First Thoughts: Myth buster

*** Myth buster: Pollster Peter Hart calls the NBC/WSJ poll a “myth buster” survey; it really breaks down a lot of the myths we've been hearing over the last week like: (1) that the Wright controversy was the beginning of the end for the Obama campaign -- certainly not the case, but there’s no telling how much more Wright stuff comes out; (2) It was surprising how few people knew who Wright was (about half). People who followed story, though, were really disturbed (55%); (3) The premise that the Clinton campaign would turn out to be a stronger campaign or stronger among independents. (4) That the bar facing a black candidate would be higher than for a woman or a person over 70; There's a bar, but not higher; (5) That somehow this Wright story is over. If you look at it overall numbers, you can be misled. Among 29% of ALL voters, they need more answers from Obama. They have hesitations and uncertainties; they want to know, “Is he safe?” -- both in the sense of credentials/experience but also in terms of life story. The Wright controversy, the poll indicates, has taken a bit of the shine off Obama, brought him out of the stratosphere, notes pollster Bill McInturff. Clinton also faces a similar amount of uncertainties, but among a different group of people.

*** Not the one you’d think: But the poll didn’t indicate the past couple of weeks’ news hurt Obama the most; it was Clinton (sniper fire?). She’s sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign. Her 37% positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001, two months after she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York. As for the damage this controversy did or didn't do to Obama, it's a mixed bag. Yes, Obama saw some of his numbers go down slightly among certain voting groups, most notably Republicans. But he's still much more competitive with independent voters when matched up against John McCain than Hillary Clinton is. And he still sports a net-positive personal rating of 49-32, which is down only slightly from two weeks ago, when it was 51-28. Again, the biggest shift in those negative numbers was among Republicans.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd explains the new NBC News/WSJ poll, saying Obama maintained a good perception among voters, despite the Wright controversy.

*** McCain-ocrats? For the second poll in a row, more than 20% of Clinton and Obama supporters say they would support McCain when he's matched up against the other Democrat. There is clearly some hardening of feelings among some of the most core supporters of both Democrats, though it may be Obama voters, who are bitterer in the long run.

*** Carolina on my mind: By the way, Clinton also talks economy again today, and does it in North Carolina. With her foray into NC and Bill’s all-out campaigning in a bunch of other post-PA states, all signs are pointing to this going on at least through the last contests in June. But keep a particular eye on Clinton in Carolina. This is becoming more and more of a must-win state; A combination of a 15-20 point win in Pennsylvania and an upset in the Tar Heel state would shake up this race in the same way Obama's 11-contest win streak in February did.

*** Shakedown: Why didn't the Clinton campaign get superdelegates to sign on to that letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi rather than donors? Doesn't this letter coming only from major donors make it look like a threat or a shakedown? Wouldn't this letter coming from fellow superdelegates have had more impact? One Dem operative who doesn't have a horse in this fight reminds us: "Members of Congress -- who are superdelegates -- make up the DCCC. Threatening the DCCC is essentially threatening the very superdelegates HRC's trying to court. The HRC donor letter will just push undeclared superdelegates in Congress leaning toward Obama to endorse him sooner. It also reinforces the notion that the Clintons will destroy the party to win the WH. I just don't get it."

*** Supers turned off: A handful of undecided and pledged superdelegates come forward to tell NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger that her campaign's tactics in recent weeks are doing more harm than good

*** A fall preview: Those who love the Veepstakes will enjoy today's Obama speech, not for the substance but for the person who will introduce him: Michael Bloomberg. While the mayor says he's not endorsing anyone (yet?), this is the second time Bloomberg has given Obama a high profile photo-op (remember the meeting at that diner a few months back?). As for Obama's economic speech, per the campaign, "Obama takes on special interests for housing/economic crisis; lays out principles for new regulatory framework." Obama, himself, previewed the speech on the plane yesterday. "I will be giving some, I will be outlining, my thoughts on the current state of the economy. How we got there and some very specific prescriptions, what helped trigger the financial crisis and the financial problems." But it will be the potential of Obama-Bloomberg that could be the most important take-away. In fact, considering that anti-Israel sentiments being expressed by the Rev. Wright in these newly circulating church bulletins (see Andrea Mitchell’s reporting on TODAY below in the Obama section). A fortunate thing for Obama is at least these church bulletins aren’t video. The idea of a Jewish running mate might end up making more and more sense for Obama as the summer wears on.

