Obama: More Wright; veep preview?

Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:31 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

NBC's Andrea Mitchell reported on TODAY, "And now -- even more controversy involving Reverend Wright. An Internet search reveals church bulletins over the past year with controversial 'pastor pages' from Wright. Some reprint anti-Israel writings from a range of people -- from Archbishop Desmond Tutu to an advisor to Elijah Muhammed and Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam to Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzook.

"One of Marzook's columns, reprinted by the church from the Los Angeles Times, says: "Why should any Palestinian recognize the monstrous crimes carried out by Israel's founders and continued by its deformed modern Apartheid state?"

"Obama told the Jerusalem Post the church was 'outrageously wrong' to reprint the article, and he denounced Hamas.

"And Trumpet, a magazine run by Reverend Wright's daughters, quotes the pastor as saying: 'White supremacy is clearly in charge' in America. And slurring Italians' quote: 'garlic noses.' He also calls Jesus' crucifixion 'a public lynching Italian style.'"

"Still, Wright was praised Wednesday by the minister of the church the Clintons attended during their white house years.

"Well, I've heard Reverend Wright speak a number of times throughout the years," said the Rev. Dean Snyder, "and have the greatest respect for him as a leader."

Is this a Dem ticket preview? NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is introducing Obama today for his speech on the economy.

After his speech on the economy, Obama holds a fundraiser at Credit Suisse, one of the top subprime lenders, something the Clinton campaign believes is an example of Obama saying one thing but doing another.

The candidate gets a nice shout-out from a NYT editorial. "Obama has endorsed the best idea currently on the table to prevent foreclosure: amending the law so that troubled borrowers can have their mortgages modified in bankruptcy court."

And Obama's speech, which criticized McCain, got some pickup as well. "Obama mocked John McCain on Wednesday for urging government restraint in responding to the mortgage crisis, saying the Republican would ‘just sit back and watch’ as millions of Americans lost their homes. The back-and-forth between two of the leading White House contenders underscored the emergence of the nation's home-loan fiasco as a top issue in the presidential race."

While in N.C. to deliver his housing speech, Obama also took questions. "At Obama's town hall in North Carolina, which will hold its primary May 6, economic questions dominated -- about the cost of college tuition and the availability of health care coverage. He also fielded a question about what role religion played in his life. In response, the Illinois senator spoke at length about his faith and then raised an issue the questioner hadn't: controversial comments by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, about racism in America.

Wright's comments have been targeted because they "spoke to some of the racial divisions we have in this country," Obama said, saying the furor was a ‘distraction’ from larger issues on Iraq and the economy."

The Raleigh News & Observer lead on Obama's visit: "Obama said Wednesday that his chief rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was too closely tied to the Washington status quo to bring about change. ‘She takes more money from lobbyists and special interests than any candidate, including John McCain,’ Obama told about 2,400 people at a town hall meeting in War Memorial Auditorium. ‘That shows she doesn't have the sense that things need to change in Washington.’

“During a 90-minute speech and question-and-answer session, Obama criticized McCain's stance on the housing crisis, talked about his Christian faith and sought to downplay the provocative comments of his former pastor."

The United Chruch of Christ posted the following regarding Rev. Jeremiah Wright.  Please read it...

http://www.ucc.org/news/responding-to-wright.html

This is the white leader of the predominantly white denomination...now can we put this to bed?
Firstread Team, why bury the Bloomberg news inside the Wright story?

It appears that every statement these days has 'Wright' in it.  Also we have not seen anything on Firstread regarding Clinton's former pastor supporting Wright.
It's not a black white thing it's the religion of the left.
Erm...the article was printed from the LA TIMES, so why exactly is this a story? Did Reverend Wright author the article? NO, it was printed from the LA TIMES!!!! Jesus Christ Almiighty...the media is so lame.
This is not going away, but something is...the votes of American Jews.  We're tired of your duplicity and your lies.  You have no credibility in our community.  Why not embrace your anti-semitic/anti-Israeli beliefs?  Be true to yourself, or does lying come that naturally?  It must.  You were in Greensboro yesterday lying that you don't take money from corportate interests and lobbies.  Excelon, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, etc, their lobbies and lawyers beg to differ.

