Clinton tactics turn off some superdelegates

Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 5:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
At a time when Sen. Hillary Clinton is increasingly relying on superdelegates to vault her to the Democratic Party's nomination, a handful of undecided and pledged superdelegates are coming forward to say her campaign's tactics in recent weeks are doing more harm than good.

The Democratic Party insiders say they believe Clinton's direct attacks against Sen. Barack Obama in recent days are hurting the party and its chances in November, and also say it is showing a calculated, desperate-to-win side of Clinton that they dislike.

"In looking at the manner in which the candidates are campaigning, I think it would be best they focused their attention on the presumptive nominee and showed our party which one is better in campaigning against McCain," said Garry Shay, a California superdelegate, who announced his support for Clinton.

Unlike some in the party, these superdelegates said they do not believe Clinton should drop out of the race. They said they are committed to the democratic process, and want to allow the states still remaining to cast their ballots. But they acknowledged Obama is the likely nominee and suggested the personal attacks were only hurting the party and its viability.

The Clinton campaign has been actively wooing these delegates, believing a plurality represents the strongest, and increasingly the only, way for her to win the nomination. But one undeclared delegate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the recent tactics are turning her and other superdelegates off.

"I don't think anybody's saying 'step aside,' but 'stop with the garbage' is what people want to say," the delegate said. "Just chill a little bit."

As activists committed to the party, they said, they have been impressed by Obama's ability to bring new Democrats into the fold, and they worry that Clinton is threatening that.

"We like the fact that there is a candidate that has won so many states overwhelmingly," the delegate said. "We're feeling her advisors are leading her in a path that diminishes her as well as him."

Several said they were angered by comments from James Carville, who called Bill Richardson "Judas" for backing Obama after serving in the Clinton White House. One delegate said Richardson's rationale for supporting Obama, and his implicit frustration at the Clintons' heavy-handed approach to garnering his support, was echoed among superdelegates.

Others said they were frustrated by recent reports that Clinton embellished her description of landing in Bosnia as First Lady, and said it suggested she would do anything to win. "I don't remember what movie I saw two weeks ago; I don't necessarily remember what I had for dinner last night," one superdelegate said. "But I would remember having to duck and run from sniper fire."

The final straw, though, were Clinton's comments Tuesday, when she said the Rev. Jeremiah Wright "would not have been my pastor." Several superdelegates saw it as a direct, personal attack on Obama.

"I think it's very dangerous for any candidate to constantly thrum on what they perceive as sensational criticisms of their opponent," said Debra Kozikowski, an uncommitted superdelegate from Massachusetts. "I would be more likely to respond positively to discussions of issues that effect Americans versus what might be perceived as character flaws."

Clinton campaign officials said Clinton's comments were a direct response to a question she received at an editorial board meeting and suggested personal attacks have gone in both directions in the primary race.

The party activists said they have been receiving calls from members, a majority of whom want them to support whoever has won the popular vote. Many superdelegates are themselves elected by the Democratic Party and believe most will follow the will of party members for the party's future, and their own viability.

And they say they are not buying some of the Clinton campaign's explanations as to why they should support her, whether it is her victories in large states, primary states or those likely to go Democratic in the November election.

"Periodically, over the last couple of weeks, you will see a news story or get something from the campaign, and you'll go, 'How stupid do you think I am?" one uncommitted superdelegate said. "All of us watch television all the time, read the newspapers. We all play with the little charts online too. We know it is virtually impossible."

One delegate said the Clinton campaign is "using Jeremiah Wright to scare white people."

"A full and fair debate about issues and differences and even fights is good," the delegate said. "Mud slinging, personal attacks and lying is never good for any political fight or party. And I see a lot of that coming from one side more than the other."

The delegates said there is little the party or its leaders can do to prevent the current back and forth. But some said they were increasingly in touch with Clinton campaign officials to say their support is in jeopardy.

"Uncommitted delegates can come out and say, 'If you don't stop this now, we won't vote for you,'" one uncommitted superdelegate said.

