NH reaction; GOP strategy v. Clinton

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 3:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
A couple of other items from today...

Bill Clinton's comments that Democrats “let New Hampshire go out of turn,” and that they have a Democratic Secretary of State, is causing a mini stir in the Granite State.

The New Hampshire Union Leader: "Former New Hampshire Democratic Chairman Kathy Sullivan, a state Clinton campaign co-chair, said she believed that Bill Clinton was criticizing the DNC in his remarks, not New Hampshire.

"But the former president also appeared to imply in his statement that the DNC allowed the New Hampshire primary to be held earlier than scheduled in the DNC rules because Secretary of State Bill Gardner, who set the date of the New Hampshire primary as set out by state law, is a Democrat.

"Sullivan said Bill Clinton was mistaken to suggest that Gardner's party affiliation was in any way related to New Hampshire receiving a waiver from the DNC.

"Clinton campaign spokesman Kathleen Strand said, 'Hillary and Bill Clinton have been staunch and ardent supporters' of the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire. 'That's indisputable.'

"She said the former president was not criticizing New Hampshire, but instead saying that 'just as New Hampshire voters had a voice, Michigan and Florida votes should have a voice' and that 'Obama should know better than anyone in this campaign that the campaign is not over until the last vote is counted. New Hampshire made that point to him pretty clearly.'"

This article from Salon is an interesting read. It lays out what the Republican strategy would be for a Nominee Clinton:

"Though many Democrats like and respect Clinton as a role model, an effective legislator and a fighter against a relentless GOP onslaught, the image Republicans would want in voters' minds this fall if she wins the nomination is far more sinister. They'll say Clinton will do or say anything to win, and that she can't be trusted (also, she'll raise your taxes). McCain's campaign will call her a liberal and paint her support for ending the war in Iraq as a surrender to terrorists (the same strategy they'd use against Obama). Clinton's problem is that many voters already see her in a negative light; there isn't much work Republicans would have to do to put her there.

"Ironically, that might make Clinton immune to dirty tricks like the ones the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth pulled on John Kerry (or like the mud the GOP is already planning to throw about Obama's minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright). This is, after all, a candidate whose billing records as a private lawyer in Arkansas in the 1980s, the infamous lost-and-then-found Rose records, were subpoenaed, examined and even dusted for fingerprints by Republican investigators in Congress over a decade ago. When Clinton ran for reelection to her Senate seat two years ago, even the sleaziest GOP operatives basically left her alone, allowing her to cruise to victory without coming under heavy fire. But there isn't much out there voters haven't already heard about Clinton, or her husband; why bother trying to fight the battles over the White House travel office again?

More: "The other line of attack Clinton faces if she does wrest the nomination from Obama is over how she does it. Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams called it "stealing" the nomination, and he'd be happy to tell voters all about the process that put Clinton over the top. "If she wins, it's because these non-elected delegates are going to be countering what happened in primaries and caucuses around the nation," he said. "I think that would be very divisive for them." Other Republicans say polls show independents don't like the thought of superdelegates picking a nominee who trailed in the elected delegate count. "The party that created the whole open primary system and ended the deals behind closed doors and smoke-filled rooms is the one that's kind of relying on that after all," Bolger said.

But the piece ends this way: "If Clinton does pull off yet another family comeback, in a political career already dotted with them, her message to Republicans may well be (to quote a figure from a different political dynasty), 'Bring it on.'"

The Democratic Party leaders have made it clear that it's over in June. If the Clintons are still behind in delegates and popular vote, they will not be allowed to dicker over super-delegates until the Convention in August.  The message has been delivered to Bill now and I believe that the Clintons are receiving better treatment that any other candidate in the same predicament would receive.
Here we go again.....This is what Bill said, no, wait, this is really what Bill meant....no wait, this is what he said, but he was implying this. It's getting old, Bill.
hillary rodham clinton signed the pledge eliminating flordia and michigan from the nomination process, why don't you post a copy of the document, go ahead and highlight the hillarys name, the clintons are a disgusting duo
Some of you Clinton supporters are so enraged and blind.  like a hurt animal, you aren't even listening or reading correctly.

