Obama on Casey endorsement

Posted: Friday, March 28, 2008 2:05 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
PITTSBURGH -- Obama called Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey’s endorsement one of the most meaningful endorsements he's received on the campaign trail.

"You know, I did not press him on this endorsement, you know there were some people that I was nagging all the time," Obama said of reaching out to Casey. "Bob I thought to myself, there's great reason for me to press him; I told him I'd love to have his support, but I understood that you know we're behind in the Pennsylvania polls. I just want to say it would have been easy for Bob just to stay out of it, just to stay neutral. I think everybody would have accepted that.

"But when he called me and said, ‘I think this is the right thing to do,’ it meant as much to me as any endorsement that I've received on the campaign trail," Obama added.

Casey introduced Obama and spoke to the potential of his leadership.

VIDEO: Watch Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey’s remarks while endorsing Barack Obama.

"This campaign is a chance for America, a chance for America to chart a new course, to go down a different path," Casey said of his endorsement. "A path, first of all, of change, a path of a new kind of politics, a path -- and finally a path of hope and healing."

He also said that he had spoken to Hillary Clinton, who's been endorsed by Gov. Ed Rendell, of his decision. "I want everyone in this hall today to know something,” Casey said. “I called Senator Clinton last night to tell her my decision and she was very gracious. And we know that she's a great senator; she's a great leader.”

He stressed that all Democrats were focused on winning the election in 2008 and heaped praise on Obama, saying that the "good Lord had blessed him with many gifts," adding that Obama had "the kind of judgment that's steady in the eye of the storm."

He will spend the next three days traveling with Obama through the state, an uncommon occurrence on the trail. Though Obama occasionally has surrogates with him, they rarely spend more than a day on the trail with him. He called Obama a "fighter," who started the race as an "underdog" -- something Pennsylvanians struggling with the economy understand well.

In a retooled and longer stump speech Obama spent a chunk of his time discussing the economy, emphasizing how the costs of the Iraq War have detracted from domestic priorities.

"If we can spend $10 billion a month rebuilding Baghdad, we can spend $10 billion rebuilding roads and bridges and schools right here in America," he shouted to wild applause.

He hit Clinton on her ties to special interests and repeated a version of a line he's given before, that the platform she's running on wasn't one that could beat McCain in a general election.

"Senator Clinton makes an argument about electability: ‘Well I, you know, I’m the person to take on John McCain.’” Obama said of her argument. "Now, the polls don't show that, but the argument is that because she’s been around in Washington longer that somehow that makes her better equipped, and I've gotta explain. Look, if the contest between McCain and the Democratic nominee is who’s been there longer, John McCain wins! John McCain wins!"

The audience at the War Memorial Center was clearly on Obama's side, chanting "Yes We Can!" and Obama's name repeatedly before and after he spoke.

To fellow Obama supporters: Stop bashing Hillary.

It is unnecessary. The race is over. Let's start the healing now. Let her campaign throw the mud, the sink, whatever ... just water off a duck's back. John McCain is the opponent, not Hillary.

It's over.
This is a great endorsement for Obama, even though he'll still probably lose there. But at least he's trying, unlike Clinton who thought if a state was too unworthy (i.e. too small), or too black (i.e. SC -- when she sent Bill instead) she wouldn't even show up.
Congrats Senator on gaining this endorsement! Senator Casey is right that your nomination will be that of change.......we're all hoping for the same thing! Good luck in PA!
I'm not saying disarm ... defend your candidate, defend our movement ... just don't get drawn into personal attacks on Bill, Hillary, or the millions of Clinton supporters we'll need in November.

Ours is the campaign to unify America.
Hope and healing... I like that new slogan.  Lord only knows after this party fight, we will need it against McCain.
Obama is slowly winning more and more Super Delegates

Hillary's Supers (Sen Cantwell) are starting to have buyer's remorse

Since 'Super Tuesday' Obama has gained 10 super Delegates for every 1 super Hillary has gotten

THAT tells you something, the tide is turning...
The party is deciding on Barack Obama as our standard bearer

Time to move on and leave the past (Billary and corruption) behind.