Ok Patty,

Nevermind the fact Obama is neither racist or anti-American. His pastor said some inflammatory comments in the midst of a fiery sermon. That has nothing to do with Barack and furthermore he wasn't even there on those days (believe me all the news agencies have checked). Also, several Men of God have come to his defense of taking 30 seconds of sound bites out of a 36 year career. Please people ask yourself and be honest has any of your friends said something stupid in 36 years? What if it was recorded and then used to character assassinate you?

Barack is literally risking his life to become President to put this country on the right path. He has had more death threats than you can count. Why in the world would he put himself and his family in harms way if he didn't love this country more than life itself. The party asked him to run. He's not doing it because he feels it's owed to him or it's his turn. You are off base.

If you vote for a senile, war monger like MCcain you are only proving how ignorant I think you are.
we all have the right to vote for whom we choose but i dislike the untrue remarks relative to calling Obama a racist and anti american.  He is more american than Hillary & McCain. It boils down to White America finding excuses to not vote for a biracial person.
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton have pretty much the same strategy when it comes to the issues that impact most Americans.  They differ vastly when it comes to their behavior and attitude in election.  I am single, professional woman.  I believe in the empowerment of women, but I wouldn’t vote for Hillary.  She is too emotional.  Her focus has shifted from selling voters on her strengths to how dirty she can make this campaign.  If she is acting this way on the campaign trail how is she going to handle the White House when other politicians don’t agree with her?

Obama has dealt with some tough issues.  He is constantly being labeled “Un-American.”  If he didn’t care about this country, he wouldn’t have made an effort to improve the conditions for the people of Chicago.  He definitely wouldn’t run for President.   Through all of these daily attacks, Obama has remained calm and steadfast.  That’s the kind of President I’d like to have running this country.  I don’t want a President who overreacts to every little thing.  That’s how we ended up in Iraq.  I don’t expect my President to be perfect.  I do expect him to own up when he makes mistakes and take efforts to make things right.  If Obama isn’t the Democratic nominee, I just won’t vote.  I like his character, which is his greatest strength.   I am not going to display “cult-like” behavior.  The issues being addressed in this campaign do matter.  I will not switch my vote to McCain, who views war as a means to our end.

Please stop posting comments from "Patty" in CA/SD--they're without any basis and always pretty silly.  They sound like they're from a second grader, and that's being generous.
Why isn't anyone publicly questioning Hillary about her membership in the very conservative, mainly Republican, and secretive religious group called the "Fellowship" (Family)??? It's members include, or have included, real right wingers like former Senators Santorum (PA) and Allen (VA), he of the racist "Macaca" slur , Ed Meese, John Ashcroft, and others...she's belonged to this very conservative group for 15 years, but unlike Barack, she has NEVER been questioned about her dealings within this right-wing group...WHY NOT???????

I don't believe Obama is a racist, even after the Wright sermons. What I do not believe is why he didn't just leave the congregation sooner. I started out very committed to Hillary! It took me a very long time to even have buyers remorse for not voting for Obama in our primaries. I have finally conceded that my vote will serve better in the general elections to a presidential candidate that will bridge the gap, young and old, rich and poor, educated and want to be educated, renew our nation's reputation abroad, find a way to end our wars in foreign countries, and spark the economy to where it was for decades. I should have voted for Obama then but voted for Hillary! I still could have done worse, but do I want to just settle for a name we all know? I hope I get the chance to change that come time for our General election! So, I hope the states that have not yet decided or voted will not make the same error I made. We need change, I see the channge, and now let's all as Americans vote for the best chance of positive change. Vote For Obama!
Hillary Clinton is hateful and would do anything to get her way.  She is a liar and I finally think the superdelegates are seeing her as she is.  She is hurting the Democratic Party by acting like she is.  The longer she goes acting like this the more harm it does to the party.  Obama 08!
Obama is a uniter- Wright talk blame the typical white people only unites blacks. Judgement - friends he keeps Farrakhan,Wright, Renks,Sinclair,etc.Truthfullness- There was no meeting with canadians ok there was a meeting.Obama will not be elected in Nov. He will not be able to take a week off for vacation.Looks weak when something doesnt go his way. Will NOT vote Obama
I am a Dem. and i can tell you all this he said she said is enough i hope when we get to Denver Neither one makes it on the first ballot and we go and bring in V.P. Al Gore and John Edwards and i was supporting Obama but after his Church's pastor i don't know if i can trust him or Hillary because look who bill invited to the white house the same man that is everyone is talking about.
Hillary likes McCain.  Bill likes McCain. Hillary was on Foxnews. Rush says vote for Hillary.  I think I got it.  Hillary is an undercover Republican out to destroy the Democratic Party from within.
I would certainly love to see the super delegates shut down Mrs. Clinton's slow agonizing campaign death.  It's tough to watch.  And Patty, SD, CA...take a pill and get over it.  If you believe Sen. Clinton and support her (now) stance against this war a vote for the likes of a war monger like McCain is just spite.
Does anyone notice how Clinton supporters are convinced Obama is racist and anti-American?  One wonders if they are not really Republican shills.  It's right out of the McCarthy/Atwater/Rove playbook.  Transparently false lies repeated ad nauseum.  Notice how they'd jump to McCain if Hillary doesn't steal the nomination.  WIth firends like these....  Just what the party needs is another McCain supoorter, just like Hillary.

