The delegate fight: Is the party moving?

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 10:06 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Phil Bredesen, the two-term governor of Tennessee who is uncommitted to either Clinton or Obama, “joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in warning that superdelegates should not overturn the outcome from primaries and caucuses,” Politico reports. “If Obama were denied the nomination by Democratic insiders after winning the party’s popular vote, Bredesen said, ‘There would be hell to pay in the party for a long time to come.’”

And check out this exchange with Sen. Maj. Leader Harry Reid in the Las Vegas Journal-Review: “Reid said he remains convinced the nominee will be decided well before the August national convention. He wore a serene and mysterious smile….

Question: Do you still think the Democratic race can be resolved before the convention?
Reid: Easy.
Q: How is that?
Reid: It will be done.
Q: It just will?
Reid: Yep.
Q: Magically?
Reid: No, it will be done. I had a conversation with Governor Dean (Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean) today. Things are being done.

On Michigan and Florida, Reid said, "Michigan and Florida wouldn't play by the rules. They're not my rules. They're not the caucus' rules. They're DNC rules. They broke the rules. Michigan and Florida delegates are going to be seated. They're going to be a part of the convention. It's a question of whether anything can be worked out to change this prior to the 2,025. They're the ones causing all the problems. No one else did. And so they will be seated. They're big states. They represent 29 million people. We want to make sure their delegates are part of the convention that takes place in Denver."

PENNSYLVANIA: 4/22 (158 delegates)
Some PA notes, per NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger:
The economy is the focus of Clinton’s first 30-second ads in Pennsylvania. It is believed her ad buy is significantly less than Obama’s and focuses primarily in the Philadelphia media market. She spent about $600,000, Obama spent close to $1.6 million.

Emily’s List will be launching a direct mail and telephone campaign on Clinton’s behalf, starting next week. “They'll specifically be targeting ‘non-college educated women, college women and older women who have suffered the most in this economic down-turn and thus have the most at stake in this election.’ They will target Philadelphia and its suburbs for now, but don’t rule out expanding throughout the state.

The Philadelphia Inquirer notes the irony of Clinton speaking to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: “The Tribune-Review is owned by billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, a financier of conservative causes, including, at one point, research into Bill Clinton's alleged sexual affairs when he was governor of Arkansas. He was a prominent part of the ‘vast right-wing conspiracy’ that Hillary Clinton blamed for the couple's political woes in a 1998 TV interview shortly after the Monica Lewinsky affair came to light. She said yesterday her encounter with Scaife ‘was actually very pleasant.’ ‘There was a lot of discussion of foreign and domestic issues,’ Clinton said. ‘I said at the beginning that . . . it was somewhat counterintuitive for me to be there.’”

Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia suggests a forum on urban issues before the primary. Clinton quickly accepted.

Clinton waiting until right before Election Day to release her tax records may be a move from the Ed Rendell playbook, John Baer says. The impact of the returns would be minimized if reporters don’t have weeks to review them. “Does anyone think seven or eight years of Clinton finances, especially Bill's, won't make for interesting reading? I mean why else delay so long?”

Rep. Tim Holden says he hasn’t endorsed Clinton, even though he marched with her at a St. Patrick’s Day parade. He said he hadn’t heard from the Obama camp, but that was quickly rectified.

NORTH CAROLINA: 5/6 (115 delegates)
Some NC notes, per NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann’s:
Yesterday’s new poll numbers bouncing around the state from Public Policy Polling (PPP) show Barack Obama up by over 20 points over Hillary Clinton. There's much debate over the legitimacy of that result, in part because of recent changes in the company's sampling methodology. But the interpretations of both campaigns reveal quite a bit about the expectations-setting game in the Tar Heel State. The Winston-Salem Journal's James Romoser asked both campaigns' state bigs about the poll, which shows a lead jump from a single point for Obama last week to over 20 yesterday. He writes: "Averell 'Ace' Smith, Clinton’s North Carolina director, said he believes the truth is somewhere in between those two numbers. Craig Schirmer, Obama’s North Carolina director, said he thinks the poll showing a one-point lead is closer to the truth." Smith also noted that his candidate faces long odds here, noting that a win for her "would probably be one of the greatest upsets, probably in the last 10 years."

