Bill: 'Saddle up'

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 1:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
PARKERSBURG, W.V. -- Bill Clinton kicked off a day of campaigning here by making a personal appeal to voters, saying Hillary's success depends on "real" people like those who came to see him. And as the rhetoric heats up between the Democratic campaigns, Bill Clinton offered this message: "Saddle up."

"If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office," he said. "If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office. If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."

Clinton then alluded to the resignations and calls for resignations that have been traded back and forth between the campaigns.

"I don't think any of these people oughta be asked to resign," he said. "All these guys that say bad things about any other campaign, they say, 'Should they resign?' My answer is no; they're repeating party line. They oughta stay right where they are. Let's just saddle up and have an argument. What's the matter with that? That's what America's about, right?"

And while some are "moaning and groaning," he said there are larger issues to gripe about. "None of these politicians are gonna have anything like the tough time half the people in this audience have already had for the last seven years," he said to applause. "This is about you. Don't you let anybody take this election away from you."

This is Clinton's first appearance in West Virginia ahead of the state's May 13 primary. The former president thanked the crowd of about 500 for the state supporting him in his presidential campaigns, and said it's time for the state to return to the Democratic column in November.

"In spite of the best efforts of a lot of the elites in the media and other places it looks like we are gonna have an opportunity for everybody to vote in this primary, and I think your vote should be counted, don't you?" he asked. "I know Hillary's gaining on them when they say, 'Oh, let's shut this down now; we don't want to be divided.

Let's just disenfranchise several of the million people who could vote. Wouldn't you like to vote and have your votes counted? Wouldn't you like to have a voice in this election? Don't you think that your vote should count as much as the people who voted in Iowa first? Yeah, well so does Hillary."

He also said that West Virginia is a "special place," and said it has the kind of profile that bodes well for his wife.

"If it weren't for people like you, she wouldn't be in this race," he said.

From the date of the Iowa caucus, Senator Clinton has not been ahead in this race.  It is not because she is a bad candidate.  It is because Senator Obama is an extraordinary candidate.  Senator Obama is the only candidate running who can actually get healthcare reform passed -- have you heard he will put the healthcare hearings live on C-span and the public will get to have input?  Senator Clinton still has not given us any idea why her new plan would have any better chance than her old plan.  Senator Obama is doing this with our help.  Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States.
"If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office," he said. "If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office. If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."

He is talking to you Obama.Stop crying race every time somebody says something about you. Even better just stop talking.

Clinton 08
You're right Bill...this is about me...GO HOME! I will never vote for Hillary! You both are nothing but liars.
I love the age of the internet, you can spew anything you want and still retain your anonymity.  Let’s face it, the time Hillary Clinton would have exited this race gracefully is long gone. Just think of how fake it would sound if she now says anything good about Obama. John Edwards gracefully and still command a credible status. Even if Hillary quits now, it is just very messy. Of course it gets messier the longer she remains, but remember she does not care. When Obama said that her campaign will say anything to get elected, I thought, well that’s stretching it, but now, geez, he is right again.

For all you Clinton Supporters, let’s recap for just a bit.
1. She announces that she is running for presidency and she is running to win. (At that time she did not need to say at any cost because obviously, it will be smooth sailing for her if people did not questions her integrity).
2. She agrees with the DNC that Michigan and Florida needed to be punished for moving their primaries up and actually signed an agreement with the other candidates declaring not to count in MI or FL delegates. She also agreed not to campaign in those states. (Of course it made sense, she does not need those states if she was ahead and due process must be followed and rules must also be followed.)
3. She arrogantly over spent every other candidate before Iowa caucus and had every confidence that she was going to win because the national poll showed her leading. She comes in third and reality set in for her that the country wanted change. She rode the change theme and got a boost at NH thinking, great we are back in business.
4. She splits Nevada delegates with Obama and confidence continues to ride high, so high that she touted the Michigan primary as a waste of time. Polls shifted and heading into SC, she and Bill reminded us that Obama is black and she is white.
5. That did not work and momentum for Obama took off. She reaches into her purse and loaned her campaign $5 million dollars. Personal credibility becomes issue for her, but she counted on February 5th for Obama to be finished. (Now at this point she starts to think she needs MI and FL only because she scored well in those states. If she had tanked, her original agreement would have remained intact.)
6. She lost 11 states in a row and this was the most credible moment she would have stepped out and retains some respect as a unifying democrat, but instead she declared that the states she had lost so far are not important states in our country and the only important states are those that voted for her. (And by the way, caucuses are not important anymore to her because she had lost a lot of them even though that’s how her husband was able to win the nomination.)
7. Obama remains the front runner and on with the race. Through Ohio Texas and mudsling, she refused to see the bigger picture. Too late, she can’t drop out now, but rather she will watch and help contribute to a characterization of a fellow respected democrat as a racist and an incompetent fool only because it serves her own ambition to become the president. Why? Because we have been supporting her through her dirty tactics. We have not questioned her honesty and we refuse to hold her accountable for her deceit.

