Clinton tactics turn off some superdelegates

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 5:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
At a time when Sen. Hillary Clinton is increasingly relying on superdelegates to vault her to the Democratic Party's nomination, a handful of undecided and pledged superdelegates are coming forward to say her campaign's tactics in recent weeks are doing more harm than good.

The Democratic Party insiders say they believe Clinton's direct attacks against Sen. Barack Obama in recent days are hurting the party and its chances in November, and also say it is showing a calculated, desperate-to-win side of Clinton that they dislike.

"In looking at the manner in which the candidates are campaigning, I think it would be best they focused their attention on the presumptive nominee and showed our party which one is better in campaigning against McCain," said Garry Shay, a California superdelegate, who announced his support for Clinton.

Unlike some in the party, these superdelegates said they do not believe Clinton should drop out of the race. They said they are committed to the democratic process, and want to allow the states still remaining to cast their ballots. But they acknowledged Obama is the likely nominee and suggested the personal attacks were only hurting the party and its viability.

The Clinton campaign has been actively wooing these delegates, believing a plurality represents the strongest, and increasingly the only, way for her to win the nomination. But one undeclared delegate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the recent tactics are turning her and other superdelegates off.

"I don't think anybody's saying 'step aside,' but 'stop with the garbage' is what people want to say," the delegate said. "Just chill a little bit."

As activists committed to the party, they said, they have been impressed by Obama's ability to bring new Democrats into the fold, and they worry that Clinton is threatening that.

"We like the fact that there is a candidate that has won so many states overwhelmingly," the delegate said. "We're feeling her advisors are leading her in a path that diminishes her as well as him."

Several said they were angered by comments from James Carville, who called Bill Richardson "Judas" for backing Obama after serving in the Clinton White House. One delegate said Richardson's rationale for supporting Obama, and his implicit frustration at the Clintons' heavy-handed approach to garnering his support, was echoed among superdelegates.

Others said they were frustrated by recent reports that Clinton embellished her description of landing in Bosnia as First Lady, and said it suggested she would do anything to win. "I don't remember what movie I saw two weeks ago; I don't necessarily remember what I had for dinner last night," one superdelegate said. "But I would remember having to duck and run from sniper fire."

The final straw, though, were Clinton's comments Tuesday, when she said the Rev. Jeremiah Wright "would not have been my pastor." Several superdelegates saw it as a direct, personal attack on Obama.

"I think it's very dangerous for any candidate to constantly thrum on what they perceive as sensational criticisms of their opponent," said Debra Kozikowski, an uncommitted superdelegate from Massachusetts. "I would be more likely to respond positively to discussions of issues that effect Americans versus what might be perceived as character flaws."

Clinton campaign officials said Clinton's comments were a direct response to a question she received at an editorial board meeting and suggested personal attacks have gone in both directions in the primary race.

The party activists said they have been receiving calls from members, a majority of whom want them to support whoever has won the popular vote. Many superdelegates are themselves elected by the Democratic Party and believe most will follow the will of party members for the party's future, and their own viability.

And they say they are not buying some of the Clinton campaign's explanations as to why they should support her, whether it is her victories in large states, primary states or those likely to go Democratic in the November election.

"Periodically, over the last couple of weeks, you will see a news story or get something from the campaign, and you'll go, 'How stupid do you think I am?" one uncommitted superdelegate said. "All of us watch television all the time, read the newspapers. We all play with the little charts online too. We know it is virtually impossible."

One delegate said the Clinton campaign is "using Jeremiah Wright to scare white people."

"A full and fair debate about issues and differences and even fights is good," the delegate said. "Mud slinging, personal attacks and lying is never good for any political fight or party. And I see a lot of that coming from one side more than the other."

The delegates said there is little the party or its leaders can do to prevent the current back and forth. But some said they were increasingly in touch with Clinton campaign officials to say their support is in jeopardy.

"Uncommitted delegates can come out and say, 'If you don't stop this now, we won't vote for you,'" one uncommitted superdelegate said.

Sooo, the SD's are beginning to voice their opinions a little louder everyday.  Yep, the fat lady is about to start singing.

OBAMA, 2008!

KEITH OLBERMANN, THE BEST JOURNALIST IN THE WORLDDD!
Okay, so if you superdelegates see Obama as the "presumptive nominee," why the heck don't you come out of the woodwork and support him and put an end to the Clintons' shenanigans?  Profils in courage?  I think not.
I'll take McCain over Obama ANY day ANYTIME. Idon't want a racist, Anti-American for President.

