Obama's economic address

Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
NEW YORK -- Obama called for an overhaul of the nation's regulatory system today, arguing that "what was bad for Main Street was bad for Wall Street," and that a "loss of the sense of shared prosperity" had caused the current economic crisis.

"Pain trickled up," Obama said of how the increased rate of home foreclosures among individual homeowners had caused a downturn in the market as a whole.

Providing a historical rationale for increased government oversight of financial markets, Obama argued that the American economy had prospered and sustained itself because government had "guided the market's invisible hand with a higher principle."

VIDEO: Obama delivers an economic speech in New York, proposing an additional economic stimulus package and relief for homeowners.

He called for six principles for greater regulation and modernization of the nation's economic institutions, including:
(1) Government oversight for any entity that borrows from the federal government;
(2) An overall reform of the regulations governing financial institutions;
(3) Streamlining the nation's regulatory institutions;
(4) Regulations should be applied to what an organization does rather than what it is (e.g. financial regulations regarding sub-prime loans only applied to banks, allowing mortgage brokers to issue these loans without oversight);
(5) The SEC actively investigating market manipulation;
(6) And the creation of a financial oversight commission that identifies risks to the nation's financial system.

In calling for the oversight, Obama made a populist appeal.

"If we can extend a hand to banks on Wall Street, we can extend a hand to Americans who are struggling," he said, referring to the Fed's recent bailout of Bear Stearns. He also said that ordinary Americans had experienced the effects of a recession for the past several years and said that this was the only period in American history where incomes had not grown along with corporate profits.

He was introduced by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who told the crowd that "the federal government had become a poster child of irresponsibility." Bloomberg claimed that the current crisis was "an enormous challenge of leadership" and then told the audience that the stage on which Obama would give his speech was the one on which "Lincoln provided a brilliant defense of his position on slavery."

In calling for a more active government role, Obama contrasted his approach with Republican nominee John McCain's.

"John McCain recently announced his own plan, and it amounts to little more than watching this crisis happen,” Obama said. “While this is consistent with Senator McCain's determination to run for George Bush's third term, it won't help families who are suffering, and it won't help lift our economy out of recession."

McCain in turn released a written statement in which he said he was open "to considering any and all proposals" that tried to help those with foreclosed homes. Offering his own rationale for a governmental approach, he argued that aid should go to the "truly needy” to “prevent systemic economic risk" and enact reforms that increased transparency.  Attacking his Democratic opponents, he also said, "[W]hat is not necessary is multi-billion dollar bailout for big banks and speculators, as Senators Clinton and Obama have proposed."

Obama said today he agreed with McCain that the government shouldn't reward irresponsible borrowers with a bailout but claimed that McCain was turning a blind eye to individual homeowners who had not tried to profit on the system. He again touted Sen. Chris Dodd's proposal, which would create a Housing Security Program to help with buyouts of existing mortgages, so those facing foreclosure could pay mortgages at more modified interest rates.

"It asks both sides to sacrifice, while preventing a long-term collapse that could have enormous ramifications for the most responsible lenders and borrowers, as well as the American people as a whole," Obama said of Dodd's plan today. "That is what Senator McCain ignores."

Tomorrow, Obama will take his economic message on the road beginning a six-day bus tour through Pennsylvania.

Obama's plan was recently called the BEST OPTION by the New York Times.

Hillary?  Well:

Paul Krugman, economic afficiando extraordinaire, has a few choice words for Hillary's economic "plan"
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/25/all-stars/

All-stars

OK, this is pretty dumb. Hillary Clinton wants a high-level commission to analyze ways to resolve the mortgage crisis — including Alan Greenspan.
Yes, I know people still listen when Greenspan speaks — and John McCain once joked about taking Greenspan’s advice even if he’s dead. But for those in the know, AG is a key villain in the whole affair.
I mean, why not add Charles Prince, Stanley O’Neal, and Angelo Mozilo to the commission?