To summarize, I believe the only thing important to Hillary Clinton is winning the presidency at any cost. The public is relevant to her only if we believe everything she says, but if we don’t, then we become irrelevant and unimportant as a human beings.
By dragging the primary selection process out beyond the realm of probability the Clintons are taking this election from the Democrats.
Don't you let anybody take the election away from you????

Bill, that is exactly what YOU'RE trying to do.  There is nearly 0% chance that Hillary can come back in either the pledged delegates or popular vote and no chance of coming back in states won, yet YOU and HILLARY think we should all just throw our hands up, say what the hell, and just give Hillary the nomination.

GO AWAY!!! YOU ARE KILLING THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!!!
"Don't you let anybody take this election away from you"

Hmmm. the only person who will take this election away is Tanya Harding and her team, who are working hard to ensure no democrat will get elected.
Since this is the Clinton's stance, please replay her comments of her memory of landing in Bosnia and the video clips of that land EVERYDAY.  To be fair run it the same number of days you all replayed the Wright video.  I'm sure she will not mind "getting beat up."
It is amazing how little vetting was done of Obama. His close relationship with Rev. Wright - and Wright's comments, weren't very hard to find, but it took the media and pundits forever to bring it to national attention. I just hope the Democrats realize that not vetting Obama during the primaries just helps set us up for a candidate that the Republicans can tear apart in the general election.
Hillary Clinton's spokeman, Jamie Rubin, need to see the truth for what it is.  He sees out of rose colored glasses for Clinton and does not speak the truth just like Hillary Clinton.  When asked a question he evades it and brings up Obama with some type of blame to him.
Saddle UP meaning prepare for negative and nasty ? Just when you thought that it could get no lower. The Clintons say prepare for the worst They will do and say anything . Even as far as taking on questions about Barrack Obama's pastor in fron a a news paper group that attempted to link them to a missing person. Just another sign that they are drunk with themselves. They should just go ahead and quit now then switch to the republican party ,for that is who those to devils are doing their bidding for.
Perhaps Bill should've defined what "real" people are. Are those of us who have voted or plan to vote for Obama not "real?"
If Hillary is Tonya Harding, Obama is Louis Farrakhan. Both Obama and Clinton need each other and can't win without each other. 28% Hillary supporters will not vote or vote for McCain. Too bad Obama. Prepare to lose.
Instead of being a 'former president' Bill has reverted to 'Slick Willie'. How much flim flam are we expected to take and stay fooled?
Sure thing, Bill. Let's have some new takes on Monica, Vince Foster, Whitewater, the meaning of "is," Paula Jones, impeachment, Gennifer Flowers, Primary Colors, Linda Tripp, health care debacle. In short, let's replay the greatest hits of the 90's. There's a whole new audience who is just dying to hear every sordid detail of the Clinton saga and how far they've come, but are still just the same plain folks.
President Clinton just called Obama a big wuss. Bill is saying that Obama is not a man. Obama either has to respond, or my guess is he won't do anything. Proving of course that he is a wuss.
I like Bill complaining that anyone running for office should be ready to be attacked, given his whining last year after "those fellas ganged up" on Hillary in a debate. Are there different rules for women running for office when it comes to criticism? As a woman, I should hope not. I mean, what's next? No questioning the integrity of a guy with glasses?
There will be a big article in the Times this week with HIllary.  She is making sure the Wright thing is not going to be put to bed.  Perhaps someone should do an article about HIllary's Nasty Pastorate and see how she would like it.  Like Bill said, if you can't get beat up, get out of the race and stop crying.  You are only hurting yourself.  This is why people don't like you
Sorry to say Bill Clinton is a disgrace to public office.  How can this country think that 4 more years of this person in or around the White House will be good.  He was impeached and that would be enough to embarass most Americans but not him.  Why continue to inflame the party with "Saddle Up"?  Americans want to argue, "Thats what Americans want", instead of maybe a discussion or debate?  Old school politics.  Is there no shame in the Clinton family?

