Obama hits McCain on economics

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 2:33 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
GREENSBORO, NC -- Playing off Bush's ownership society theme from 2004, Obama said McCain, like Bush, was offering an "on your own" prescription for dealing with a rapidly sinking economy.

"According to John McCain, he said the best for us to address the fact that millions of Americans are losing their homes is to just sit back and watch it happen," Obama said. "In his entire speech yesterday, he offered not one policy, not one idea, not one bit of relief for the nearly 35,000 North Carolinians who were forced to foreclose on their dream in the last few months. Not one, not one single idea or a single policy prescription."

VIDEO: Barack Obama criticizes John McCain's speech on the economy, likening his policy to that of President Bush.

Pointing a finger at the president, Obama said that Bush had led the country down this road in a similar manner for the past eight years.

"It's the idea that the government has no rule at all in solving the challenges facing working families," Obama said. "That all we can do is hand out tax breaks to the wealthiest people and let the chips fall where they may. George Bush called this the ownership society, but he really meant is, 'You’re On Your Own Society.'"

"If you lose your job, you're on your own," Obama chanted. "If you're a child in poverty, pull yourself up by your bootstraps; you're on your own. If you were lured in by deceptive mortgage practices you're on your own."

And hitting McCain again, "John McCain apparently wants to continue this, while the rest of America is struggling with rising tuition, skyrocketing healthcare costs, plant closings, failing schools you're on your own."

The attacks on McCain and Bush were part of an economically themed message at a town hall of about 1,000 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Greensboro.

"The economy is grinding to a halt," Obama said. Earlier he told the crowd that the country was heading towards a recession but ordinary Americans were struggling with the effects of the recession for the past several years.

Obama ticked off the elements of his policy for subprime mortgages and told the crowd that he didnt' believe like John McCain did that "helping struggling homeowners was pandering."

With a nod to the increasingly bitter back and forth between the Obama and Clinton campaigns, Obama said that he wanted to keep the tone of the campaign "respectful" before he reiterated to an old attack on Clinton believing that lobbyists were people too.

This is Obama's first campaign visit after a trip to St. Thomas with his family. When an audience member told Obama that she hoped he enjoyed his vacation, he quickly retorted, "Let me tell you, two and a half days is not a vacation. It's a long weekend, but it's not a vacation."

*** UPDATE *** McCain camp responds:
"Senator Obama's blatant mischaracterizations aren't the new politics he's promised America, they're the old attack and smear tactics that Americans are tired of. Barack Obama's diagnosis for our housing market is clearly that Barack Obama knows best -- raise taxes on hardworking Americans and give government a prescription to spend.

"John McCain has called for an immediate and balanced approach to provide transparency and accountability in an effort to help homeowners who are hurting, while Barack Obama has made a $10 billion election-year promise that is sure to raise taxes and handcuff an already struggling economy."

This is too easy...mcshame has no economic plan...imagine his surprise when told that not all of us are wards of the state like he is or have a wife that makes a mint as chairwoman of one of the largest beer distributors in the country...when do we get to peek at their tax returns by the way?
EXACTLY Lin Lo...it does seem sometimes when you write something of substance...it rarely shows.  I AGREE... let's just compare the dem candidates in HOW they've managed their campaign finances. We ALL know how that has gone.
McCain being strong on security is a legend... He does not understand that it is our being in Iraq that attracts terrorists there. The longer we stay, the better off they are, they sure don't want us to leave, kind of agree with him here.
McCain & Clinton scare me with the same tried and failed methods of politics.  If Obama brings nothing else he brings something new, and perhaps different will work when the same old policies and attitudes have failed.
Be careful what you wish for.  Obama and Clinton are not really Democrats; they are Socialists.
In the Clintonian way of government, you throw in the kitchen sink and forget about the issues. I am so glad that Obama is speaking on issues that Americans care about instead of the attacks by the Clinton's. You the man Obama!
In order to remain a strong nation, we need a strong economy. The suffering of homeowners across this country demonstrates that Bush's failed policies are not working.  His father's presidency left us in a similiar pickle 15 years ago.  This is all so crazy to me.  I could not believe that he (Bush) even got into office in the first place let alone be re-elected.  How much more can the 98% give to the betterment of the 2% before we all fall down.  Stay tune!
why should we be rewarding bad behavior.  what are we doing for the people that are paying their mortgage on time, and taking responsibilty for themselves?

oh and ps, i would rather be fighting terrorism in a foreign country then in my own!
The point is for Obama to appear ready, willing, and able to take on McCain directly; it sets up a dialog and relegates the Clinton camp to a visibly second-tier concern (which it is, after all).