*** Hooked? Also, did McCain take the bait? Back from his vacation, Obama made a point of trying to shift the focus to him vs. McCain again. (No talk of Hillary, by the way.) Then the McCain camp releases a statement bashing Obama this morning before his speech, calling this election a “clear choice.” (Again, no mention of Hillary.)

*** Swing-state campaigning: McCain campaigns today in Colorado, a state particularly the Obama campaign has been selling as a potential Dem Red State pick up. We’ve already seen McCain in Michigan. How many Dems are thinking that the longer this Clinton-Obama contest goes on, the harder it is becoming for Democrats to campaign and make in-roads in those potential pick up states? The DNC tries to do its part, attacking McCain’s viability out West, including Colorado and even his home state, in a conference call today with state Democratic Party leaders from those two states and Utah and Nevada.

*** On the trail: Clinton makes three stops in North Carolina, including the economic address; McCain raises money in Salt Lake City and Denver, where he also will take questions from reporters; Obama speaks on the economy at Cooper Union in New York City; Bill Clinton hits the trail hard in Pennsylvania with five stops; and so does Chelsea with three of her own in PA.

Countdown to Pennsylvania: 26 days
Countdown to North Carolina, Indiana: 40 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 222 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 299 days

Molly,
You must be one of the delusional supporters.  Truly delusional.  The "media" that you claim has continually bashed her has, in reality, kept her in the race.    Further, until the last 2 days, they haven't asked the most basic of questions that any job interview would ask:

Senator Clinton, you claim to be the "experienced" candidate in foreign relations but your claims about Northern Ireland and Bosnia have been proving wrong.  Can you help explain the discrepancy?
Holy crap.  Obama/Bloomberg would be a juggernaut of a ticket, IMO.  I'm a Republican, but that pairing would be hard to turn down.
Question Hillary's Judgment (sc, AZ) (Sent Thursday, March 27, 2008 10:13 AM):

Good question (sc, AZ):

Hillary's 3 AM Phone Call ad shows a little girl asleep in bed at home while Hillary supposedly answers a national emergency phone call at 3 AM making a point that she can protect our children. Yet she has Chelsea running around on a tarmac with her in Bosnia while supposedly under the threat of sniper fire and bombing. Is this how Hillary will protect your children? If asked why she had Chelsea with her would she not have to admit (via the 3 AM Ad) that she would never put her daughter (or yours) in harms way and therefore there were no threats on that tarmac? Some interesting questions.
Ask your self, just this one question. Why does Senator Obama refuse to have a new election in Michigan ?
Larry Lassider,Detroit,Mi. (Sent Thursday, March 27, 2008 10:32 AM)

Instead Larry, let's ask why American voter's elsewhere followed the Rules,&somehow need to pay attention to 2 states that Did'nt?Just another Lie from Hillary & her Ignorant supporter's who Pay No attention to FACT'S!

Flip-Flop myth buster. Remember the days of all the 'ebonics' ridiculing? Now we have an eloquent Senator from Illinois running for President, who is being berated for his exquisite command of the English language. "All he does is make speeches"...

FLIP-FLOP

Think it over.