Ok so I can see now that Obama is untaouchable. I dont see how Clinton is "attacking" Obama in such a bad way. It just seems that everytime you question something about him or his policies it is somehow a very bad thing and "dirty" politics. Seriously if you really think this is bad wait until August. The republicans will not be as nice as Clinton has been. If Obama cannot stand the heat now and the superdelgates want to "protect" him they need to get ready for far worse things  once he is the nominee.  Personally I do not want a commander and chief who needs to be protected and cannot stand up for him or her self in office.
I am befuddled why the super delegates, who fear their party will be irrevocably damaged by the Clinton campaign tactics, don't follow the courageous and proper lead of Governor Richardson by committing to Senator Obama.  There's no plausible away for Senator Clinton to win, anyway, so why let her continue to diminish the presumptive Democratic nominee.  If the Democrats fail to win the election that follows eight years of George W. Bush, historians will be scratching their heads and the super delegates, who could have precluded such a disaster, will have only themselves to blame.
When has Obama made a racist statement Patty?  Just because your religous figure says something, are you saying that the individual says that as well.  If that's the case, then all catholics are child molesters.  That's basically how your associating this whole thing.  Clinton was caught in another lie in regards to her Bosnia trip.  Nothing she says is true and only cares about herself and winning the nomination.  She would lose to McWar and then you have 4 more yrs. of the same old, same old.  No thanks.
II see no reference to how the primaries set up for june in Puerto Rico will affect the current situation, we will have primaries that can directly impact who will run for president , but we can not vote for the Presidency.. seems kind of odd.....
I think that comments like patty's are what super delegates are worried about. If republican plants or Clinton loyalists pick up the banner of

"I don't want a racist, Anti-American for President."

then subsequently it damages the tent both candidates are under, the DNC. Bill asking to "mix it up" only deepens that divide. Patty and those like you I'd ask do you really think the last 8 yrs have been good for this country? If you say no then why continue the downward spiral out of spite? Why do you think Scarborough, Buchanan ENCOURAGE Clinton to remain in the race and continue their tactics. It helps them!
Bill Looked directly at the camera and said " Listen to me America, I don't think you heard me the 1st time. I did not have sexually relations with that woman". He did that without blinking. Now Hiliary fulls out lies about sniper fire. Not only did she lie but didn't even admit to the lie after she got caught. She blamed it on sleep issues..Are you serious???-lol- The Clintons are Liars, and what bothers me is that they do it without remorse or hesitantion. Do we really need more lies in the White House?
It's funny how people can't see or doesn't want to see how bad Clinton is messing up our party. And still have the nerve to say they'll vote for any1 but Obama. You need to look deep inside yourselfs and ask why? Is it because your in fact a closet racist and cant stand the fact of a black man being in office? After Obama wins the nomination and you go to the polls to vote for Mccain do us a favor and wear your white hoods!
I have said this more than onec that you cannot trust HRC, see below this has come up again.

