Obama's charm offensive in PA

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Obama has launched a charm offensive in Pennsylvania, forgoing days packed with town halls and cheering crowds at rallies to make small unannounced stops that take the locals by surprise.

Case in point, trying not to strike out in Pennsylvania to Clinton, Obama went bowling Saturday night at Pleasant Valley Lanes in Altoona, five minutes from a hot dog shop that he had visited earlier in the day.

When Obama walked in with Sen. Bob Casey, who recently endorsed him, locals stopped munching mid-fry to stare. The presidential hopeful shook hands, posed for pictures and then joined local Roxanne Hart to bowl a few frames.

"I haven't bowled in 30 years," Obama declared before putting on size 13 1/2 shoes. Casey joined in, and the two rolled. Casey's ball went into the left gutter; Obama's rolled into the right. And so it went, though the locals didn't seem to mind the poor performance. Little kids offered advice and joined in the game. Casey managed to improved steadily, though the last time he bowled was in high school. Obama's balls on the on the other hand meandered their way into the gutter time and time again.

"My economic plan is better than my bowling!" Obama declared at one point to the crowd that had gathered around the lane, growing with each frame as patrons texted and called friends and family to see the political spectacle.

Eventually, in the seventh frame, Obama made a spare, cleaning up one pin left standing with his second ball. He started chanting, "Yes I can!" and a few in the crowd joined in. He quit while he was ahead, signing two bowling pins for the owners before leaving.

The stop was one part of a new offensive by the candidate to find a way to connect with voters outside of events that appear filled to the brim with his own supporters.

At Altoona's Original Texas Dog restaurant yesterday, the campaign planned a round table with three women at the local stop. Munching on hot dogs while talking health care is much more "man of the people" than shouting, "I love you back," to adoring, screaming crowds.

Obama's deficit in Pennsylvania polls may cause some to raise eyebrows at the new tactic, but at a press conference yesterday Obama said that the length of time offered by Pennsylvania's April 22 primary allowed him to campaign at a more "leisurely pace." The rallies and town halls would come, he promised.

At that same press conference, Obama was asked how he would appeal to voters in Western Pennsylvania when he "bombed" with voters in Eastern Ohio, a similar demographic group that he tried to reach out. Obama simply said that he hadn't been in Ohio enough to win them over.

But the events he had in Ohio were serious affairs, focused on four to five town halls, roundtables, and tours of plant factories per day -- designed to make the candidate appear serious and focused on the economy. It was your standard campaign fare, and it didn't help him in the state.

But it's questionable if voters will remember Obama talking about the economy -- or him feeding a baby calf from a bottle like he did at Penn State this morning when they open their local paper or turn on their evening newscasts.

The new efforts, Obama and his aides have said, are focused on trying to get voters to know Obama better. The Clintons, they like to say, are well known here and their support runs deep. Despite the small stops, Obama has said that his message will stay the same, and there's a definitely an economically themed component to most of his stump speeches.

But one has to wonder, as Obama left  a Sharky's CafĂ©, a sports bar in Latrobe, talking about Yuengling with a local, if the goal isn't so much to introduce Obama to voters as it is to introduce a different image of him.

"You know I got a beer down there. What do they cal it.. a Yuengling?" Obama said to a local man.

"Yuengling! Like you didn't know," the guy joked back.

"Trying a Pennsylvania beer, that's what I'm talking about. Is it expensive though?" Obama asked. "Wanna make sure it's not some designer beer or something."

He shook a few hands and took a few more sips of beer before he walked out, the headline writing itself: "The Candidate You Can Drink a Beer With..."

I want to see obama and the secret service play bastetball againest penn that would be cool
I would love it if OBAMA Upset Hill in Pa. That would make me so HAPPY

She is a disgrace

That Iowa boy running things in PA for Obama may just put a hurtin' on Hillary yet.
Good to see Obama cool , relaxed ... and looking presidential .
i second the basketball idea..that would be very cool!
Do you realize that the title to your article states that Obama is offensive to Penn? Geez! I thought you were the literary professionals.
Don't sell the unexpected short....who wouldn't be impressed with a candidate who suddenly showed up to drink a beer, shoot some hoops, bowl a frame or just say "hi?"  Local candidates do it all the time - because it gets people off the fence. Besides, how often do you get to see Obama as a regular guy?
That's the ticket. He needs to let ordinary people see him in ordinary life, away from all the spectacle. Besides, he's got more charm in his pinky than What's Her Face has in her whole body.

