Obama's charm offensive in PA

Posted: Sunday, March 30, 2008 2:12 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Obama has launched a charm offensive in Pennsylvania, forgoing days packed with town halls and cheering crowds at rallies to make small unannounced stops that take the locals by surprise.

Case in point, trying not to strike out in Pennsylvania to Clinton, Obama went bowling Saturday night at Pleasant Valley Lanes in Altoona, five minutes from a hot dog shop that he had visited earlier in the day.

When Obama walked in with Sen. Bob Casey, who recently endorsed him, locals stopped munching mid-fry to stare. The presidential hopeful shook hands, posed for pictures and then joined local Roxanne Hart to bowl a few frames.

"I haven't bowled in 30 years," Obama declared before putting on size 13 1/2 shoes. Casey joined in, and the two rolled. Casey's ball went into the left gutter; Obama's rolled into the right. And so it went, though the locals didn't seem to mind the poor performance. Little kids offered advice and joined in the game. Casey managed to improved steadily, though the last time he bowled was in high school. Obama's balls on the on the other hand meandered their way into the gutter time and time again.

"My economic plan is better than my bowling!" Obama declared at one point to the crowd that had gathered around the lane, growing with each frame as patrons texted and called friends and family to see the political spectacle.

Eventually, in the seventh frame, Obama made a spare, cleaning up one pin left standing with his second ball. He started chanting, "Yes I can!" and a few in the crowd joined in. He quit while he was ahead, signing two bowling pins for the owners before leaving.

The stop was one part of a new offensive by the candidate to find a way to connect with voters outside of events that appear filled to the brim with his own supporters.

At Altoona's Original Texas Dog restaurant yesterday, the campaign planned a round table with three women at the local stop. Munching on hot dogs while talking health care is much more "man of the people" than shouting, "I love you back," to adoring, screaming crowds.

Obama's deficit in Pennsylvania polls may cause some to raise eyebrows at the new tactic, but at a press conference yesterday Obama said that the length of time offered by Pennsylvania's April 22 primary allowed him to campaign at a more "leisurely pace." The rallies and town halls would come, he promised.

At that same press conference, Obama was asked how he would appeal to voters in Western Pennsylvania when he "bombed" with voters in Eastern Ohio, a similar demographic group that he tried to reach out. Obama simply said that he hadn't been in Ohio enough to win them over.

But the events he had in Ohio were serious affairs, focused on four to five town halls, roundtables, and tours of plant factories per day -- designed to make the candidate appear serious and focused on the economy. It was your standard campaign fare, and it didn't help him in the state.

But it's questionable if voters will remember Obama talking about the economy -- or him feeding a baby calf from a bottle like he did at Penn State this morning when they open their local paper or turn on their evening newscasts.

The new efforts, Obama and his aides have said, are focused on trying to get voters to know Obama better. The Clintons, they like to say, are well known here and their support runs deep. Despite the small stops, Obama has said that his message will stay the same, and there's a definitely an economically themed component to most of his stump speeches.

But one has to wonder, as Obama left  a Sharky's Café, a sports bar in Latrobe, talking about Yuengling with a local, if the goal isn't so much to introduce Obama to voters as it is to introduce a different image of him.

"You know I got a beer down there. What do they cal it.. a Yuengling?" Obama said to a local man.

"Yuengling! Like you didn't know," the guy joked back.

"Trying a Pennsylvania beer, that's what I'm talking about. Is it expensive though?" Obama asked. "Wanna make sure it's not some designer beer or something."

He shook a few hands and took a few more sips of beer before he walked out, the headline writing itself: "The Candidate You Can Drink a Beer With..."

Doesn't anyone give any thought to the fact that the MEN that we have put into the White House have made a really big mess of the economy.  I fee that a WOMAN should be allowed to give it a try.  After all, women have spent their lives balancing a budget, so who else would common sense tell you to elect.  HOORAY FOR HILLARY.
Hillary and Bill - Where are your tax returns? 2000 to 2007? Remember your Senate race slogan against Lazio in 2000? What are you hiding? How about some Presidential Library donor lists as well?  You will not be "vetted" until those documents are scrutinized by the press.

Also, Politico is running a huge story about the Clinton campaign NOT paying their bills to SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS for events early in the campaign!