CHAMELEONS ONCE SEEN, AND THE PERILS OF LIZARD POLITICS....

With Obama it's not really an empty suit, it's multiple suits.  The problem with chameleon's are that regardless of the color of suit they wear today, behind the charade of colors, it's still scaly, cold blooded, calculating, clever, opportunistic, and always trying to blend into the surroundings, it's how they stay alive....

This does not sound like a new kind of politics to me, maybe I'm like the liberal pundits and latte Democrats say, about those that don't agree or see things the way they do.  So maybe, I'm as blind as a bat, or blind in one eye and cannot see out of the other, or have two good eyes but still don't see... In that, I don't understand what the "New Messiah" is really saying.  That indeed yes alas, I need "them" to explain it to me....yet again.

But as anyone knows, once you see the chameleon, and put a good eye on him, it's hard for the chameleon to fade back, melt into the back ground, that had so carefully gave the chameleon cover, through color.... It doesn't matter where he moves, jumps, swims, crawls, walks, or scurries.  Your eyes follow, and see the chameleon for what he is.... all the gifts of camouflage that so delicately hid his image are gone.....

We see you Obama, you can't fade into the background anymore.  You ultimately have to be "somebody," someone with an identity.  If you can't define what that is, then it is up to others to define it for you....

Your remarkable success in this realm of "lizard politics" has also been your greatest failure, in that nobody really knows who you are, too much blending here and shading there.  The blank slate that you claim you are... is there, to be colored in, because you have refused to color it yourself....

For those of us who have followed this Presidential Campaign, fairly closely, there has always been an undertone of fear, associated with the Obama campaign.  All those words, words, words, especially in the beginning so lacking in substance, quasi preaching cadence.... Quotes like "we are the ones we have been waiting for."  A new day, a new dawn, a new era...

folks when it comes to politics and religion there ain't nothing new under the sun.... it's all old hash. Old glitter repackaged and placed in a new box, but when one opens the box, it's just another lizard, a lizard who thought he could be king...

Would anyone like a beer... I use to like wine, but I am losing my taste for it.

Francis Crosby.

Go Obama....Go!

Yes We Can!!

I agree with 40 years. Time to stop pounding on Hillary. She and Bill are worn out. Their mistakes are piling up. Obama's campaign and all of us supporting it now just need to keep reminding this nation every day of what a powerful force for positive change our candidate offers. If the Clintons choose not to behave better than they have been since they started their "kitchen sink" nonsense, we should simply just ignore them. Like 40 Years says above, "It's over!" Let's show some compassion for Hillary at this point and hope they keep their negatives down until this race concludes in June.
Change, yes we can, etc. etc. All talk and no substance. The typical liberal democratic thing to do is tax and spend, to fund these grand ideas. This country is in a recession as it is, throwing more money at the problem, is not the answer. We need a moderate fiscal policy, not left wing liberal.Just where do you Obamacans think all this money is going to come from? Our pockets. NO WE CAN'T!
I doubt anyone wants to bash Hillary, but she's engendered alot of hard feelings with her campaign tactics. She needs to chill, keep it civil and let the race run it's course without further damaging our chances in November.

As far as Casey goes, it's a pleasant surprise. I wasn't too thrilled about him back in 2006, but he's proven to be a solid Senator thus far.
“I called Senator Clinton last night to tell her my decision and she was very gracious."

Too bad James Carville won't have anything as nice to say about you.
Just one more before the weekend. Why is it that when hillbilly gets a endorsement its plastered over the top of the heading at your web site in big letters while when Obama gets one you use the smallest print you have?????????????
Thank you, Senator Casey!!!

25 days and counting...
Is Mr Crosby a democrat? Can we disown him from the party all together? He belongs in a AA meeting and pls stay away from any alcoholic drink of any kind.
Hillary is good with policy and fighting to get what she wants.  She is not someone who can inspire and lead the American people.  She would not be a great president.

What she would be is a great Senate Majority Leader.  Someone who can fight to get things done.  Someone who is detailed and policy orientated.  She'd have a far better chance of getting a Health Care plan and other plans pushed through as Senate Majority Leader, with Obama as President.