At least Barack knows how to lose gracefully!
A typical white woman who loves Obama!
I hope that Pa. doesn't fall for a forked tongue sweet talker that
has an spiritual advisor who preaches hate about america.  We love
america and we want someone experienced . we know and love
our country. Hillary has a proven record and she will keep on fighting for us americans.
First class.  The guy is a real gentleman.
The bus tour was definitely a good plan. Especially when you have heavy hitters like Senator Casey, Franco Harris and Jerome "the bus" Bettis with him.

First Read-- Please quit saying that Obama did not win eastern Ohio over. Report the whole truth. OH was the victim of Rush Limbaugh's Chaos trick. I live in Northeast Ohio and can tell you I heard people saying they were voting for Hillary because Rush told them to. Either report the whole story or leave OH out of the equation. It's still a sore subject for us. The other factor in OH was the ice storm that closed highways at 5pm, including the Ohio Turnpike because of dangerous driving condition. First Read -- you are constantly presenting yourselves as Billary supporters and its getting tiresome.

OBAMA  2008
twocanpete that IA boy grew up in MN.  You know another one of those states that don't matter.
The title of this article almost sounds like you're trying to stress that Obama's charm is offensive...rather than he is on the offensive using his chamrm.
How can you not like this guy? While Hillary does everything with a defiant fist, even when she doesn't need to, he takes it down a notch--which is really refreshing to say the least. Come on PA, let's give Obama the votes he needs to get the nomination. If we can do it in VA you can do it in PA!!
Wonderful story. I bet the woman he bowled with, Roxanne Hart, votes for him.
How great for the locals to see their next President of the United States! Good for him.
Looks like Obama, has taken the majority of delegates from Texas...So who won that contest?

Can you just try to imagine Hillary Clinton bowling?

It's like trying to imagine her sitting behind the
desk in the Oval Office.

Of course, I'm sure that she used to sneak into the
Oval Office (why not, she was after all the First Lady) and sitting behind the desk, saying "This is
MINE, it's MINE, and I will have it!"

Not...
Hil tried to bowl earlier in the day but the sniper fire was too damned intense!
Obama '08
HA! obama = bush. The guy you can have beer with
Obama is a good guy. The more people know him and his ideas the more they will vote for him.
Hey mark...give the guy a break can't he campaign and have some fun too?  Does he have to be A+ in every thing.  If he did you would complain about that too...he's Mr Perfect.  Where is the coverage of the B'Ball game he played today?
Don't know why I am posting this, my comments are NEVER posted. Obama changes for whatever suits him.  He lies too.  How will the American people really know who he is if he keeps changing for the circumstance?????
Tiger Woods Look Out!!!
See only goes to show, dodging bowling balls can be very dangerous.
Gotta know him to know he's the right guy!  Hope somebody got his bowling score!
Barack Obama, the man for all the seasons and all the right reasons!!!
Go Hillary! I think Obama may try his charms in Pennsylvania but sure hope people can see and think beyond his salesmanship and speech-making talents and get him to answer the critical questions he's managed to evade up to now.
I would like that guy from Countdown -Keith Olberman to  get a life.  He is so bias when delivering the news on the presidential race.
Obama is full of false hopes, pie in the sky dreams of yet very undefined realities...he scares me immensely with his associations that attract many that think the government is out to create genocide and unrest at home and he only backtracks and tries to polish over the negatives that are all to real...too bad th epublic is so despartate
Watch your headlines! I thought you meant Obama's charm was offensive to Pennsylvanians! I hope it's not!!! SS in VT
I think he will do well as there's plenty of time for voters to get to see and know him. Before he declared candidacy very few people actually knew who he is so this is time for him to close the gap.
Boy, I'm jealous LOL, he has time to travel around the State...meanwhile, here I am in CT, one of 22 on Super Tuesday.

