Clinton: Health care, N. Ireland...

Posted: Friday, March 28, 2008 9:31 AM by Domenico Montanaro

In an extensive interview with the NYT, Clinton talks health care. She "said she would like to cap health insurance premiums at 5 percent to 10 percent of income. The average cost of a family policy bought by an individual in 2006 and 2007 was $5,799, or 10 percent of the median family income of $58,526, according to America’s Health Insurance Plans, a trade group. Some policies cost up to $9,201, or 16 percent of median income."

More: "Mrs. Clinton also she said if she could not generate the money needed to pay for universal coverage through other means, she would not object to raising the excise tax on tobacco products, which Congress last increased in 1997 to 39 cents a pack.

“I’m a big believer in raising tobacco taxes,” Mrs. Clinton said when asked whether an increase should be on the table. “You know, when we were working on the Children’s Health Insurance Program, that’s the funding stream that the Congress came up with, which was bipartisan, which worked out very well. At some point, there’s going to be diminishing returns. But, sure, why not? I don’t have any objection to that.”

“As in her debates with Mr. Obama and other contenders, Mrs. Clinton displayed an easy command of health policy in the 45-minute interview, conducted in a basement meeting room in the Midtown Manhattan tower that houses her Senate office."

AP has a fact-check of sort that doesn't look good for Clinton when it comes to her role in the Northern Ireland peace process. "Clinton's longtime claims to have played a difference-making role in Northern Ireland attracted no criticism until the buildup to St. Patrick's Day this year. To some ears, her most recent comments have raised a false impression that she helped produce the landmark Good Friday peace accord of 1998. Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern came to Clinton's defense, meeting with the senator in Washington -- and making his first phone call to Obama.

"I think for anyone to try to question the Clintons' huge support (for Ireland) and start trying to nitpick and saying, 'But she wasn't sitting down at the negotiation table' -- sure, we know she wasn't sitting down at the negotiation table," Ahern said.

“After suffering criticism from rival Obama's campaign and Protestant politicians in Northern Ireland, Clinton this month backed off language that suggested she was ever involved in the 22 months of negotiations that preceded the Good Friday pact. But Clinton still suggests that she wielded a hidden hand over the diplomatic triumph.

"I wasn't sitting at the negotiating table, but the role I played was instrumental," she said in a March 13 interview with National Public Radio.

“Clinton's campaign has distributed statements backing up her claim from Nobel laureate John Hume, the Catholic intellectual heavyweight of the peace process, who credited her with making ‘countless calls and contacts,’ and leaders of Sinn Fein, the party that former President Clinton helped to bring in from the diplomatic cold caused by Irish Republican Army violence.

“In Northern Ireland, the endorsements from Hume, Sinn Fein and Ahern are broadly recognized as reflecting Irish Catholics' desire for maximum international sympathy, specifically from the U.S. The retired Hume, in particular, boosted his clout by carefully cultivating friendships with U.S. politicians, chiefly Democrats. For them, a President Hillary Clinton offers the best chance of a return to the pro-Irish policies of her husband, who broke with decades of State Department deference to Britain, an approach resumed under George W. Bush."

Peggy Noonan attempts to read the minds of the press corps that covers Clinton and comes to some interesting conclusions: "I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will. ... Many in the press get it, to their dismay, and it makes them uncomfortable, for it sours life to have a person whose character you feel you cannot admire play such a large daily role in your work. But I think it's fair to say of the establishment media at this point that it is well populated by people who feel such a lack of faith in Mrs. Clinton's words and ways that it amounts to an aversion. They are offended by how she and her staff operate. They try hard to be fair. They constantly have to police themselves.

“Not that her staff isn't policing them too. Mrs. Clinton's people are heavy-handed in that area, letting producers and correspondents know they're watching, weighing, may have to take this higher. There's too much of this in politics, but Hillary's campaign takes it to a new level."

What will the folks at the DNC think of the fact that Bill Clinton called McCain a moderate?

Per NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli: "Taking a broad view of presidential contest, Bill Clinton told audiences across central Pennsylvania today that all three remaining presidential candidates are “appealing in their own way.” He argued again that John McCain represents a tough general election matchup for Democrats, at one point even praising the Republican nominee for being a “moderate.”

“Most of us in this room presumably are Democrats,” he said at a stop in Lewistown, his fourth of five during the day. “But I have to tell you, I think Senator McCain is a very admirable person. … And he -- in Republican circumstances, he qualifies as a moderate because he was against torture, for campaign finance reform, and didn’t think global warming was a myth.”

Per NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger, with the glow of a disco ball shining down on her, Chelsea Clinton took the stage at Woody’s, a gay bar in Philadelphia, Friday evening and discussed everything from HIV/AIDS prevention to the highlights in her hair.

