Obama calls Wright issue a distraction

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 4:41 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Obama defended his controversial former pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright today, on the heels of statements by Hillary Clinton that she would have left Wright's church had she been in Obama's place.

Obama invited the audience in Greensboro to come to Trinity United Church, the church Wright founded and where he preached for 30 years. Obama called it a "wonderful, welcoming church" that had a pastor who was "trying to teach a lesson connecting scripture to our daily lives and people struggle with illness and family and finances and all the things that people normally talk about."

Turning to Wright, Obama said his "former pastor said some objectionable things when I wasn't in church on those particular days, and I have condemned them out right."

But trying to contextualize Wright's comments, Obama added, "I do have to remind people though this is somebody who was preaching at least three sermons at least a week for 30 years. And so,  [sic] got boiled down; They found five or six of his most offensive statements, boiled that down to a … half-minute sound clip and just played it over and over again."

He said the clips spoke "to some of the racial divisions that we have in this country and tapped into those divisions. I hope people don't get distracted by this because as I said in my speech last week on Tuesday; we can't afford to be distracted."

Yesterday, Clinton had said in an interview that individuals can't choose their relatives, but they can choose their churches. Her comments followed a week of silence on the issue and statements praising Obama's speech.

Asked about religion on the stump, Obama started to raise the issue of Wright's comments on his own last week and appeared critical of the media for replaying them on an "endless loop you YouTube and cable news," he has said, repeating a line from the Philadelphia speech.

Today, he told the majority African-American crowd that Trinity belonged to a majority white denomination, an unusual statement that the senator has never made before.

"United Church of Christ is, by the way, a 99 percent white denomination," Obama said.

Today, speaking to the young, white man who had asked Obama about his faith, he said that focusing on Wright was a distraction.

"You and I, we are both Christians," Obama said to the young man. "And even if you’re not a Christian, we are both Americans. And we cannot solve the problems of America, if every time somebody somewhere says something stupid that everybody gets up in arms."

As a typical white person I an in no way upset about Obamas' minister. I feel that his pastor doesn't make who he is.He is only a small part of his life and influences. I don't feel he hates white people or that his pastor hates white people. There are divides in the country and we need to realize that.Obama gave that great speech on race and I feel he knows that racial divides are out there and it gives him a great way to open the line of communication on this issue.
I want this man to be my next President!
A DISTRACTION?  How ironic.  Obama has been using pretty speeches to distract us from his hatred of America, whites and jews.

Obama should be removed from office and forbidden to run for president. He cannot be president of a country that he, his wife, and his uncle figure/spiritual advisor despise. Obama obviously was in synch with the racist hatred spewed in his church.  He HAD to be.  HE CHOSE TO BE A MEMBER FOR 20 YEARS!  The videos show the crowd in a frenzy of applause and support for Rev. Wright's hate-filled ranting. The pastor's audience was not shocked and appalled - they were invigorated and shouting in approval and in agreement like this is what they had come to hear.  "God D*mn America!"  The crowd went NUTS in its support...

Wright is preaching racial division, hatred for America, hatred for whites and Jews... And this man is like an uncle to Obama - his mentor and spiritual advisor?  This is some crazy @ss sh!t going on here.  And then there is Michelle Obama.  Finally proud to be an American?  Where is the video of Obama and his wife applauding to this Rev. Wright HATESPEW.  There has to be one somewhere.

The scariest thing about the all of the videos was not the words that Rev. Wright said – but the Hatred that he projected and the Hatred that the crowd willfully reveled in.  It was a RACIALLY DIVISIVE HATE FESTIVAL – and the crowd was shouting and gyrating in approval and excitement.  Barrack Obama attending these sermons for 20 years. He willfully subjected himself and his family on a regular basis for 20 years to lectures like these about racial hatred.