Team Barack Obama descends on the state for the second time in a week, with an afternoon event in Greensboro. The visit caused a minor stir last week when rumors circulated that the campaign had canceled an earlier Greensboro event for security reasons. The chatter was eventually knocked down, but that doesn't stop the city paper here from leading off its coverage of today's visit with a description of local law enforcement's effort to supplement the USSS.

One of Carolina's pols, striving to become the second ever openly gay nominee for the US Senate, runs his campaign on a new model that journalists say is inspired by the grassroots politics perfected by Barack Obama.

One of the biggest questions in the mind of the local press corps here swirls around a potential debate in the state sometime between now and primary day. Every day sees a new rumor about the state's colleges and universities' plotting to be the site of a potential CBS debate. In a conference call yesterday, reporters all but invited an Obama surrogate to bash Clinton over not having formally accepted the invite yet.

I think Reid is right; about the nominee and MI and FL. The party leaders will end this by the time NC votes. They are probably trying to get Hill to concede or accept the number 2 slot. Which wouldn't be all bad.
I can't take any more of the Clinton's spin.
Go Obama!
It's now very clear that the Clintons are delaying the release of their tax returns. Their actions confirm that they are hiding something.

Hillary not only claims to have foreign policy experience, but she also claims to be fully vetted. There are serious doubts as to whether she is as experienced as she has said that she is and now there are doubts if she is fully vetted.
The thing that really has to "MOVE" is a move by party leaders to fix this godawful system that gives the Republican party all the ammo they need to continue to camp out in the oval office.

Reed and Pelosi, as leaders, should be looking at the big picture AND FIXING IT, instead of dicking around with these details.
They need to move and move now.  I don't understand why they wouldn't.  They would be justified in nominating Obama and if they chose Hillary, the damage would be done.  Whether it is done now or in August, the damage would be done.  Some might even suggest that doing that now would give the party additional time to heal.
Come on guys....strong arm Hillary into dropping out for the "good of the party". The sooner she's out of this with her nastiness, the sooner we can move on and get behind the ONLY candidate that can bring us back together! Go Obama '08!!!!
Sounds like some party leaders are getting ready to shut this thing down. I imagine they will probably wait until after PA. But if Clinton doesn't win by AT LEAST 10 points in PA, expect huge movement of super delegates (I'm talking 20-50 delegates) towards Obama.
If the party were to split due to the divisiveness of the campaign, what is expected of supporters of the candidate who failed to secure the nomination exactly asked to do - how do we heal?

I support Obama, but in the event Hillary wins the nomination, I don't know how I could support her.  Risking further weighting the courts to the right, endless wars, domestic plight, I still am unable to throw my support to a candidate who in my opinion will do nothing but perpetuate the type of politics that says to pols that it is okay to walk out on a vote.  I mean vote nay, don't vote; but a walkout is a bit silly and I am paying for.
Perhaps the genes will tell if Obama is ready to be president and commander in chief. The geneology study of Barak Obama shows that he is related to presidents Madison, Truman, Johnson and Ford.  He is also related to General Robert E. Lee and Winston Churchill.
The Supers are moving but they need to pick up the pace a bit. They need to invite Hillary to lunch and tell her to take a seat so we can move on with a real race between Obama and McCain which Obama will win.
That's probably because North Carolina won't be important to Hillary until AFTER she loses there and whines about it not being fair. Get out NOW! You're becoming pathetic.
What about if Hillary is not allowed a win (fl and Mi) left out. They are trying to close down the election early for fear Hillary would win. This threatening is rediculous. They are saying give it to Obama cause the blacks will be mad but to bad if women are. Thats the drift? Trying to make Hillary people feel there vote doesnt count so why vote. All the rotten politics comeing home to roost. If we all go that extra mile for Hillary they have to give it to her. Obama wont win in Nov. Hillary has more of the electorial votes. That is what elects a canadate and dont count on dem states auto. giving it to Obama. Not this time.If women arent as much to take into account than lets see how they feel in nov if Obama is the nom .not to mention how long women can remember too. They say delegates cannt go against there peoples votes. OK Kerry,Kennedy and Richardson has to move to Hillarys side. How about the undue pressure been put on these delegates ,one of hillarys had to change couldnt take the pressure cause he was Black.other way around there would be a congressional investagation. wooing is one thing old time pressure another. The politics Obama is going to change. What a laugh.
Well, obviously I'm' not a superdelegate.