You are a liar and a fraud sir, and we've had just about enough of you.
NO STAY IN YOUR PEW SEAT, SENATOR OBAMA AN LISTEN TO THIS OUTRAGEOUS GARBAGE, BY YOUR MENTORS.YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO THE DEMOCRAT PARTY,AN IF YOUR CULT GET'S YOU THE NOMINATION,YOU WILL SURELY LOSE THE ELECTION.AMERICA IS ONCE AGAIN BEING LED DOWN THE WRONG PATH, WITH BLINDERS ON.
Ditto what End Game said . . . the Bloomberg news deserves a separate post.

P.S. Rev. Wright is not running for President.
Why are you still leading with the Wright story.

Obama's solution for the economy actually impact the American public, not writing of a retired minister.

Stopping taking the negative lead from Senator Rambo.
Did this come out of Obama's mouth/ No! Let's put this to rest.
Obama is a man of inegrity
I'm glad the media is flogging this dead horse. Every time Wright's name is mentioned, more and more people yawn. It's been shown that this has no impact in the primary and if Republicans want to use this against Obama in the fall, they're messing up because it will be oh, so yesterday by then.
FIRST READ: Where's the headline with Michelle's latest "American" statements?  You felt okay to put up something about Chelsea and leave open for about 20 hrs while people tore her apart. So, in fairness, let's hear what people have to say about Michelle. Also, it is clear to me that if you don't have some African genes, then Wright believes you are a piece of dirt and responsible for all the ills of the black race.  But, of course, Obama never heard those types of things, right?  Obama doesn't care since he himself made an outright racist statement of "typical white person". Sure strange to me that Obama has to disavow so many things that his friends say.  Again, you're known by the friends you keep.  If I rode up and down the street in the back of a pickup with everybody else in the vehicle in white sheets, what would you call me?
20 more days until "the Clintons" release their tax returns . . .

America patiently waits.
There are to many Bigots on here. This should not be about race or gender. It is about the American people We need to stop the hating and come together.

Obama in 08
Why is Wright still a relevant campaign issue? I don't get it. Obama has rejected, denounced, condemned and repudiated Wright's crazy theories. End of discussion. If pundits who keep harping on this (I'm looking at you, Joe Scarborough) are suggesting that Obama secretly believes this nonsense, then they should have the guts to say so and stop dancing around it. And if not, they should shut up and move on.

This is what is so wrong with media coverage of the elections. Fake issues like this have a life span well beyond what they ought to.
I wouldn't be that enthusiastic about an Obama/Bloomberg ticket. I think it will be important for Obama in his attempt to heal the divisions in the Democratic party caused by this contentious primary season to choose a Democrat. In fact, I'm holding out for his choosing a strong woman, like Governor Sebelius of Kansas, or Governor Napolitano of Arizona (and wouldn't the latter do wonders for immigration as an issue, and perhaps even swing AZ into the win column for the Dems, notching a dig against McCain if he can't win his home state in the general?).

Having Bloomberg introduce you when you're making a major speech on the economy just seems prudent, given his history. I wouldn't project it to a potential Veep nod.
The 'garlic nose' , etc., comments are reprehensible. Senator Obama has denounced them again, and again. Now, the media must, in all fairness, bring out into the open the damning comments of McCain's pastor, Rev. Hagee and others, whose endorsement he courted, with all the fervor with which they have chased this pariah. Then, and only then, will people appreciate how slippery-a-slope this irrationality is.

No, sorry, but this doesn't do it for me.  Now I know you will be calling me a racist, but before you do, please take a good look at the website for the Rev Wright's church.
We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.
A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
And take a good look at some of the pastor pages. (I just heard some of them have been discovered by the media)  They contain some of the same anti-semitic language.  No where on their website do they call for unity of this country.  No where do they call for all Americans to come together.

think:

You don't believe the things you type, and we don't either.

Parsing every word that Senator Obama, his wife, and his former minister says is NOT an effective strategy to solve America's problems.

