NBC-WSJ poll: New Clinton lows

From NBC's Chuck Todd
As expected, one of the two major Democratic candidates saw a downturn in the latest NBC/WSJ poll, but it's not the candidate that you think. Hillary Clinton is sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign. Moreover, her 37 percent positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001, two months after she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York.

The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday this week by Hart-McInturff and surveyed 700 registered voters, which gives the poll a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent. In addition, we oversampled African-Americans in order to get a more reliable cross-tab on many of the questions we asked in this poll regarding Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race and overall response to last week's Rev. Jeremiah Wright dustup. (Watch Tim Russert's analysis of the poll results.)

On that issue specifically, 32 percent of voters overall said Obama "sufficiently addressed the issue," while 26 percent of folks believe he needs to address the Wright controversy further; 31 percent did not see the speech or had no opinion.

Interestingly, of those voters who said they saw the speech, 47 percent said Obama sufficiently addressed the Wright issue while 37 percent said he needs to address it further. Among whites, 45 percent were satisfied with Obama's explanation, 38 percent were not. Among blacks, 67 percent said the speech was sufficient, while 25 percent want him to address it further.

Overall, 55 percent of voters told us that they were "disturbed" by the videos of Wright that circulated so widely on cable TV and the Internet.

As for the damage this controversy did or didn't do to Obama, it's a mixed bag. Yes, Obama saw some of his numbers go down slightly among certain voting groups, most notably Republicans. But he's still much more competitive with independent voters when matched up against John McCain than Hillary Clinton is. And he still sports a net-positive personal rating of 49-32, which is down only slightly from two weeks ago, when it was 51-28. Again, the biggest shift in those negative numbers were among Republicans.

On one of the most critical questions we've been tracking for a few months, Obama showed resilience. When asked if the three presidential candidates could be successful in uniting the country if they were elected president, 60 percent of all voters believed Obama could be successful at doing this, 58 percent of all voters said McCain could unite the country while only 46 percent of voters said the same about Clinton. All three candidates saw dips on this issue, by the way. In January, 67 percent thought Obama could unite the country; 68 percent thought McCain could do it; and 55 percent said Clinton would be able to pull it off.

The fact that all three dropped equally in the last three months is a sign that the campaign is becoming more ideological and partisan.

In the head-to-head matchups, there weren't huge shifts in the numbers, with Obama and Clinton dead even at 45 percent in the national Democratic primary matchup (a slight increase for Obama from early March). In the general-election matchups, Obama led McCain by 2 points, and McCain led Clinton by 2 points; all margin of error results and nothing to get too excited over.

One thing about these head-to-head matchups: Our pollsters found that for the second poll in a row, more than 20 percent of Clinton and Obama supporters say they would support McCain when he's matched up against the other Democrat. There is clearly some hardening of feelings among some of the most core supporters of both Democrats, though it may be Obama voters, who are more bitter in the long run.

Why? Because among Obama voters, Clinton has a net-negative personal rating (35-43) while Clinton voters have a net-positive view of Obama (50-29). Taken together, this appears to be evidence that Obama, intially, should have the easier time uniting the party than Clinton.

Considering the doom-and-gloom some predicted for Obama with regard to the Wright controversy, the overall tenor of the electorate appears to still be favorable for him. He's mortal, but he's survived ... for now. It's not clear whether he'd be this resilient if another controversy exploded as big as Wright, but it appears that voters are giving him the benefit of doubt. There's lots of evidence inside these numbers that voters still would like to know more about Obama, and that is both an opportunity and a potential obstacle.