But I know I feel like moving on (personally).  I know who I am supporting absent some earth shattering revelation.  So let's just say, I'll be spending less time on MSM (mainstream media) and more time, well, moving on!

Obama 08
The party insiders have been fed up with this Clinton drama. i think that they were too afraid to move, but now they know if they do not they are inevitably destroying thier own party.

Sen. Clinton says that without MI and FL, if Sen. Obama is the candidate, he's not legitimate.
Well, there aren't going to be any re-votes or placing of existing votes, so if Hillary pulls a big longshot and is the nominee, is SHE LEGITIMATE?
"Reid: It will be done".....interesting
Hell to pay if this is taken from Hillary. If this party is so afraid of Obama and blacks than they are in the wrong business.Heard of a woman scorned??Obama started this with his grandious speech someone wrote saying typical white woman was afraid if she saw a black on street. If this is true today it is of Obamas doing and we dont want that in power. If they try and steal this from Hillary there will be hell to pay and the fear of blacks that Obama has perpetuated is mild to bunch of women. Is this the militant black society you want??? Not even blacks want this. They arent all behind Obama even though he tries to make it look like they are. I know a lot of God fearing country loveing and people careing blacks that are not for this movement.God Bless America.
If the superdelegates were to overturn the will of the voters, in spite of the Obama lead, the millions of Obama voters would be disenfranchised, disillusioned, and would probably not vote in the general election, thus giving the election to McCain.
no delegate is required by party rules to vote for the candidate for which they're pledged,” said Ickes. “I mean obviously circumstances can change, and people's minds can change about the viability of a particular candidate and that's permitted now under our rules ever since the 1980 convention.”
---------------------------------------
ALL delegates can change , they can vote as they choose.  Fact!
Obama people scared. Imagine what else can come out. He hasnt started airing his laundry yet. Do the supers think  giveing him an illagetament victory will help when the other shoes fall?? They should and will wait till after all have voted. I can not imagine any other way. Specially with Obamas sneeky closeing out Fl and MI.Think they will vote Obama after his foot dragging and knocking them out?? Hillary won and I think maybe she could help there. If the Dems give this to Obama unfairly bet Repubs in office again.Life long dems will vote Repub to keep Obama out. I believe they feel- let all vote and Hillary will be ahead in popular and that scares Obama to death. He will try anything to close this down. Watch close.
Dear PENNSYLVANIAN'S,
When we make our choice in April, we must act with truth, and honor. We have been called bigots, and stupid, because it appears to those scrutinizing our polls that we refuse to contemplate Senator Clinton's unabashed lying, and flip-flopping, no matter the cost to our own economic well-being. Ours are the families whose young are dead, and dying because of Hillary's vote for an immoral war. She assumes we will vote for her purely out of prejudice against Senator Obama, irregardless of her low character. She thinks she can be caught in lie, after lie, and still count our votes as hers, even before we cast them. Well the polls are turning away from her, and I am proud to say I am a Pennsylvanian.

Pulling for Obama '08
Attention Clinton Supporters:

We must all write directly to Reed and Pelosi and DEMAND that they not disenfranchise 10 more states. These American voters has a right to voice their opinion about a nominee and the leaders of the House and Senate and DNC should stop trying to strong-arm Hillary Clinton out of the race because of some mythological 'party destruction' nonsense.  These leaders keep talking about the voters as the most important element in the process.  If they believe that, then they need to butt out and let the process take it's course.

They say "....superdelegates should not overturn the outcome from primaries and caucuses."

EXACTLY!  ALL THE PRIMARIES and ALL THE CAUCUSES, not just 40 of them.

WRITE TO CONGRESS TODAY AND EXPRESS YOUR DISSATISCATION WITH BACKROOM DEALS.
Give it up guys, it is so tied up, BO wants to take it before any one gets to vote since the WRIGHT debacle!