Clinton spoke as part of a National Stonewall Democrats forum for presidential candidates. She followed a conference call that featured Obama supporter Melissa Ethridge, who was largely ignored as the crowd chatted away.

At one point, when discussing prescription drug prices, a man yelled “F**k Bush,” to which Chelsea replied, “We need to get him out. I’m not interested in that.” The crowd erupted, and Clinton tugged at her hair, grinning. “That just came out, that part. But I was actually making a serious point.”

TIME's Halperin and Carney look at Clinton's chances, "The question of who emerges from the primary season as the party nominee is not usually a subjective one. There is a process, however convoluted, through which candidates amass delegates; after the last state has voted and the numbers have been tallied, the one with the most delegates wins. This year is different. The two massively popular candidates have both earned large numbers of delegates, resulting in a situation in which neither can realistically obtain the required number of elected delegates that will put the candidate over the top.

“Given this unusual turn of events, the Clinton campaign has seized the chance to promote an argument ground not in numbers but in sentiment: it is asking superdelegates to make a subjective decision about which candidate is best positioned to win the White House in November. The first exhibit of its case is demographic. "I've obviously done very well with women, who are a majority of the electorate," Clinton explained to TIME. "I've done very well with Hispanics. I've done well with older voters. We have to anchor our electoral map in the states that [Democrats] must win, and I think I'm in a good position to do that."

“There's a flip side to this as well--the argument that Obama is dangerously weak among key Democratic and swing constituencies. The Clinton campaign has been raising questions about Obama's ability to win white blue-collar voters in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania and Hispanics in places like New Mexico and Colorado--all swing states that will most likely decide the election."

The New York tabs are starting to circle Clinton. The New York Post dubs her “Has-been Hill.” But, as we’ve noted before, if Hillary were to win North Carolina, things would change big time.

Hillary, if you can judge a person by the fellow who inhabits his pulpit, might you also be able to judge him by his close, personal friends?

Law partner and buddy Webb Hubbell -- prison.
Business partner buddy Susan McDougal -- prison, pardoned by Bill.
Business partner buddy Jim McDougal -- sleazebag saved from prison by madness.
Political crony and successor as Ark. Gov. Jim Guy Tucker -- prison.
Cattle futures advisor and countless other hacks and cronies from Arkansas -- prison.

Like you, Hillary, I won't pass judgment on others. I can only say these people wouldn't be MY friends.
News flash...Hillary is not going to win North Carolina or Indiana. This race is over in June
Not that her staff isn't policing them too. Mrs. Clinton's people are heavy-handed in that area, letting producers and correspondents know they're watching, weighing, may have to take this higher. There's too much of this in politics, but Hillary's campaign takes it to a new level."

Not surprising and explains alot...right Guys (MSNBC)
I was wondering when someone would bring up the whole Arkansas mess and her associates from that.  I'm amazed it hasn't been more of an issue with all the nonsense about associates, friends and endorsements.  Then there's the issue of her ability to recall important or remarkable events with accuracy.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all goes from here.  I'll just sit back and watch the show.

Once again HRC proves she knows nothing about the economics of health care. The answer is simple, deregulate the construction of hospitals and abolish the AMA's role in producing doctors. We have too few hospitals and the ones we have look more like palaces then functioning medical centers. We also have the American Medical Association acting like some kind of mafia in the control and distribution of doctors. Next, open up the pharmacuticals to competition, quit letting them import drugs from China and selling them to us at inflated prices. Once you've done this restore the idotic contractions that Bush has laid on the availability of medicare and medicade and expand the program to anyone making less then 50 or 60 grand a year. Healthcare cost will drop and you can insure the poor by taxing the CEO's and the like of this country who are siphoning off trillions every year!
Of all the discussions out there comparing the two Dem candidates, the overseas experience debate is the silliest of them and a huge waste of time.

What it comes down to is that ANY First Lady is an emissary of the United States and of the President of the United States. Bill Clinton, arguably, gave more responsibility to Hillary than any President did for a wife/first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt.  Hillary's recognizability around the world, strengthened by 6 years in the Senate far outweighs and trumps a 4-year US Senator who has spent 2 of those years running for President and who has STILL not been vetted.

This is a no brainer.

Hillary is a liar. She lied about her role in the Northern Ireland peace process, She lied about NAFTA, SCHIP and BOSNIA. What a role model! Once a liar, always a liar.

I have to agree with Margaret from Columbus, Ohio. Hillary is recognized around the world. She is recognized for pathological lying, for being dishonest, and for being untrustful. Now they are watching to see if the U. S. Government is for sale to the "Hillary Gang of 21".