When you are ready to actually "think" and not just use it as a screen name, the "new working majority" will be waiting for you with open arms - we need your help to change America!

Obama '08
Now I've seen it all - Hillary is NOW being bashed because her church minister once spoke highly of Wright. Come on, folks! Although I supported Obama in the TX primary, I'm getting damned sick and tired of the Hillary bashing going on. I used to watch Hardball religiously, but Chris Matthews and his Hillary bashing (which actually began back during the 2006 elections) and now his daily drooling over Obama has literally changed the show to the HillaryBash Hour. Jesus, give the woman a BREAK! I often wonder how torn, beaten and run out of town she would be if HER pastor ever uttered a racial slur, yet alone she back him/her up, or God forbid a film clip of her not saluting a flag or reciting the Pledge. And now you produce this statement - "Still, Wright was praised Wednesday by the minister of the church the clintons attended during their white house years." That's despicable - and you won't even give her the respect of capitalizing her name! She's not the devil that screwed this nation - our current President and his administration did that and is still doing so. She deserves just as much respect as any other candidate that's trying to clean this mess of a nation up - so BACK OFF, huh? You people have totally lost it!

Pete - Albany, thank you and you are right.  Put it to bed and move on.  Everyone, talk about the real issues, Iraq, the economy, and the future!
wright is not running for a presidency and its comments doesn't describe Obama judgements. the issue here is that the will of the will of the opposit contender is to use wright as a cross and lay obama o the cross and cruxify him.
so who will be the nailers?
is the media and fox news is seen as a pilate court
I am glad Obama is being held accountable for someone elses actions.  Nice new story..  Andrea Mitchell is so biased towards Clinton it makes her reporting skewed.  I respect her on other stories, just not this campaign season.

This is old news.  If Rev Wright were running for President I could understand digging up this trash, but it serves no purpose.  It was interesting at first, but its rather boring now.  Rev Wright has extremist views that are controversial to say the least, big deal.   Who cares, let the old man spout off at the mouth.   Lets get back to real issues versus issues of some old Rev in Chicago.   Geeze, the Press likes to stir the pot.  What about the Economy, the War, the Mortgage Crisis?

It strikes me as the height of hubris for posters to say 'we', 'us' or 'they' when talking about their own opinions.  It's as if they are claiming to talk about everyone in their demographic.  It's also interesting to see people trying to vilify an entire group since that just exposes their own bigotry.  Two examples:

This is not going away, but something is...the votes of American Jews.  We're tired of your duplicity and your lies.  You have no credibility in our community.  Why not embrace your anti-semitic/anti-Israeli beliefs?  Be true to yourself, or does lying come that naturally?  It must.  You were in Greensboro yesterday lying that you don't take money from corportate interests and lobbies.  Excelon, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, etc, their lobbies and lawyers beg to differ.

Dave, Tn (Sent Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:43 AM)

Just an observation.
I'm sure Pastor Wright and his church is only anti-Semitic on rare occasions and Italians do eat a lot of garlic so I don’t see what the problem is.  Surely after 20 years our rock star Mr. Obama hasn’t picked up any of this Black Theological Liberation stuff and it’s only the fault of those rightwing talk show people trying to be racial.  Stop it!
If we want to open this up to controversial writings in church bulletins (by Wright or anyone else), its going to be a major distractor on issues for all of us and hurt us all.  And, we're not going to learn anything from it.

At the end of the day, you vote for the person.  And Obama, the person, is still the best choice.  There is no evidence at all that he subscribes to the beliefs in any of these writings.  Yet this is what people use to tear him down!?

Bloomberg would be a great choice in a candidate, I suspect.

