NH reaction; GOP strategy v. Clinton

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 3:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
A couple of other items from today...

Bill Clinton's comments that Democrats “let New Hampshire go out of turn,” and that they have a Democratic Secretary of State, is causing a mini stir in the Granite State.

The New Hampshire Union Leader: "Former New Hampshire Democratic Chairman Kathy Sullivan, a state Clinton campaign co-chair, said she believed that Bill Clinton was criticizing the DNC in his remarks, not New Hampshire.

"But the former president also appeared to imply in his statement that the DNC allowed the New Hampshire primary to be held earlier than scheduled in the DNC rules because Secretary of State Bill Gardner, who set the date of the New Hampshire primary as set out by state law, is a Democrat.

"Sullivan said Bill Clinton was mistaken to suggest that Gardner's party affiliation was in any way related to New Hampshire receiving a waiver from the DNC.

"Clinton campaign spokesman Kathleen Strand said, 'Hillary and Bill Clinton have been staunch and ardent supporters' of the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire. 'That's indisputable.'

"She said the former president was not criticizing New Hampshire, but instead saying that 'just as New Hampshire voters had a voice, Michigan and Florida votes should have a voice' and that 'Obama should know better than anyone in this campaign that the campaign is not over until the last vote is counted. New Hampshire made that point to him pretty clearly.'"

This article from Salon is an interesting read. It lays out what the Republican strategy would be for a Nominee Clinton:

"Though many Democrats like and respect Clinton as a role model, an effective legislator and a fighter against a relentless GOP onslaught, the image Republicans would want in voters' minds this fall if she wins the nomination is far more sinister. They'll say Clinton will do or say anything to win, and that she can't be trusted (also, she'll raise your taxes). McCain's campaign will call her a liberal and paint her support for ending the war in Iraq as a surrender to terrorists (the same strategy they'd use against Obama). Clinton's problem is that many voters already see her in a negative light; there isn't much work Republicans would have to do to put her there.

"Ironically, that might make Clinton immune to dirty tricks like the ones the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth pulled on John Kerry (or like the mud the GOP is already planning to throw about Obama's minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright). This is, after all, a candidate whose billing records as a private lawyer in Arkansas in the 1980s, the infamous lost-and-then-found Rose records, were subpoenaed, examined and even dusted for fingerprints by Republican investigators in Congress over a decade ago. When Clinton ran for reelection to her Senate seat two years ago, even the sleaziest GOP operatives basically left her alone, allowing her to cruise to victory without coming under heavy fire. But there isn't much out there voters haven't already heard about Clinton, or her husband; why bother trying to fight the battles over the White House travel office again?

More: "The other line of attack Clinton faces if she does wrest the nomination from Obama is over how she does it. Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams called it "stealing" the nomination, and he'd be happy to tell voters all about the process that put Clinton over the top. "If she wins, it's because these non-elected delegates are going to be countering what happened in primaries and caucuses around the nation," he said. "I think that would be very divisive for them." Other Republicans say polls show independents don't like the thought of superdelegates picking a nominee who trailed in the elected delegate count. "The party that created the whole open primary system and ended the deals behind closed doors and smoke-filled rooms is the one that's kind of relying on that after all," Bolger said.

But the piece ends this way: "If Clinton does pull off yet another family comeback, in a political career already dotted with them, her message to Republicans may well be (to quote a figure from a different political dynasty), 'Bring it on.'"

DON'T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-self, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become  President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama  has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

Sincerely

jacksmith...
obama was only present at the church ,so guilt by association, clinton "misspoke' about sniper fire, is that what out and out lying is called now, !!!!if her memory is that selective how does she expect to remember to answer the phone at 3 am and why????
she treats americans as tho" they are idiots, thank goodness they are not. irene
Finally the world see Hillary lie's out her mouth.
Thats the change of the polls.
Nothing came out of obama mouth to change polls it was from someone else.
Obama trying to chane the world for better.
Listen voters

OBAMA 08

I think Hillary knows she will not get the nomination and will do basically anything to make sure Obama is defeated in the general election even though that would mean giving the race to the republicans. That way she would be able to run again in 2012. Hillary is really only thinking about herself not the party which in the end will probably ruin her chances of getting the nomination in 2012 if she is perceived to help McCain win in 2008.