Obama would be better leading and inspiring the public and repairing our image around the world, Clinton would not. Clinton would be better leading the Senate getting policy passed and fighting for that policy.  A VP slot would not be as powerful of a position as the Senate Majority Leader.  We're better off with a VP that is a foreign relations person like Biden or Richardson.

Imagine this.  Take whatever initiative you want.  Health care, SS reform, etc.  Imagine President Obama getting people inspired to support it, and Sen. Maj Leader Clinton fighting in the Senate to get it passed.

Best of both worlds.  Maybe something will actually get done for a change with both of them in charge.
Endorsing Obama has become a "fad."
The only reason people do it is because they don't want to be perceived as being racist, and they think they'll get somethimng out of Obama later on.
Super delegates take note; these people who are endorsing Obama may not even be in congress two years from now.
If powerful donors pull the plug on contributions to these turkeys, they are through!
Hell, they didn't get us out of Iraq like they said they would if we gave them a majority, anyway.
So what good are they?
Oh yes "change" is good.....maybe it's time to change the congress around, again.
Stay tuned folks.
Francis Crosby - I couldn't have said it better.  I know there are many Americans that feel the same way.  You hit it right on the head - fear.  That is what I think of when I think of Obama.  Thank you Francis for putting it into words.
Anti Reagness in Georgia - - - Time for more meds, dear, you're starting to ramble and say meaningless things.
A real news organization would report the news, unlike MSNBC.  Not once has MSNBC reported today that Obama said he would have left the church had Rev. Wright not retired.  This is the biggest bunch of crap after saying hin his major speech that he wouldn't disown him and that he sat there for twenty yeras but now he would leave because it's hurting his chances for the presidency.  Are you serious.  This is huge news.  the other networks of covering it because it's so hypocritical and yet MSNBC is trying to cover for Obama on this one.  I suggest people go to the other news websites and read up on it.
I thought the super delegates were to follow the lead of their voters. If PA goes for Hillary, will Casey have to change his vote?? As I said, they are all politicans. Do you really think they run for office
without giant egos on all sides. Anything to get elected. Our system is a total failure for we the people.
I am all for leaving Hillary alone.  There is no point in putting another Democrat down when we are facing a Republican backed by the current administration.  That same administration has spent billions on this stupid war in which America was lied to.

I'm not saying McCain is an enemy, had the man changed over to the Democratic Party in 2002, like he wanted too, I feel his views would be more in-line with what this country needs.  Instead, he stayed with the Republican party and his ambitions to become President superceded everything that this man use to stand up for.

Now, it's time for Americans to take back control of their country, their Liberty, and let Washington know who hired who.

But, in the end, people will be angry because their politician lost the primary and out of spite vote for the other party.  Thus, we will never see the change that this country needs.

Yes, I am an Obama supporter, but if he were to loose the primary I would have no problem voting for Hillary.  She has her flaws, mistakes, mis-spokes, and dirty past, but at least she's a Democrat.  I really hope that for the sake of this country that no matter who wins Obama/Clinton, that their constiuates will stay true to the party so that this country can finally see an end to the Dictatorship that will have been the last 8 years.
Francis Crosby, please stop the spewing of hate and fear.  It doesn't help anything.
No matter how many weaknesses Obama has and were to develop and the fact that he is just 'same ole, same ole' in a new package is irrelevant.  The AA community, as it did in the OJ case will make excuses for him and vote for him.  It's as simple as that. He is the 'Black Messiah'.
And the mighty Casey has struck out!
Jessie, Your lack of knowledge is showing. Print size...good grief. Are you one of those Obama supporters who think he's going to fire congress??

He said it on THE VIEW.  I'm sure ABC will cover it just fine.  Networks don't usually promote other networks through free publicity via news coverage...goofiness.
FREE AND THE BRAVE:
"The typical liberal democratic thing to do is tax and spend..."

Taxing and spending is better than just spending and spending like the Republicans have done for the last seven years.  You can thank your "compassionate conservative" moron-in-chief for the huge budget deficit and lack of corporate regulation that's tanked our economy.