Bob, Chicago
C,Pa
Bravo!  Don't know what part of PA you're in but I used to live in NEPA and I'm guessing that Obama will do better in the state then even his campaign expects.
I wish he'd saddle up and ride off into the sunset along with Hillary.
Real people? So.... Obama (and to be fair, McCain) voters are imaginary?
This is all setting up for Hillary to run as an Independent. If she can't win the Presidency, then neither will Obama. She can then run in 4 years against McCain. Any so called Democratic "Party Elders" better pay attention to what they are doing when they try to get the Clinton's to quit the race.
I agree with Bill. Saddle up, Hillary and ride out of town. We don't want you or the baggage you and your family will bring back into the White House.
When Hillary barely eeks out a victory in Pennsylvania and then loses both North Carolina and Indiana two weeks later, the calls for her to give it up will be a chorus.  At that moment, we will see if the Clintons really are Democrats. Do they call upon all of Hillary's supporters to rally around Democratic nominee Barack Obama, or do they slink off into the dark muttering about how ungateful Democrats stabbed them in the back? I'd lay money on choice #2.
Clinton KNOWS that he and his wife are destroying the Democrats' chances of winning the White House this year. They just don't care, because they'd rather see McCain win. Old Man McCain isn't likely to serve a second term, so Bill & Hill are calculating the Hillary can run again in 2012. But if Obama won, she might have to wait until 2016 because Obama is certainly young enough to run for a second term, and good enough that he'd probably win it. What I think what the important thing that the Clintons haven't factored into their calculations is that they've alienated black voters and other Obama supporters that Hillary won't be able to get nominated for dog catcher in 2016 or any year. And they're doing so much damage now that whatever crazy neocon  McCain chooses as his running mate might even win the presidency in 2016 against a Democratic party enfeebled by the Clinton's vicious tactics.
I'm trying to understand...Why is Bill feeding Hillary's delusions? Well, I can think of a couple of reasons he'd want to do that, neither are in the interest of the Democratic party or the American People.
Thanks Bill for calling things the way they really are...thanks for calling a spade a spade...thanks for putting Obama in his place...a very dark cold place.
Obama has played in the mud wioth the Clinton's long enough.  I think he has addressed all the BS and needs to run his campaign against McCain.  Everytime the Clinton's bring up some BS he needs to address it and just dismiss it as the old kind of politics and move on.  I don't think anymore response than that is needed.  If she makes some outrageous statement let the press eat her up on it.  After the Bosinia delusion I think they are out for her blood.
Well, if saint Obama loses in November to Mccain maybe the liberals will finally wake up to the fact that having 100% of the black vote and 25% of the white vote just won't get you elected.
After Pennsylvannia, Hillary Clinton will be leading in the popular vote. Then what will the Obama-bots say?
Tough talk from the draft dodger, just like from pantywaist cheerleader Bush.  Real people need not proclaim their 'toughness.'

If I was Sen. Obama, I would go on another vacation.  This way the Clintons can continue to overreach and spin(lie) themselves into an eventual self-destruction.  Everyone knew once Sen. Clinton got into a little hot water that she would bring up Rev. Wright so they shouldn't be shocked.  By this time in the campaign we should all know that she will do anything to get elected.  To quote Christopher Hitchens(sp?), "Hillary Clinton will turn into George Wallace if necessary to win the nomination."  I don't even care much for Chris but I think he was right on this one.  Maybe this is what Bubba's talking about when he says "Saddle Up!"
Obama freaks and Hillary fans are both screaming the SAME thing about each other. It is the republican dream. They can just sit back and watch. If Obama wins, and if he cares anything about his party, he must pick Hillary as his running mate. This is the only way the dems can win. Both dem candidates need each other. Sorry Obama supporters...yes you need the Clintons. Otherwise, you lose. Waaayy too many Hillary democrats to ignore folks.
The best thing for the democrats is to fight to the finish.  Let's see who the best candidate is at the end of the game.  We are only in the 3rd quarter.  If she can withstand all that she has and is still fighting, I think it's great for us as democrats.  Go Hillary
If it weren't for "slick & Sybil" we never would have had the disasters of the last eight years. The only reason Gore didn't win in a landslide in 2000 was the shame he brought to the oval office.
So I guess the next time anyone says anything about one of the thousands of scandals surrounding Hillary over her "35-year" fabrication ...er... experience - That is fine and fair game - Right? ...Not, say "Kenneth Starr Tactics"

...Politics as usual from the Clintons.
The Clintons simply think that virtually everyone, but they, are weak-minded fools; as know that ONLY the gullible fall for their tricks and remain supporting them despite enumerable lies and scandals.