Obama 08
Obama-Bloomberg is a fascinating idea (and makes 'political sense' given some of the other issues raised in this post).  I'm a Clinton supporter and would be much more inclined to support Obama if Bloomberg were the VP than someone like Richardson who initially impressed me but is frankly clueless too often.  I had actually dreamed of a Clinton-Bloomberg ticket and I think Obama choosing Bloomberg would give him real credibility both in terms of reaching across the isle (sort of) and certainly on the economy.
Bring us more on this story.
"This is not going away, but something is...the votes of American Jews. "

Shtuey: I guess the Italians and "typical white persons" will be going with you. No, Obama did not make these statements. But, again, this is who he associates with.  You are known by the company you keep. If I sit in the back of a pickup with everybody else in white sheets, what do you think people would call me?  And, FIRST READ, where's the story about Michelle's latest ugly American statement?  You know, the one about stereotyping and "that's America."
i m so tired about this wright b.s. ...the media hypocrisy is glaringly obvious... if presidential candidates were guilty by association with pastors, then bush, ford, and reagan would never have made it to the white house.
"We need to stop the hating and come together. "

Yes, Michell in OR, we do. So why did Obama hang with a hate-monger, racially divisive person for 20 years? Don't hear or see or read (I have been to that church's website) pushing for racial inclusiveness, just black separtism. You are known by the company you keep. Obama tried to "hide" Wright for us for how long. Then, he tried to joke about his "crazy" uncle". Then, he lied that he never heard any such things. On Fox interview, he said he would have walked out if he had but he never did but in speech he said that he had heard controversial things.  He disavows the ugly comments in the videos; he didn't disavow ALL of Wright's ugly beliefs. obama can't do that because he apparently believes it, too, or he's just afraid of losing the black vote if he does. He's a user, a hypocrite  and the same old policitan as everybody else.  I LIKE GARLIC; I'M A TYPICAL WHITE PERSON; I LOVE PEOPLE OF ALL COLOR; I LOVE AMERICA; I WON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA.

IF HILLARY WAS NOT AWARE THAT BILL WAS HAVING AN ON-GOING, TWELVE-YEAR 'AFFAIR' WITH GENNIFER FLOWERS ... WHY CAN'T SHE BELIEVE OBAMA DIDN'T HEAR REV. WRIGHT'S OFFENSIVE RANTINGS ??????
.
Andrea Mitchell is starting to look like she works for CNN & the Clintons. This is not new news with regards to Wright's bulletin, it has already been reported by a california conservative media.

Stop trying to help your frineds the Clintons.
Okay - so I won't be voting for Obama's Pastor. It has taken a YEAR for the media and opposition research to dig up these things, and ALL they can find is his Pastor's unwise and offensive ravings.

OBAMA DID NOT SAY THESE THINGS AND OBAMA DID NOT WRITE THESE THINGS!!!!!!

NOTHING OBAMA HAS SAID OR DONE in his time as a community organizer or in his time in office has demonstrated that he agrees in ANY WAY with these writings or speeches. This has gone beyond ridiculous.

I'm listening to MSNBC right now, Obama gave a great speech on the economy and MSNBC is talking about some writings republished in the bulletins of his church - could they grasp any farther for a story? Who CARES?  WHAT does this have to do with ANYTHING? (except your ratings)

Are they next going to start looking into every one of the parishiners?

I NEVER read my church bulletin cover to cover - and I DO NOT agree with my church's opinions on everything - I go to a Catholic church, so there is a list - but that does not change the fact that the church, for all its flaws, does wonderful things in the community (help the homeless, feed the hungry...) and I support those ministries.

Any church that undergoes this kind of scrutiny is bound to come up looking like a nutty, fringe cult. MSNBC and other news organizations are making this a bigger deal than it is - it's almost like they WANT it to hurt him, it'll make a good story if it does.

Why doesn't the news look at McCain's religious backers with this kind of scrutiny? Haggey hates the Catholic church and has insulted it, Robertson blames gays for nearly everything...there - there's a start - let's see you play those clips on a loop followed by a picture of McCain embracing these people....
Give me a break!

The LA Times prints an Op-Ed piece that the newsletter editor of a Church finds interesting and reprints. Then every member of that Church is some how responsible for the ideas of the guy who wrote the article that the Editor of the LA Times printed?