While the words that came from Wright's mouth were very disturbing, those words were Wright's words, not Obama's. The association there is a bit scary.
On the other hand, Clinton's words aobut Bosnia were her own, and they were out right lies. I find that very scary.
Why don't you do a poll now that oversamples the white blue collar population or white progressive women?  It does not seem fair to produce a poll like this and then announce to everyone that Clinton is the one who has been hurt by all of the recent controversy with Obama's pastor.  The reason I don't think it seems fair is because you oversampled the African-American population which you in the media are always saying gives Obama an advantage in anything.  I understand that you feel you need to do that about the pastor situation, but in terms of bragging now to all the news shows and media outlets how Clinton's positive views are so low and her negative views are so high from the sampling of your poll, that is what I have a problem with.  Why wasn't the fact that you oversampled the African-American population in the reports being given on television last night by Chris Matthews or this morning on Morning Joe?  I just feel the pastor problem is probably still on the minds of several groups, including the blue collar worker, the white progressive woman, or the average middle-class person.  I may be wrong, but it would only be fair to do the same type of poll again with an oversampling of these core groups if that was the whole idea in the first place for doing such a poll.
Play dirty and you get dirty and people do not like a dirty person.
Is anybody else getting tired of all the back and forth crap going on?  I told myself that I wouldn't watch the news everyday because its the same stories day in and day out. I am undecided because both parties haven't been totally honest so its hard to decide..Do we chose Clinton (A person that is doing and saying what ever she feels is necessary to win) or Obama (A person that has little experience and actually is falling into the trap of old politics) very hard to decide all I know is that I will not vote for Mccain.
I'm not surprised. The Clinton's have lied so much just to gain power, they don't know the truth from fiction anymore. Hillary was convinced the public forgot. And you wonder why she's slipping in the polls?
The destruction of the Democrat Party, because two idiots, would rather destroy it, than behave like adults. Everyone fears another four years of REPUBLICAN GARBAGE, but the two Morons, Clinton and Obama will fight like school yard children until the REPUBLICAN agenda is realized. The big losers will not be Clinton or Obama, but it will surely be the citizens of America SAD SAD SAD "AND SICK"

I think these popularity polls would go "dancing with the stars" in all directions if Obama would select an important clinton supporter or if clinton would select an obama person as their V.P. candidate. I lke clinton but if obama names Biden or dodd or edwards i could go for the ticket. My first vote was for Truman and the things that were being said about him makes clinton look like choir girl. matbe people dont like her as aperson but she is a hell of a fighter and workerand I would like her to represent me in a fight or argument. with all the crap being heaped on her by the media she is still in even status with obama and mccain in the polls. let the battle continue until june.may the strongest candidate win.
Listen, these polls don't mean much right now. I believe all democrats will come together in the end in the general election. It's just heated right now because both sides feel very passionate about their nominee. I personally like Barack, but if Hillary (in a fair way) wins the nomination. I'll suck it up and vote for her.
President Barrack Hussane Obama  UN-AMERICAN Not a good fit. So the ideal here is since we can't beat them JOIN THEM.  What a world

As the presumptive frontrunner Hillary started with the support of the majority of Democrats. Obama had to earn his supporters one by one;
his made a conscious decision to chose him over her. They are converts with the loyalty converts usually show. Many of her followers, on the other hand, have not necessarily made a similar conscious decision and therefore are more open to considering Obama.
I just don't get it!? It's quite okay to sulk a little when your champion looses out on the nomination, but it's complete foolish and utterly dumb to go vote for the complete oposite - a Republican - out of pure spite. What sane person would do that when the chances for their party to take all haver never been so good!?
The media didn't spend this much time trying to discover the "real" George Bush and when Hatfield put out his book trying to warn people about who the man really was, Hatfield was attacked by the media.

I don't care what skeletons of little merit are in Obama's closet. They don't begin to compare to what Clinton is hiding nor is Obama teaming up with the scum associated with Scaife in order to trash his opponent.

I don't want four more years of Bush and I will not vote for Clinton if she is nominated (Glass-Stegall repeal and NAFTA are bitter memories) nor will I vote for McCain.
The media spends each day/night portraying Hillary as a spoiler, she should get out of the race, she is trying to "destroy" Obama, she'll do or say anything to win, etc etc and on and on and on and then acts surprised that her negatives have gone up?

