Clinton hits McCain on job training

Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Hillary Clinton hit Republican rival John McCain on the economy again today with a return to her "3 am" phone call analogy. The senator said it was time to "level the playing field for the middle class" and argued McCain would ignore the ringing phone in an economic crisis.

"Sometimes the phone rings at 3 am in the White House, and it's an economic crisis,” she said. “And we need president who is ready and willing and able to answer that call. I read the speech that Sen. McCain gave the other day, which set forth his plan which does virtually nothing to ease the credit crisis or the housing crisis. It seems like if the phone were ringing he would just let it ring and ring and ring.”

VIDEO: Hillary Clinton says Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain isn't prepared to handle an economic emergency. Watch her entire speech.

Clinton called the Arizona senator “a friend,” but noted he had admitted that he did not know much about economics. She said he would rather ignore the credit and mortgage crises facing Americans instead of solving them.

"I think we've had enough of a president who didn't know enough about economics," she said. "I don't think we can afford four more years of that kind of inaction."

Earlier this week, Clinton compared McCain to Depression-era President Herbert Hoover for saying the government should not bail out or reward banks or small borrowers who "act irresponsibly."

The former first lady has consistently sought to portray herself as the candidate best prepared to manage the economy and often mentions the number of jobs created and the number of people lifted out of poverty during her husband's administration, an effort to link herself to what many see as his economic successes. She has even taking to joking lately that when people say they don't want to go back to the 90s, she wants to know which part they didn't like “the peace or the prosperity”?

The hits on McCain came during a speech on a new plan to spend $12.5 billion over five years to help support job training and grants for displaced workers and on-the-job training and educational opportunities. Clinton has been criticized for not doing enough to explain how she would pay for all the programs she has proposed. According to an aide, this new plan would be financed using a portion of the savings from a Corporate Subsidy Commission, a group that would identify and eliminate outdated corporate subsidies.

The stop in Raleigh was part of a six-day tour through North Carolina, Indiana and Pennsylvania that will focus on economic issues.

The event began 1 hour, 15 minutes late and the senator seemed to rush through the speech, barely pausing for applause lines. At the beginning of her speech, Clinton quipped about Republicans being the party of backward movement and not progress.

"Years ago, when I first got involved in politics,” Clinton said, “I heard that old saying that, being, running for office is like driving a car. If you want to go forward, you put it in D; if you want to go backwards, you put it in R."

*** UPDATE *** The RNC sends this along: “Obama and Clinton’s economic plans are what you expect from two senators who think that big government is the solution for just about every problem. Obama and Clinton’s plans for more taxes, spending and regulations will lead to fewer homeowners and jobs. Instead of misrepresenting and attacking McCain’s proposals, Obama and Clinton should explain why they voted earlier this month to raise taxes on Americans earning as little as $31,850.”

At least this has become an election about big ideas.
OH, For the love of God, will you let go of the 3 AM phone call???

We've already seen what happens when you're sleep-deprived.
"Sometimes the phone rings at 3 am in the White House, and it's an economic crisis."

LOL!!

How can anyone take her seriously?
All Clinton can do is tear people down, but she doesn't like it when it's done to her.  How dare her think that she is the only person alive that knows what to do about issues facing this country.  She has been equally appalling to McCain as well as Obama.  I hope that you can't tell whether I am a Democrat or a Republican.  Just as long as you can tell that I despise this self-centered Lady Macbeth.
And statistacally old white ladies are the worst drivers....please don't let her drive!!
Hillary! Quit getting up at 3AM to answer that phone! It makes you tired, and makes you say things that are not true!
Barry knows even less about economic than McLame!
Two wrongs do not make a WRIGHT.

Vote for Hillary she is the leader of the pack!
3:00am again?

Are we really going to have an economic crisis that occurs at 3:00 in the morning?  No.  Would you be ready if it happened?  Doubtful.  More likely you would wait until the morning like every other President would.