Andrea Mitchell and the NBC Editors are really getting out on the wacky conspiracy fringes with this one.
Think, Have you ever been to the South side of chicago?? That's the community Trinity United Church of Christ serve. I suggest you go there---look at some of the poverty and despair in some of those neighborhoods---then let us all know what your opinion is on Trinity.
I must have missed the latest thing Michelle said. What are you all talking about fill me in, is it as bad as she has never in her adult life been proud to be an American?
Lynda
This Wright story and the distraction it is creating is precisely the reason we ended up with George W. Bush for the last eight years.

People, you are not voting for Obama's Pastor.

Now, PAY ATTENTION to the Economy, the war, healthcare...things that actually impact your life - instead of being distracted by a non-issue that has NO impact whatsoever on you.
Why is Tamaryn Hall (spelling?) not required to disclose that she attended Trinity United Church of Christ and specifically during a period in which some of the incendiary remarks were made by Reverend Wright?  She made brief mention of this fact when the controversy first erupted a couple of weeks ago, but she has not made the disclosure since.  This morning she has been strongly pushing this story without any context, which begs several questions?

1.  Why is she not required to disclose every time she reports on Reverend Wright on his church that she attended it?

2.  Why is she not required to clarify if she heard these sermons or whether the sermons she heard were indicative of what has been reported?

3.  The so-called anti-Israel remarks were in fact a re-publication of an opinion piece written by a Hamas Leader in the church's newsletter, not Reverend Wright's words. Moreover, it was not only originally published in the LA Times, but also the Washington Post and New York Times.  Are their employees guilty of being anti-Israel as MSNBC is attempting to tag Senator Obama by just belonging to the church?  Lastly, the charge "anti-Israel" is open to interpretation and should not be reported as fact or indisputable. Desmund Tu tu is one of the most respected men of the cloth around the world.  Simply because he disagrees with Israel policy he's anti-Israel?  No one is allowed to disagree with Israeli policy in a free world?

4.  She is reporting that he made disparaging remarks about Italians without noting that he was talking about ancient Romans--2000 years ago.  Moreover, the remarks were supposedly made in a printed eulogy that MSNBC does NOT have a copy of but that's being reported by a New York newspaper.

5.  Why would Jews be offended that he's blaming Romans for Christ's death and disspelling the lie that Jews killed Christ?  His language may be crass, but it is historically accurate that cruxifiction was a Roman invention and that the Romans (Italians) killed Christ.

It is incredible that this is passing as objective news coverage!
We have heard ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT WRIGHT.
MOVE ON
There is a War going on, soldiers die, others wounded!
Americans losing their homes, in enormous debt.
Wall St is crashing.  The Economy is doomed.
We need alternative source of energy.
Global Warming is real.
A country divided and you in the media carry on about a few nuts posting Rev Wright bits - never in their entirety....
MOVE ON
MOVE ON... most of AMERICA DO NOT CARE
We do not care
So now Obama is responsible for what Rev Wright's daughter thinks as well? What about his nephews' best friend's brother's girlfriend?
Americans are overseas fighting for Democracy and we have reporter's sitting in church looking for political news. The news media and Hillary's dirty campaign are turning this election into a circus. What does that say about our own Democratic process?
Okay, I get it Rev. Wright has represented some issues that will cause most white/not blacks to cringe. I do not agree with some parts of his statements, but I do not entirely disagree with others. He had a very large congregations and he maintained it in a large community and also serviced the community with some very good programs.
Tell me this, does this mean that going forward anyone on the southside of Chicago that attended this church and has politcal aspirations should be discounted, because they were a member of this church and should not run for public offices.
The question is not that he said things that alarmed a white person, but that since he has and we are aware of this we need to open a dialogue and find out how to resolve the concerns of this minister and any other ministers who share his views. We need to find ways to defuse this kind of rhetoric and make discussing black and white issues something we due out in the open and not behind closed doors.
Let's make the McCain and HRC address the issues and not the Rev. Wright, it is only a simple statement to reject a dialogue. It take a lot more courage to open up the lines of comunications.