Fortune Magazine Chief Editor calls Clinton's housing proposal "disastrous"

Hillary's modest proposal (to wreck the housing market)
The current mortgage mess requires a more intelligent approach than the buzzsaw plan floated by Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton's proposal to freeze interest rates for five years could be disastrous.
(Fortune) -- Hillary Clinton is no dummy. Even her detractors know that. And yet in last night's Democratic presidential debate in Nevada, Clinton floated what is perhaps the dumbest solution to the current mortgage mess I've heard from a top presidential contender.

"I have a plan - a moratorium on foreclosures for 90 days [and] freezing interest rates for five years, which I think we should do immediately,"
Now what did you stel from Hillary ? The "flawed" candidate "Obama".
Again, Obama is showing himself to be a REAL leader, one who is looking past that distraction called THE CLINTONS and is looking more and more presidential everyday.

How many Kitchen Sinks do the Clintons own, anyway?

(I'm sure they can by plenty more with all that Saudi money they've acquired.)
This was a sweeping, yet detailed speech.  It reflects the kind of thoughtful policy analysis that I was hoping Obama would provide.  Hillary Clinton's speech, by comparison, was old news.  I mean, haven't we been hearing "job training" for a decade, at least?

Barack Obama showed that he is willing to LEAD, not just spout what conventional wisdom has already agreed upon.  Regulation of financial markets that matches the innovation of the financial sector in the last 18-20 years with appropriate regulatory reform will help protect investors for decades to come.  And measured assistance on the housing front, combined with incentives toward homeownership (did anyone notice the mortgage interest tax break for those of us who can't itemize?) is a great combination.

I am so proud of this candidate.  Barack Obama will make a terrific President of the United States.

Can't you Cinton supporters see that Obama is the whole package. This man is brillant! He may not have years of Washington experience, but his knowledge of the issues, understanding of policies and leadership skills are vast.
at least this doesnt sound like clintons plan
WOW!!!
This is somenthing that should have been dones
about 10 years ago.

Bush has no idea what he is doing......

Go Obama '08
The key to the solutions Obama outlines is not that they will just save us from this current economic crisis but America will be more ready or even prevent future crisis.

boom-bust cycles we have all come to accecpt is only a reflection of failed leadership.
That 6 point plan must be the "just words" the Clinton campaign was referring to. They're all washed up over there and that's why they're throwin the kitchen sink again.

Obama's plan is much to complicated for people to understand.

But McCain's economic  plan is a winner when it comes simplicity:
(1) More tax cuts for the rich.
(2) If you're a large corporation whose avarice has gotten it into trouble. the government will bail you out with more corporate welfare.
(3) If you're not rich and you've got financial problems, it's your own fault. Tough luck.
If one more clintonista says that this man has nosubstance than obviously they can not read or just wanna ignore all that is b4 there eyes. Obama has a plan to help people out. i for one am very interested in this. My husband and I took on a variable loan with the understanding that we would be able to refinancein a year or two b4 the reates begin to skyrocket. Now it is NOT to late for us yet, but with the economy crumbling down people like us who were well intentioned and can afford our house at its current rate will be bankrupt and destitute should our rates go up. We did not know that the housing market and loan industry would come crashing down a year after we bought our first dream home. We just wanted apiece of teh american dream to raise our 2 children (soon to be 3) in. we are a 2 income family both with post high school educations and have held jobs and paid into the tax sytem since we were 16!!! Do we not deserve a little break??? hell we would be satisfied for the short term in renegotiating our rate to be fixed rather than variable!!! But I guess only Bear Stearn's deserves a little hand up not the millions of tax payers that pay into a system and expect results!!!
Outlined and presented like a true leader.  HRC...let's continue to discuss real issues.  Now if MSNBC would stay focused on issues other than Pastor Wright the process may move forward.  Way too much Wright on MSNBC. Are they now a religious station?

Bob, Chicago
This looks like what Hillary has been asking Obama to come up with.  Financial policy.

Only problem is!!

I DON'T THINK HILLARY WILL UNDERSTAND IT.  Can someone from Obama's campaign call her and explain it to her?
I knew Obama was an idiot. I just didn't think he was this big of an idiot.
Brilliant speech! This country is in such terrible shape, and if we don't elect Obama in the Fall, we will find ourselves in worse shape a year from now. Only Obama can accomplish the points put forth in this speech, because only he will be free of the influence of special interests.