Enough already.  We already know that McCain is poorly versed in economics and apparently foreign policy as well.  Save it for the candate competing in the general election.
Let me get this right--Hillary blames "sleep deprivation" for her making up the Bosnia sniper fire story, right?  How can she answer the phone at 3am if she can't handle being tired?!?
Who cares. Let's get to the Obama /McCain debates. Hillary's voice is fading, fading, fading, fading,  fading ......gone.
You go girl---and pay no attention to those ,such as the obama channel, msnbc, and all those that have raked your family over the coals. The had Obama stars in their eyes and neglected to vet him in any way. What we are learning now would choke a horse.Just today we learn more about the racist jew hating,Italian hating america hating church. And cannot ignore the arrest of the Govornor and congresspeople of Puerto Rico for tampering with the election and blackmailing companies for money.OOps another superdelegate for Obama no longer able to cast his vote for his guy.Guess Obama will come out and make another soothing speech to calm his people down.He is being kept pretty busy with this defense of preacher wright and now another guy to defend. It is apparant why he and his democrats are trying to shut this election down---what is next?
Nice Try Hillary.  The last time you utilized the 3 am call you were sleep deprived( Bosnia " misspeak").

I do not agree with McCains' Herbert Hoover positions on the economy, but what in your back ground shows us you are ready to lead. Your solutions do not include modifying the Bankruptcy code which would force lenders to negogiate with creditors on interest or house value( Obama's plan). In typical " Janus" fashion you supported a draconian bill to look conservative and was relieved it did not pass. What kind of leadership and judgment does that show.
3:00 a.m. again?? I hope she is not sleep deprived or she may 'misspeak' when she picks up that phone...

OBAMA '08 - Yes WE Can!!
Is everyone in this campaign season a hit man? It seems like candidates cannot respectfully disagree with one another or the American people delights in cat fights and political bickering.
If Hillary disagrees with McCain, I don't like to hear First Read saying "hits him/her". I want a politics of dialogue, not finger pointing.
Obama and Hillary both have been hitting each other like mad. But it is hard to refrain from responding verbally when you are constantly bashed.
Aw, maybe he just didn't answer the phone because
he forgot to turn on his hearing aid?

For once I agree with HRC. Enough with people being ignored, doing nothing, holing up at the ranch. The PRes. had to connect. The quote from a citizen to TR:
My roof blew off, my dog died, my wife is mad at me, but things will be allright because I know you're there. (Loose quote.)

However, this red phone thing and 3 a.m. is getting a little cartoonish.
"Sometimes the phone rings at 3am in the White House and it’s an economic crisis. And we need a president who is ready and willing to answer that call."

So, will you be lucid enough to make a sound judgement at 3am, or will you be "sleep-deprived?"
The phone shouldn't be ringing at the White House during an economic crisis. Unless there's a bill to sign into law. Otherwise, THE PRESIDENT IS POWERLESS on the economy.

If Hillary and Obama want to change education, health care, economics, taxes, and everything else then they should STAY IN CONGRESS, WHERE THE LAWS ARE MADE. Because the President can only agree or disagree, and if he disagrees, he can STILL BE OVERRIDDEN.

I don't know where in the last 70 years we forgot that the President is the commander-in-chief and enforcer of laws, NOT A KING. The only candidate who seems to understand this is McCain, who is primarily motivated by national security, which is, SURPRISE, the President's primary function.

Don't like McCain's national security policies, FINE, ELECT A CONGRESS THAT WILL STAND UP TO HIM.
Democrats call Bush the great evil, but their Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader are just as much to blame.

McCain's the only one qualified to manage a national defense.
Much better - THAT is how Hillary needs to be campaigning. Maybe if she keeps this up her negatives will go down.

I am an Obama supporter, and in the past week or so I got to the point that I swore I would not vote for Hillary in the general - I would have written in Obama - but I would vote for the Hillary represented here - in a General Election (IF she gets the nomination FAIRLY).
"Years ago, when I first got involved in politics,” Clinton said, “I heard that old saying that, being, running for office is like driving a car. If you want to go forward, you put it in D; if you want to go backwards, you put it in R."