Instead of regurgitating right-wing propaganda, try doing your homework and educating yourself on the realities of our flagging economy.  You might even find it enjoyable to think for yourself for a change.
LOL! No matter how dirty Hillary is,or how many lies she's caught in,the females that support her will continue to excuse HER. What a prioe to pay to have the first woman in the WH! Pitiful!!!!
Nicely said "40 years" (both times).. you too Steve -

Hope and Healing --

Obama '08
these super delegates are as hungry as we are for change!

obama 08!
Why are we arguing? It's not going to change the delegate count or the popular vote. The nominee will be decided by delegates. The SD are not going to overturn the will of the people. To think otherwise is simply a pipe dream.
Why not accept the outcome, and stop coming up with ways to change the rules? It's not going to happen.
To those who say they don't know who Obama is, I say he is perfectly clear about who he is. It's Clinton who changes each time she thinks it will get her a delegate. Yes, she's a fighter but now it seems she's more about the fight than the result. It's possible to disagree with Obama and his philosophy, but anyone who says he's unclear is spouting opposition talking points and has no clue.

To me this election is clear: if you want war, vote for McCain, if you want prosperity - literally and emotionally - vote for Obama. Clinton is just toughening him up for the general election.
Frre and Brave - You mean like the fiscally SOUND policies of our current Administration spending 12 BILLION dollars a month in Iraq? Talk about (liberal)spend and tax. You call it "trickle down" economics...that's right...trickling right down to the middle class paying $4 gal of gas. Vote for McWar and vote for 4 more years like the last 7! That's a smart idea......NOT! I'll stick with Obama.
And this helps Obama how?

Do you think these superdelegates are doing this because they believe Obama's lofty rhetoric and are lining up behind him because they feel uplifted?

No, they are asking Obama 'what can you do for me?'.

You don't think Richardson will be Secretary of State?
I have my pool going already.

This is politics.  All of these bloggers who are saying the superdelegates have seen the light and think Obama is the best - this isn't a high school popularity contest.  It is professional politics, where the name of the game is collecting IOU's.

Independent in Texas, Oh I guess Obama can spend all that money without taxes going up.

Oh I just saw where the Honorable Rev. Write is getting a 1.6 million dollar mansion.  Also, he got a line of credit for 10 million for unspecified reasons.
The honorable Reverend is all for the poor workin folk, not the rich whitey.

I seem to remember Michelles income going up by 200,000 in on stroke of the pen too.  Obama's friends and family seem to be coming into some money.  Oh, but Obama is a different type of politician.
I disagree with those who say quit pounding on Hillary and Bill. Unless and until she quits the race, she is the current opposition Obama must deal with. True, he should also daily address McCain, and he does.

But Hillary needs to hear daily not just from Obama's campaign but also from rank and file Democrats that we are fed up with her Nixon-Bush style campaign tactics and her campaign's frequent pronouncements of about how the rules should be rewritten mid-season so that she can steal the nomination.

As long as she is campaigning, she will continue to do damage to Democratic hopes for the election, and that can't be ignored. She must be isolated by other Democratic leaders or she will never cease and desist the damage she is inflicting on her own party, the institution that has been the vehicle for Clinton success and wealth all these years.
One would think she and Bill would feel some gratitude at this point in their lives, but there is no evidence for it in their behaviors. On the contrary, both the Clintons and their top campaign advisors appear to have a shared mindset akin to a royal court, with many of the negative consequences that kind of organizational environment fosters.

And that's about as far as you can get from the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.
Dear MP in Sugarland and other myopic race-baiters...

In October 2007 - a majority of African Americans favored Clinton over Obama - 57% to 33%.

There are a lot of reasons that has changed, but I doubt it has to do with a sudden realization that Barack Obama is black.

Nice response, btw, Indy in Killeen...

Kevin, that is because they didn't think he could win.  Now he has a chance, and if he doesn't, they will riot.