Go Obama!
First the government takes over health care. Next, the banks. Is there anything left for them to take over?
I'm really glad to see a plan of action by Obama and both sides discussing an issue in a civil manner. Charts and graphs broken down in laymen's terms on the foreclosure fix would be big help to the average person. And if help is out there, when would the homeowners receive it?
Two words -True Leader-

Obama 08
What is the hold up on the comments are you busy eating your lunch or twiddling your thumbs?
Obama is proposing that the government now run the banks. After the government takeover, will the banks work as well as the post office?
"Tomorrow, Obama will take his economic message on the road beginning a six-day bus tour through Pennsylvania."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And THAT is when you'll see his PA poll numbers start to rise.
Wake up AMERICA!!!
Thank god someone is fighting for us down here in the middle class I have a growing consern as to why people and politicans say it's okay to bail out a 30 billon dollar company (Bears) beacause it helps keep business aflot, but we shouldn't try to keep people who are paying what they can in there homes because they made a bad decision ,but lets make sure to  bail out people who are educated, smart, and know the rules and risks. What this means to me is two things, first the rich and powerful can do what they want because we accept they are the experts and we have no current oversight, also a major canidate comes out and says, the goverment should not bail out people with bad decisions. What? Do any of the republicans live in the real world? The history of any entity regulating it's self is a joke be it in sports, finances, airlines IT DOES NOT WORK.
Wake up people...
Too sad BO is so behind the eight ball!

So all the banks and brokers will go overseas to play greed with speed!
Our big free wheeling capitalistic system has flown the cccccccccccccccccccoop! Everything is off shore, we have little to nil to regulate anymore!
They make the rules and it is so to late!!
So, more government oversight to create greater regulation and modernization of the nation's economic institutions, and create a financial oversight commission that identifies risks to the nation's financial system.  This all sounds well and good, but who is going to pay for it.  We need legislation with guidelines and rules that these financial institution are to be bound by.  Not more commissions.
As a taxpayer for almost half a century, I prefer my tax dollars to be spent helping my neighbors, and your neighbers, rather than misappropriating them into the undeserving, greedy hands of the already super-rich.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

Pulling for Obama '08

That is what I truly want. The regulatory system in America is often beholden to special interests whose lobbying prevail over the voices of ordinary citizens. I distrust even the FCC, whose members I read in the past to have ties to drug companies.
It would have been pretty cool andd democratic to allow ordinary Americans to vote for heads of regulatory bodies unless presidents make wiser choices, rather than to let money rule our regulatory bodies.
My biggest dream is to outlaw lobbying firms and isntead use unpaid average citizens to lobby for specific legislation.
This article should be on the main web page so that more people can review a calm, considered approach to a very substantial problem.  Please move it out there.  Thx.  D.
Does BO know what the SEC currently does?  He also wants to "the creation of a financial oversight commission that identifies risks to the nation's financial system".  Maybe he should read the objectives of the Federal Reserve.  Anybody who works in finance knows that SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) is a financial burden for all but the largest of companies.  He proposes more regulation in points 1 and 4, and then contradicts them in points 2 and 3.  This is why speechs with no specifics trip over themselves.  More but streamlined regulation (contradiction).  Commission of experts to assess risk (Better than the current experts).  Who are these Wunderkids?  The academics who inhabit his campaign.  The same people proposing $850bn in new spending?  Add this regulation to the bill and I'm sure we can pass the $1Trillion by summer.
I like the way Senator Obama presents an overall vision of how to improve the financial markets through this crisis and prevent future problems, not just provide a band-aid for the current situation. That is just the kind of common sense, visionary leadership America needs.

Obama '08

P.S. Bloomberg or Biden for VP would make an AMAZING ticket!
I hope the 20% of the Clinton supporters that won't vote for Obama when he wins the primary election will go back to being right wing of the Republican party where they belong...

For the other 80%, please get on board with us and help us end this. We know who won this fight, it is time to start the healing and get behind this wonderful candidate!   Please take another look at Obama...it isn't like switching teams, we are all Americans. "if you cannot change your mind, you cannot change anything!"