After 9/11, Hillary had a problem. New Yorkers were desperately focused on their own needs for protection and they were saddled with a Senator who was not one of them -- an Arkansasn or was it a Chicagoan?

Interviewed on the "Today" show one week after 9/11, she spun an elaborate yarn. The kindest thing we could say was that it was a fantasy. Or a fabrication.

She said that Chelsea was jogging around the World Trade Center on 9/11 and happened to duck into a coffee shop when the airplanes hit. She said that this move saved Chelsea's life. But Chelsea told Talk magazine that she was in a friend's apartment four miles from ground zero when the first plane hit. Her friend called her, waking her up, and told her to turn on the TV. On television, she saw the second plane hit, disproving Hillary's claim that "she heard the plane hit. She heard it. She did."

So why did Hillary make up the story about Chelsea? Most likely to was because her co-senator (and implicit rival for the voter's affection), a real New Yorker Chuck Schumer spoke of his daughter, who attended Stuyvesant High School (Dick's alma mater) located next to the TRade Center, being at real risk on 9/11. Hillary needed to make herself part of the scene.

She invented the entire story on national television, the "Today" show, and didn't blink an eye.

Her fabrication on the "Today" show was no unique foray. It is her standard M.O.. It gives us pause in evaluating all of her stories and calls into question her entire credibility.

The woman just stands and LIE, LIE LIE.
We should not let her get away with this.
we do nit want this in the white house, she will sell us all out.
HRC is just a BIG FAT LIAR.......

Obama '08

It's a shame that Hillary can't let go of this and be the great unifier of the Democratic Party.  She could be such a hero in this and instead she chooses to tear down what she says is so important to her.  I used to be an enormous Clinton fan and I am quite disgusted by what I am seeing come from their campaign.  I saw Obama speak in Greensboro yesterday and he is what I feel this country really needs right now.  At times I have thought that I wouldn't vote for her if she somehow manages to become the nomination against all that is just, but that really wouldn't accomplish anything except keep the current policies and this war going forward.  I hope that we can all come together and unite when our candidate is chosen instead of fighting amongst ourselves and letting the Republicans walk into the White House for another 4 years.  Can't we all just get along?  We do want the same things, don't we?
Patty,sd,ca -- You should come to the same conclusion the superdelegates are reaching.  If this constant barrage of personal attacks continues...by the campaign teams and by the candidates' supporters.... it won't be "Clinton 08" or "Obama 08."  It'll be "McCain 08!"
That "editorial board meeting" was where she sat down with Richard Mellon Scaife, the man responsible for the Arkansas Project and instrumental in orchestrating the Clinton attacks. I don't think she was not aware that Scaife would sanction leading questions about Obama to provide that opportunity to answer that "direct question" and I don't think America is that dumb either. If she doesn't care who she has to use to win, I don't think she cares what the people want either.
Hillary is saying that Obama is not supporting voters right in Florida and Michigan. He doesn't care about their vote.

People in Florida and Michigan please think about this, Hillary said she believes pledge delegate are free and they don't have to vote by result of primary or caucuses.
Hillary doesn't care about the how people voted and will go after pledge delegate. Do you really think she cares about Florida and Michigan's people voting right. Hillary will do anything to win, lie, cheat & steal.
clinton is useing the tanya harding stratergy if she cant win obama wont and the democratic party will destroy sorry its the truth

Obama '08

Individual hope for personal input to the outcome of electing leaders is gone.
This race is so FIXED it is unbelievable. Democrats, of which I am one, sicken me.
Hillary would have made a good President, but we all know her chances are gone to the Almighty, ordained, crowned king whose name I cannot utter for its disturbing effect on me.
His commercials I turn off. News I will no longer watch on tv. The Internet provides me one single daily dose of "is Hillary still hanging in there and accepting this media abuse".
And every day, that ONE DOSE provides me with more stories of this outrageous man and the media equally PREENING HIM.
It is my opinion that there will be a RECORD NO-SHOW in the NOVEMBER ELECTIONS by the general public, because, if NINE OUT OF TEN OF US voted AGAINST THIS MAN, he will STILL somehow be elected.
It is ABSOLUTELY UNCANNY how this has played out.
Have you ever seen anymore serious hatred expressed
about a candidate in our country than there is about
the Clintons?(and now it includes Chelsea).  It spreads like cancer whoever is on their side.  Don't the Clintons see this? We know they are at least informed. They just want to say they don't pay attention to those things.  What in the world is it that"really" drives them?  If America would just answer that question openly to them, it would put an end to all the chaos and we could get on with the business at hand.  Let's all do what we have to do instead of chasing the fire truck.
The Clinton toxic political behaviors in this campaign sadly remind us of a spectacle of impeachment, lies, distortions, revenge, issues of right-wing conspiracy, and gross immorality.