You blame Obama for not being specific - well this blog post plainly said that 'Obama ticked off the elements of his policy for subprime mortgages' but did not list them.

So just becuase the blog didn't go into policy detail doesn't mean that it's not there.  No offense, but lay off this crazed fanaticism and crazy defensiveness of Hillary Clinton.   It's like, not enough to say you support her - you have to tear down anything Obama says or does regardless of merit.

As a democrat I've applauded both candidates on certain things and also looked poorly on both candidates for certain things...but some of you guys are just ridiculous zealots.  I've noticed this happen as people get more 'personal' about this nomination and it just seems really immature and fanatic.
This brings up an excellent issue. Hillary claims to be a comeback kid because she won New Hampshire and Nevada. In fact, she won one less delegate than Obama in those two states and will probbly end up further behind when the Edwards' delegates line up behind Obama.

This has been the tendency all campaign-long ... Hillary's campaign (and the media) think the popular vote has some meaning. The rules of the contest though are all about delegates and Obama's incredibly well-organized campaign has figured out how to win delegates, while Hillary complains about the rules or the referees. The media, though, supports her futile quest by seeing it the same way ... They say she won Texas ... not only did she get less delegates there, she actually won fewer popular votes there (do the math yourself - Obama won 56% of the million caucus-goers ... a 120,000 vote margin ... she won the primary by 100,000 votes) And, since when is the national popular vote an issue? His campaign organization proves that he is the candidate most ready to lead a team in the White House to be ready on January 20. (Can't stand the repetition of Day One).
The ones who will lose the election are not Hillary or Barack. They are those Democrats who actually have no understanding of a Democratic party and direction as opposed to a Republican direction. So, they, like the last time when they "liked" George Bush personally more than Al Gore, vote for the one they like. We see where that got us. But, that is the reality. Many Democrats have no idea that the election is about principles and not about the aura of a person or their own good or bad feelings. Many Democrats still think this is about voting for your favorite Prom King (or Queen).
Good luck trying to joust with a Clinton 'persona'... not unlike that of Don Quixote and the windmills. Both Clintons have developed their own public 'persona' over the past decades; they will adjust howsoever is necessary to present a winning image... the cost is not the question.

It's over. Billary doesn't have the delegates. These desparate swipes are proof that the Clinton's will do anything, including destroying the Democratic Party, to get elected. If the Lewinski fiasco didn't expose their complete lack of morality, their behavior now has.
Bill please go away.  enough!  It's over!  american has taken enough of you and your transparency!
I'm all in favor of any strategy that allows Bill to speak.

Obama '08
It isn't necessary to post my comments.  Please try to get over the Obama mania and stop the negative comments about Hillary Clinton.  Remember there are Democrats who believe that Hillary is the candidate who can beat John McCain in the election.  We are not impressed with your political team and have stopped viewing your biased "shows."
Here's another one from the Its All Bushs Fault Vault.[while we are on the subject of NH].

The AP has noted that arch-Clintonite political architect Sydney Blumenthal had been arrested for DUI in New Hampshire and skated yesterday because the arresting officer has been called to Iraq duty with a reserve unit and could not show up in court.[MSNBC,feeling that it was more important to run Bon Jovi frontman Richie Zamboras arrest for same crime].
The GOP can sling all the mud they want. Nothing will offset the stark contrast of Obama and McCain on the same debate stage:one candidate looking old and frail and the other vigorous and charismatic.Bring it on Republicans! The American voter is turned towards the future.
Hillary- I would never im mean never in my life forget if i was getting shot at with my kid with me.
Your kidding right?
He clearly insults them to make a point, and then claims that he is firmly behind them, and in staying with the current form of campaigning it's all Obama's fault.

Give me a break!