Pulling for Obama '08
MOLLY. . . .Shut up! It is your kind that need to
cross over and get out of the Democratic party.  Form
your own racist seperatist party and stop hiding out in
a party that does not care what someone's race is.
Bird of a feather flock together.  That's why Clinton
is appealing to uneducated and ignorant racist voters.
What  low lifes.
For those of you that think that the race NEEDS to go on or you are disenfranchising voters need to get a grip.
If Hillary suspended her campaign today folks in those places could still vote for her.  Just as a few thousand voted for Edwards in Mississippi.
Get a grip folks.  The disenfranchisement argument is about as lame this year as it is in any other primary year when the nominee has been determined.
What the party leadership has now learned is that Hillary will destroy the democratic party because she believes that anyone that does not support her is a traitorous Judas that needs to be purged to make her campaign pure.
If this means laying waste to the democratic party so be it from her perspective.
The super delegates need to wake up and take care of the party before this candidate bent on its destruction can bring any more damage to it and its members.
I predict that when BHO gets the nomination - he will name Kathleen Sebelius (Kansas Governor) as his running mate(Vice-President) which will satisfy all the women who say they would only vote for HRC (women vote). She would then run for President in 2016 and have a better change of winning than HRC.  Also, Richardson will be the Sect. of State ( resolve the Hispanic vote issue); Bloomberg the Sect. of Treasury (Jewish and Israel concerns)and Colin Powell the Sect of Defense ( someone who would satisfy whose who might switch to McCain).

Then we will see a united party and the hell with the Clintons.

Obama said when he first met Pastor wright he had discussions with him on his racial issues. When he was declaring for Pres. he had to disinvite him. In Selma He declared himself an heir to Moses generation and was a Josha generation. I have to say I saw this explained better on other site. The Josha generation believe they will have all lead postions (governors, mayors, prosacutors etc.) blacks. This is why Obamas wife was proud for first time. It is working and the top position for country is .........Pres.Obama himself isnt offering anything but the entitlement his pastor says is his.I am not saying it shouldnt be but am saying it shouldnt be the only reason. He doesnt do well when he has to ans. press or others.Took a long time to take questions after speech. He has someone write a speech and he reads well.People are mesmerized with him. They cannt tell you why just they feel good his feeling of hope. He blamed Bill of useing code words to turn blacks from him.Now he uses them while smirking or laughing about it.Joshua generation has been brought about by white guilt and that is what Obama tried laying on us with his explanation of his pastors remarks. Typical white person and his wifes remarks about the mean whites show his feelings. picking on patty shows she hit a nerve. You keep expressing what you think and feel Pat.you have as much right as the mud slingers on here.
I never considered it before but Obama Bloomberg would be the perfect ticket.

There is NO democrat out there more experienced on economic matters than Bloomberg.

Bloomberg is an economic guru, the CEO of the largest economc organization.

He worked his way up from nothing to be a one of the richest people in the world, with over 20 billion dollars, all by understanding the economy and making smart investments.

He turned around New York after it was in a record debt after 9/11 and Giuliani. And now New York City has a surplus and tons of job creation.

Plus he's very green.

And he draws in the same support from independents that Obama does.

I think with the economic problems we have, Obama-Bloomberg would be a dream ticket and the perfect way to address the "experience" issue that Obama.

Bloomberg has a record turning record defecits into surpluses even during bad economic times and New York City.

And that's exactly what we need to do at the national level.

Plus Bloomberg said he is willing to spend up to a billion dollars to get an independent democrat elected in 2008. Obama could actually accept campaign matchign funds and Bloomberg could finance the whole campaign and then some
I am an Obama supporter and I agree that the super delegates should vote according to their conscience and based on who is more electable in November. They should not blindly vote based on who wins most pledged delegates.

The reason we have Primary elections is to determine electability in November so guess what, Obama is proving that he is electable, which he has done against Ms. Clinton who was the presumptive nominee up until January. Hillary is the one who is unelectable. She couldnt even win the primaries, how can she win the General Elections. Besides she has the highest disapproval rating of any candidate. 45% of the electorate will never vote for HRC. So she only has a 55% electorate to work with. Both Obama and McCain have disapproval ratings of 26% and 27% respectively. Go figure who is more electable.