Imagine that much hatred and racism in the President of our country.  Obama may be the worst candidate to ever run for office with this going on.  I cannot imagine a more racially divisive man in the White House after this "Pastor Disaster". And I cannot imagine a crazier candidate for President during a terrorist age. He has Muslim ties AND he has been conditioned by his uncle figure/spiritual advisor to hate whites, Jews, and America.  What the heck is going on? And his middle name is HUSSEIN? I thought George W. Bush was the worst thing that could happen to our country.  I was wrong.  Barack HUSSEIN Obama is as scary as his name sounds.

MSNBC, please show the entire sermons that the offensive remarks were taken from.  Those comments were taken completely out of context.  Wright may be critical of US foreign policy, but to say he is anti-American is irresponsible.  He might focus too much on the plight of "his people" for some folk's taste, but to say that the US is run by "rich white people" is not racist.  It's an undisputable fact.  Sure, there are many of black, hispanic, asian and native american elected officials in this country, but very few are in high positions like governor, senator, and congressperson, and none have ever been president, vice president, or majority or minority leaders in the Congress.

I have listened to two of the sermons in full. The media has hyped these.  Rev. Wright is not a racist or anti-American.  Before you judge him, you should know the full truth.  God forbid he comes to harm from this, because the media will be to blame for not telling the entire truth.
it does not matter anymore  we know what the pastor said and it stands as is.we will not vote for him so he can say what ever he wants about his preacher .
obama has condemned the statements??? How? By listening to them for TWENTY YEARS??

If this was any other candidate he/she would have been run out of the race the day this crap hit the airwaves. Not obama and I wonder WHY???

Maybe someone feels they have a added right no one else has perhaps???????

As I life long Democrat I have to say I am amazed at the certain air of superiority and EXPECTED added insulation and advantages certain groups have over others.

Get out of the race obama you are a disgrace and to STUPID to know it. Or is it arrogance???
IT is a distuction, he is not responsible for his pastors remarks. We need talk about important issues.
you only post whats good for obama anyway,we know you all at msnbc, are in love with obama, keith olberman and chris matthews are so in love with this guy it shows through their skin, that is why i started a group of bloggers not to see their shows.

Senator Clinton got caught lying through her teeth about her experience and immediately slams Obama.

Senator Clinton is counting on historic racism of America to rear it's ugly head.  The Clinton Machine has been trying to fan those flames since Carolina.  She is relentless.  She has decided the Democratic National Party does not need nor want the Black American vote.  She has attempted to alienate and instigate and unite minority groups against Black America.  She has painted with broad swipes her vision of Black America and is reminding all of America why not a Black Man.

Shame on DNC for allowing ineffable Clinton campaign behavior to continue.
The Clintons are like the elementary school bullies that wouldn't go away. No one really liked them, but people feared their tenacious nature and were afraid to stand up against them.

Wouldn't it be ashame if the bullies won?
Hes a freakin liar, in his speech he said that he heard some hateful comments made by the reverend but that he "absolutley" disagreed.
C'mon people out there, this guy is a freaking fake.
He is so full of it and himself---- He uses other peoples titles and words, has the nerve to put his wife revernd and business associate (rezko) under the rug during the campaign.
He has relationshi8ps with all these people, but then shuns them not to screw up his campaign????
What a hypocritical opportunistic.
Dont let him make a fool out of you.
Let the media scrutinize him like they do  Hillary.
He is a racist, yet he plays the race card since South Carolina.
He now invites people to his church to hear the sermon?
HIS REVEREND IS NOT GOING TO MISBEHAVE NOW, DONT BE IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Let he, who is without sin, caste the first stone"
Yeah, it's distracting you from pulling the wool of Americans' eyes Obama!
It is a distraction. People are tired of hearing about it and it takes away from the real issues that need to be addressed in this country.

Now lets be fair: list the notable spiritual advisors of past Bush and McCain - Pat Robertson, Farwell, Parsely, Hagee who said 9/11 was punishment from God and Katrina punishment on Black people. Well thats very acceptable because all these pastors are white.