Clinton 08
Ms. Clinton feels she is entitled to the Presidency and Mr. Obama is getting in her way.  Her big chance is slipping away and she'll do ANYTHING to revive her candidacy. That's the Clinton way. Don't expect this to end well or soon.
If Hillary doesn't win the nomination, I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue. Then I'm going to vote for John McCain, just to prove to the world how big a Hillary supporter I am. Who cares if he wants to keep the U.S. in Iraq for 100 years, or that he'll pack the Supreme Court with conservatives, or that he'll continue the Bush tax cuts for the rich? What's really important to me is being spiteful and teaching America a lesson that if Hillary can't be president, then NO Democrat can. Nyah.
I just think Hillary should do the right thing. Since she's developed such a bond between her and McCain, she should change party affiliations and become a republican. Then she and McCain can run together against their nemesis, Obama. She'd fit right in to the partys legacy of Nixon, Atwater, Rove racial polictics. Go, Hillary!!!
Mrs. Clinton made three speeches where she told her Bosnia lie.  This came out of her mouth.  Mr. Obama is being accused of "guilt by association", i.e., his pastor said some stupid stuff, so now he is a racist.  There is no proof that what Rev. Wright said is what Mr. Obama believes.

Now, what is worse "a person that makes stuff up to make people believe that she has foreign policy experience, or a guy that has a pastor that said some wrong things.
I wish Hillary could see beyond the moment and realize that, if she plays nice, she could be in line for a powerful position within the Democratic Party, even if it's not being the Democratic nominee. As it is, she's burning all her bridges.

I hope the superdelegates make a final decision directly after the June 3rd primary so that the candidate with the most pledged delegates has time to prepare for the general election. Waiting until the convention in August will NOT be helpful.
Patty as a Obama supporter I would not want your vote anyhow. Get informed, please read and comprehend what you are reading. A racist- Obama, prove.
Hey Patty, I look at you as being in the group that wouldn't vote for Obama in the general, but would you still vote for McCain if it was a Obama(Prez)/Clinton(Vice-Prez) ticket? Because I believe that that is what will have to happen to bridge the divide within the party. But I haven't heard any polls about that possibility yet. And if there are other people out there that has Patty's view point (not vote 4 Obama in the general if and when Clinton concedes), what are your thoughts.
Yes, Patty, he's racist against half of himself. Give me a break.
How is it that Obama is being held with a fine tooth comb about his Ministers remarks and yet and still both Mc cain, Hilery, Bill and there people have spoke just as much vain as his Minister whether it is anti american or racial, I would think that in 2008 racist remarks are just as anti american. At what point will they be held accountable for there irresponsible and vain remarks, this is just another tactic to take focus off of them, why is it taking so long for Hilery to turn her tax returns in sound like another Client clean up once again, also I would like to hear more about those who were found dead when investigations were being done to the Cliton family it seems to be a lot of over sights these days,  give it a break those were the opionion of his Ministers not his and it is beginning to sound like it might be some truth in what he said.  If you do the math if Hilery takes the office it will then be 24 yrs of hell under the same two families Bush and Clinton so yes it is time for a change.  Since things are being base on experience what difference does it make we still are in trillions of dollars in debt, homeless people sleeping under bridges and to make it worse most are those whom have fought in wars for this country, children dying because parents can afford proper health care, jobs being ship over sea for cheap labor which is further tearing  our economy down and the list can go on but needless to say this is all being done at the hands of the experience ones or lack there of since Hilery has lied about 90% of her experience.  So you tell me what is a good american or the standards in which it is set. We have a freedom of speech just as those who where calling blacks Nigers and the other saying if he was elected that muslims would be dancing in the streets (not exact words) that is whats wrong with us here in America double standards and I am proud of the youth getting involve to help make the changes needed so that we can once again stand strong together and to help mend the division.
Patty, I see your comment as very unwarranted and contradictory. He won't be running for President if he's anti-American. You can't visit the iniquity of one person over another. Afterall, he's not a pathological liar like some other.......Be more objective!

Independent 08
Apparently, the kitchen sink strategy wasn't enough.  Next up, the Tonya Harding strategy.  What are the super-delegates and party "leaders" doing as the Clinton goons are readying their lead pipes?
Let me get this straight, some superdelegates are unhappy with Clinton's campaign.  So what, I'm sure that some of them are unhappy with his.  If the Democratic National Committee takes any action before the convention then they are doing exactly what Obama and his followers said that they didn't want to happen.  Superdelegates should not determine this election.(their opinion early on in the process), but they should now?