This lady is so divisive and polarizing, she makes Bush almost seem non-partisan.
The longer this goes, it seems like the more Clinton will embarrass herself.
Saying that Obama has still not been "vetted" is another Hillary scam. "Vetted" is really a code word for "raked over the coals" and describes what Hillary thinks any candidate should have to endure. Being "vetted" has nothing to do with anyone's potential for leadership, integrity or knowledge of the issues. Constant harping about “experience” is just as ridiculous. Exactly what “REAL” experience has Hillary had? She has a reputation but that is not “experience”. As first lady, she did not hold a security clearance, she did not participate in formal negotiations as a credentialed diplomat and she failed at health care reform. She has “embellished” her role in the White House and in the Senate. Where are the 200,000 jobs promised to New York State? Her integrity is questionable over accounts of enduring sniper fire and promises broken such as never using her senate seat as a stepping stone to the presidency.

I wish there were a kinder way to point these things out but there just isn’t. Hillary supporters, I know this is a tough reality, and I’m being sincere, but please try to think about life after Hillary and closing ranks to support Obama.
Peggy Noonan is a smart lady.

Clinton may choose to ignore her negatives, I doubt the superdelegates will.

I am voting both FOR Obama but AGAINST Clinton.  I continue to not understand why anyone sees her as anything but a deeply flawed candidate.

Woman for Obama 08
Interesting developments - the longer we go - the more we see behind each candidate.  I am dismayed by the lack of credibility in both candidates. I am dismayed by the support each gathers daily. We really are are judged by the friends we keep.  Makes McCain look better with each passing day. We definately missed the boat and should have courted Colin Powell, probably the last man in politics that I have respected.
HILLARY, AND HEALTHCARE.

When Milton Hershey failed at one financial specultaion, he accepted it, and turned his sights toward another. This pattern repeated itsself many times. Finally, his wife divorced him, just before he hit-it big in the chocolate industry.

The point is, Hershey had the common sense to let-go, and try something new. His wife should have wisely stood by him.

In stark contrast to Hershey, Hillary suggests the best choice for us, is to continue to follow her lead, regardless of her failures, time and time again. Well, the answer is no.

Hillary, we want a divorce.

Pulling for Obama '08
Regarding Hillary's mandatory health plan; at 10% of our total income this mandatory insurance will cost more than many of us are paying today.  I see that those of us with good paying jobs will be paying for the insurance of those who do not work or have lesser paying jobs. I say NO.
That Noonan article was truly insightful.  Let's hope that the superdelegates begin to read the writing on the wall...

I should hope that most objective observers see the utter desperation that the Clinton campaign has now resorted to. I think that Hillary, like Noonan said, can't believe that she is being beaten fair and square by someone the Senator considered a non-threat to her inevitble ascension to the presidency.  So, being unprepared to lose, Clinton has now admittedly thrown the kitchen sink at him in a "scorched earth" offensive.  It seems she could care less that this protracted fight is weakening the party for November.  Meanwhile, she insults the intelligence of many people when she acts like she's doing this so that everyone's voice can be heard.  Nonsense.  If the shoe were on the other foot, and Obama were behind (with no chance to catch up) in the delegate count, if Obama were clamoring to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida counted, she would be calling for him to step down for the good of the party. She could care less about the voice of the people...
I still want to see Hillary's 2000 to 2006 tax returns. It is obvious now that there is a 'deal breaker' in those returns and she will have to be forced to release them. I would think that at this point even her supporters would want to see them. Hillary has made a huge issue of not releasing them.
“I’m a big believer in raising tobacco taxes,”.

How do you think that will play in Winston-Salem?

-
The real problem that Hillary has set herself up for is that in the future every country that she visited as first lady will feel slighted as "too poor, too dangerous, or too unimportant" if and when she becomes leader of the free world. (How does visiting only poor, unimportant and "Dangerous" countries qualify as important international experience?)
Isn't this commentary by Peggy Noonan interesting? For all you Clintonistas, this summarizes the feelings of the press that has covered Hillary these past 16 years. Kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it? Or not?