You can't surround your self with people who spout hate and bigotry for twenty-five years and then try to pass it off as 'liberation theology'. It's 'victim theology' at the expense of your fellow man and it's time it ends, period.
Brian Cedar Hill, TX post at 9:57.  Glad to see someone else pointing out the obvious.  I didn't vote for Obama or Hillary in my primary, so don't have any huge commitment to either one. I agree MSNBC has almost gone off the deep end with their Obama support and crusade to trample Hillary.  Some friends and I were just talking yesterday how they have lost their credibility and ojectivity.  They really should be embarrassed.  I too was a Chris Matthews fan, tried to catch his show daily.  I enjoyed his laugh, his direct questions and hearing stories that spanned his career.  I stopped watching the show a couple months ago.  I can't express enough how disappointed I am in the station, but I guess I'm just a naive nobody so it doesn't really matter.  Anyway, glad to see others recognize just how obivous the Hillary bashing is and that MSNBC is leading the charge.  And MSNBC, if these blogs are truly a place for people to express their opinions, I would appreciate it if you would post this.  Thank you.
I know I am wasting my breath, but to all of those who say "Senator Obama did not say these things..."  I think you are being naive and not looking at the whole picture.  Rev Wright is the man Senator Obama calls his MENTOR.  The Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago is a dedicated to a black centered agenda.  Senator Obama has attended this church and listened to this minister/mentor for 20 years, and you do not believe this has affected his views?  You do not think this goes to who he is?  You do not think this goes to character and judgement?  Sorry, but I find the anti-everyone except blacks ideology of this church and it's minister and congregation very disturbing.  I have been to their website, read the bulletins and find NOTHING in them that is remotely a call for UNITY of all Americans.  How does someone listen to this for 20 years and not be affected by it?  I just don't get it.
Obama has his pastor problems, Hillary has her participation in the Evangelical, untra conservative, cult-like secretive "Fellowship" prayer group and John McCain has his convenient change of opinion reguarding whether Faldwell and Pat Robertson are(were) "agents of intolerence".  Not to mention the recent association with Hagee and Parsley and McCain being a member of a Southern Baptist church.  Couldn't almost all of the electorate find something to be offended by from all of the candidates' religious associations?  Perhaps we should look at the character and intelligence of the candidate.  When it comes to finding a perfect church whose ministries, preaching, and denominational believes you agree with 100% it can prove to be an impossible task.  If we assume that these candidates endorse the beliefs and statements of all religious groups and people they associate with, many of us would be left with no one to vote for in November.
I keep hearing the Obama supporters say that Obama cannot be responsible for what his pastor says.  Although Obama certainly didn't make these hate-mongering, anti-American, anti-Jewish,etc. comments, a man that is not only his pastor of 20 years, but also by Obama's own admission his spiritual advisor and mentor did.  This certainly should concern the American public.  Not once has anyone presented any evidence that Obama ever questioned the Pastor about his comments, asked him to stop making them, or indeed addressed them with Pastor Wright in ANY form or fashion.  It is only now that it has been brought to the public's attention that Obama has even rejected them.  We cannot have a President of the United States that will not defend this great country, but instead will just remain silent.  I can only hope that the news media will finally do their job and fully vet this candidate.  It is not about making Hillary look more desirable or Obama less desirable.  It is not about McCain and what some of his endorsers have said.  It is about informing the American people about who Obama is and why for 20 years he sat there and listened to this kind of speech and he has yet to answer THAT question.  We should not be told to just listen to his speeches and accept what he says.  This is not how our democracy works.  Obama wants to say "Judgment" matters and I agree.  His remaining at this church is a clear indicator of his judgment.
"I'm glad the media is flogging this dead horse. Every time Wright's name is mentioned, more and more people yawn."
Yvonne (Sent Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:50 AM)

I am also glad the media is staying on the story but for a different reason. I want to run those tapes on Rev. Wright until every person in America sees them.  Those tapes area about a lot more than Obama's campaign for president.

The tapes exemplify why we can't overcome the racial divide in this country; because Jeremiah Wright and his ilk don't WANT the racial issues to go away.  Is it, perhaps, because he, along with his brethren Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, would see his stock go down?  If we achieved racial harmony what role would they play?  They have nothing to offer beyond their pseudo protector of black rights.
I would appreciate it if you would post my previous comments I posted minutes ago.  Thank you.