Vote McCain, becos Hagee is right - Catholic Church is like a whore.
LOL! A wonderful welcoming church? Please keep it up Obama. Keep defending your crackpot, racist church. No-one but your most loyal supporters is buying it. And the"former" pastor lable falls flat as well. The new pastor is just as controversial. He is defiantly saying to America, I'm not leaving this church, I'm not going to stand up against racism, I'm not going to show courage anymore now than I did for 20 years. But we're supposed to elect him President? And I'm a democrat. I can only imagine how the republicans dfeel
UCC might be white, but Trinity isn't. Obama is trying to distract America away from this topic and we won't be distracted. He is trying to say it's no important, but it is. The spin isn't working this time. Obama wants it both ways. To court the most radical black views while telling white america it's the duty of whites to allow him that leeway. It was his duty to walk away. We don't have to excuse it.

MAN THIS GUY IS SLIPPERY.

NOTHING LIKE PASSING THE BUCK!!!!

I'm so glad Obama went on vacation. He needed a break from the hysteria, and he comes across as the voice of reason. I wish people would take him at face value. He is such a smart, well-spoken and optimistic man. What a breath of fresh air. Let's hope he survives all the folks gunning for him who see him as a threat to the status quo.
Excuse me, but isn't that what the speech on race that he gave last week was?  The speech when he finally admitted he had heard some of the comments, but still did not answer any questions.  Also the speech where he referred to the grandmother who loved and raised him as a "typical white".  Just wondering.
In 1983 Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University and while still in his mid twenties began working as a community organizer on the south side of Chicago. Having grown up without a father and in a non religious environment, it was then that Barack Obama began attending Trinity United Church of Christ and met the pastor of the church, Rev. Wright, a black man 20 years his senior, who became influential in his life and became part of his family, his “adopted uncle”, and who helped Barack Obama become a Christian believer.
Barack Obama has strongly denounced Wright's hyperbolic, 1960s style radical rhetoric that Wright has used in a few of his sermons and that is based on Wright's extreme anger and bitterness which Obama understands but doesn't share. But Barack Obama has refused to disown his "adopted uncle" simply for political expediency.
This is the cool head I want in the White House.  Someone who does not make rash decisions, someone with intelligence and able to reflect on matters of importance before acting.
So Obama was not there when his Pastor made the offensive remarks and somehow he did not know about them.  Wow, I guess it is OK then.  And he was just "present" when important votes were being cast in the Illinois senate, but did not vote. Wow, I guess it is OK then that he was just there.

At least he and his wife are making lots of money.  That should make all those "small" contributors to his campaign feel real good.  Wow.
Obama's point of getting distracted by a stupid comment goes both ways. There has been distracting media focus on statements by supporters of Hillary and her memory lapses, instead of comparing her policy plans for our nation and Obama's policy plans.
Although regarding Rev. Wright and making a conscious decision to befriend and attend his services, that does relate to a candidates' judgment and character.
Judgment and character are part of the criteria to make a decision about who would be the best choice for our Commander-in-Chief, and who would be the best ambassador to the international world and have the credibility to gain the respect of world leaders. Then this issue becomes more than just a distraction, but one of many judgment calls or choices that the "Leader of the Free World" will be required to explain to the rest of the world when they look to the United States to set the example of "one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Barack Obama is SO NEEDED in the Oval Office! His intelligence, his sensitivity to Americans and his Class are called for in times such as this.
He gave the most eloquent speech regarding Rev. Wright. He answered the questions. He took the time to LEAD us in a new and better direction.
For this business to go on and on is ludicrous.
Why aren't we seeing Hillary's "Out-of-Bosnia-Experience" projected on our tv screens daily as we are seeing Rev. Wright?
I think you know the answer to that one!
"We cannot solve the problems of America, if every time somebody somewhere says something stupid that everybody gets up in arms."

This should be a banner headline that hopefully everyone would read.  There have been enough stupid things said during this primary season that everyone running and many of their more visible supporters could own a piece of the stupidity.  It's not one group or the other.

Let's focus on the issues - God knows there are plenty of extraordinarily serious ones.
Obama had said previously that the church was predominately "white" before!  Somewhere it got lost in all the rhetoric because the media wanted to make something racial out of it!