...and to think I use to like this guy so much.
If Hillary is so qualified to be president with 30+ years of experience and an anti-Bush platform, why didn't she run 4 years ago against George W. Bush when her party asked her to?  Could it be she thought she'd just coast into an 8 year gig unopposed?  She just exudes the underhandedness that many people are just sick and tired of hearing every day.  The constant bullying seems more appropriate on a child's playground and not amongst adults striving for the most prestigious and important job in the world.  The respect I had for Hillary Clinton is gone.  She's ruined her reputation amongst a number of Democratic women.  It is truly sad how she's chosen to run her campaign.
Whatever the GOP has planned for Senator Obama, there is no doubt it will be dealt with, as decisively, and effectly, as he has handled the Clinton campaign's onslaught. Let them all breath their threats. Their plots are weak, and doomed to crash, and burn. Just look at the smoldering remnants of the Clinton attack machine. Blown to bits by the release of a Bosnian non-snipper visual, and lots of tax returns. Barack, with his clean contest continues to emerge undaunted, and rising in the polls!

This is no more than poker-faced posturing, wolf ticketing, and chest thumping. They are afraid of YOU Barack.

Pulling for Obama '08
Just shut up and give up.  Everyday they find a new way to infuriate people in their own party, this time one of their supporters.  At this point I almost (ALMOST) wish she would get the nomination so that she could see in the general election just how many people have come to resent her tactics and ultimately her campaign.

Barack Obama is FOLLOWING THE RULES LAID OUT BY THE DNC.  How someone's candidacy can be undermined by following the rules is beyond me, but apparently Billary thinks that blaming Obama for the lack of Michigan and Florida revote is a good political move, rather than blaming the myriad of individuals actually to blame is just another whimsical stroll down her world of unreality.

Hey Billary, Michigan and Florida democrats voted and they each independently decided that they did not feel comfortable holding a revote, probably partially because they knew it would just give you someone else to sue when it didn't come out how you wanted (remember threatening to sue Texas democrats?).

I honestly can't tell if she thinks she still has a chance, or if she's just trying to ruin Barack Obama's chances of winning the general election so she could have another shot in 4 years.  Either way, she is a self-serving, ego-maniacal "monster" who should grow up and realize that her campaign is slowly eroding the soul of the democratic party.
Please Mr & Mrs Clinton go away, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! The lies are becoming hard to take. A reality check would be the best thing for you to do. You have had Wolfson, McAuliff, Rendell and the rest since your senate compaign and oh yeah, the paul v clinton which is coming up right???
Why is it that everytime Bill Clinton says something stupid, Hillary's always changes what he really meant to say. Hillary's camp is a veery confuse individuals, they are what we call talking from both sides of thier mouth, and sometimes from all sides of thier mouth.

If you ask me it would seem hillary is the unelectable one in nov.
So, in other words, she just mispoke when she said New Hampshire was allowed to go out of turn. No big deal. Its not like she said she had to leave the state under sniper fire at the airport.
If the positions were reversed, the Clintons would be screaming every day for Obama to get out for the sake of the party.
I have to say if that is the sole advantage that Clinton has over Obama; that she has had attacks from the GOP for ages and been able to survive, then that isn't much.  I am sure that Obama can do that.  We aren't looking for someone who has done that already.  We are looking for someone to lead despite the attacks not just say I have faced them and survived.
Here in NH we had the FULL field of Presidential candidates not just 2 and Obama lost to Hillary by only a few percentage points NOT by a landslide.

Yes, Bill Clinton was criticizing NH but we can take it. He just needs to remember if Hillary makes it to the general election he'll probably have to show up back here with his tail between his legs trying to drum up votes and they just might not be able to get as many as she needs.
And it appears that the Republicans will in fact win if Obama is the nominee. GOP scare tactics work, and they will work even more when used against a wimpy wussy US Senator who says he'll have tea and cookies with Chavez, the Iranian leader, and North Korea's leader, and beg them to be our friends.
I WONDER ABOUT OBAMA'S ECONOMICS.
OBAMA IS A LIBERAL-TAX AND SPEND- ALSO HE IS UN-ELECTABLE IN NOVEMBER.
I agree with most of the posts here that are anti clinton and I used to love the Clintons.  I agree with Ariel of Jupiter, Florida.  It will be no contest when Obama is the nominee and he is sitting at a debate table with that old washed up boring McCain who is just more of the same horrible past 7-l/2 years.  There will be no contest.  Obama will sweep him off the stage and they can swift boat him all they want.  This time we will be ready.  I can't say the same would be true contrasting HRC and McCain.  Remember, he will be able to show films of Bill and Hillary talking about what a great patriot is and is ready to lead the country.  Go ahead Bill keep on talking.  UGHHHHH
It doesn't matter that the DNC made the rules and the elected officials messed up.  Punish the people who actually made the mistake, but not the innocent bystanders, who were the voters.  They live in America and now they are told that they are being punished by these so called 'elders' so they don't get their voice heard! All democrats should be outraged!