He will lose the GE, he has sat for 20 years in the church of hate! Sat with his children, with his wife and then cast his grandmother as a racist.
NEVER EVER will he win the GE, get it through your thick heads albeit with Rose colored glasses!
Are you all so starry eyed you do not see the repukes gleefully waiting to pound BO into the ground!
The DNC and Pafrty leaders either push worthless, lying HRC out of the way soon, or lose in November. She has become a complete joke with her lies about Irish peace, bullets in Bosnia, & using the race card.I am embarrassed for America that so many people are still supporting her. And The military leaders now state that her comments about Bosnia make her a ridiculous joke. There is NO leadership potential with her.
I don't think the only concern is how black people will recact, as some of the other commenters are trying to suggest.  The real problem is that to win, Hillary would have to do some really nasty damage to Obama.  Yes, this will upset blacks, who are the dems most loyal base.  But it will also be very upsetting to young people who have put their hopes and dreams in this man.  Obama, much like RFK, has inspired many young people to get involved in the political process, and it would be a shame to dash their dreams.

Also, most of the wealthy, well-educated progressives and liberals support Obama.  These people are in the Democratic party for ideological reasons; they are not dependent on the policies of the Democratic party to make ends meet.  So, they will have no problem abstaining from voting or voting for McCain.

So, you hyper-racial nuts should really think about the far-reaching negative effects of Clinton "winning" the nomination.  It would truly split our party apart.

My advice to you all: Be a Dem, not a hater.
This idea of Hillary quitting now is ridiculous and self-serving for Obama. There are TEN primary contests to go. Puerto Rico (55 delegates) even changed its caucus to a primary election on June 1 because their votes will actually mean something this year!!!! Note: Puerto Rico has more delegates than Oregon.

Hillary is ahead in Pennsylvania (158), West Virginia (28), Kentucky (51), and has a good chance at Indiana (72) and Puerto Rico (55). No matter that last PPP poll... Hillary was making headway in North Carolina (115). So Obama looks right now that he has Guam (4) as well as Oregon (52), Montana (16), and South Dakota (15).

If Hillary wins 5 primaries with a good showing... and especially if she wins North Carolina... than there is a definite argument for Hillary that she has the momentum and is the better candidate in the general.

And when are you neophytes going to get it through your head that the superdelegates are in place for independent judgement? The Democratic party tried elected delegates ONLY at one time and it was a disaster. This is a Democratic primary (aka a political party) and not an election for representative government.

Notable in the last Rasmussen poll that 74% of Democrats supported Hillary and 67% supported Obama.  Guess what else?... this argument of Obama supporters not voting for Hillary is way overshadowed by the number of Hillary supporters that will not vote for Obama. There are two sides to that coin.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  IT'S THE YOUNG PEOPLE, STUPID.  If we allow Hillary and the media to strongarm the superdelegates into nominating Hillary after the voters have clearly given their energy to Obama, we will once again restrain our country's future and reduce our deminishing standing even more in the world.  It is SAD that we are so closed minded and biased that we cannot see that its time for a change.  Didn't Bush prove that our forefathers had it right?  That there should be separation between church and state?  Our young are stepping up.  Let them.  Stop this and act like the adults they are showing us they have become.
You can see it all on Harry Reid's face and in his clear, concise answers.  It's over for Hill/Bill - and the "powers that be" are moving behind the scenes to "handle the situation".
I'm still worried that if the supers tell Hillary its over, she's setting herself up to get the VP slot with McCain, a stunning "unity" ticket that would be the only possible way that either McCain or Hillary can get to the WH. For sure, the ticket would lose the base votes of their respective parties, which they don't have anyway.  They'd hope to draw enuf from the middle of each party to get to the magical 51%. Running against an Obama/Richardson or Obama/Webb ticket, they might pull it off.
if clinton drops out she will more than likely run as an independant and that would mean that obama would never beat mcain because she would easily take away about half of the democrats votes and quite a few republican votes....she might even beat mcain doing it too....
My family will never vote for Obama---and if the democrats terminate this election and crown the racist Obama no Democrat will get a vote for the congress either.I have had it with the Democratic party. They have no idea how to win an election that was handed to them on a silver platter. They have ignored FL and MI at their own peril and now they are thinking of just ending the vote and giving it to Obama---what a bunch of a$$holes. When Obama loses in the general they will probably blame the Clintons.LOL
hillary has a problem telling the truth.hillary supporters are just blind to the fact that she has lost more states than obama .she has used fear to trick people to vote for her.there is no justification for her to get the nomination if he has won more states than her and has a lead in the popular vote .she is tearing the democratic party in half .she lied about ireland she lied about bosnia and she lied when she said she was against nafta she is preparing for another run  in 2012by saying she  passed some fictious commander and chief treshold and mccain passed . she has basically has said that if she aint the nominee vote for mccain.reason for that is she know mccain age will hamper him in 2012 and she might be able to slime her way in back to white house. she knows if barrack wins the general electionshe wont have a chance until 2016. that should be a clear sign that she cares nothing for the democratic party and only has her own intrest at heart.democrats need to stop her now before she does more damage.
Everyone is beginning to see what a joke Hillary (and Bill) are.  What we are seeing now, with all the lies and rule changes, is nothing.  Imagine what it would be like with both of them in the White House!  Obama did not start all this bashing and slaming but one can only take so much then you have to retaliate. The party leaders need to take a big look at what Hillary is doing, for the sake of the party. The voters are seeing the true Hillary now and what she will do to our country.  Obama 08!!!!
The democratic better get their act together and hear Fl. and Michigan, or the democrats will be sorry come November. The dems. better go poll that. I live in fl., and I am a registered democrat and about sick of Howard Dean and This democratic party that does not want to let all the people vote. It was the Republican party in Fl. that changed the date, not the voters. Howard Dean needs to get some balls. I don't care who is on the flippin ticket, I will vote staight Rep. if they don't get this mess straightened out. I know a lot of people who feel the same way and not just in Fl. Also I would never vote for Obama, and don't know anyone voting for him.
WHILE YOU WERE GONE SENATOR OBAMA-