Hopefully, the urban and suburban Philadelphians and Pittsburghers will stop the madness and elect Barack Obama as the nominee. Join the Movement!
The Clintons believe they own the People's White House, just like they believe they are DNC, instead of members of it. Very arrogant.
Barack Obama caught in another of his lies!..Washington Post actually publishes an article stating that the Kenya story about JFK and Obama's father was UNTRUE ... sorry, I lost my tinyURL link ... here's the long one. If you don't want to ues it, front page of washingtonpost.com ..http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/29/AR2008032902031.html?hpid=topnew
Guess I'm not a sports person, I thought your headline meant Barack was "offensive" in Pa. Could you word it a little differently?
Go Obama Go....
Obama could have this thing wrapped up now...all he has to do is get the supers delegates to back him...but he hasn't. He's already given the supers more than three times as much money as Clinton has...

If ending the race is so important to the party, why haven't the supers just decided to end it? What are they waiting for?

...it's what we're all waiting for....the unknowns about Obama.
Pro Obama people. Listen up, Obama cannot win in PA. Hillary will win by at least 15 points. Get over it with you wishful thinking. The people in PA will not be fooled by this empty suits charm. It's takes a lot more than charm and just "looking" presidential to run this country properly.
Obama's got a three-on-three contest in IN going.  if you register 30 new voters your name is put in the hat to play a three-on-three pick-up game with Sen. Obama (he's on the winner's team), against three high schoolers.
Yay!!!  With four weeks left before the PA
Primary, there is time for voters and candidate
to really get to know each other.

Plus, this gives the candidate some time to have
a little down-time and much needed sleep.

Good move Obama team!!
And who says Obama wouldn't be good at foreign policy?  Lessons on the campaign field!  McCain better be taking notes.
Hmmm Hill thinks PA a gimme-it would be nice if Obama wins.
Clinton TAX Return countdown - 16 days left !!
THIS BLOG SITE PICKS AND CHOOSES WHAT IT WANTS YOU TO SEE. I HAVE SENT IN NUMEROUS COMMENTS, WHICH ARE NEVER PRINTED.
Pick Me!
NOW, PA you can see he is human. The next thing you need to see he hasn't lied about his past records as a legislature.
1. Exxon’s choice was the lesser of two evils (research it).
2. He is a professor, ask the university.
3. He is not a Muslim, so what if is, don’t forget this is America, freedom of  religion
4. He stated clearly in his speech and on ABC’s the View, the Rev Wright position, believe me if is a terrorist or if Rev Wright is trying to over throw the government the would stop both. Think people!
5. Don’t feed into the xenophobia coming from Fox Noise (especially Hannity and Greta), Limbaugh, or any other xenophobic, fear mongering, ardent, zealot.
6. Her incompetent staff seldom gets it facts correct, including theirs i.e. Bosnia and NAFTA

Hey folks… I have submitted two comments to this blog (not this particular discussion/session) about Hillary: none has been published although I followed the rules. If this one doesn’t get to the blog either I will find another way… there are always other sources that would love to look at censored things—and their reasons.
Hillary is a mercenary. She doesn’t need small money contributions. Her husband is being honest: they need some small-time contributions to cover the big under-the-table money. As usual, Bill more easily expresses his emotions, the way he expressed if to Monica. But Hillary is the one that fumes underneath, to get the final result (like staying with her betraying husband to get power). In Freud’s view, Hillary is the one who waits for a long time to use the restroom.
Hillary is two faced: she supported the war, and now she acts like she is against it (without acknowledging her initial “mistake”). Why? Perhaps to get votes from both sides!
The American public loves honesty/integrity in their leaders. I prefer even McCain over Hillary, even if I am a Democrat.

Glad to see a light-hearted side of Obama.

Got two things to say to the Penn. voters:
1-Bill and Hill are respeosible for NAFTA
2-Hill used NAFTA to help her get in the NY Senate

Please Penn remember this when you vote.

Obama '08
Whem PA folk got the chance to meet Obama to more they will appreciate him. This will be a shocker to hillary come April 22.
NAFTA, BOSNIA NIPPERS Deceit, 9/11 lies will catch-up with her big time.
After Hillary's story telling, I wonder how anyone could believe anything she says.
oh, Obama is so great..   NOT!  All that glitters is not gold.  Hillary will win by a blow-out in PA, then expect some more of those skeletons to come out of Obama's closet.  This guy is just all talk.
..wait and see...