These special interests don't stand a chance against the over 1.2 million small donors that Obama has. Help our party grow that database and be a part of the Calvary that takes America away from those special interests!  After all it is all about the Supreme Court Justices, if McCain gets in, we are going to have some pretty tough laws to abide by.

There are some people who are willing to give up their lives for the good of this country... then there are some people who cannot even give up their obviously lost nomination for the good of the country...
oh I am a titther Obama speaks whew. Take extra water for those fainting at his words. Listen if I could I would follow this bus with papers letting these people that will be awash with the Obama readings. I would like the Pa. people know about the garlic nose Italian remarks Obama supports and the jews and whites that ruin the country and world. The Irish arent any good what does that leave us?He or Pastor will have an article about whatever it is I am sure. This is getting to be to much. When will the  dawn break?? No more being afraid of bringing this to th efront.
Once again Obama leads the way and the Clinton/McCain ticket is left standing in the dust.

His approach to regulating the market without letting government become a player is sound thinking.

Free enterprise is not a ticket to rip, gouge and cheat. Obama stands clearly in favor of a free, responsible market with appropriate protections for working Americans from predatory corporations.

He's miles ahead of Clinton/McCain corpor08
I dont believe pa people will be bought like he is trying. He will send out false mailers like he always does. They arent stupid, This only works so many times.Robo calls wont get them they will talk to live people. His pastor has done in every nationality I think but th eone that will get him dont in,I think, is daming America. These people are th eworking class with pride of country each other and not what he is trying to deliver. I have faith in us and believe we will bring Hillary not just a win but a huge win. Pa has a large religous feeling and amount of people. We understand and accept those with different views but not the kind he endorses.Pa. loves Hillary
The American people will have a choice to make this fall.  Do we elect a future President Herbert Hoover or a future President Franklin Roosevelt.
It will be important to not be distracted from the very real choice and once in a generation opportunity for America.

Why should the baby boomers have to deal with the fact that all of our decent jobs have been shipped to China? Just print more money and let the working poor make their mortage payments for them via the inflation tax!
IT IS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE THINKS ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLASS OBAMA DID A GREAT JOB TODAY.  THE MIDDLE CLASS AND THE POOR HAS BEEN LEFT OUT FOR 8 WHOLE YEARS.  IT IS ABOUT TIME FOR SOMEONE TO THINK ABOUT US  I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD A REPUBLICAN IN OFFICE THE RICH GET RICHER  AND THE POOR GETS POORER  SO TRUE
Okay...Obama is Smart...Clinton is Dumb...now which one do we want to be our nominee? Duh!!! Come on DNC...get the Clintons out of the picture before they screw this up for us.
. . .This was my last day watching MSNBC.  Why did
you interrupt Senator Obama's Speech on economics to
have a "commentator" give us their version of what he
was saying instead of listening to him for ourselves.
I cannot stand these people. Then to top it off, in the
middle of his speech, switch to the Rev. Wright garbage
again.  Can't you see by the drop in Clinton's poll
numbers that America is sick of this nonsense?  I
will wait until later today and watch the speech in
its entirety on CSPAN.  You people are disgusting.

Obama for Hamas man paint it on his bus.Where is that pastor? Obama will need another vacation in a week or two.Pastors comeing up some have said it is a brave thing to do I believ it too. I have heard about the pressure put on blacks to keep them in line. Pathetic and selling himself for dates if you give to his campaign. How corrupt and arrogant is that?It never stops.I hope whoever gets that date is of age.maybe he will have it all taped I am sure he will.transparency.
Henrie Ware Bham Al. you should have been listening to Hillary especially last year. Obama did.
The whole foundation trembles under the added weight when the little guys underneath are not included in the growth.
"Pain trickled up," Obama said of how the increased rate of home foreclosures among individual homeowners had caused a downturn in the market as a whole.

He also said that ordinary Americans had experienced the effects of a recession for the past several years and said that this was the only period in American history where incomes had not grown along with corporate profits."what was bad for Main Street was bad for Wall Street," and that a "loss of the sense of shared prosperity" had caused the current economic crisis.