Based on the rules of the DNC which Obama says he will follow state that delegates are pledged to support a candidate based on the primary elections unless they have a moral obligation to vote differently.  So if the superdelegates decide in June to support Obama, they have the right to do so, but equally, the elected delegates can vote for whomever that want to at the convention.  What if the delegates from states that are pledged to Obama decide because of events that happen after their states voted decide to go the other way?  The nearness of the race could then be reestablished.

If the DNC is worried that the convention is too close to the election to allow time for the nominee to campaign against the Republicans, they have no one to blame but themselves, they set up the convention date.  The convention should be the last week in June if they want to select the nominee the way it is really required if they follow the rules.  There is no nominee until the convention elects them.

The DNC is the only one to blame if there is a brokered convention because they let a Republican congress and governor get away with passing the primary date to a time when the DNC said their delegates would not count,(talk about cutting off you nose to spite your fate)and then punish the voters who have no say in when the primary is held.  If someone did not vote in the primary when it was held, then they are not voting to state their preference, but only to win.  A true patriot will vote when it is set by law even if they know their vote will not count otherwise, why would anyone in a state vote after the nominee has been chosen.  You do not stop a race halfway through because someone is ahead.  If the leader trips up and falls and everyone has quit, you are still stuck with a flawed result.  Let the political process continue.

Lets have a real debate on the issues.  Ask each candidate to tell their position on an issue, and then have them give the plan on how that plan will be accomplished.  How do we save medicare? (give specific proposals and how it would be paid for).  Can not just say "we will save medicare"

I don't see much in the way of specifics from the debates we have had, just a bunch of sound bites.  Ask real questions, not just questions to either bolster a side on to trip up a candidate.  LETS GET REAL AND DISCUSS SPECIFICS.  (I dare you).
I have on occasion read some of these blog entries. Many are not necessarily my opinion, but they are well-written and offer insight. However, having said that, there are a few - Patty,sd,ca, for an example who seem to only want to spew hate, bigoty and racism. Because we have 1st Amendment rights, she is allowed to write these statements. But I ask: Anyone who wants to give an opinion, please educate yourselves fully on whatever issue it is you rant about. And please check spelling and grammar. Thanks.
Here's the Clintons' next big spin.  After they have lost, and they will, they will say they were playing DIRTY to give Obama "a right good vetting" before he goes on to the general election.  Then they will go to the McCain campaign headquarters and pick up thier checks for being McCain campaign aides.  Then they will go the DNC and demand they both be  selected as vice-presidents because they deserve it for being such good Democrats.
Patty,sd,ca,
What make Obama a racist? Rev. Wright? Because if his ties to his former pastor make him a racist, then just about every white american is a racist for their ties to their ancestors, also America itself is racist for it ties to past racial injustice. How crazy does that sound!! Look you can support Clinton without spreading the lies that her campaign is putting out. Or maybe just maybe, what you are saying is that you would never vote for an African American, now does that make you a racist? I'm warning all Americans, black and white, Hispanic and Asian, be careful with race issues, the last thing we need in this country is a racial explosion, because the America we love will never be the same. Look around the world where racial wars are going on, they are very unstable dangerous places, just look at Iraq.
"I'll take McCain over Obama ANY day ANYTIME. Idon't want a racist, Anti-American for President."

I don't see how comments like these get posted all the time from this particular individual. Saying Obama is racist and anti-American demonstrates an appalling depth of ignorance that is frightening in its scale.

Please be specific about how Obama is anti-American or racist. Please explain why when viewed in its proper context, your example proves your point. Your comments have consistently been nothing but vitriol and uniformed drabble so its time to put up or shut up.
To Patty,sd,ca: You have got to be the most ignorant person on this blog. Why don't you just give it up? You obviously have no integrity, common sense or intelligence. You don't know the definition of racist. Remember Obama is half white and was raised entirely by that side of the family. Why don't you go do something productive with your life?

Patty,

If you don't want a racist for President, don't run.
Ignorance must be bliss, especially in the case of the so-called sd, Patty, CA. Can you explain what undeniable evidence you have, that can prove your idiotic conclusions you have made.  Just because you heard 30 sec. of a sermon, which I'm pretty sure that you've never heard the rest of speech.  It's very disturbing that someone appointed or elected you this position.
Last week, Dean Snyder, the senior minister at the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington D.C. -- which the Clintons famously attended while in the White House -- released a little noticed statement offering a sympathetic defense of the totality of Wright's work.