Democratic nomination was Hillary's to lose and she is losing it. How can anyone argue that she is more electable in Nov when she screwed up the primaries. It takes strategy and smarts to win elections... different strategies for primaries and general elections. Hillary has failed in the first test, and is now asking us to trust us with a bigger test in November. Obama is a once in a life time candidate who is winning against odds. And those of you who are calling him racist, you really belong in the other party, please vote for McCain whoever the democratic nominee is. I and an Obama supporter but will vote for Clinton, if she is our nominee.
Everybody just calm down!

Obama has MORE pledged delegates, MORE states, and MORE pop vote.  This thing can run to June and beyond and this will not change.  At the end of the "race" he will STILL be ahead in pledged delegates, states won, and more than likely pop vote.  This has already REPEATEDLY been discussed and found to be TRUE.

With that being said, the nominee will have to be pushed to the magic number 2024 by the superdelegates.    The supers WILL NOT GO AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.  They are already coning out and saying that.

Now, the supers are watching EVERY move that these two make.  They have witnessed Billary thrwo the kitchen sink, endorse John McCain, and throw Bill Richardson under the bus.  They know all about Billary's "35 years of experience".  Her little "sniper-gate" may be news to US, but this is old news to the supers.  They have worked with the CLintons and know how they operate. The Clinton camp spin holds no water with the supers, and her latest "threat" from the BIG MONEY was another BIG MISTAKE.

The MSM and the Clinton stooges claim "the race is virtually a tie", and things are "so close", but the writing is on the wall for all of us to read.  Everyone needs a good story, and we all know this is the most exciting thing to hit politics since the last time the Clintons were in the in the White HOuse.  The pundits and talking head will talk, but their talk doesn't compete with the math.

Does Hillary have the right to continue in this race?  Yes.

Does she risk destroying the party in the process?  Possibly.

Does she risk destroying her future political career?  Probably.

Now, the supers can see her latest charade of "If I can't win, then neither will He", and they have a plan to end this.  Pennsylvania will be Hillary's Last Hurrah.

So sit back, relax, and watch Team Hillary Self-destruct.

It should be a good show!

Obama 08

POLLS..POLLS...POLLS... Let me dispel the s0-called poll myth. This poll was conducted by obama leaning pollsters who polled about 700 people which about 177 were blacks. Do the math, if you ask the question to black people if they prefer obama to Hillary Clinton, you can pretty much know what the answer will be.
Next you ask a personality question of the remaining voters to compare with obama and Hillary which everybody would say obama is more personable. But the most telling problem with this poll is that it left out an equal number of Hispanic voters.

So this doesn't reflect a honest approach to the fundamental question of who you like and who you dislike. Just a week ago Chuck Todd himself appeared on Chris Matthews hardball and when the numbers was overwhelmingly in favor of Hillary Clinton and negative towards barack obama, Chuck Todd quickly ASSURED a very visible UPSET Chris Matthews that the favorable numbers for Hillary is no need to be alarm because they were working on some new numbers that will tell the "REAL" story ..wink..wink.

When the obama thugs call and threaten congressman Lewis that if he didn't switch his support from Hillary to obama they would target his voters, I didn't see an uproar by the obama loving media, instead they praise the defection, so if Hillary wants to go after these delegates good for her.

Why MSNBC and this blog keep reporting that "more than 20%" of both Clinton and obama voters will not vote for the other candidate if their candidate lost the nomination. This is false and misleading , the actual poll say 19% of obama voters say they'll vote for Mccain and 28% OF HILLARY SUPPORTERS SAY THEY'LL VOTE FOR Mccain IF obama GETS THE NOMINATION.

Jeremiah Wright controversy is NOT ABOUT RACE BUT ABOUT HATE AND ANTI-AMERICA.. period.

SO STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH THESE POLLS AND STOP TRYING TO INFLUENCE THE "REAL" POLITICAL NARRATIVE OF VOTERS AND THE CANDIDATES.