What is not surprising is mainstream media comment on the struggle within the Democratic party rather than reporting factual based differences between the Obama campaign & Clinton campaign.  The American people know the Clinton campaign is rife with false promises and still have to force-fed the Hillary with Side-show Bill comedy.
I like Senator Obama's strategy, one of getting the attention of those who will stand with him to bring about change. The second part of the strategy is to define the issues and present the plan for implementing it and finally with the support of the American people make the plan work. That's what is words have been about along. The thousands of people who actively listened to his speeches understood what his words are about/ Obama08
Hillary's speach - boooooooooorrrrring.

Obama's - lucid, compelling, intelligent (how refreshing after Bush), and puts the present crisis in true historical perspective.
Fantastic speech with real substance. Voters should be reading the transcript of this speech carefully. Obama roots his arguments in the pages of history and offers a balanced, reasoned approach to help balance our economic cycle of boom and bust. Free market enterprise is an amazing thing, when competitors start from a level playing field. Instead of spouting liberal reactionary measures to win votes, Obama goes to the core of the issues facing the market economy today.
I am not sure I am comfortable with this.  I will have to see more details, but at this point it sound like a little to much Government involvement and we've seen how good the Government is a handling things (Iraq, airbus, fed rate management, social security, etc..).

I agree something needs to be done, but I am not sure Obama, Clinton, or McCain have the right people or the right idea to fix it.  Obama's Chief Economist has already provide he is a complete rookie and in over his head, and McCain seems to basically just ignore it.

At a fundamental level I guess I have a real problem with my tax money bailing out stupid decisions and crooks.  When I bought my house I remember being approved for over twice the amount of the house I actually bought, and the lenders pushing ARMs and Interest only loans.  I choose to go with a smaller House that I knew I could afford based on my own financial numbers not theirs, and I went with a traditional 15 year fixed.

It just didn't make sense to me then, and everyone called me an idiot for doing what I did.  They kept saying "but you can buy such a bigger home!  You can save money with a lower interest rate of an ARM, and the average person doesn’t stay in their home more than 5 years anyway!  Home prices have only gone up, they won't go down why waste money on building equity!"

Now a lot (not all) of those same lenders/crooks are going belly up, and all these people (not everyone) who got greedy, or made stupid decisions (I agree there are some real tragedies out their) are losing their homes (that they really probably should not have bought in the first place) are wanting the government to come in and bail them out with my tax money.

So in a way I could potential get double hit, first because I opt’d to take a higher interest rate going fixed and then second my tax dollar get directed away from other programs to help this mortgage problem.

I see the fact that it is a real mess and it is having a real negative impact on the economy that effect me to, so agree as a society we have to do something.  I am just not sure bigger government is the answer, and for sure not when Real-estate and finical policy influencers are giving both Obama and Clinton Millions of dollars.
A lot of the Obama supporters remind me of Joe Bidens comments that he liked Obama because he was "articulate".  They keep repeating stuff like "He's Smart", "He's intellectual" as if they are trying to convince themselves of something.  A lot of the Obama Supporters sound like Soft Racists as opposed to Hard Racists in the KKK.
Alan, NJ
I think what he meant is that the SEC is also often under the influece of money and its members' ties to corporations that often distract their job. I would think an independent oversight commission like GAO would be nice.
Chuck Todd

has anyone at MSNBC actually sat down and listened to this speech or at least read the content? The speech is flat out brilliant.
Obama tied our past and our national journey as a country into something that really makes sense, in that magical way that only he can do. I guess the banal description is that he sounds "presidential:.
And, to stand on the stage at Cooper Union, the same stage that Abe Lincoln debated.
Look, many of those out there don't have to like Barack Obama, but there can be no denying that history is being made before our eyes.
Chuck, think of where the media would be if Obama did not exist or was not in the presidential race. Does anyone in the media want to imagine what the coverage of the Clinton-McCain race would be?
Obama is causing all these blogs and young people, and yes, is the single biggest reason a lot of journalists have jobs this election cycle.
Again, go listen to the speech. It is going to be another you tube record. Even on the right wing nut job coverage Obama is the majority of their coverage.
The polls do not take into account (only in a bare bones way) the huge amount of interest and energy Obama creates in this country and all over the world.