"The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times," Snyder wrote. "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize."

Hillary's own former pastor is even trying to get America to look past the caricatures of Rev. Wright so widespread by extremist right wing media. C'mon America, we're too smart to be fooled into believing these sound bites somehow equate to Obama being a racist or having any such negative views about any Americans. Those people out there that fall for such non-sense are simply the ones who weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.
Being a newly registered Democrat, I have become very concerned about the negative attackes between our two top candidates. We as Democrats have to demand our two top candidates stop the negative attacks and focus on how to win the White House. So much negative attacks will diminish our chances of winning the White House. Stop the negative attacks and start the positive visions and hopes and dreams for our country. I am afraid all the negative tactics will send McCain into the White House! McCain's campaign can just wait for the Democratic candidates to destroy each other. So please stop the in-fighting. Please focus on issues that will inspire America again!
Go Hillary; take their advice and move on and forward.  My prediction:  Hillary for President and Obama for Vice President.  He will do it that way for his mom who raised him and for his two daughters.  Hillary will be ontop to right all the wrongs done to her over the past twenty years by the right-wing concrete block, afraid of change.  That ticket will beat McCain by a long-shot, and assure the Democrats be in power for a good twelve years.
My opinion, for what it is worth, popping up to me after reading the above.  The last line said it all.
I'll take McCain over Obama ANY day ANYTIME. Idon't want a racist, Anti-American for President.

The reason why we have George Bush is because people like you. Now who's racist, Anti-American. You would vote for a republican all because your girl didn't win. How stupid is that..God help us because we have alot of idiots in America.
So Patty wants an ancient, war loving Bush clone? She must really have enjoyed the past 7 years.
I think Mrs. Clinton should drop out of the race before she ruins her career completely.  We need a Democratic candidate and get on with electing a president.
I think that last comment proves that Clinton's tatics are divisive and that she cannot unite the democratic party or this country.  No one has control over what another human being has to say.

I think that Obama or Clinton should be judge on their message, policies, and agenda.  If we are going to make a selection based on an individual's personal life, I think none of them will get elected.  All of them have character flaws or something in their past that we may not like or agree with.

I think how they respond in times like this shows the country what type of leader they will be.  I think Obama or his campaign has changed a little under pressure.  He has moved away from the issues too much in my opinion.  I think he should ignore the side bars and drive the message of change right on into the White House.

Clinton lost me long time ago with her desperate actions to secure the nomination.  Her actions show that she is willing to destroy the party to win.  Her strategy appears to be "If I don't win, then nobody wins." She purposely killed the idea of a joint ticket by insulting Obama with the offer to be her Vice President after saying that he wouldn't make a good Commander-in-Chief.  She has shown no humility.  She thinks that she is entitled to the Presidency because her husband was the President.  If I was a SD, I certainly wouldn't be bullied into to voting for her.

The one moment she did let us in to see another side of her (warm and caring) during the Texas debate (I think) has been tarnished by her latest desperate acts to win the nominations.  I don't think she should give up but I think she should show a little more class and run a campaign that she can be proud of at the end regardless of the outcome.

The American People 08
clinton is a liar liar pants on fire....she can go back to thrashing it out with bill...

she is a sorry excuse for a female running for president..all ambition, little intelligence, narcissitic view of herself and washington...

suffice it to say...she is the LEAST likeable democrat..blech
obama a "uniter" i can see that in his back ground,he received that gift from his pastor.
At a time like this, it does not make sense to me why some superdelegates are still not coming out to endorse.

Could it be because they are waiting for an opportunity to make backroom deals that they hope to benefit from?

Or perhaps they privately support Clinton and are waiting to see if she can somehow win the popular vote before coming out?
Hillary is an angry, hateful person that people simply do not like or trust.  She should stop showing us that fake over bite smile and telling lies (e.g., sniper fire) and step aside for the Dems best and brightest hope, Obama.
Patty, to say Obama is a racist is just ignorant.   You don't deserve to vote until you educate yourself a little more.  You have passed the "ready to vote" test yet.
I WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN AS WELL IF OBAMA GETS IN ANYTIME.  HILLARY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN HELP THIS COUNTRY. OBAMA IS A RACIST AND A MUSLIN. OH WASN'T IT MUSLIN'S WHO FLEW PLANES INTO THE TWIN TOWERS. HE IS FOOLING ALOT OF PEOPLE. WAKE UP AMERICANS!!!!
Patty,

Throw away your democratic party principals. Vote for war, corporate profiteering, and the destruction of the middle class. GO!

