McCain: Introducing...

Posted: Friday, March 28, 2008 9:28 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The campaign unveiled its first TV ad of the general election, which will run, for now, only in New Mexico (5 EVs). This is a state that was carried by Gore in '00 but flipped to Bush in '04. This appears to be a preview of what next week's biography tour will be focused on; getting to know McCain.

Full script of the ad, titled: "624787,” his Navy serial number:
MCCAIN: Keep that faith. Keep your courage. Stick together. Stay strong. Do not yield. Stand up. We're Americans. And we'll never surrender. ANNCR: What must a president believe about us? About America? That she is worth protecting? That liberty is priceless?  Our people, honorable? Our future, prosperous, remarkable and free? And, what must we believe about that president? What does he think? Where has he been? Has he walked the walk?

INTERVIEWER: What is your rank? JOHN MCCAIN: Lt. Commander in the Navy. INTERVIEWER: And your official number? JOHN MCCAIN: 624787 ANNCR: John McCain The American president Americans have been waiting for.

Politico’s Ben Smith points out, “The narrator is Powers Boothe, best known for his work in ‘Deadwood’ and ‘Red Dawn.’”

USA Today previews the bio tour McCain is embarking on. He will be "visiting schools and military installations "that have played a significant role in shaping who I am today," as McCain put it in a fundraising letter. Senior campaign adviser Charles Black said, "We do not take it for granted that people know his background." The goal is to fix McCain's image in the voters' minds before the Democrats do it for him -- provided he has the money." Stops include Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; military bases in Florida and Mississippi; and his political base in Arizona. The son and grandson of admirals, McCain is also expected to discuss his service during the Vietnam War.

The campaign got a taste of what life could be like if the economy is the No. 1 issue and the Democrats relentlessly attack him on the issue.

"In an economic speech on Tuesday, McCain (Ariz.) said he supports government assistance for Americans facing home foreclosure because of the turmoil in financial markets. But he declined to embrace the kind of government intervention for individuals and institutions favored by Clinton and Obama, arguing that ‘it is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers.’

“Obama (Ill.) and Clinton (N.Y.) have pounced on that quote in an effort to paint McCain as indifferent to the problems of ordinary Americans. Speaking in New York yesterday, Obama characterized McCain's views as amounting to ‘little more than watching this crisis happen.’ Clinton, appearing in Raleigh, N.C., said McCain prefers to ignore the crisis or simply blame families for their problems.

“ ‘Sometimes the phone rings at 3 a.m. in the White House and it's an economic crisis,’ Clinton said, alluding to an ad she ran against Obama weeks ago. ‘And we need a president who is ready and willing and able to answer that call.’ McCain's plan, she said, does virtually nothing to ease the credit or housing crisis. ‘It seems like if the phone were ringing, he would just let it ring and ring and ring,’ she said.”

In case you hadn't noticed, NYT's David Brooks is back to being a BIG fan of McCain. “McCain opened his speech with a description of his father leaving home on the day of Pearl Harbor, and then being gone for much of the next four years. He harkened back repeatedly to the accomplishments of the Truman administration.

“In so doing, he signaled that the foreign policy debate of the coming months will be very different from the one of the past six years. Anybody who thinks McCain is merely continuing the Bush agenda is not paying attention"

Iraq.

This invasion has been a humiliation, as are most invasions.

Please don't anyone look for "victory". There is no victory here for the United States of America. Ever.

We can only hope that the Iraqi's can form some sort of stable democracy. A safe democracy. We can't do it politically. If the Bush Administration and Congress had bothered to learn anything about the Mideast, they would have known this.

But of course no one in our government ever prepares for anything in a well thought out manner.

President Bush & John McCain - their words and the reality of the situation do not match up.
The republicans don't elect militay heros...after all they elected george bush, air national guard chickenhawk who defended the skies over texas and alabama from the commie hordes....

McCain should not estimate Hillary's combat experience, after all she participated in a mother daughter raid on Bosnia.
If we elect a war mongering war obsessed war war war war hoo-ah POW like McCain, we are telling the rest of the world we are a war mongering nation and will attack and attack any nation that ticks us off even if that bankrupts us, and completely expends all our military resources and all men between the age of 18 and whatever. Oh, and we can be sure he will start WWIII, will ignore global warming, and will turn us back to a Hoover-esque depression era nation.  G-d help us all if this geezer wins.
My fellow Americans....PLEASE DO NOT vote for mccain!!
"..never surrender.." Smacks of stubborn arrogance. What is wrong with these people. They claim themselves honorable, yet do not have the humility to admit a misstake. Nothing is more courageous than taking responsibility. Nothing garners admiration, more than owning-up.