well, if the democrats don't care about these voters then why should they stay with this party?
hey I just heard on FOX that the wealthy democratic women hillary supporters sent a letter to Pelosi, saying she was wrong for saying the superdelegates should vote the way the people in their districts voted!  And further told her to change her statement, OR they might be inclined to not support democrats running for senate that Pelosi is backing.  Isn't that....like illegal??  Especially to tell the speaker of the house...do it our way or else!!
This is the Clinton machine at work people!
Just like the pressure being put on the press with threats in phone calls, and e-mails.  When you can't win on character, honesty, integrity...you use the old back room tactics...and you threaten people!

The article makes interesting reading.  What is perhaps the most interesting thing about it, is how it essentially, is already criticizing how the Republicans attack whichever Democratic candidate wins the nomination.

Strange isn't it, that while the Republican's have been pretty much silent, as the Clinton crew beats the Rev. Wright issue to death, and accuses (by omision) Obama's patriotism, and his ability to lead, while Obama's camp is having a blast with Clinton's Bosnia/sniper fire, Bill's obviously "mispoken" racial remarks, etc.

So, the tone of the article might be - "geez, it's ok for Democrats to criticize each other, but the Republicans are bad guys, because they are going to use the same arguments"?

Optimist that I am, I actually believe its possible that McCain, and Obama, may well be able to run a "relatively" clean campaign (let's not expect too much - this is presidential politics.

However, a Clinton McCain battle will almost certainly turn ugly, from day one.
Last week John McCain returned to New Hampshire to thank the state voters who rallied for him in his first caucus or primary 2008-Win!

Meanwhile, Bill Clinton is disappointingly, sounding the opposite, - and spoiled!  He's complaining when he should be doing what McCain is doing.  He's not showing the attitude of gratitude for the New Hampshire First in Nation primary, without which Hillary would have been left in the dust of the Iowa caucus.  People like myself, really rallied in this state to pull her back into the contest after Iowa: by housing out-of state volunteers and many other grass root actions in Southern New Hampshire areas of Nashua and Salem where the voters, brought her over the line to victory here.

Once the Nashua and Salem votes came in, her victory was ascertained according to the Concord Monitor.

