Obama hits McCain on economics

GREENSBORO, NC -- Playing off Bush's ownership society theme from 2004, Obama said McCain, like Bush, was offering an "on your own" prescription for dealing with a rapidly sinking economy.

"According to John McCain, he said the best for us to address the fact that millions of Americans are losing their homes is to just sit back and watch it happen," Obama said. "In his entire speech yesterday, he offered not one policy, not one idea, not one bit of relief for the nearly 35,000 North Carolinians who were forced to foreclose on their dream in the last few months. Not one, not one single idea or a single policy prescription."

VIDEO: Barack Obama criticizes John McCain's speech on the economy, likening his policy to that of President Bush.

Pointing a finger at the president, Obama said that Bush had led the country down this road in a similar manner for the past eight years.

"It's the idea that the government has no rule at all in solving the challenges facing working families," Obama said. "That all we can do is hand out tax breaks to the wealthiest people and let the chips fall where they may. George Bush called this the ownership society, but he really meant is, 'You’re On Your Own Society.'"

"If you lose your job, you're on your own," Obama chanted. "If you're a child in poverty, pull yourself up by your bootstraps; you're on your own. If you were lured in by deceptive mortgage practices you're on your own."

And hitting McCain again, "John McCain apparently wants to continue this, while the rest of America is struggling with rising tuition, skyrocketing healthcare costs, plant closings, failing schools you're on your own."

The attacks on McCain and Bush were part of an economically themed message at a town hall of about 1,000 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Greensboro.

"The economy is grinding to a halt," Obama said. Earlier he told the crowd that the country was heading towards a recession but ordinary Americans were struggling with the effects of the recession for the past several years.

Obama ticked off the elements of his policy for subprime mortgages and told the crowd that he didnt' believe like John McCain did that "helping struggling homeowners was pandering."

With a nod to the increasingly bitter back and forth between the Obama and Clinton campaigns, Obama said that he wanted to keep the tone of the campaign "respectful" before he reiterated to an old attack on Clinton believing that lobbyists were people too.

This is Obama's first campaign visit after a trip to St. Thomas with his family. When an audience member told Obama that she hoped he enjoyed his vacation, he quickly retorted, "Let me tell you, two and a half days is not a vacation. It's a long weekend, but it's not a vacation."

*** UPDATE *** McCain camp responds:
"Senator Obama's blatant mischaracterizations aren't the new politics he's promised America, they're the old attack and smear tactics that Americans are tired of. Barack Obama's diagnosis for our housing market is clearly that Barack Obama knows best -- raise taxes on hardworking Americans and give government a prescription to spend.

"John McCain has called for an immediate and balanced approach to provide transparency and accountability in an effort to help homeowners who are hurting, while Barack Obama has made a $10 billion election-year promise that is sure to raise taxes and handcuff an already struggling economy."

I wish McCain would stay on foreign policy and national security issues. Its more fun making fun of his gaffes and surprising lack of situational awareness in those issues.

As he himself acknowledged, he doesn't know much about domestic issues, and therefore criticizing him is about as much fun as shooting catfish in a barrel.
Senator Obama better focus on his race with Senator Clinton before she knocks him out the race.
McCain doesn't have any clue on the economy. He is clueless...Perhaps, he should stick with his policy on Iraq.

Welcome back from vacation Mr. President-in-waiting.  We need you!!!
OBAMA focuses on issues.  Real things.  Hillary focuses on delegate games.
A McCain Presidency equals a disaster for the U.S. He's a train wreck "already happening" with regards to the economy AND foreign policy. The choice just becomes clearer and clearer.
OBAMA '08!!!
Obama has done well with the chips falling where they may.  He is a down right success, he AND Michelle with the trickle down effect!  It is amazing how you can get to be a MILLIONAIR if you go to the Wright schools and do the Wright thing, like church on Sunday.  Michelle can be proud of America at last!
1.) He's right; Mccainandunable's solution, as was Bush's, is to give the economy to the rich to rape and plunder, and then blame Bill Clinton somehow when it all goes down the toilet.
2.)But...what's Obama's solution?  Wwhere are HIS policy suggestions?
And what is Obama's solution to our economic problems..oh that's right he needs to wait until Hilliary tells us what she will do as President, then Obama can say "wat she said".  He has no real agenda, he takes what others have already thought of.  He is nothing but a good speaker and nothing else!
What McCain fails to realize or acknowledge is that we can not afford to have the strongest most technologically military in the world if we have a faltering economy. They are directly tied to each other.