Given all that Senator McCain saw, and suffered as a POW, ( for which he deserves our gratitude, and respect), one would think that, among the legislators, he would be the greatest advocate for peace when it is warranted. Four more years of GWB? The ground will open further, and swallow us.

He is not the one.

Pulling for Obama '08
McCain and Bush keep saying how sucessful the "surge" has been.  Events in Basra (again) don't seem to bear out their fantasy. No matter how they spin it, it's the same bottomless quagmire its been for the past 5+ years.  Now U.S. troops are stepping in once more while the Iraqi government troops slip to the sidelines. Bush doesn't care, he's heading to Crawford.  And McCain has no plan other than a 100 year occupation.  A vote for McCain is a vote for Bush - they are no different.
Actually Pat, McCain is more green than previous candidates from the Republican party. He realizes that global warming is an issue to be dealt with seriously. As far as the US being a waring nation, we are, we always have been, we always will be. But hopefully never on our soil. To the other Pat, to say our that government doesn't do its research is ridiculous. To all the Pat's of the world, do you research and then post educated comments!
Oh, people! Get off your high horse. McCain IS different from Bush but if that is how you must push your Democratic agenda good luck with that. Obama's time table for withdrawal will NEVER safely happen, wake up people. As much as you will never admit it, McCain would be the most prepared candidate to deal with the situation, while the Dems will flail about like fish out of water, especially Obama.
To those of you who keep incorrectly throwing that 100 years of war out there when it comes to McCain...

What is your stance on our current 60 year war with Germany?  Because either you are misinterpreting his comment, which was meant to say that we could be in Iraq for a hundred years if it's like Germany, or you truly believe that we are still at war in Germany.
McCain's father wasn't the only dad to leave for four years in WW II!  So did MY dad!  Doesn't make me presidential!
Your an idiot if you think Iraq and Germany situation are comparable. The only way you can support McCain in good concience is if you support everything that has gone on during the Bush administration. Under McCain we will have continuous wars and a poor economy -- no doubt about it. I am only taking him at his own words; see for yourself.

He has also been quoted on many occassions saying that he does no much about the economy.
I voted for McCain in the primary, but have since had time to think about it. The phrase "Stand for America" means absolutely nothing since there is no more "America" as many Americans understand it. America has been outsourced to the global community. Free trade - includes trading humans too - anyone who works for a living on the globe. McCain supports free trade. He helped destroy what protections his ancestors (and many other families) fought for.  The only thing "Worth the Fighting For" by this current band of candidates seems to be the destruction of the U.S. through free trade in order to form a more perfect North American Union. To post an ad announcing a desire to "defend America" seems to be the ultimate cruelty. There is something truly evil in it. The only one who has had the courage to touch this topic is Barack. So..I'm reading about him now. If you wish to see the outcome of free trade read Irelands http://www.wiseupjournal.com. You are in for a shock.
FJ...I'm not saying they are comparable AT THE MOMENT.  What I'm saying is that people keep taking McCain's 100 years in Iraq as 100 years of war.  His FULL STATEMENT was about having a military presence for 100 years provided there weren't soldiers being harmed.  He was basically making the statement that in the future he envisioned the military presence there to be similar to our military presence in present-day Germany, South Korea, etc.
McCain using a POW interrogation as a campaign ad is disgusting.  It really trivializes the sacrifice made by the many who served in that war.  Some things should be held in high enough honor not to be exploited, especially in some sound-bite commercial drama.
McCain has so much riding on his military background (both his own and the family).  I am waiting for that to backfire because of the war in Afghanistan and the conflict in Iraq to create so much antimosity for continuing these conflicts that being hyper pro-military is detrement.

McCain's problem with this large focus on military matters shows that he fails to look at much of anything else.  He has stated that his knowledge of the economy is limited.  Right now, that is one of the most important things to be done -- look at economic issues.  He is willing to let the market work it out?  That isn't going to work!  The free market isn't smart enough to know when to stop.  It needs to have the government whip it into shape.  McCain seems unwilling to do that.
