that often causes politicians to act contrary to the best wishes of their constituants. After all, we aren't smart enough to make wise choices, right?
Third: Her expectations of spinning her way out of this shows a fundamental lack of imagination. She simply couldn't visualize the logical results of her continued deceit. In this age, people are going to find proof of the truth and present it to the masses.
Finally: Hillary panics!!! We can not afford this in our C.I.C. "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a mistatement." She sounds, you know, like, you know, one of our, you know, teenage children. Simple math Hillary; 86,400 seconds in a day. Hillary speaks millions of words each day. On average, how many words does Hillary speak each second of every day?
The evidence is impirical. We must conclude the her fraudulent behavior is not added character but character flaw. The danger to the U.S. and the world is to great for us to look the other way. We must not accept Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Can we, the American people, stand more of the lies, scandal and disgrace that will surely come with another Clinton Administration? The Clintons are involved in an Election Fraud Civil Law Suit filed by Peter Franklin Paul. It has been called "Hillarygate", and " The largest Election Law Fraud in History." Paul V Clinton has been hidden from
the public by the mainstream media for seven years, and is now scheduled to begin in October, which  places it, conveniently for the Republican Party, very close to the election. The case was set for trial in March 2007 but it was delayed due to an appeal of a lower-court's decision to dismiss Senator Clinton as a defendant. The California Supreme Court upheld that decision, but Senator Clinton will be required to testify under oath along with her husband and her daughter as  material witnesses. In his lawsuit, Peter Franklin Paul charges Senator Clinton and her husband with fraud, coercion, and a massive scheme to conceal illegal fundraising.
The United States Justice Foundation has set up a web site on Paul's Case called THe Hillary Clinton Accountability Project (Hillcap.org) Check it out.
As I became more familiar with this case, I was not surprised to see the names of several people with strong ties to the Clinton Campaign. Of all the lies  distortions and spin coming from the Clinton Camp, this up coming Case troubles me most. Obama 08!
Is Hilary on some kind of mind-altering prescription?? What is shown on the footage and the description she gave are like 2 different events on 2 different days.  I saw no running or ducking and dodging in the footage! How fantastical! Most of us stopped playing "make believe" BEFORE we became adults. And how very idiotic to say "I just misspoke....you know..." No, we don't know Hillary! OMG! It never ends with the Clintons. This is who they were when Bill was governor of Arkansas (yes, I'm an Arkansan) and this is who they will be if, God Forbid, she is voted in as our 'faithful' leader. Maybe we should ask her if she's ever seen UFOs or aliens.  It may not get us any closer to solving the UFO mystery, but at least it will be a very imaginative and fantastical story to listen to.
Clinton supporters are enablers.
Here's my fear.  If the telephone rings are 3am, will it be Hillary calling the Pentagon to say "Nevermind.  I misspoke."

When the commander in chief calls a strike, on another country there rarely is any time for a "due-over.
Getting little if any mention on this matter is the question of judgement.  Why would the First Lady, after having been briefed on the dangers of going to this place, take her child, Chelsea, into harms way?
I would have expected her recall to be more like, “[W]hat I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire, so I requested we land someplace where my daughter wouldn't be in such grave danger”.