In order to be a strong nation, we need a strong economy. The suffering of homeowners across this country demonstrates that Bush's failed policies are not working.
Listening to Obama and McCain talk about the ecomony is like listening to Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

Who do you seriously think will do a better job at handling our $12 trillion economy? Clinton/McCain/or Obama?
It's good at least two of the candidates are focusing on issues. I guess the other one is still dodging sniper fire.
I hate to break it to Mr. Obama, but to most of the working people in the US, 3 days is N Carolina is a vacation, not just a long weekend.  That statement makes him sound a little out of touch with the working class.
Good for Obama. Come back refreshed, and ready to discuss what really matters to the Dems: pressing issues such as the economy, and McCain.  (Only outcome in that world: a blown-apart party and a Republican president)>

Hope his strategy is two-pronged: One to attack Clinton, who is obviously going dirty (See "Saddle Up") instead of focusing on issues and unity; and the other to continue talking issues and McCain.

Go Obama! Refreshing.
so while i agree that the democratic race has been hugely polarizing, is there really a clinton supporter or obama supporter who will vote for mccain over the democratic nominee? wll ohio vote for mccain because they preferred hillary over obama and she lost? if that's the case, fine. but in four years, i don't want to hear any unemployed, former-home owner from rural ohio complaining about their plight in life. ohio put bush in the white house twice and now its residents are shocked that the country has gone to hell. so if you vote for mccain to "punish" obama, the only person you're hurting is yourself.
It is already clear that Obama will very likely beat McCain, if he becomes the Dem candidate.  That's why Republicans have been voting for Hillary in the open primaries in huge numbers.
And what is Barack's Plan? Nothing! You people need to wake up! You do not elect a president on speeches! Obama has no track record of any accomplishments! Hillary and McCain do!
This country has been set up for failure over the last 8 to 12 years. Obama, McCain, Clinton, none of them have anything stimulating to say, and even if they did we would need an insightful and educated voting population that isnt basing their decisions on race and/or gender to cast their votes. America, and its position in the world is moving to another place in line. Where are the great American hero's? I feel so sorry for our kids.
um. don't be under the illusion that by reading a firstread post, you're reading Obama's policy proposals. if you really wanted to do that you'd go to barackobama.com, and you'd see all of his proposals on the first page, readily available, or if you wanted to see the actual proposals he made today, you'd tune in to CNN or MSNBC. really, you expected to see a policy proposal analysis on firstread? i'm not sure between you and mcbush, who needs a you-know-what.
I wish that the American people would realize Barack Obama is just like many of us, Think about it.  How many of us are going to earn 5 million dollars in our lifetime let alone would be able to lean ourselves that amount of money. I have had the opportunity to talk to BO and he is an amazing, down-to-earth type of guy.  We need this is a President.  Bush tries to be this guy and we laugh.  I believe, deep down inside we all admire Barack.  And those of us who don't, believe in a house divided.  I wouldn't even let my children hear soundbytes of Billary Clinton.  That's not what my house stands for.

Pulling for Barack! 08' 12'
I am soooo old that I remember the debate between Nixon and Kennedy.  Nixon looked old, haggard, pale, defensive and under the gun. Kennedy looked vibrant, young, relaxed, healthy.  Have any of you looked at Hillary lately?  She looks old, haggard pale, defensive and under the gun.  Obama back from laying on a beach for a couple of days, vibrant, young, relaxed and newly inspired.  Hmmmm  Hope he challenges her to a debate in Pennsylvania.
Obama supporter
the clintons have turned this election cycle in to a three ring circus, bill and hillary encapsulate everything that is wrong with american politics all the while screaming change, clinton and mccain are cast from the 'business as usual mold', both of them are nothing more than figure heads for the corporate trash that owns washington, and they are being force fed to the american people, their agendas are one in the same, to carry on the wealthy elitist plan to have a 2 class america where a handful of people posses all the riches, and the masses are nothing more than destitute slaves.
As a U.S. taxpayer, I'm much more in favor of McCain's solution than Obama's...  I've only been out of school for four years, am still single, and only make $45K a year.  That salary might be fine for someone living in Des Moines, but for Chicago it's pretty tight... Therefore, I live on a tight budget and don't have a house because I understand that I CANNOT afford one.  (It's budget 101).  I think that it's unfair to me to have to subsidize (with MY tax money) irresponsible people who decided to buy $300K houses with no money down despite the fact that they make the same or less than I do.
look, americans are lazy voters. we care more about rev. wright and sniper fire than we do about the issues. the people on this board are into politics far more than 95% of the country. the majority pick a president based on real important things like "well, he seems like a christian" or "i can relate to him" or "she's been through tough times herself." it really has nothing to do with policy.