Senator Obama would have been  welcomed in Michigan had he campaigned and I am not so sure that Hillary would have won there anyway; not with the intellectual voters that are attracted to the mind of Obama: from the University of Michgian at Ann Arbor, to Wayne State and the history making Motown music industry in Detroit that emerged with the civil rights movement in the 1960's.  The same bright people that would vote for the brilliant mind of Obama!!  With the black voters of Michigan to come out for Obama just as strong as the female voters Hillary is counting on through the state's female Governor, I don't think she would get the 50% vote, not with Obama's name on the ballot! Not in Michigan!!!
i can see these people have so much hate inside .yet they say they are conservative evangelicals etc cant they read well if they are all christians why cant they forgive as it is said in the BIBLE THE OUR FATHER PRAYER .FORGIVE US OF OUR TRESPASS AS WE FORGIVE THEM THAT TRESPASS  AGAINST US .OR YOUR SOULS WILL ALL END IN HELL BECAUSE YOU DISOBEYED GOD PS GOD DIDNT SAY HE MADE WHITE  AND BLACK .DEM OR REP . AND YOU DONT HAVE TO READ THIS HE MADE MAN AND WOMAN AND YOU WILL BE JUDGED AS PER THAT
The Clintons do think we are all very stupid.  Their style is well known to all of us by now, I HOPE.  They are "old school" politicians from a different time, maybe even a different planet.  When will we have had enough?  America, what ails us, that we will not move on, not try to better ourselves and the world, but would choose instead to stay with politics and politicians who have helped to create a country in which none of us can feel comfortable or proud?
Not sure why this is a big deal.  According to Hillary, no one should vote except the delegates (supers and others).  Since she encourages the delegates to vote against the people -- why the H... are we wasting so much time, energy and money on this issue.  Nobody matters but Hillary.
UGHHHHH
With all the "accidents" that happened to the friends, supporters, government officials, etc... surrounding the Clintons during the 90's, does any one really believe Obama would risk selecting Hillary as vice president?
You know, when all this primary stuff started a year ago, I really didn’t have much interest in any of the candidates specifically, only “let’s get anyone else in there other than Bush”. I hadn’t heard of Barack Obama, didn’t feel any specific kinship towards Hillary Clinton, and probably was leaning more towards John Edwards except I couldn’t quite picture him tough enough to accomplish the job. So, I started watching the debates and reading up on all the candidates. I even got on that website (?) that asked a series of questions to see who was more in-line with my own beliefs and positions. I knew once this race got really going, the mudslinging would start, as it tends to do when so much is on the line. But I also knew to try and focus on the message, the track record and the gut feeling I got watching all the Democratic candidates make their cases on the debates. So, here we are, 2 people left standing, a lot of mud everywhere, and my focus still the same: who do I believe will get up, everyday, and work their butt off for me and every hardworking American, because frankly, that’s what matters at the end of all this. Not Parties, not what-ifs, not should haves, but who I believe and trust to seriously get the job done to clean up this situation we find ourselves in, thanks to 8 years of lunacy. Let’s face it, America’s world reputation is in tatters, our economy is a mess, our troops are battered and dying, and frankly, we have a LONG way to go to mend the lines of divisions in this country: racial, gender, economic, etc.  In a perfect, ideal world, we wouldn’t be voting for a person because of their “Party” and friends, we would be voting for that individual who has a track record of crossing those very lines and trying to get the important things we all want in life: health, wealth, harmony and happiness, regardless of, gasp, party affiliation. So, after taking that ridiculous but helpful little web questionnaire, watching all the debates, looking at the candidate’s records and just comparing resumes to resumes, I find myself picking the person that has a track record of what I am looking for. That person is Senator Clinton. She has worked hard and diligently for all Americans, and spent years (35) building strong relationships because she has a passionate vision of what America can be, not just because she is running for President. Senator Clinton is the right choice for me in '08
I want Bill to keep talking.  Why?  Because he doesn't want Hillary elected any more than I do.  His ego couldn't stand it.  His presidency would become a footnote to her legacy as the first woman president.  He, the self-described world's best politician, is swiftly sinking her boat while maintaining plausible deniability.  "Really, honey, ahm just try'n ta hep."
Goodness:  I can hardly believe it, another negative story on Clinton and positive spin for Obama.  You guys are so impartial you ought to work for FOX.  Let me also say for those of you who are running the Clintons down...why is it destructive if the Clintons point out something about Obama but O.K. for him and you to slam them.  This party will be over in June alright and a lot of pro Clinton people like myself will be voting for McCain.  When you have two more conservative judges on the supreme court don't wine about it.
Why the constant calls for Hillary to pull out of the race? 47% of the voters thus far have chosen her for their candidate. The calls for her withdrawl ignore this fact. With a margin this small and 9 states to go anything less than a race to the finish would be a diservice to her supporters. Remember without these people the general cannot be won.

If Obama wins, as it seems likely he will, so be it, all sides have had their say and one side prevailed. But to imply that my and every other Hillary voter's vote is inconsequencial is potentially a dangerous position to take. If Obama is in fact the unifier he and his supporters claim him to be he will let this process ride out until all voices are heard without further talk of inevitability.

