Obama's economic address

Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
NEW YORK -- Obama called for an overhaul of the nation's regulatory system today, arguing that "what was bad for Main Street was bad for Wall Street," and that a "loss of the sense of shared prosperity" had caused the current economic crisis.

"Pain trickled up," Obama said of how the increased rate of home foreclosures among individual homeowners had caused a downturn in the market as a whole.

Providing a historical rationale for increased government oversight of financial markets, Obama argued that the American economy had prospered and sustained itself because government had "guided the market's invisible hand with a higher principle."

VIDEO: Obama delivers an economic speech in New York, proposing an additional economic stimulus package and relief for homeowners.

He called for six principles for greater regulation and modernization of the nation's economic institutions, including:
(1) Government oversight for any entity that borrows from the federal government;
(2) An overall reform of the regulations governing financial institutions;
(3) Streamlining the nation's regulatory institutions;
(4) Regulations should be applied to what an organization does rather than what it is (e.g. financial regulations regarding sub-prime loans only applied to banks, allowing mortgage brokers to issue these loans without oversight);
(5) The SEC actively investigating market manipulation;
(6) And the creation of a financial oversight commission that identifies risks to the nation's financial system.

In calling for the oversight, Obama made a populist appeal.

"If we can extend a hand to banks on Wall Street, we can extend a hand to Americans who are struggling," he said, referring to the Fed's recent bailout of Bear Stearns. He also said that ordinary Americans had experienced the effects of a recession for the past several years and said that this was the only period in American history where incomes had not grown along with corporate profits.

He was introduced by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who told the crowd that "the federal government had become a poster child of irresponsibility." Bloomberg claimed that the current crisis was "an enormous challenge of leadership" and then told the audience that the stage on which Obama would give his speech was the one on which "Lincoln provided a brilliant defense of his position on slavery."

In calling for a more active government role, Obama contrasted his approach with Republican nominee John McCain's.

"John McCain recently announced his own plan, and it amounts to little more than watching this crisis happen,” Obama said. “While this is consistent with Senator McCain's determination to run for George Bush's third term, it won't help families who are suffering, and it won't help lift our economy out of recession."

McCain in turn released a written statement in which he said he was open "to considering any and all proposals" that tried to help those with foreclosed homes. Offering his own rationale for a governmental approach, he argued that aid should go to the "truly needy” to “prevent systemic economic risk" and enact reforms that increased transparency.  Attacking his Democratic opponents, he also said, "[W]hat is not necessary is multi-billion dollar bailout for big banks and speculators, as Senators Clinton and Obama have proposed."

Obama said today he agreed with McCain that the government shouldn't reward irresponsible borrowers with a bailout but claimed that McCain was turning a blind eye to individual homeowners who had not tried to profit on the system. He again touted Sen. Chris Dodd's proposal, which would create a Housing Security Program to help with buyouts of existing mortgages, so those facing foreclosure could pay mortgages at more modified interest rates.

"It asks both sides to sacrifice, while preventing a long-term collapse that could have enormous ramifications for the most responsible lenders and borrowers, as well as the American people as a whole," Obama said of Dodd's plan today. "That is what Senator McCain ignores."

Tomorrow, Obama will take his economic message on the road beginning a six-day bus tour through Pennsylvania.

A "populist appeal" is extending a hand to banks?

Since when is backing banks against consumers populist at all?

Obama voters need to take their messianic blinders off and see what that really means - no help for the average contributor and more help for the rich, more of the same stuff we've been seeing, except now it's going to be a direct handout instead of a tax cut.

Obama has shown, both in his pick of advisors and in his speeches about how he says he cares, but fails to follow through with actual programs. Somehow what's bad for the average person becomes good for the average person when it's coming out of Messiah Obama's mouth.
Our current financial regulatory system is fragmented and does not carry across the various financial silos. The current mortgage crisis is an example of that. Banks are regulated through one system while mortgage companies by another and the separate regulatory functions were for different reasons. Meanwhile, there was no communication between regulators which led to the current crisis.