I'm no Clinton fan, but Obama's won 'overwhelmingly'? Super Delegates, more like Super Stupid!
The sooner the Superdelegates step in and end this fiasco of a race Sen.Clinton is running, the sooner the Democratic party can unite and fight against Sen.McCain come November.

As one reporter said of the Democrats "if we can't win an election coming off the most unpopular President of all time AND an unpopular war - when can we win?"

The time for the Dems is NOW. Go into the future with Obama.
It is amazing how we can label people.  Obama is not a racist, he is the only candidate in a long time that has awakened the American people, young people to the election process.  John McCain is riding off of being a prisoner of War.  And if he is elected he will be a senile, alzheimer President like Ronald Reagan was by the time he left office.  He looks like a walking ghost.

I will vote for Obama, but not Clinton.  he is  maniacally obseeesed hypocrite who ewilo cheerfully destroy her party to win the nomination.  What makes anyone think that this sort of person is fit to run the country.  I will vote straight Republican if she runs.
#1:It is flat out cowardice for the Democratic leadership to remain silent, while these two camps beat each other up, and allow John McCain to look increasingly presidential without challenge. C'mon...show some stones, and impose a moratorium RIGHT NOW on ALL negative campaign tactics from ANYONE associated with each camp (r ya listening Howard?.
#2: The Democratic party would be stupid beyond the wildest Republican dreams to essentially override the will of the majority viz-a-viz the Superdelegate process. Break out your abacus and accept the math...unless it comes out Obama has a two-headed livestock lovechild, he should win the popular vote, and become the top-of-the-ticket candidate for the party. Start acting like you can add, and publicly and enthusiastically support the guy!

#3: I think it's past time for the Democratic leadership to either privately or publically drive creation of an Obama/Hillary ticket, or get a committment from Hillary (and Bill) to graciously step aside and support whatever running mate Obama and the party leadership puts forward
My hope is that the SD will start to come out and show the Clintons that their time has come and gone, let the new generation have the chance to change the way government is run as we all know it does not work now with all the lobbyist running it.
The most important thing should be the unity of the democrats, the unity of the races and the unity of all Americans. Instead of the politics of desperation and fear, we yern for the politics of hope and substance, the politics of the real issues and not the side issues. OBAMA IS REAL!!!
I think you been drinking way to much koolaid.
@Lynn: If the superdelegates truncate the race voters in states that haven't yet voted will feel slighted. IMHO the SD should have remained quiet the whole time until all the primaries are over, but that horse when out the barn when they fell for Clinton's "aura of inevitability".

@Patty: Not helpful. You really believe Obama's a racist? Based upon what exactly? Because you saw 30 seconds of crap out a man who is not even running for president's 30+ year career.

Your attitude is exactly what the superdelegates are talking about. Clinton is insisting upon poisoning the well, and any clear eyed realist in the party knows she's not going to win. I would encourage you to take a moment to really think about your decision dispassionately. Just breathe, take a week or two after Clinton loses to ponder what happens when McCain replaces Justice Stevens with Scalia 2.0. That said. I don't think anyone in their right mind is concerned about either of the Dems losing California in the General Election.
There is no way in my mind I could rest easy at night knowing this "woman" would be in charge of this country. Thank God, the super delegates will rally behind Senator Obama because at least he has integrity whereas Hillary does not even know the meaning of the world. How in the hell do you think being First Lady gives you experience as the "Commander & Chief"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