I am told that if the entire sermon had been played, there would not have been this controversay in the first place.

Camp Hillary provided the tape to the media and then sat back and watched it blow up!
Attn: Anburajan

I guess you haven't done your homework, in your 4th to last paragraph, you stated this is the first Obama mentioned that the United Church of Christ is a 99% white denomination. Mr. Obama has previously mentioned this matter on a TV interview. Please do your homework.
Yes, Pastor Wright is a distraction. A distraction that Hillary very much needs to keep the public attention on religion and away from her fraudulent claims of experience and her non-disclosure. Hillary will not let this campaign get beyond race and religion because that is all she has...The Clinton's have a history of trying to destroy anyone that does not support their storyline, they use the news media very cleverly.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
He's correct, it is a distraction but lucky for Obama falsely recovered memories of combat tours in Bosnia are also a distraction. The only thing he has to do now is smile quietly and ride HRC's wave of hot air into the White House.
I love Obama's courage in standing by his mentor. Let us (Obama supporters) focus on his message of unity and his refusal to be tricked into joining his Democratic opponent in the gutter. It is difficult not to be enraged at the opponents' ugly tactics, but our energy is better used when we act on our highest ideals. Our candidate reminds us that all citizens are in this together (creating positive change!) Silona from Chico, CA
I guess the only place a Hillary supporter can get their comments posted are on Foxnews.I have tried to post 3 times on this issue and msnbc will not post my comments.I have said nothing offensive about Sen.Obama.I simply said I am a young democrat who supports Hillary.I will go post my comments where I know they will be seen.Kentucky girl 4 Hillary!!!!
"You and I, we are both Christians," Obama said to the young man. "And even if you’re not a Christian, we are both Americans. And we cannot solve the problems of America, if every time somebody somewhere says something stupid that everybody gets up in arms."

Amen.
i am so sick of NObama that i will probably vote republican for the first time in my life
Are you kidding me!!! A wonderful, welcoming Church? I can't believe it. How can he continue to be so absurd. He really must think he can say anything to his deaf, dumb and blind sheep.
Obama tries to blame me for his support of racism in the tune of $20,000 a year to that church and his unpatriotism. I didn't, his grandmother didn't and most American didn't sit in wrights' church listening to that garbage. So why we all have to feel shame and guilt because of his shame? I’m not racist. I don't appreciate being blamed for his racism, unpatriotism and poor judgment. His support of that garbage for 20 years helped held a sector of black people in bondage, not allowed them to be responsible for their short comings and blamed the white people. He helped held them in bondage by sending them the message that said they were inferior to white people and always will be. And have the nerve to blame me. Shame on him. At a miminum, I expect him to take responsible for his actions or lack thereof, which he hasn't, and as a maximum, I expect better judgment from one who is running for the president of the United States. Shame, Shame on Obama.
So we are supposed to believe in 20 some years Rev. Wright chose to preach these sermons only when Obama was not in church. GET REAL AMERICA!! I am sure this is just the beginning of the EXPOSURE OF BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA!!
Finally the world see Hillary lie's out her mouth.
Thats the change of the polls.
Nothing came out of obama mouth to change polls it was from someone else.
Obama trying to chane the world for better.
Listen voters

OBAMA 08

I find Obama a distraction. He is sexist and racist and has the audacity to play the race card himself every time somebody DARE ask him a question that might vett him. And he has learned all of this from Wright. It isn't bad enough that we have had to watch this man Wright's filth against our country, but now he is getting specific. As a "Garlic Nose" I would vote for Dracula before I would vote for this fake "uniter".
Obama is a patriot,

not in the sense of my country right or wrong.
But, my country make it right.

His patriotism is based in a civil morality, that looks out for all of us and our individual freedoms, rather than an individualism that doesn't care about the United States of America, but just your individual pocket book. It's a balancing act to be sure, but our freedom and the well being of our children depend on it.  Raise all the ships.

Praise the Lord.   Hillary's late and/or present comments will not affect Barack Obama in know way shape or/and formed.  Sen. Obama is a bright and intelligent man who believes in God with all his heart and soul.  He shall succeed.