Your one of them anyway.....
Patti, above, is the type of ill informed democrat that the party needs to re-educate, her opinion cannot be the product of serious in depth review of Obama's positions and history, because the racist charge would show itself to be jaw droppingly wrong,  but instead she relies on the media's spin through selective sound bites.  Thoughtful voter indeed.
Keep your eye on the the economy and how banks are being bought for dirt cheap. Clinton supported NAFTA and destroyed 1 million jobs in penn state. The Write story is to distract you from those two things.
Patty wake up and smell the coffee....you would openly support a lier? .... what does that say of your morales and or character?....show real honest to goodness PROOF that Obama is a Racist and is Anit-American.....heres the rub....YOU CAN'T!
Steve from Beautiful Oklahoma
Patty, that's a disturbing comment.  Has Obama said ANYTHING "anti-American"?  Has Obama said ANYTHING that says he is not patriotic?  Isn't Obama's very own mother white!?!  Is your claim that Obama dislike's his own mother?  I pray that we as an American people do not fall into the hype and try to analize this situation a bit further.
I'll take McCain over Obama ANY day ANYTIME. Idon't want a racist, Anti-American for President. Clinton 08 Patty,sd,ca (Sent Wednesday, March 26, 2008 6:06 PM):

Ghhezzzzzz! Go away patty will you.

Of course the Supers are turned off by the Clinton tactics. Not only the attacks against Obama but the attack against Richardson by Carvelle likening him to Judas as well as her camp's (and Bill's) recent tendancies to praise McCain.

This race will be over after the North Carolina and Indiana primaries where after counting the delegate distributions from PA, NC and Indiana Obama will have maintained his delegate lead. If Hillary does not concede then the Supers will step in at that time. So watch for a May 7 or May 8th concession by Hillary.
Obama no more a racist anymore than Hillary is honest.  Some of you are being hood-winked by Clinton dirty politics and are falling victim to her evil master plan!

Please, please, superdelegates end this hurt to the democratic party that Hillary is doing!  We want Obama for our President! "Yes We Can!"
Time for the party to stop the Republican Clinton campaign against the Democratic nominee.  The chicanery of the Clinton campaign will effectively destroy what little unity remains, if they are allowed to persist in this vast right wing smear campaign they're running against our party's choice.  Time for the leaders to stand up against these machinations.
EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO BLOG FOR HILLARY ARE DESPERATE AND WILLING TO DESTROY THE PARTY IN ORDER FOR THEM TO WIN (SEE COMMENT FROM PATTY, SD,CA).  THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH A PERSON WHO IS THAT SELFISH AND WILLING TO WIN AT ANY COST.  I REALLY HOPE SHE DOES VOTE FOR MCCAIN BECAUSE THAT MEAN SPIRITED ATTITUDE DOES NOT REFLECT DEMOCRATIC VALUES.
I think it is a fair assesment to make  Obama is not electable. He says judgement instead of experience well:Resko,Ayers,Nafta lie about meeting,Iraq lie in speech.Wright.Wright is not only reason for poor judgement letting hois children hear this talk all there lives does not help overcome race. The big reason about Wright also isnt just judgement but Anti American ,Racist, divider, and his wife's views are same as pastor. All in all I will vote McCain and not just a little threat.
This "desperate-to-win" side of Hillary has always been there; the Clintons cannot change their stripes. They will stoop to whatever tactics they will to get back in the White House, and in doing so destroy the Democratic Party.  Hillary is now "owed" the White House.  The sooner she realizes that, the better off the Democratic Party will be.
Hillary ?  One lie is enough, how many others has she told.  I thought I was going for Hillary, but I can't stand a liar, cheat, sneak or imposter. It's Obama for me.  I want someone with some credibility, Obama has shown that.  Hillary hasn't.

I used to think that either would be a great choice for the party. However great a politician or policy maker Hillary is, she's also a liar and a person who will do anything to win this election. That in itself tells me she's not thinking of me as an everyday less than middle class voter who would like to see a better government working for me and people like me. She's divisive and manipulative. And by the way Patty in SD, CA I don't think a man who is of mixed races could be classified as a racist-less he hate himself. Its just because his skin is darker that you equate him as simply black. By the way, stop watching the tidbits of Reverend Wrights sermons and view them in their entirety before you make accusations. Be informed people!