I am glad that the Democratic Leadership is organizing and end to the Clinton Charade so that the will of the people as expressed in the Delegate Count, Popular Vote, and number of States won.
The number one reason why I do not want Hillary to win and it's Bill.  I can not fathom the idea of him back in the public eye for 4 years.  Sorry Hillary, but I can not put up with Bill any longer...I'm out!
Saddle up the dead horse you've been beating, Bill.  Hillary's lies and then the covering up of them never cease to amaze me.  Hell, why don't we put Chelsea in the White House?  She has the same "experience" Hillary is claiming - she was even in Bosnia during the imagined sniper fire.  In her defense, maybe she had a dream about the sniper fire since she's under the gun to drop out of the race.
Where are your tax returns, Hillary?
The Clinton campaign is courting Republicans to vote for her to keep her in this race!  Since they don't have to vote in primaries anymore, she'll take thier vote and they'll gladly give it to her.  Because they know that if Obama is nominated he'll win the General Election, but if Hillary is elected McCain'll win...then Hillary can run again in 2012.  That's why Hillary is appearing on Fox News to discuss Rev Wright (an issue she did not comment on until she was caught lying) and why Bill is going on RUSH LIMBAUGH!!!  Wake up people!!! This has to end!!!
Funny how Hill and company accuse Obama of attacking her when they were the one's that threw the first punch.  The way Mark Penn and Wolfson spin stuff they could have gotten OJ off the hook.
Bill, you and your wife are done. You have accomplished what you set out to do and that is get McCain in the WH.I voted for you TWICE, and I will never live that down. I don't think that I am speaking just for myself. GO HILLARY GO and keep going until you are out of sight.Whatever little value you entered this race with has been wasted through foolishness, lies, and a disdain for the Democrats that felt you really were the "read deal". GO HILLARY GO,and keep going until you are out of sight (take Slick Willie with you and paddy,sd,ca) you truly have lowered yourself to paddy's level. Bye Bye.
On your t.v. stations everyone you talk is saying how Hillary is stoping him from the nominee. The way I see it he is stopping the dem party from the white house. Why are your commentators so pro Obama? He seems to be anit-Americian and anti-white. Are you not out raged at his 20 years listening to that stuff? We have little hope for our country if this man wins the nominee. 4 years of the gop should finish us off.
"If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office," he said. "If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office. If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."

Shouldn't that go for his daughter to?

Go Obama!
"If a football player doesn't want to get tackled or want the risk of an a occasional clip he shouldn't put the pads on."  Bill Clinton

Bill, a clip is a penalty, or cheating.  In football, one receives a 15 yard penalty for clipping.  Are you admitting that the Clinton campaign is saying it's o.k. to clip?  Does this go with your Tonya Harding strategy?  A football player knows he may be clipped, but expects the refs to call it when it happens.  Maybe you are just surprised that you've been called for fouls so many times.  So by all means, don't release your tax returns, the donor list to your library, send your wife on cork-screw landing missions under sniper fire that never occur and continue to deflect on Obama's pastor and saying ignorant things like, "Jessie Jackson won South Carolina, too."  God, I wish you would have resigned in 1998.
Giddy Yap!!!

This is one white 46 yr old white woman who's has already voted for Obama and will do so in the General! I wouldn't vote for that sleazeball monster if she were the last candidate on earth (which if she has her way will be scorched!)

Woman for Obama 08
Once again, Billary proves how self-centered he is. They think that the world revolves around them and not the democratic party. They really don't care if the party is torn apart just so satisfy their egos and selfish ambitions. How pathetic.
Our government, and by extension, we, paid a lot of money for Ken Starr to investigate every aspect of the Clinton's lives.  If I remember correctly, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 million.  What did we get for our money, not much.  I don't want to go back to that!  It seemed like a Republican witch hunt, then.  I would like to see a Democrat win the election, but I'm afraid of what the GOP will do when there is finally one candidate on the ballot against them.  Will they be able to completely discredit Obama?
Obama is all talk.  He gives good speeches but that’s it.  We need more than speeches.  His money trail is unknown and he owes those contributors his soul.  The people he owes will be running the country.  Obama is shadier than an oak tree.  This man doesn’t represent anything concrete.  Obama will disgrace this nation amongst all other nations.  His politics are skeptical at best and this man represents disaster for the world and everyone who hasn’t paid for his campaign.