Senator Obama is speaking to a disinterested news media.  Hillary will keep this discussion of race and religion on the front page as long as possible. Senator Obama has addressed this issue with honesty and intelligence, I would suggest he ignore the issue going forward.
Okay Obama, then let's talk about

1. Rezko
Sen. Obama wrote letters to city and state officials urging them to fund a Davis-Rezko housing project.  Rezko contributed millions to the Obama campaign, yet Obama only returned $85,000. Why didn't he return all the money.

2.  Barack Obama and former Weather Underground honcho William Ayers funneled money to Professor Rashid Khalidi, a known terrorist sympathizer. Khalidi serves on the faculty of Columbia University in New York and is best known as the professor who invited Iranian President Ahmedinejad to visit Columbia University after he finished his speech at the United Nations. According to confidential sources, Khalidi has direct ties to the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), a group on the US State Department's list of known terrorist groups.
William Ayers was also major fundraiser for Obama and they both sat on the board of The Woods Fund. In 2002, Obama participated in awarding grants through The Woods Fund, including a $70,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, a Chicago-based group founded by Rashid and Mona Khalidi.
In another suspected quid pro quo arrangement similar to those with Ayers and Davis-Rezko, Rashid Khalidi also held a fundraising event in his home for Barack Obama.

In the Middle East, Rashid Khalidi was known as a man to be reckoned with. From 1972 through 1983, Khalidi was the director in Beirut of the official Palestinian press agency, FAFA.
According to sources, when the Khalidi's left Chicago for Columbia University in New York, Rashid was honored with the Edward Said Chair in Arab Studies at that Ivy League university. Their goodbye party in Chicago included testimonials from Bill Ayers and Barack Obama.
"If he was to be President, how much would he look the other way when dealing with national security and dangers to our country? How much would he listen passively to terrorist leaders then lecture us on our ugly American status? This kind of change is not what our country needs!"
Basically. We have threats of wars in Iran, Syria, and Africa. How many continents is that everyone? There are larger issues at stake than whether someone made a comment. You can't hang someone over what a third person said. This is not the salem witch trials.
Obama is trying to help us out America. Let him.
He is not a God. Merely a better option in government than the ones who have been doing it. We need this.
Our global image, our national integrity, our system of progression in America and the principles of what makes of great deserve Obama as President of the United States of America!!!
For Sen. Obama to suggest that he was not aware of the statements made by Rev. Wright on several occasions is disingenuous. The fact that he had made some attempts to distance himself from Rev. Wright early in the campaign is a significant indication he was aware of Rev. Wrights controversial statements.

For me it has nothing to do with race, religion or freedom of speech. Rev. Wright has the right to lead his congregation as he sees fit. The individuals of the church have the right to remain members, attempt to instigate change from within the church leadership, or leave the fellowship in search of a new church. For Sen. Obama to remain a member and not to speak out until now when he is confronted with the inconvenient truth is  inexcusable.

For an elected official to stand by when an individual of authority in his chosen church makes blatant anti-government misstatements, and not to speak out is a strong indicator of a lack of character. Rev, Wrights statement implying that the government invented the HIV virus to kill blacks is simply false, and for Sen. Obama not to speak out until now is a disgrace.

I have personally made the decision to change places of worship in the past when the leader made statements that I found to be unacceptable. It is not a decision anyone takes lightly.  It requires strength of character to standup for what is right, and to lead by example.  Leadership when it counts, and change to someone you believe in.
people should watch the whole sermon before passing judgement.rev. wright was also quoteing a white man who was on fox news the night before. i hope people understand we have something special in obama.i hope the american people are smart enough to see it
Enough already about Rev. Wright.  It's obvious to me that the folks who keep dwelling on this were just looking for an excuse not to support Obama in the first place.  Well, they got it.  Let the rest of us move on to things that really matter, like the war in Iraq and how we're going to reverse the disastrous neglect of the past 8 years.

By the way, it doesn't help that the MSM insists on carrying this story on their front pages.