And yes Florida and Michigan will matter in the general so they should matter now. Anything less is inviting a backlash that will potentially tip the scales in McCain's favor. This would be true regardless of which candidate had the most to gain in a revote, or seating of these "rogue' delegates.
Okay, I've got the solution to this whole thing. The DNC needs to pull Obama and Clinton from the race and put Kinky Friedman and Jeremiah Write on the ticket for the general election!

Alright, I'm kidding but it would be more entertaining and everything they said would offend everybody.

Go Obama!
Polictics need to grow up they weak when it comes to securing this country as a whole and finding ways to solve issues that shape the future of the people that is exactly why they did not see 911 coming. We do not want to hear B>S but facts. I do not think that half the media comments are real, but set and design to cause a debate we do not need that either we need the truth. Anybody that listens to the media is crazy. The polls figures are not correct just another design to cause debate and confusion among the people.

Those people that violated the official records should be fired and the new people should not be given access to files only the head director that is common sense but a "C" grade education would not know that Condelice is not smart either she is just about fed up with BUsh because he running her life the position she hold she really does not have say just another Uncle Tom!
If everybody should be counted then all the primaries either conducted on the same day or votes should be counted on the same day. Also you can not count the votes only from where you win.
Wasn't it just the opposite a couple months ago, Obama supporters stating they wouldn't vote for Clinton IF she got the nom? It will probably change in another month.  I'm an Indenpendent and I will never, ever vote for Hillary Clinton under any surcumstances. I have never seen a more whiny, spoiled brat-like, finger pointing, nail clawing champaign like the Clinton campaign. If Obama doesn't get the nom or McCain dissappoints me, I will go with Nader!
PAT FROM HUNTINGTON

I am originally from NY myself, Pat.

But you are so mistaken about voters and about Sen. Obama.

I think that the prevailing wisdom after 8 years of Bush and faced with 4 years of McCain which promises the same approach as Bush in Iraq and throughout the world with these other leaders will be:

"Give the black guy a chance."

Said or unsaid, race is out there; and I think this will be the prevailing view that gets Obama elected. And of course the implication is that "He can't do any worse"; when the hope remains that he can and will do a whole lot better.

I think so; and you should hope so as well.
Hillary did not choose to run 4 years ago for the same reason millions of Democrats think Obama is a weak candidate; a freshman Senator with no record and no experience to base a candidacy.
Obama and his supporters are not facing the reality of dirty GOP tactics and how they will not only use Rev. Wright, they will use Exelon Nuclear waste in groundwater, indicted Tony Rezko and his relationship with Iraqi billionaire working for Saddam Hussein in Oil for Food Program Scandal and how they endorsed and loaned Rezko funds to donate to Obama, IL Senate voting records that are full of questionable judgements by Obama, Obama's US Senate record and failure to hold hearings on NATO in Afghanistan, his votes on Iraq War, the list is a long one.
The General Election against the GOP will not be pretty, it will be brutal.
Most of you here do not like Hillary for her toughness, her tenacity, her resilience, her knowledge and experience, which are all what is required to win against the GOP. When it is over, you would be able to know her compassion, work ethic, connections with Republican and Democratic members of Congress to pass the legislation that our nation so desperately needs to repair the damage done by the guy you most liked to have a beer with, George Bush. (I'm glad I don't like beer, so my conscience is clear on that one)
Lilly--Clinton has every right to go to the convention and no democrat can stop her going to the convention floor. Reagan did it, Kennedy did it, and any candidate has that right. Don't buy Obama's gaming of Clinton with calls for her to quit in the 4th quarter. That's unamerican and if Obama was more of patriotic he might know that.
Well Hillary attacks are just about as good as the GOP attacks. As Obama supporters, we will stand strong no matter what comes up during the General. I hope you realize that McCain has many things he should be afraid of, he will not be running against, just another candidate, he will be running against a gifted candidated.

It does not matter who runs against McCain, as democrats we will have to deal with it. So there is no sense in running away or being scared of the GOP machine, we just need to know how to pull our resources and fight until the end and then we don't have to worry about infighting, we can go all the way in the way of attacking without question.