Ugh.  Was there a laugh-track after that gem?

Why is anyone still reporting what Billary says.  She has already lost this election.  She is just out there running her mouth and distracting everyone from John MCCain.

This needs to end.

It is sad when the writing is on the wall and the talking heads (and Billary) refuse to read it.

IGNORE BILLARY AND FOCUS ON THE TWO GENERAL ELECTION NOMINEES!!!!!
"Sometimes the phone in the White House rings at 3am and it's an economic crisis"????  Wait, let me guess...she'll be "ready on Day One" because she has "35 years of experience" at answering the "3am phone calls" that might come on "Day One" but she'll be ready because of that "35 years of experience", etc.,etc.  It goes on and on.

I too, always had respect and admiration for Senator Clinton,(in fact,as a woman, I was excited about the prospect of her being in the race) but her campaign is doing her an injustice and damaging her reputation.  At least, I HOPE it's a case of bad advice from her advisors.  I don't want to think that she personally has been the "decider" in all the truly bad decisions that have been made by her campaign lately, but then again.............I can't imagine that she relinquishes control on many things that involve her.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I want to give props to Clinton for focusing on the right adversary here.
Maybe if Hillary would stop taking these 3am phone calls she wouldn't be so sleep deprived and talking about sniper fire that never happened

Does McCain smell the smoke from the Green zone yet?
You can surge all you want but it is still not our country, they still don't like us, and when we leave, next year or 100 years from now it will still be their's and they will claim it and all that was spent will have been in vain.
Is no one in the press in McWars face yet?
The choice is becoming easier every day for Democrats. You can either nominate a positive candidate in Obama or a negative one in Hillary. It seems that you Democrats have a rather obvious choice.
Mrs. Clinton owns the "3 oclock" turf and does a great job with it framing McCain and his lack of economic policies and knowledge to voters with it.  It was also about time for the 90's "peace or prosperity" line.  For us to weren't in middle school during the 90's and had to endure 12 years of Reagan-Bush-I policies, the economics of the 90's were good.
HILLARY, at least Senator McCain will 'admit' to 'something'. You, and Bill never admit to anything, even when YOU are caught on videotape,( or in his case, NOT until he is caught on blue fabric).

The people of NY want you to deliver the jobs you promised. We don't believe you, Senator Clinton.

Pulling for Obama '08

Oh where's patty when you need her, undoubtably she's somewhere dodging sniper fire. Scorch the earth, and burn with it.

Obama 08
Its amazes me who folks are believing whatever appears on the boobtube.  Please do some research before going off w/ craziness.  I want every one that so calles "hates" Obama because of Wright, do some dang research of your own.  Go to the church sit in see what goes on and the assistance it provides the community.  Going in for 30 seconds does not count.
Will someone at NBC actually confirm whether what the RNC claims is true?  Don't just post responses when they could full of falsehoods!
Hillary invented the telephone...while she was under sniper fire.
Ugh, indeed.  Get a manual transmission Hillary.  It'll improve your gas mileage.
Why is the 3 a.m phone relevant here if we already know Hillary did not aswer it or did not confront any major national crisis?
Super tired of this crap. I know First Read isn't going to post this one because they haven't posted about sixty percent of my relevant comments.
The Republicans only want to bail out thier banks & stocks (Bear Sterns), before the help the little people.
The Republicans only want to bail out thier banks & stocks (Bear Sterns), before the help the little people.
Mccain is all for big government....in IRAQ...at our expense!!
'...Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing....'

Told by an idiot.....
Just more meaningless words from Billary

signifying nothing...