McCain's tried, true, and tired GOP accusations of tax-and-spend liberalism will go nowhere; not with the product of 8 years of mismanagement by the very party he would have us believe is the solution.

The end is nigh.

P.S. Check out PBS's Frontline: 'Bush's War'. Staggering.
you people are so ugly!  It would really be nice to hear something constructive and helpful for our country instead of trying to stick it to everyone.  We ended up with them as nominees and we did it so do something good or say something decent or go read a book.
Way to go.
So glad First Read decided to focus on something issue-related.
And so glad Obama is focusing on the needs of Americans and not like the three-ring Hillary-Bill-Chelsea smear circus.
I know from doing my own research and from attending Obama's town hall mtg on the economy in my own town that his plans and grasp of the issues are excellent.
McCain is old, feeble and lacking many brain cells.  When the phone rings at 3:00 AM he doesn't get it because he REALLY needs his rest.  We desperately need someone with a working mind, not knee jerk Republican answers.  That's why we're in so much trouble now.
It is said by the Clinton Campaign and followers that if Hillary does not get the election then her supporters will vote Republican to vote for Sen McCain.  This is a ill reflection of Sen Clinton supporters and followers.  Clinton supporters are no gracious losers by far and this is a total shame to the party.  This is becoming a very sad year in politics and this will all be labled to Sen Clinton.  If you lose you lose gracefully and support the home team.  No one likes to lose  but in every competition there is a loser and the loser bows out gracefully and supports the winner if in the same division of sports competition.  We all know that Sen CLinton and Sen Obama are pretty much similar in their views and points with some slight differences so if you are supporting what Sen Clinton stands for why wouldn't one want to support those similar in views.  One would actually want to hurt the country by putting in a man who stands for 100 year war, admittedly tells the country his economic portfolio lacks knowledge, supports the Bush Administration, It is obvious that Clinton followers only have themselves in mind which is a true reflection of Sen Clinton.  However, I am 100% positive that is Sen Clinton won the nominee Sen Obama would congratulate and support the Democratic party.  Sen Obama is a World Class Gentleman and is a role model for all me to immulate.
Funny, I can post to the Washington Post and see my comments in seconds posted.  I post here and it never gets posted.  Perhaps you should check with the Post and get your internal communications updated.  Just an idea.
These comments are proof enough for me that this country is full of angry, nasty people. Go on... vote for Clinton, cheer when she gets the nomination and then wonder what on earth happened when McCain becomes president and you spend the next 4 years in a worse state then you are now. Republicans despise the Clintons. Independents despise the Clintons. The black community will not vote for Clinton. All the new voters that have been working hard for Obama won't vote for Clinton. I won't vote for Clinton. She may steal the nomination but she will be trashed in the general election. Some of you democrats are reading all this trashing of Obama on these blogs but do you really know who it is that are writing them.  Maybe it's the republicans that can't wait to bring out all the old Clinton baggage that they have been keeping stored up for the past 8 years.  Some of you are so blind. Go on.... throw away your one chance at a better life.  I will be the first to tell you " I told you so".
Before his first run for President, Bush told Rice and others that he didn't "do" foreign relations.  Y' see where we are now, don't you?  Now, the doddering McCain says, basicaly, he doesn't "do" econ. 101.
Anyone else even slightly alarmed at the possible outcome?
First, are republicans really going to vote for McCain? How far has expectations for that party dropped? Now, the real issue.  For all the Hillary supporters that are bashing Barack, contemplate what you are doing.  I am an Obama supporter, but if somehow Hillary were to end up with the nomination (as shady as that would be) I would cast my vote for her.  This party needs to come together or suffer 4 more years of American destruction. Not just financially, but globally as well.  We are in a war, killing thousands of kids, not just ours, but theirs, for what reason?  Please explain to me why we are there again? WMD's?  Yes, that was it.  Or wait, was it?  Who cares, right Cheney?  Seriously, if you are a democrat, it is time to fix this.  Can Barack fix everything, absolutely not, can Hillary?  Not a chance.  There has been so much damage done, the next President is buried.  So you really take your chance on any of them.  Do you take McCain, that wants to keep waging a 5 year old war that has done nothing but kill our kids, friends, spouses?  Or do we unite behind a democratic candidate, Barack or Hillary, and bring our troops home?  It seems to me that we have all forgotten them.  It is so much about an economy that any second year econ student could have figured was going to crash, and less about our own people, dying without cause, but dying because they are patriots.  I want Barack Obama to be my next president, but more than that, I DO NOT want John McCain.  Lets unite, please, for our kids.
Please, Please, Please, I am sooo tired of hearing about the Corp. elite and how they keep the working man down. 80% of businesses in America are small businesses. Obama, Clinton AND McCain need to keep their hands off the economy. Has the government EVER fixed or improved ANYTHING! Ronald Reagan said "the 9 most frightening words in the english language are - I'm from the government and I'm here to help." Wake-up you whiney entitlement babies and go to work! EVERYTHING the government does for you will ruin your opportunities to succeed. Everyone that gets sucked-in by their rhetoric is selectively stupid...
David, San Francisco, you moron:

George Bush did not attempt to privatize Social Security.  You are a liar if you say so, or possibly just incredibly misinformed and stupid.