Obama's solution parallels the London regulatory model where the different entities are subject to a "super-regulator" who monitors how the despirate regulatory bodys control their sectors and communicate with each other. If the metrics indicate a problem in a given sector the super-regulator steps in and makes ajustments. This is a brillient evidence based approach that works.
Hillary welcome back to NY.  It will kill you to have to vote for Pres Obama's plan.  You can go back to sleep now, we know you have been deprived of it. Dream of running through bullets in Bosnia.
How's he gonna pay for all this regulation.  You gotta pay the regulators.  This, universal health care, and a war that he won't be able to end no matter how much he says he wants to.  If he's elected, hold on to your wallets folks cause we're in for a bumpy four years.
I am pretty sure that the word is "historic" not "historical."  He provided an "historic" rationale.
That black canadate sure can read. I am agog with his mesmermisin ways .He could make a typical garlic nose perosn wish she had a hero like Ferrakhan. Maybe Obamma could introduce him to us and ya know what  lets all have dinner with Obamma and his friends. Lets see:Resko,Farrakhan,Wright,Ayers,we'll have a full table.The Lobbyists praise Obama for makeing key changes to health care bill that were favorable to insurer.(Boston Globe 9/23/07)They might come too.Oh lets have th eGov. of P/R too.He needs a lift.
I'm A "Typical White Person Who Really Agrees With Mr. Obama.Please Become Educated And Read What This Man Has Been Saying.Regardless OF How You Want To Knock Him Down He Still Comes Back.This Man Is Suited For Thee Highest Office. So All You Rush Limbaugh And Fox Characters Here
Get A Life.
Obama 08
Anyone remember the hundreds of billions bank deregualtion cost us during the Reagan/Bush years.
Or how about that phony energy crisis that Bush/Cheney and the Enron friend pulled on us right after they took over.

Barack Obama remembers and his proposals will help prevent future debacles that we on end paying for anyway.

Speaking of paying when is Neil (Silverado) Bush going to paypack that money he owes us.
What was brilliant about Obama's speech is that he didn't inject it with a lot of "I, I, I" and he didn't run down any of the people who have been working so hard to keep things afloat.  I see him as a President who will respect others and will work WITH them for a common good.  He always looks at things from a big picture, which is exactly how he framed his speech today.
Bigger government is not the answer, but tighter regulation and oversight is imperative in certain industries.  As a banker, I see first hand what happens when consumers are hurt by lack of regulation.
Houston, love your commentary.

Obama's plan:

1.  Redistribution of all income.  Socialism.

2.  Tax Corporations so they will leave the country and leave everyone without jobs.

3.  If you buy a home, make sure you are able to make the payments.  Hint:  If you are barely able to make minimum payment on credit cards, you probably can't afford the taxes that Obama is going to put on the home that you are thinking of buying, so don't buy it.

DON'T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. "Carpe diem" (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see's a beautiful world of  plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it's time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children's future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don't want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama's. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become  President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama  has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON'T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton's offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama's place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton's have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton's. Only the Clinton's are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

"This is not a game" (Hillary Clinton)

Sincerely

jacksmith...

NOW WE KNOW WHO PAYS FOR ALL THE HILLARY BASHING ON THIS SITE. ----- OBAMA HIMSELF!!!

Obama go - home!

Hillary for President!
MSNBC is my #1 cable news outlet, but I am GREATLY disappointed in their broadcasting today - cutting away from this speech to rant more about stupid Wright and stupid church bulletins from years ago or whatever they were babbling about all day. I changed the channel - CNN covered the entire speech.

As Mrs. Clinton would say, "SHAME ON YOU, MSNBC!"
Dave in San Fransisco - 2:46 pm post - You need to go back to school and learn to read and comprehend what you are reading before you run your mouth.
Obama said that we should be helping average Americans, not banks - you moron!

How can you not see that the statement Obamam made is pro-average Americans, not banks? Here it is please re-read it....you might get it this time.

((("If we can extend a hand to banks on Wall Street, we can extend a hand to Americans who are struggling," he said, referring to the Fed's recent bailout of Bear Stearns. I have no problem with you criticizing Obama or if you support even the current shameless and failed regime or even anyone else,  but have your facts straight.