Part of Illinois was underwater.  And I don't scuba diving in the Carribean.  I'm sure those folks in Southern Illinois appreciate the Senator's attentiveness.  Remind anyone out there of a certain President's behavior, during a certain hurricane?

It should be noted Obama is an every man's and woman's candidate.  All the talk about blacks voting in record number to elect a black candidate is ridiculous.  The black vote is historically the most consistent and depended upon voting block in democratic politics.  Blacks, in mass, have voted for every democratic president since being "allowed" to cast a ballot.  Why now are they being treated as though they're hijacking the party from white working class voters?  A black man has as much claim to the success of the party as any of the swing state whites who are up in arms!  Maybe more.
Phil Bredesen, Obama's VP?  One of several good ones, I think. He like so many know it's time for Silly Hillie to throw in the towel and preserve some little bit respect from those of us that are sick of her kind of self-coronation politics.
For the sake of unity in the Dem party, Hillary needs to drop out. She cannot keep changing the rules or making false statements about her political record. Barack has released his taxes back 8 yrs-she has yet to do so. She claimed she ducked from sniper fire (told this story on TWO separate occasions) in Bosnia which never happened. She says she never supported NAFTA in her heart, but all her actions at the time showed strong advocacy and campaigning FOR nafta. I'm tired of this-it is dragging and we need to be focusing on Nov like the Republicans are, not this bickering. Obama '08!
She can send down Ace Smith all she wants, I've decided to support Obama and I know very many people here in Raleigh at least that will too.  We have a lot of educated democrats in the Triangle at least that will pull alot of support for Obama.

NC has very little love for Hillary Clinton because she lacks integrity of character and her campaign has been quite frankly insulting, divisive, nihilistic, and dishonest.   Down with her and dirty politics.
The mere suggestion of Al Gore becoming the democratic nominee for President from the congressman of Florida is ludicrious.  I'll remember what he suggested when it come time for re-election.  Let's pack and move on to November.  Send Hillary home with her family and go on with raising money for our candidate Obama and on to the White House.
All this talk about disenfranchisement if Clinton drops out now is silly.  Those states will still get to vote...just like in nearly every other election when the nomination is decided long before all 50 states vote.  They can vote for Clinton if they want to.  No one is taking away their votes.  Put this in context please.  Disenfranchisement is a very serious thing.  No one wins when you take away its meaning.
I think the party needs to let this ride out until June. They've done enough damage as it is failing to show any true leadership on the Michigan and Florida fiascos (read: Dean and Pelosi should be given marching orders).