Mr Obama has said he would consider the avalable data in deciding whether to go to war.  I'm not his optometrist but those in position to vote at the time voted to take those steps.  He of course wasn't there to commit this terrible blunder and of course staying true to his leftist roots now proclaims, he's too smart for that.  He's also told us to not be afraid to discuss race, he's too black for that.  He's also told us not to cast aspersions, he's too good for that.  He also points to the financial embroilments of others, he's too clean for that.  NOTICE ANYTHING ? ... how these little rhymes sound nice to the ear ... imagine an engaging smile too ... You're not falling for that, are you ?   The last pluperfect leader that was going to clean up everything is named Eliot Spitzer.  We've already startde seeing BO's real underpinnings, how he caters and smiles to get what he wants - there's a nouveau politician !!  Like Spitzer be careful, none of us lives in a glass house.

Sorry to hear your vacation was too short BO, maybe you should take a longer one ??  But no, you're too dediacted for that.

Obama has the audacity to knock McCain??????????????

Please, all you Obama supporters out there --
dont let him make fools out of you any more.

Obama should first straighten out the issues of his charming reverend, and his wonderful business parter, Rezko.  Then he can tell us about the economy and what great ideas he has.

Oh and, as far as Clinton is concerned, at least she was in Bosnia---Obama would love to be able to say that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a U.S. taxpayer, I'm much more in favor of McCain's solution than Obama's...  I've only been out of school for four years, am still single, and only make $45K a year.  That salary might be fine for someone living in Des Moines, but for Chicago it's pretty tight... Therefore, I live on a tight budget and don't have a house because I understand that I CANNOT afford one.  (It's budget 101).  I think that it's unfair to me to have to subsidize (with MY tax money) irresponsible people who decided to buy $300K houses with no money down despite the fact that they make the same or less than I do. Illinidiva , Chicago, IL

Most Americans who are losing their homes, are not the $300k crowd, but the families that live lean and put their faith in the idea that the American Dream was possible for them too - house payments that would be in line with typical rental units in their areas.

It is a problem that lenders and their surrogates could create products with hidden costs, fees, and interest rate hikes, hidden penalties for paying back a mortgage early (that meant the lender would not otherwise recoup investments in the higher interest rate earnings) that has created this escalating problem.

The industry was supposed to be regulated by government agencies already - the lack of follow through on the use of our tax dollars is one category that should be dealt with. We already pay for subprime mortgage gaurantees through government agencies. Lenders and underwriters should not have been so greedy that they would take the country down to earn a few extra bucks through an increasing use of subprime mortage programs, often used for people w who were elegible for standard fixed rate mortgages.

(Please post - I have submitted several times and have yet to be posted.)
Obama will turn the United States into a divided Socialist State. People will try their best to hide their income anywhere and anyway they can.  Corporations will run so fast for the border they will knock down all the illegals that are running in to get amnesty.  When all the people creating jobs are gone we are going to be in one big mess. Oh, and maybe we will all have to move to Mother Africa so we can take advantage of all the money that is being thrown their way. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Alex, from Atlanta I agree with your post.  Since when is it my responsibility to bail you out of a mortgage that you shouldn't have gotten in the first place or that you cannot afford.  If you are paying the minimum on your credit card each month and just getting by, that should clue you in that you can't afford to buy a house.
Few months ago McCain candidacy was like a broken shallow and all of a sudden republicans are embracing him in a desperate .McCain flip-flopped in many issues like immigration, tax cut, domestic spending and varieties of issues and thus differ from conservative republicans significantly and now the core republicans abandoned their party loyalties and values to their ambitions and greed for white house and siding with him. Have we ever thought the reason of his surge in Republican primary?