I am not sure what I despise more.....politicians or the "journalists" that cover them.
MSNBC, We all know that you love Obama and Rev Wright!!! You constantly give them both the benefit of the doubt. Too bad you cant be fair and balanced and do the same for McCain and Clinton. You guys used to be my favorite news organization but now your just the "gutter news"!!!!
Those Clinton numbers probably reflect her "win at all costs" mentality/sense of entitlement/constant rationalizing and increasing appearance of an inability to tell the truth. To be clear, Obama has "Gone Negative" as well at times (the Wal-Mart comment at the debate comes to mind), but not to the same extent as the Clinton "spin machine" where one hand, the only states that count are the ones with primaries and are not predominantly Black and are already "Blue" and can be easily expected for a Democrat to win, while on the other hand, Michigan and Florida voters are so very "disenfranchised" that a change in the PRE-ESTABLISHED RULES is vital.
I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message.
why, Why, WHY is the whole focus of this article on the Wright controvery and the fallout that DID NOT happen as expected?  How about a little more analysis of why Senator Clinton's favorable ratings dropped like a stone.
This poll...and alot of other polls are bogus!

Everyone knows MSNBC doesn't like Clinton and they will go as far as scewing the polls to help their boy Obama.

More blacks were sampled in this poll than whites, and its been this way with MSNBC polling since January.

Other polls want to keep it close because it helps with ratings and they favor their boy Obama.

A word for the media.....be careful what you ask for.
It's appauling that Americans don't wake up and smell the coffee. This poll shows Obama as the great uniter still. I can't imagin how someone who sat in a congretion under Rev. Wright for 20years, was married by him, and had his kids baptized by him, could possible unite this country.  Obama can do damage control all he wants, but you cannot change the fact he was under this man's leadership for 20 years.  If you didn't agree with what someone had to say, you wouldn't sit and listen to it for 20 years, simple as that.  Obama's "mentor" spews antiAmerican and racist speach.  Uniters normally aren't people who call a known racist and anti-American person be their "mentor".  This country will get nowhere by oppressing ourselves which is what people like Rev.Wright do. And it all comes back to Obama's 20 year relationship with him. I wanted to believe in Obama as much as anyone else but the problem is his history with this man and church, and his actions.  He gives speaches on how the wealthy need to give to the poor.  His tax return indicates he: a-barely gives for his income level and b-doens't even give to the poor at that.  His largest donations were to Rev. Wright's church, a dance compnay and the Congressional Black Caucus! He and his wife portray this history of struggle. Their lowest joint income was $240,000!  That's about $200,000 above the average American... oh but they couldn't pay their student loans... right... They are all liars! and they are fooling the uninformed American.
I hope we can get back to the real issues in the campaign.  I don't see Hillary doing anyone any favors with her negativity, but it is her only shot.  I don't think she has it in her to be cordial or realistic and her arrogance will continue to hurt her. She gave the republicans some great footage recently with her sleep deprivation that could play well against her 3:00 am commercial if she gets that far.
while disturbed by wright's comments, he's just some pastor that obama may or may not have given much weight. it's a problem, but his speech addressed the issue much better than her continued lying. even hillary supporters are having to face the fact that she lied her a** off, which is normal for her. she's old school politics of deney and lie.
I competely support Obama, but I do believe that the negative campainging, from both sides, if affecting the Dems. We should be attacking McCain not each other. Our goal is to win in November.
Of course this hurts Clinton more than Obama. Obama can do no wrong and everything that happens is always blamed on Hillary. If Obama gets the nomination, and he loses to McCain, Hillary will be blamed for that, I'm sure.

And Tim Russert hates Hillary; Meet the Press for example, which I used to watch has now turned into Sunday Morning of Hillary bashing...wonder if this comment will even be posted...
How do you give someone the benefit of the doubt who has been close to this man for 20 years??!?!?!  Those CD's were available from the church because they best represented who Rev. wright is.  Obama definitely heard that venom, even if he denies it.  He lies by denying it to save his butt.  Even if he chose to ignore it, why would you choose a man filled with hate to be his spiritual pastor?!?!?!?  he's not fully come clean why he stayed in that church.
Hillary Clinton has been doing nothing but attacking Obama with her negative and divisive comments from free-trade to Rev. Wright. Americans are tired of this type of old politics and that's why she is becoming less electable.  All Hillary cares about is getting elected by hook or crook...mostly by crook.  She is dividing the party and at the end will divide the country as well.  This is the very reason why many young people are baking Obama. He is the only one who can bring people together, regardles of the party.