Both candidates have the luxury of time to ampaign many different ways in Pennsylvania.  Why not take some time to get to voters in different ways...

I did see him at the Hartford Rally on Feb. 4th though.

Obama 08
Bowling and beer drinking, Hillary better watch out or she'll loose her biggest supporter Bill to the other side.
He connected with people when he worked on the streets of Chicago as a community organizer. His new tacktic will pay of. Go Barack!!
Obama is playing all of you for fools.  I have been to Pennslyvania many times and have always thought that the people I met there were smarter than to fall for his current"tactics" to win your vote. Use your head and se thru what he's trying to do.
Obaama is the MAN!
Look for an upset iN PENSYLVANIA......time is on his side.
Aswini, as usual you do a poor job of putting facts in context.

Obama was making headway in OH - he closed a 20% deficit to 5% in the days leading up to the OH primary, but then NAFTA-gate and the "3 AM" ad hit, he lost some of those gains and he lost the state.

He's got more time to work on PA, and other strategies to employ, though Hillary still has a lot of institutional advantages in PA, so it's still hers to lose.
Here in Pennsylvania, the voters are enjoying, Senator Obama's visit. As I try to do my part in the blog-o-sphere, I can hear constant coverage, coming from the T.V. in the next room, of the OBAMABUS as it meanders across the state. My husband knows the only way to tear me away from the computer is to yell, "hoonneey, Baraaarck"!

One such time when I ran in to catch some news, he, Jerome Bettis, Senator Casey, and the great Franco Harris, were climbing aboard what will be their mode of travel for quite a while. Now, I know what cheese'n
for the camera looks like. My candidate, and his distinguished travel companions, looked truly joyous, as they set out on their mission of hope.

Another time I came in to take a peek, Senator Obama was greeting, and shaking hands at a blue collar, hard hat, type work sight. The workers response to him was, respectful, interested, serious, and enthused.

I did'nt take note of the blogger's name, herein, that urged Senator Obama to conduct his Pa. tour thus. I don't know if your advice fell directly upon his ear. What is known, is that these posts make a difference. They are in the political air. Thank you for your knowledge, and insight.

March 29th, 2008Raw video of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's speech at a local Democratic senatorial district convention in Houston Saturday in which she was booed by the crowd, many of whom are in her district. Her speech was interrupted a couple of times as the crowd voiced its displeasure with her backing Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama.

Nice article for a change.  Obama can't bowl. Who would have thunk it.
Well:

We will see how this goes.

It can't hurt...I guess.  But it seems like he was really, really bad.

(smile)!

The smart thing about this "getting to know me" trip is that while it may not help for the primary, when he goes back through for the general election he will at least be familiar.

His campaign is always looking ahead, which is a good thing.
Now, I would like to see Hillary bowling with the locals as well!  LOL.  Maybe even playing basketball with Penn, Bill, Singer, and Wolfson against Senator Obama and his secret service?  Wouldn't THAT be something!!

I am happy to see Senator Obama truly relaxing while still getting out his message.  He will make a great President and Commander-in-Chief!!

Hey Obama: I havent bowl in over 30 years either. And i know that my economic plan is better than my bowling also......lol,lol,lol,lo
If the people of PA can get to know Obama at a more leisurely pace and more one-on-one like they did in Iowa, he has a chance to win there.

The funny thing with Hillary is that as people got to know her in Iowa, the less they liked her; the opposite was true of Obama.
I am so HAPPY to see Obama doing more one on one with people, I loved watching the rallies, but I know certain parts of country need him to be out there with them, rolling up sleeves, talking politics.  I LOVE that he changed his tactic with time to hopefully gain some ground on Hill.. in Penn   She pretty much knows she has the state won, but if he could win or even come close will cause her to pause, although she WILL NEVER QUIT, even taking it to the convention.  Dear lord, let's hope that doesn't happen.  Keep it up OBAMA you are the ONE  at the end of the day people will be so proud of their choice!!!!
Obama is presidential... Especially, no one can elect someone who dresses like Hillary. See the youtube videos on Hillary's fashion.... Bright pink pantsuits and wing tips the size of a 747... LOL
Go OBAMA