Because they knew very well that if Hillary is the nominee then many voters like independents, some democrat who does not personally like Hillary will be leaning towards McCain and if Barack Obama is the nominee, Barack will single handedly defeat theirs but they are in belief that may be McCain will be little better contender than any other republican candidate. Because of a democrat like Joe Lieberman who also for war and biased with foreign policy and mostly sided with foreign agendas than domestic issues and his endorsement can not validated McCain’s  candidacy to us.
But make no mistake; McCain will be the other side if the coin of Bush-Cheney doctrine .he will bring more war to come which will cost us trillions of dollars from our domestic agendas. Also do not discount the age factor and because of the age, he will have to depend more than anyone else to his cabinets because of his age factor.
So we as a democrat and as an independent, we should not be considering McCain as our alternate but what we should do is carry Obama’s message of hope, change and a dream of better future and spread it to all the corner of the country and at the end we should be able to rally as a uniform and united democrat behind who ever is our nominee.
John McCain has no plan to rebuild our ailing economy and he said “I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated” What a joke! We are sending some one who has no knowledge about struggled economy and who will promote our country by military and foreign policy. We should not forget that our investment on decades of old foreign policy is one of the main reasons for all this mess for many years. We are abandoning our domestics’ agendas over our greed to foreign occupation and we are empting out our national resources to preserve other nation’s interest. McCain is a big part of our failed foreign policy and all their disaster happened due to that is part of his problem.
Mccain change his position more than the wind change its course in a minute.Few months ago he said that our state of the economy is strong and we are at our best in economy and health care in the world.Last night he said that we are facing a tough time and our economy is suffering at worst but failed to deliver any policy or solution to salvage our nation's ailing economy.
Is not that great that we are prefering some one who prefers war over fixing our economy.Mccain wants to spend 12 billions dollars a month for next 100 years and decline to fix our housing mess. he declines to pay any attention to fix health care and he does not want to improve our education system.
What plans or substances he has in his speeches other than empty rehtoric of war mongering.
Hey Todd, so Obama has sold his soul to his contributors and that the people he owes will be running this country?  Oh, God, I hope so.  The average Obama contribution is $109.00 - from people like me, a single woman living on the underpaid salaray of a public school teacher.  Obama's contributors are the people, the little people.
This site has yet to post one single comment I've made, but I keep on trying.  "If you were lured in by deceptive mortgage practices you're on your own." How amazingly AUDACIOUS. How about those "deceptive mortgage practices" practiced by the good senator himself in Chicago? See the article "Follow the Money" by Lin Farley on the Savage Politics web site. Open your eyes, people - this candidate has a closet of skeletons as big as Clinton's! Al Gore, where are you???
Anyone can be... Obama became a millionaire when he wrote two best selling books.  If you actually look at his tax returns that is very obvious.

Also, Obama wrote a letter to the chairman of the Fed and the Secretary of the Treasury a year ago asking them to address the issue of sub-prime loans and home foreclosures before it became a crisis.  It was a very detailed letter about what he saw as the issues and suggestions on how to address them.  I think the fact that he could see this coming and tried to head it off at the pass is very astute and commendable.  I want a president who will recognize that something is going to be a problem and deal with it before it gets this bad.  I didn't see it coming, did you?

David of San Francisco, one intelligent post here. You are right, voters need to look at Obama's campaign advisors, especially David Axelrod his manager, Ms. Pritzker his Finance Manager who was a CEO of Superior Bank in Chicago, a bank involved in the Savings and Loan scandals. Obama's economic advisors believe in the Bush strategies. Look where our economy is because of Republicans. Don't be fooled by Obama's aura of everything will be all right if we just get along, that's what Bush told us too.
Obama people keep saying research his site to see his plans, well have any of you researched Hillary's site to see her detailed point by point plans for all our issues? www.hillaryclinton.com
there are people that seem to want to rewrite history. obama is the candidate that has benifited from crossover republican and independent votes.,, because they knew just as any objective observer knows now that obama is flawed and cannot win in the general. but then again clinton probably couldn't either. the progressive democtatic wing has once again handed the republicans the country. they may even lose the congress with these two. with a field of at least seven legitimate candidates, dems picked the only two that will lose. soo, they lose the nation but vote their ideals.yea for them. I needed healthcare, i needed bankruptcy reform of bush's bankruptcy reform, i needed relief from crushing gas prices,i needed protection from multinational corporations that have pillaged the American middle class, i needed my two nephews out of iraq yesterday..... but at least the president will not be gw bush any longer and that is some comfort....millions of democrats will switch affliations if obama is the nominee. the latest polls show up to 30% that will not pull the lever for him. republicans know this... too bad the dems didn't.
Who do you seriously think will do a better job at handling our $12 trillion economy? Clinton/McCain/or Obama?

After watching Team Clinton mismanage its finances during these primaries it certainly won't be Hillary.
I would prefer Socialism to the Plutocracy Bush has been pushing.