Why keep beating a dead horse and let's get back to what should really matter.  It's bad enough we have to listen to the "Wind Bag" Politicians for months and months during election time.
Politicians make all these mythical promises to the voters and only deliver on about 5 percent.  On the other hand they deliver 90 percent to the businesses and individuals that get them elected.
Let's get back to our economy, bringing the troops home, medical insurance, oil and gas prices and finally a criminal investigation into Bush, Cheney and Rove's criminal acts for the last eight years.
I would also like to know why we even spend the tax payers money on the Presidential Election?  Everyone knows the popular vote has no meaning anymore. The Electoriate College, State Delegates and now we have "Super" Delegates to decide who is or isn't President.
“…but he's survived ... for now.” That ranks right up there with “…as far as I know.” and seems to reflect a general bias towards Clinton. Please explain what numbers in the data support your contention that “voters still would like to know more about Obama”. I find it amazing that you can interpret quantitative data like poll numbers to represent anything other than the poll question asked. You might as well be reading tea leaves. “…that is both an opportunity and a potential obstacle.”, so you are inferring that the more people learn about Obama, the more his unfavorable number will go up? Again, you seem to be pursuing an agenda that is not aligned with the polling data. In short, I’m saying that rather than tell readers what their interpretations of the data should be based on your own bias, how about leaving that up to them?
Here we go again with the Pro-Obama Network.

Rasmussen Reports which is most reliable because it is a complete tracking poll:

We have a History Channel, but no one has learned from watching it.The world, the United States, continue to fight, rape, and pillage. Nothing has changed, and no one cares, unless there is something in it for them. The important issues get a slight mention, while the candidates play there little child games, of tattle tailing on one another.
Stop it!Tell us what plans you have for the things that are on the minds, and hearts of the majority of the people in the world.
Stop fighting, and start talking, like the mature humans we should be.
Stop raping our children, our land, and our hard working people.  Remember the phrase: " For every action, there's a reaction." We are now living in the reaction's all the bad decisions.
Freeze the housing crises, anyone in trouble pay principal only, or interest only.Until we are stable again. Make the people who made all the money, accountable for their greed. Re-negotiate the loans to meet the income, and means of the family, but not the people who purchased houses for quick profit, or speculation.
Bring back the WPA, and put people to work ( in Lew of handing out free money for doing nothing.) to rebuild our infrastructure, like sewerage treatment plants, that are dumping millions of gallons of raw sewerage in our oceans. Fix the bridges that are getting ready to collapse. Build a fresh water network to channel water from known flood regions to drought areas.
Close the boarders, and adopt the thumb print identification, for everyone, as they do in California this technology to access the Internet, so we can identify stalkers, hackers, and scammers.
These are a few of the things that should be implemented. No one wants Big Brother, but as the world shrinks and bad people continue to get away with crime's. A  high tech policing policy is needed.
I'm not surprised that all the bickering is hurting Hillary more. It was only a matter of time before people realised who was the main cause of the disunity in the Democratic party. Her "win-at-all-costs strategy which included just stopping short of endorsing John McCain, (she said both her and JOHN McCAIN would be ready on day 1-Obama wouldn't thereby bolstering a Republican at the expense of a fellow Democrat), then soliciting Obama as a vice-presidential running mate (Mr. "not ready on day 1") rightfully made her come out looking like the most confused and disoriented of the bunch. I understand that in a political campaign things get said and done by aides and supporters that aren't "necessarily" supported by their respective candidates, and therefore we can't hold the candidates directly responsible for them, (although it's easier to do so if they don't seek immediately to denounce and distance themselves from the remarks), however things said and done by the candidates are their responsibility, thus they can be held directly responsible for those. If Hillary feels so confident about a John McCain presidency then perhaps she doesn't really care about ending the war in Iraq, reforming health care, or ending tax cuts for big business/ wealthy 1 percenter's- things that define today's Democrats. This now raises the question of her dedication to the party for it seems that for Hillary it's more important that Hillary wins in November than it is that the Democratic party wins in November. I've never heard of a Republican candidate supporting a Democratic candidate at the expense of a fellow Republican (even Romney and Huckabee didn't go that far).
More BS from the obama network...Get a job Todd!!!Other polls show diff results..
Interesting numbers. I'm sure we'll see Penn spin this into an argument about how she's more electable and thus is entitled to the nomination.
This doesn't surprise me at all.  Never voted in a Democratic primary till this one.  I even stayed to caucus and I'm a delegate to the senate district convention.  Obama's speech was good enough for me.  As far as Hillary, I had my mind made up about her a long time ago, but still laughed my a** off watching that CBS story about "snipergate"!
Poll says that 28% of Clinton supporters will vote for McCain if Clinton isn't the Democratic candidate while only 18% of Obama supporters will go over to McCain. Yet another reason offered up to disregard the primaries. That poll doesn't consider the massive support that Obama is getting from Independents and disaffected Republicans that would otherwise vote for McCain. Clinton will get none of this support.
Watch her UNfavorable ratings climb even more in the coming months as she drags this one out. She is not only stuborn, but also stupid.
i think that obama would be the best president that america will ever have
Sen. Clinton has proven again that she cannot be trusted.  We have troops that are in real life danger every day.  When she "misspoke" I feel she was not taking seriously the real dangers our troops abroad are facing daily.  It seems that she continuously proves she will do anything to get nominated.
Obama 08
I think Hillary should focus on the issues and stop pretending she has skills that exceed her actual resume. If she did this the public would be more likely to listen and form an opinion based on the plan she intends to implement. At present she playing the "i got more experience than you " game. And not being so honest about her experience. With the family history of scandals, lies and political troubles, she should stick to what she can bring as an individual, and avoid finger pointing.
come on people who can not see that this man is going to ruin our country? his father have terrorist connections, he himself is photoed in a turbin. his wife hates america. his pastor says GOD DAMN AMERICA and he is still supported by obama. what more do you people need to see that he is anything but bad for our country?
Polls? I see no upside to any of this given the choices. On one hand your have a man running for president whos success to date is best described as a "cult of personality" whos mentor is a racist African American.
on the other hand you have a woman running for president who can best be described as a bald faced liar...I dont see how polls can help either one of them..or us.The lesser of two evils is hardly a choice.
The only question I have is...How could Hillary Clinton, or anyone, say things that are not true when there is documentation stating the true facts(The case I am talking about is the film coverage of her getting of the plane and having to run because of gun fire, so she says)? Did she not see the media at the airport? Look..Both candidates have some past problems that are now haunting them, but Hillary out and out lied. Why??!!!
I duck my head and run for cover everytime a Clinton speaks.
Voters are displaying a fair degree of reasonableness
over the Wright controversy. They appear to realize that guilt by association is not the way we do things
in the USA. Naturally Republicans view the flap with some consternation, but they, too, will settle down and be reasonable. I believe in my fellow Americans.
Common, stop now with your polarized polls.Stop downplaying these pastor's daily comments,if BO is the democratic nominee,it is going to hurt us in November big time.I know  why you are down in the ratings, it is not going to work with real democratic voters.
"In addition, we oversampled African-Americans in order to get a more reliable cross-tab on many of the questions we asked in this poll regarding Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race and overall response to last week's Rev. Jeremiah Wright dustup."

WOW talk about wanting the polls to slant one way. How can this poll be seen as unbiased when you  select a larger number of one race than the other. Seriously this is not a legit poll and these number are just being used by the media to push the election in one direction. I cannot believe how one sided MSNBC is.

Of course everytime I write something that points out an obvious and blatent support for Obama from what si supposed to be an unbiased media it never gets published. I know as editors and people you have an opinion and favorite but this is the just unethical to do a poll that is slanted in one candidates favor.
If this doesnt end soon.  The democrats will have snached defeat from the jaws of victory, again!

Obama's dream ticket in '08!
I find my wife and I match up well to the poll results.  I was a strong Obama supporter early in the process and my wife was a strong Clinton supporter. Clinton's nasty campaign tactics has turned my wife against Clinton and I have taken the position that if Clinton is the Dem's candidate I will vote for McCain. I still support Obama but the recent negative issues have hurt his standing with me.  The Dem's are hurting their chances in the general election by the negative campaign tactics.