Billary, Hillary, Billary, please stop the madness. Everytime one of the Clintons open their mouths they destroy themselves more and more every day. I agreed with mike ca. If the shoes were on the other feet you would have been trying to get Sen.Obama to step down or even go to the DNC and try to make them have him step down.  Hopefully they will get so fed up with you and your cheating husband and ask you to step.  Oh yea! Bill and Hillary why don't you talk about that Los Angeles Superior Court date you have coming up on April 25, 2008, @ 8:31 a.m., case no.:bc304174, case type:FRAUD
Obama & Clinton supporters should beware.  When you're reading comments, like this one, that are in response to  Obama/Clinton news stories, keep in mind that there is high probability that the most outrageously false and slanderous comments (about either candidate) might be written by Republicans hoping to divide and conquer by creating more animosity than there should be.

Just food for thought before you let your emotions get the best of you.
Please Obamamanticas go away!!!!!
McCane will win anyway no one wants to vote for an UN-American like Obamaaaaaa!
Bill said..... but he really MEANT to say.....  BUT, he actually said......

How many times do we have to hear about what Bill said, or what he meant to say, or what was implied??  Point is, he knows damn well what he's saying, and what he means to say, and exactly how to say it.  However, I'm not voting for Bill Clinton, therefore, I don't give a rats ass what he has to say.

Bill Clinton really needs to drop out of this race.

I think it's amazing how people seem to think that democrats would not vote democrat (Obama) in GE. The notion that democrats will decide to vote for McCain or not vote because of Obama's plans to talk instead of saber rattle is just wishful thinking. In fact it is those types of changes that make him so appealing to the millions of new/old democratic voters, independents, and yes some republicans. The amount of registered republicans pales in comparison to the democrats numbers so the republicans have no choice but to follow HRC's "Neverland" strategy. They so want HRC because they know that going after Obama will put them in a weird place in the eyes of voters. When they mudsling and he just says 100 years. When they mudsling and he says Economy. When they mudsling and he says Jobs. They know a fight with Obama will be Good (Obama) vs Bad (McCain) and in the end the republicans will look like ogres and Obama will look like the uniter. Simple! Republicans need the fight to be Bad (Clinton) vs Bad (McCain) for them to prevail. To bad the delegate math won't allow it to happen.
I'm tired of the Obamania. I hear about how everyone should see through Hillary's words, well what about his? Before the Wright fiasco, if it had come down to Obama vs. McCain, I would have still voted democrate, even with the other press (ea. NAFTA lies he has told), but now, I'd give my vote to McCain in hopes he'll never take the whitehouse, and I use to be a die hard democrate. (Will be the first time I would ever cast a republican vote) It's not that Obama scares anyone. He doesn't. Obama supporters are hypocrites for jumping on Hillary for virtually the same tactics he is using as well. (The blue dress comment out of the obama camp was very distasteful).

Clinton 08 (soon to change to McCain 08).
America is ready for the tyranny of the self absorbed baby boomer generation to be over.  Young families today are struggling to pay huge mortgages so that retirees can live large off the proceeds of selling the homes they bought for tens of thousands of dollars to young families for hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Young workers are paying record sums into Social Security because the last generation demands what they say was promised to it by leaders already long dead.

Clinton and the rest of her generation have done more than enough damage to the US and the world.   Look at the mess they have created by sending more and more of the blue collar jobs to Asia.  That wasn't inevitable and didn't happen by mistake.  You kind of expect Republicans to be all about giving corporate America the goodies, but it was Bill Clinton who lobbied for NAFTA and China and it has been Hillary Clinton who pushed to give India anything it wanted.  Who is really working hard to provide "solutions" for the workers of America?

The Clinton and Bush family dynastys have done more than enough damage.  Time to step aside and consider what you have done.  Begging for forgiveness would be a good next step.

P.S.  Beating McBush in November will not be hard for Obama.  New ideas and a fresh outlook will beat "more of the same".