The fact that they seem to be leaning toward Obama shows how out of touch they are. Enough people, and rightfully so, believe Obama is too young and too inexperienced to be president at this point in time. This of course is going to push enough conservative and moderate Democrats into McCain's corner. I consider myself a moderate Democrat and will have no problem voting for McCain in November, if Hillary is not ultimately the nominee.

The face that McCain has a good record on the environment, supports stem cell research, has taken a common sense and fair minded approach on immigration, doesn't wear his faith on his sleeve, etc. will all serve him well in November with enough moderate Dems and independents.

The thing is, I like Obama but he really should have waited, finished his first term in the Senate, run for reelection, built up his foreign policy portfolio, and then given it a go in 2016. Hope, change and feel good sentiments are just not enough to cut it in the world we live in.

As harsh as it sounds, superdelegates need to recognize that Obama holds his lead because just enough liberal Democratic activists in overwhelmingly Republican states voted for him. These wins should count for much in determining the nomination because, come November, Obama WILL NOT win all those red states he won during primary season and the way I see it, he struggles against McCain in states like Florida, Ohio, New Jersey and PA.
HP Boston - Why bother to go and vote then?  If the pledged delegates aren't supposed to in "good conscience" support who the people voted for, then why spend the time and money to go vote??  You make no sense.  What would you be saying if all the pledged delegates Hillary won went and voted for Obama?  Would you still agree with it?  Even though I support Obama, I wouldn't.
Hey Nickberry,

Explain just how Hillary is going to win north Carolina when Obama is ahead by 21 points?????
Where are you getting your information from? Hillary-Land?
Obama has won MORE states than Hillary; he has MORE delegates than Hillary; he's AHEAD in popular vote.....AND the higher-ups in HER OWN Party are suggesting she drop out. Hang it up, buddy; it's OVER!
And, do not NOT read these blogs??? How many of us have said we will NOT vote for Hillary now or in 2012? She's a deceitful, polariizing liar and Americans are fed up with "Clinton politics" and will be voting for change.....that, sir, is Barack Obama!
Jane from PA,
First of all, please learn to spell correctly.  Secondly, the general election is  determined by electoral votes, not the primary.  Please stop taking the talking point of  the week from the Clinton camp only to be regurgitated on these posts.  You are only wasting space.
A serious question for all you politicos out there.  Why do the dems. and repubs. have pledged delegates anyway?  Why don't they just have a majority vote like they claim they want in the general?  I have come to understand the need for the electoral college to protect the small states from being ignored.  Can someone please enlighten me.  Thanks
Danno
What message are we sending when a candidate is almost being forced to back off because it might upset the black community?  I find that most disturbingly racist!  Senator Obama has inspired many Americans with his oratory, but where is the evidence that he has "walked the walk"?  I have been a life long Democrat in a area of my state that is conservative Republican, but I am ashamed of what is happening. The presidental election should be about who can best serve the American people and has thoughtful, concrete plans.  We will change, but think about how we want that to happen and for what readons.
If my democratic party had to organize a firing squad they would stand in a circle. Everyone knows that HIllary cannot win unless the superdelagates give it to her. I would like to think that the party would not do something so dumb but you never know. Hillary will not go quietly and it will be ugly no matter when it happens so get it over with so Obama can focus on McCain and Bush. The stink will go away pull the bandage off.
Hey Wil in Tampa Fl. get a grip I live in Florida too-the state new the rules- neither the DNC, nor Barak Obama, nor HC stopped our vote.  The Republican run State of Florida screwed things up like it always does - if you don't vote in November who cares - Dem. votes don't count in Florida - how long have you lived here.  This is redneck country son.
Hillary has shown her true self again. She is willing to lie and   steal the nomination with closed door deal.People wake up and support Obama, are you trying to lose the [cammander-in-cheif] to Mccain??? Nominate Clinton and the party will destroy its-self from within.Go Obama08!!!!!
Hilary needs to move on. Why are we pretending as if she sill has a chance, here? If she did win the nomination it could only be through an unethical process, i.e. Superdelegates voting against their party. And if they want to win this election in Nov., they surely won't do that. It's time for her to bow out gracefully before she causes any more damage.