Barb, Cleveland, OH (Sent Wednesday, March 26, 2008 2:48 PM)

Well Barb, most people in working class America still have days off every now and then, Obama really hasn't.  He has probably had about 10 days OFF in a year, he campaigns on weekends too.  You comment makes it look like you are looking for the negative ni everything about him.
Like Obama knows anything about the economy, or anything else for that matter. Notice that Obama only is critical of what others think and say. That's because his only "plan" is "Hope", "Unity", and "Change", none of which put dinner on the table. The man is a fraud.
Imagine if all the billions of our tax dollars that went to the Iraq war went to, oh I dunno, helping us, instead of killing people on the other side of the planet - IMAGINE. Around Detroit its very obvious. I read here two days ago that we are spending 24 million a week to employ iraqi police. Why dont we spend money to employ our own people, fix our own country, spread our own democracy so that we can all enjoy it instead of just the wealthy?

Oh because they call the shots and they would rather our tax dollars go straight into their pockets to buy bombs and tanks from them for a war they are purposely growing for their own private benefit.
I take it that some of you idiots criticizing Obama have a computer or you wouldn't be posting on this thread. USE IT! My 6 year old could go to Obama's Official Website or simply type in Obama's Economic Plan in Goggle to find specific economic ideas that Obama has formulated and proposed. But naturally those who are asking where are Obama's economic  suggestions are just on here to criticize Obama without doing any actual research to see what his plans are. Just proves they are idiots and explains why they are backing either Hillary or McCain.
mccain looks like a hospitial patient being led around everywhere he doesnt know where hes at, where hes going, or what he doing. he just seems well "proped up".
Obama is all talk.  He gives good speeches but that’s it.  We need more than speeches.  His money trail is unknown and he owes those contributors his soul.  The people he owes will be running the country.  Obama is shadier than an oak tree.  This man doesn’t represent anything concrete.  Obama will disgrace this nation amongst all other nations.  His politics are skeptical at best and this man represents disaster for the world and everyone who hasn’t paid for his campaign.
Obama will crush McCain in the general election. You heard it here first. CRUSH!!!!!!!!!
Over 4000 of our americans killed in Irag!  For what?  The only people making a killing in this country are those associated with the oil industry and halliburton.  Oboma wants us out of Iraq! Let's please bring everyone home and concentrate on strengthening our borders, our economy, and infrastructure.  We need to concentrate on making america strong again!
Again a big speach with no substance.Whats your stance Obama?Your gonna pay everything off for us?I dont know about anyone else but,I pay enough taxes now.Get real!!!
Roger, Chicago / unfortunately I have to agree with your pessimistic few of our future, when bill clinton signed nafta into law it was the beginning of the end for working america, and I don't think all the kings horses and all the kings men are going to be able to stop what is coming, sad but all to true
I don't think Obama will be a president-in-waiting but he is a president-in-loosing. Bush was supporting him when he said: "Senator Obama better focus on his race with Senator Clinton before she knocks him out the race." Actually, his pastor knocked him out already!
Welcome back Obama.

Hill missed you. She had a hard week while you were gone and its going to get WORSE
Supers are coming out. Another one in Ill today

I cant wait for Pelosi, Gore, Carter, Edwards and Biden to stick it in her fat rump
I like reading these things. The one about "welcome back from vacation Mr. President..." How appropriate. And the one about "if you go to the Wright schools and do the Wright thing, like church on Sunday."