But why should New Hampshire recieve preferential treatment when Florida and Michigan do not?

Some states appear to have more rights than others and that is just not right.
I read the blog and most of the comments, and I agree we need to get to the real deal. I have been hearing Mr. Obama say he wants to change America "What does that mean"? Does that mean that he thinks that if he makes it to the White House the system will change and he will have any control over what goes on in Washington. I am sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not up to the President of the United State.

If you want my vote, explain to me what you mean by "Change". I like America just like it is and most American do.
I have said this more than onec that you cannot trust HRC, see below this has come up again.

After 9/11, Hillary had a problem. New Yorkers were desperately focused on their own needs for protection and they were saddled with a Senator who was not one of them -- an Arkansasn or was it a Chicagoan?

Interviewed on the "Today" show one week after 9/11, she spun an elaborate yarn. The kindest thing we could say was that it was a fantasy. Or a fabrication.

She said that Chelsea was jogging around the World Trade Center on 9/11 and happened to duck into a coffee shop when the airplanes hit. She said that this move saved Chelsea's life. But Chelsea told Talk magazine that she was in a friend's apartment four miles from ground zero when the first plane hit. Her friend called her, waking her up, and told her to turn on the TV. On television, she saw the second plane hit, disproving Hillary's claim that "she heard the plane hit. She heard it. She did."

So why did Hillary make up the story about Chelsea? Most likely to was because her co-senator (and implicit rival for the voter's affection), a real New Yorker Chuck Schumer spoke of his daughter, who attended Stuyvesant High School (Dick's alma mater) located next to the TRade Center, being at real risk on 9/11. Hillary needed to make herself part of the scene.

She invented the entire story on national television, the "Today" show, and didn't blink an eye.

Her fabrication on the "Today" show was no unique foray. It is her standard M.O.. It gives us pause in evaluating all of her stories and calls into question her entire credibility.

The woman just stands and LIE, LIE LIE.
We should not let her get away with this.
we do nit want this in the white house, she will sell us all out.
HRC is just a BIG FAT LIAR.......

Obama '08

Someone show us where the Clintons can win the nomination without eating one of their own in the process.

If they are willing to eat a bright young mind like Obama in clear public view, what makes any of you think they will pause one second before they sell your interests down the river?

If the Reverend Wright is the only thing anyone can attack Obama on, he will win simply by being himself and elevating the conversation out of the gutter.

Imagine the dirt the Reps could dig up on the Clintons during the 8 UNvetted years since they held the White House.  Campaign, library and foundation funding?  Please...mountains of material there.  Bill on his own without the public scrutiny of being Prez?  One can only imagine.

It's time for the Clintons to either campaign on the issues and stop the slash and burn OR to get out of the race and volunteer to serve the nation in the myriad of positions that will be open.

Think about Senate Majority Leader Hillary.  Think about Supreme Court Justice Hillary.  Just those two positions, in equally important arms of our three armed government system, would wield as much power and carry a far longer tenure than being Prez.

This country needs all of us to use all our talents in all different areas to dig ourselves out of the hole we're in now.

Stop tearing us apart with scorched earth and serve this nation as you say you want to Hillary.
The rules of the contest are whoever gets the most delegates wins the nomination. Just stick to it period. No more explanations or rationalisations.
I am a strong Democrat. My father voted for John Kennedy when I was a little girl and got all kind of taunts hurled at him for voting for a Catholic. I feel if your are a true Democrat you will respect my vote and I will respect yours. I am an African American and I don't take my vote lightly. Too many people have fought and died for me a Black women to cast my vote. So you people that want to vote for John McCain just because your candidate doesn't win the nomination and evidently want 4 more years of George Bush, via McCain then you really don't understand the Democratic Party and the notion that it's for the people. Oh my God! I see how we have had 7 yrs. of stupidity in the White House + all the scandels in Washingtion.  You are the clones that voted for George W., am I right? You are so self righteous and evidently you don't read or can't perceive what you do read. Wow! Go ahead and vote your revenge vote and put the Republicans back in, I will survive. Ive done so fopr the last 7 yrs., you'll be the ones to live with what you've done. Now you have a nice day.