Go Hill !
I just came back from volunteering at the Obama rally at PSU, and there was a record breaking attendance.  People are definitely interested in Obama.  I was taking tickets, and people were clamoring about him bowling last night, and talking about feeding a baby calf at Penn State.  PSU is definitely Obama territory.  He just attracted 30,000+ people over Bill Clinton's 5,000 from last Thursday (same place).  I guess people are more excited to see the NEXT president than the FORMER president.  WE ARE...CHANGE!
What a phony!  And the whole time he was thinking, "All I have to do is smile and I can fool you idiots into voting for me.  Then when I get in the White House I can make all you honkies suffer"!
Since when is charm a bad thing?  I know that Hillary doesn't like it because she would never be described as charming, but how can that be a turn off to voters?  I don't get it.
i dont know about him saying that has not bowled for 30yrs .........that sounds like another ........... well wtever
Anybody notice that Senator Obama won Texas yesterday?  The county conventions were yesterday and with 86.51% of all delegates awarded, Senator Obama currently leads 55.91% to 44.09%, this gives him the State of Texas (by more delegates).  Check out the following link for more and the rest of the results as they come in:

Since Senator Obama won Texas, does that mean it isn't a BIG state anymore?  I am just curious.
We've already seen one "miracle" happen in Iowa, I'm thinking it could happen again in PA.  I think Obama's relaxed, calm demeanor and his refusal to bite all the bait that Hill's campaign has been sending  his way, are the best ways to demonstrate to the American people that he IS the one!  It doesn't seem to me that he's one that would wage war on just any old country in order to be seen as a strong commader-in-chief.
I'd like to see Hillary put a hurting on Obama's bowling efforts... I know she could.  She's got him beat every which way.   Go Girl!
Nice too see him not doing the usual campaign thing.  Like his style.
He will win only if the voters remember the Bosnia lie told over and over again by Hillary, sees her tax returns and her ear marks. Other than that, they will fall for the sympathy card that Hillary is banking on by telling people that THEY want her to quit. Of course we know about Senator Leahy's call for her to quit but who are the others? THEY WHO? Senator Obama came out and said immediately that she should NOT be asked to quit. Hopefully the people of Pennsylvania will do their homework. They've already impeached one Clinton in the (House of Representatives). Depending on the Peter Paul trial out in Los Angeles, the next Clinton could be hauled off to jail. Wake up people and do your homework!
I sit in my home day after day, week after week, month after month, and watch these two, Barack and Hillary campaigning.  I don't know how they do it.  It's hard to watch so much campaigning, I can only  imagine how grueling a pace it must be on mind and body of these two.  It almost feels like the one who is still alive in November deserves to win.
His ball rolled in the gutter - just like his campaign!
Aswini's posts here make me think she is on the Obama payroll.  Good heavens--could she be anymore enamoured of Obama?  I thought "First Read" was intended to be a little more newsworthy and analytical such that it would prompt the public to think and comment.  This might as well be "Peoples Magazine."
Some people (Obama) try so hard to ACT sincere whereas some people (McCain) ARE sincere. You decide who is best qualified to be President. You decide who is best qualified to be Commander-In-Chief.
Senator Obama also spoke to a crownd of 22,000 at a Penn State rally on Sunday afternoon.

I hope Obama continues to visit the small towns of Pennsylvania and connect with voters.  I know if he tries, he can win them over.  Go ahead Obama and win this nomination. (www.barackobama.com)
Casey is obviously showing Obama the lay of the land in Pennsylvania.  Time to have a little fun!

Thanks, Senator Casey, for the warm welcome!
I opened my local paper this morning (Daily Item, Sunbury, PA) and there was a great picture of Obama speaking at Penn State.  The headline read "Thousand Cheer Obama."  Yeah, maybe it was just another Obama love-fest, but here in Central Pennsylvania it was a beautiful site to see, and a terrific story to see in the paper.
Obama has such great potential. And Hillary's only real potential is more lies. We need more than just change....we need a chance at truth and integrity. Obama provides that, and Hillary is the perfectr example of lies and deception....like Bosnia, Ireland peace, etc.,
The bowling epitomizees the man--WEAK.

When will MSNBC report on the Wah. Post article detailing how Obama exaggerated and got WRONG the fact that JFK helped his father? Gee, does Obama lie? If he has Hillary that's what would be said. Does Obama get held to the same standard as Clinton ever? The answer is no. Hillary's misstep caused days of coverage and this stuff of much laughter and taunting. But Obama gets another pass.
What does Obama do when he knows he's not favored to win PA?  He goes to the PA heartland and listens to the people...bowls a few gutter balls and is not afraid to show weakness.  We could use a lot more of his humility.  I can't wait 'til he's president.
Go for it Obama, it does help to get out and know the people, give them a chance to tell you their ideas . I can remember when canadates came around to the farms and helped you get your hay in, may of only been a few bails but they were there and you talked.
Just be a person,Tell them what you want to do for them, just remember they want help but also have their pride and need to feel they are contribuating to the help all will get.Pride is a dangerous thing can turn against you, or can work for you. God Bless you