Obama's new politics.  Ha!!  He isn't even elected and all his associates and family just keep getting richer.  Please!  He is like all politicians.  Read my previous post about the honorable Rev. Wrong. and his new mansion.
To 40 years,

It's over!  Yet Hillary hasn't dropped out and endorsed Obama.  What did Bill say.  If you can't take a pounding, then stay out of politics.  I thought that they, the Clintons, have "saddled up."
The Clintons and their henchmen make it easy for Obama supporters with their idiocity. What is good for the goose...
I see the comments regarding Obama are particularly full of fear and bigotry today. That's really sad. I know most of it is coming from neocons and ex-cons but some it is coming from fellow democrats. Please try to refrain from this kind of discussion because it only shows the weakness of your own arguement. If you can't conduct civil discourse, maybe you shouldn't bother to comment. It only makes YOU look racist and paranoid.
I agree with the other Obama supporters on this board.  Lets stop bashing Hillary and her supporters and start focusing on the general election against McCain.  McCain is getting a free ride in the media and is trying to pick off Obama's supporters.

We can't let that happen if we want to end Bush's third term in the White House!
I'm encouraged by all the talk of party unity. Though I do not believe that Hillary should win the nomination given her improbable chances of winning enough delegates, I do believe that she should not succumb to the pressure to drop out.

Let's let the voters of PA, NC, IN, and the other states (and PR) have their chance to vote and then let's go to the convention and make Senator Obama our nominee.
Bob Casey's endorsement of Obama is HUGE in PA. Having grown up in NE Penn. I am very familiar with the enormous influence that this family has. Casey is very respected and embodies the values of the majority here. Obama may still not outright win PA because of the insular culture here, but he will do much better. The contest is now over because of this seemingly minor endorsement. Obama will be the nominee.
the Truth...

I take it you are a clueless republican...

The dems may be a majority, but in order to get anything solved, they would need 2/3's of the vote to overturn a Bush veto.
If you don't support Obama you are a racist!!!  Name calling is not going to get people to not express their opionion. He is advocating Socialism!  America is supposed to be a Democracy.
Casey forgot to add:

''Now if we could just get this Puerto Rican governor[and Obama Super-D], and the feds that are crawling all over him off our backs.....''

Next stop: Pennsylvania.
Occasionally the times pick the candidate, not the other way around.  It is then up to the individual to heed the calling, or decline.

In 1992 it was clearly Mario Cuomo's time.  Nobody had even heard of Bill Clinton.  Cuomo didn't run.

In 2000 it was Colin Powell's time.  He would have won.  But he chose not to run.

In 2008 it is Barack Obama's time - and he has heard the calling.  He will win a great victory and will make Americans proud again.  And if you think the crowds are big on his campaign trail, wait till he goes overseas!

By the way, another newcomer from Illinois heard the call at a time when we really needed him.  What would have happened to the United States without Abraham Lincoln?
Barack is very consistent in his comments regarding Pastor Wright.  If you recall, when the issue became a major point of discussion a few weeks ago, Barrack stated that he was made aware of THESE inflammatory statements (as shown in the looping videos) just last year.  And when asked why he continued to attend Trinity Church he stated that Pastor Wright was in the process of retiring.

So today he is stating that IF Pastor Wright had NOT retired AND IF Pastor Wright had NOT accepted responsibility for the effect his statements had on individuals, he would have felt uncomfortable at that church--implying he would perhaps have left.

The point is that Pastor Wright DID retire so there was no point in leaving the church.  But if Pastor Wright had changed his mind and not retired, then Barrack would have taken a different position.

I think most people are hearing what they want to hear in these statements.  And if your agenda is to find inconsistencies, then you can find that in the most consistent statements by not viewing the complete picture.

Please do a little thinking and fair comparison of statements before speaking, unless your agenda is less than honorable.
I totally agree that it's time for us Obama supporters to stopped bashing Sen. Clinton.  I’ve made the commitment to stop bashing Sen. Clinton myself.  Since signing up on the my.barackobama.com website, I’ve had posted on my page the statement “Sen. Clinton reminds us that she spent eight years in the White House.  Well, so did the pastry chef.”  Now I don't think that was a particularly harsh statement, but I took that statement down today anyway.  Let the healing begin!