How's that Iraq War vote working out for you Hillary ?
How's the war going, anyway ?
What's with the 3AM stuff.  Maybe being up at 3AM is why she suffered from sleep deprevation that caused the whole Bosnia business.  You would think that after blaming sleep deprivation for the Bosnia lie the campaign would be smart enough to lay off of it.  The Clinton campaign is surely imploding.
Wow, "Hillary has it Wright" did you make that up all by yourself?  It really has gotten down to silly season.
If she was handling what she should have been handling at 3AM when she was first lady maybe we never would have heard of Monica Lewinsky.  Get off the 3AM stuff.
Sierra-
Don't have such a grim outlook...quotes from a favorite tragedy bring back memories of death and defeat...
"Aw, maybe he just didn't answer the phone because
he forgot to turn on his hearing aid?"
----Deborah Greenlawn, NY

Wow. You'd probably get irritated with a sexist or racist joke toward the Dem candidates, but age discrimination is pretty funny. If that wasn't your intent, then I apologize, but the McCain age jokes coming from Democrat posters is getting really irritating.
Why is the monster so fixated on 3 a.m.?

Some reporter ought to ask her when was the last time if ever the president got a 3 a.m. phone call about an economic crisis.
Yes, Hilery has been up at 3AM a lot, take a look at her face, she isn't getting any sleep, It shows. She hasn't made any changes either, can you see her as pres. She will be calling other countrys liers and embellish or bespeak what they said to her.Or better yet yell "I didn't say that" to the congress.
Hillary's first 3am call was a National Security issue, her claim of extensive 'experience' was found to be fraudulent so the call at 3am is now about economics.  I agree with Senator Obama 'this is just silly Hillary'.

Couldn't do it for NY-but she's got the answer for
all 50 states?  Important ones and unimportant ones?

New COUNTING GAME:  No more "ready on day one"
 it's  "red phone" and
       "tax and spend liberals" (again!)
The Republican and neo-cons economic and trade policies are responsible for the job losses in the United States.  Also, the current President Bush's deregulation of the banking and mortage industry is responsible for the credit problems that the citizens of the United States faces today.  This is what happenes when you fail to understand that the citizens of the United States pay your salary, not any corporation.  You are obligated to serve the best interests of the nation, not any special interest group.  The troubles that this nation is experiencing today have been caused by Republicans and the Republicans alone.
It becomes more clear with every passing day. McCain will probably kick the bucket before he finishes his first term, Billary woos rednecks because they are the only ones who will buy her crap, and Obama is looking for an intelligent vote? An exercise in futility. Billary is destroying any chance she might have in this, or the next election, and what is she going to do if Obama gets in? Run against him in 2012? She should have stayed on as first lady, just going from Bill to George W. At least she might have been useful. Noel, you are right. If she'd been doing what she should have been doing at 3:00am, this wouldn't be happening. Oh, and she might have been able to get a job with what's her name, the call girl from new York.
Here is a piece of an article I read on internet. I know nothing convinces MSNBC that Obama is a liar but this may convince you.
On Monday, the Obama campaign responded to Hillary unveiling comprehensive plan to deal with the housing crisis by attacking her for taking contributions connected to sub prime lenders. Campaign manager David Plouffe said: "If we're really going to crack down on the practices that caused the credit and housing crises, we're going to need a leader who doesn't owe those industries any favors."
As it turns out, those were just words… Today, Senator Obama gives an economy speech followed by a fundraiser at - you guessed it - one of the top 10 issuers of sub prime loans in America, Credit Suisse. In fact, Senator Obama has taken more money from the top 10 issuers of sub prime loans than BOTH Senator Clinton and Senator McCain

- Obama has taken $1,180,103 from the top issuers of sub prime loans. [cq.com]
- Obama received $266,907 from Lehman. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $5395 from GMAC. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $150,850 from Credit Suisse First Boston. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $11,250 from Countrywide. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $9052 from Washington Mutual. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $161,850 from Citigroup. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $4600 from CBASS. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $170,050 from Morgan Stanley. [Cq.com]
- Obama received $1150 from Centex. [Cq.com]