THIS IS THE BEST GAME IN TOWN!! Better than supper bowl.
Who was helping who get around yesterday? Nancy Reagan or John McCain.
I have to look no further than how Obama has managed his campaign finances superbly to know he will do everything in his power to put this country's economy back on track. Obama is going to make a wonderful President!  I'm still wondering why I follow the rules of the blog, write comments on the actual topic, use appropriate language, and do not attack others comments - yet my posts never show up.  What's up with that MSNBC? From reading the posts here, you don't even follow your own rules.
How funny will it be to watch white America crumble to its knees from the petty, classless and uninformed choices that they choose to be their leaders.  They talk, talk and talk while getting richer and you pawns are cutting yards and delivering pizza because the Repulican trickle down theory didn't apply to your company or many others like it in America.  Get your kids enrolled in Chinese classes quick.  They'll have to speak it to apply for a job if McCain is President.
There are things that are really important in people's life,it,s inconceivable that you happen to forget them.Diving for snipper,s bullets is a big gaff
when in reallity it never happen.Come on Hyllary,be real.
And just who will pay for this mortgage bailout? Who will pay for all of Obama's bailouts? The US is how far in debt? Im sorry but if a Bank wants to take a chance on someone they know can't pay, and if someone buys a house that they can't afford, then they both deserve what they get. Obama makes a great speech unfortunately there is nothing to back it up, He only had a few years in the senate and what did he do? Nothing much of anything. How can Americans follow someone's words blindly with nothing to back it up? Taking a chance on someone to run this country with no service other than a few years is too big a risk. Just because someone says that they will make changes doesn't mean that they can
Spoken like a typical Democrat. Don't worry about a thing, we will take care of you. Don't take responsibility for your actions. Join the welfare ranks, so I can count on your votes forever...
What a freakin' joke. The Dem's are already removing tax breaks from all Americans. Not just the upper bracket. The tax breaks from President Bush covered all of us, not anymore. Thanks you two-timing double-speaking liberals.
And for all the unresponsible, greedy, numbnuts that signed mortgages that you could not afford. THANK YOU! Your making for a great buyers market. And those of us that can manage our money are looking to cash in on your stupidity.
Obama's economic plans and ideas are all posted and open for anyone to read on his website.  In fact many of clintons plans came out after his. Want some more facts.

1. Clinton can't win without steeling the elction.
2. Obama makes mistakes, and admits them.
3. McCain's ideas today do not match up with his ideas eight years ago.

Sometimes I find myself becoming angry when I read some of the comments people post becaouse it shows me just how quick people will voice opinions and how slow they are to pay attention to facts. The FL and MI thing is a huge example.  I have heard so many people say it is Obama who is keeping their votes from counting.  These people don't pay attention to detail.  Clinton and Obama were on the same page with FL and MI untill Clinton started loosing, then suddenly she cares about seating their delagates. Hmm.. isn't that interesting.   Is Obama perfect? Nope.  Does he lie? Yup, he did about Wright.  But he also had the nuggets (excuse my sexest analogy) to stand up and admit he lied. Clinton must have PTSD from all that sniper fire that never happened. Come on, you were caught, admit it.  Only your blind supports are actually going to beleive you misspoke and don't clearly remember events.  How do you forget sniper fire?

I really don't understand it.  I think it is great to be involved, take a stand and back it up.  But please back it up with facts.  You all look really silly.  And no this doesn't go for just Clinton supports.  There are a lot of blind Obama followers to.  Don't be that person.  Please, for yourself.
If you guys think bring are troops home right away and just leaving Iraq like it is we will be in deep trouble her in the US. That is the worst thing we could do.

Go McCain
We have to look again to who is in Obama's employ on this campaign!

Jeffery Liebman, one of the architects of the 2005 BUSH attempt to privatize social security is on Obama's campaign, and has the door wide open for him, thanks to Obama's "everything is still on the table" rhetoric. Nevermind Obama, his handlers are the real question - don't be fooled!

Next we've got David Cutler, a Harvard economist, whose ideas on improving health care in this country include more financial incentives to the pharmaceutical industry, again, a right wing policy wrapped in Obama's personality cult.

And perhaps worst of all, Obama's economic guru is Austan Goolsbee, a Yale class of '91 Skull-and-Bonesman and Chicago School economist, who advised Obama not to back a much needed freeze on foreclosures to help homeowners, and had the audacity (not of hope) to cite the "moral hazard" involved in backing consumers against banks.

Obama voters, this is lunacy - you must see past the messianic veil Obama has shrouded himself in to see what he's really about!
Brillaint speech and use of so-called buzz words. "On your own" is a great phrase to counter Bush's failed policies. Definitely Obama should focus on economy, it matters to everyone. To keep the Repub base, McCain has to stick to Bush's policies, the same ones that can be blamed for a recession and high oil prices.
I like the Barry Obama plan...tax the rich and create a nanny state for the rest of us...oh wait, too late, they already tried that, the rich send their money somewhere else and white middle america pays the bills instead..no thanks barry
Barack is on the right message. Both Hillary and Barack are clear about their message: that the direction of the GOP is not the direction that will bring this country around. Democrats who are willing to vote for John McCain will make the same mistake they made voting for G.B. because they "felt so good" about him and found Al Gore too stuffy or whatever. If this election is lost to John McCain it will be by Democrats who have no understanding that the election is about a direction and not about "feeling good." I will vote for either Democratic candidate who gets the nomination. I have long ago put aside my "feelings" when my "favorite" bowed out. This election cannot be about a "personality" be it Barack or Hillary. It must be clearly about a national direction and I hope that we can get back to educating the electorate on that very stark reality that John McCain and the Republican direction is not the way to go.