Peggy Noonan attempts to read the minds of the press corps that covers Clinton and comes to some interesting conclusions: "I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. Kind of says that you better go along with Hillary or Penn's Ministry of Propaganda police will get you.
I watch the pbs news hour mostly everyday, and after watching both Clinton and Obama's speeches, they were almost identical. The candidate of 'change' you people worship, is at best, a step up from the liar Clinton. We all know the Clinton's are criminals, but they get away with murder, literally.Your candidate Obama hasn't even finished his first term in the senate. When he "officially" became Barack, instead of "Barry", he made a conscience decision, when he joined Trinity church, he made a conscience decision, only now he truly denounces Wright, give me a break. Obama is nothing more than a "typical" politician, only with less experience than the other candidates.I truly believe his associations will come back to haunt him come november and rightly so.You people need to come out of the ether before it's too late. WAKE UP america, this isn't a popularity contest, this is electing a president to lead our country.Obama calls himself the "unifier", but his actions and associations say otherwise.
I am just so tired of reading/watching the media, including the entire political team on MSNBC favor one candidate the way they favor Obama.  Call Hillary's character what you want, she is who she is, political, calculating, driven at what ever costs... but to be blinded that Obama is not the same is just foolish.  If Obama was so amazing, so moving, so influencial... we would have read more accomplishments, stronger accomplishments, life changing...economic strengthening accomplishments..but all we see/ hear are "hopes" "dreams" "wishes".  Not that those aren't important..but where is the substance.  Its also noteworthy of lately how Obama's demeanor has changed since the attacks on his judgement...and his flip/flopping on what he says he will do and what his aides say he will end up doing if elected.  Obama is no better... for if he was so great, he would have been able to beat Hillary by great numbers than just 120+ delegates out of 2000+ delegates.  He can't even dramatically garner overwhelming support from Democrats, how can he win the general, especially with how his shine is fading under these initial attacks.  PS- Chuck Todd and team... either join the Obama team officially or learn how to be journalists who fairly report the news/ facts without personal biases (and then call the team at CNN...especially Anderson Cooper to do the same)
I am a black female and I am having a hard time with the thoughts of having a "Bush-like" John Macain or "inexperienced" Obama as President. So if Hillary is not on the ticket,I will pass up voting in the general election. I am also having difficulty with the way the media has convinced so many people that Hillary is not a caring and honest person while believing that everything that comes out of Obama's mouth is gospel. Americans,of all races and gender need to wake up and realize that the news media and the democratic party leaders are throwing our future away when they deny citizens in Flordia and Michigan a right to vote, and if they continue to support all of the negative press about Hillary Clinton. Women all over the world are watching how Americans and men treat women in the U.S. This is a democratic society and we want to see the primary election process go down to the wire. The longer it proceeds the more we learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the next president of the U. S. So stop asking Hillary to drop out. If she drops out too soon, a lot of her supporters will drop out too.
Peggy Noonan is NOT a "smart lady." She makes off-the-wall statements without any basis in fact... and not just about Hillary. In fact, I once sent an email to a news show complaining about just that... aka looney tune comments. On these talk shows she will say anything to keep the spotlight... and she always interrupts others to go off topic so we can be showered with her "insight." Give me a break.

But Halperin and Carney are real journalists who gives realistic analyses without letting political ideology get in the way. Too bad Noonan was given equal status to a professionals like Halperin and Carney.
Margaret, (Columbus Ohio)

You are right that this is a no brainer.

Of Senator Clinton's 35 years experience, 46% has been spent in honorary, ceremonial positions (First Lady US and Arkansas), 46% has been spent on seven political campaigns (Five for her husband and three for herself) and 8% of her experience has been as a young person registering voters and US Senator.

DON'T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. "Carpe diem" (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see's a beautiful world of  plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it's time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children's future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don't want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama's. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become  President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama  has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON'T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton's offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama's place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton's have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton's. Only the Clinton's are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

"This is not a game" (Hillary Clinton)

Sincerely

jacksmith...
"Chelsea, how scared were you when you were running from the sniper fire?"

"THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!"
Barack and Hillary are the same sleazy politicians, but I think Barack is sleazier. He has been in denial that he never knew about his pastor's anti-American and racist preachings. He was hoping that no one will find out about his evil pastor, but he got caught. Thank goodness that somebody exposed this evil truth about Barack and his pastor. Why can't he admit that he knew all along about his pastor's anti-American beliefs, and didn't do anything about it. It is obvious that he agrees with him. BHO chose and joined this pastor's church (with large and extensive congregation)and became Christian as a political move. He used this church as his means to gain political clout. And because of his high political ambitions, he sucked up to this pastor in exchange for his and his parishioners' support. That's why the pastor's anti-American and racist remarks donot bother BHO. And that is why BHO cannot disown his pastor. They have an agreement.

So choosing between the lesser of 2 evils, I will vote for Hillary. At least, she admitted her "misremembrance" about Bosnia. At least she was courageous enough to go to a dangerous warzone. We know all about Hillary's negatives. But her positives far outweigh her negatives. If she doesn't win the nomination, I will vote for McCain. I can never vote for such a sleazy politician like BHO and who is also anti-American, racist, and one with radical muslim roots. There is too much that we don't still know about him. We cannot trust the most powerful position in the world to this unknown highly ambitious sleaziest politician. Please, Americans, donot be blinded by BHO's sugar-coated rhetorics, false hopes and lies.
I am just horrified to see what a witch hunt experience Hillary Clinton is going through. Everyone knows in their guts that she is the most qualify person to be our president but NO! She is a woman.
Wake up people, let give her a chance, she will not dissapoint us
