Clinton: Not paying the bills?

Posted: Monday, March 31, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray

So does Clinton have a money problem? Apparently, the campaign is slow at paying bills, particularly for events. And some of these local vendors are actually warning colleagues about getting Clinton money up front. Per the Politico, “Hillary Rodham Clinton’s cash-strapped presidential campaign has been putting off paying hundreds of bills for months — freeing up cash for critical media buys but also earning the campaign a reputation as something of a deadbeat in some small-business circles.”

Moving the goalposts ... again? In Saturday’s New York Times, anonymous Clinton aides said if Clinton didn't win the Indiana primary, they'd urge her to get out. But if she narrowly wins Indiana but loses North Carolina, she'll have a hard time making up ground in the delegate count or the popular vote. There was one other quote that jumped out at us in this NYT piece: Rendell's bizarre claim on if rolls were reversed. “‘Just flip it for a second,’ Mr. Rendell said. ‘Let’s say Senator Clinton was ahead by about 110 delegates and ahead by less than 1 percent of the vote cast, and she and her supporters started to call on Senator Obama to get out. Just picture what the media would be saying. They’d be saying you’re being racist, you’re being everything in the world. It’s nuts! It’s nuts!’”

Really, governor? Really? There wouldn't be TWICE the pressure on Obama to get out than there is right now on Clinton? Rendell has been throwing around the race card easier than most folks of late.

The Los Angeles Times' Finnegan and Z. Barabak point out a fact that has gotten lost with many folks in the media who seem to have amnesia about the Clintons' role leading the Democratic Party in the '90s. "A complication for Clinton, as she courts superdelegates, is the rocky history that she and Bill Clinton have with many in the Democratic establishment. Obama portrays her as a Washington fixture, and after 15 years inside the Beltway -- eight of them as first lady -- the New York senator is very much steeped in the capital and its culture. So, too, are Clinton's campaign team and many of her political allies.”

“Even so, she and the former president have long had a more complex and difficult relationship with fellow Democrats -- especially those on Capitol Hill -- than might be expected for a couple who have reigned like no pair since Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Whether it was the botched effort to reform healthcare; tough votes on taxes, trade and welfare; the president's ‘triangulation’ against fellow Democrats; or the Monica S. Lewinsky mess, the Clintons often made life uncomfortable for their party peers during eight years in the White House.”

The New York Post has this headline: “Insult.” The story features Bosnians surprised or offended by Clinton’s sniper fire story, including the little girl who read Clinton the poem on the tarmac that day.

Bill Clinton is once again keeping as busy (if not busier?) schedule than the two candidates running: He hit Pennsylvania, California, and Oregon over the weekend, and he campaigns more in Oregon Monday and Montana Tuesday. Of course, the Montana stop is about sending the message that the Clinton campaign plans to contest the nomination through the last day of primaries -- June 3, the day of the Montana primary.

Wow, the payoff from that Bill Clinton-Richard Mellon Scaife sitdown a few years back continues. Check out this Scaife column about Hillary in Sunday's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the newspaper Scaife owns: "Her meeting and her remarks during it changed my mind about her. Walking into our conference room, not knowing what to expect (or even, perhaps, expecting the worst), took courage and confidence. Not many politicians have political or personal courage today, so it was refreshing to see her exhibit both.”

Meanwhile, Frank Rich -- per usual -- is tough on Clinton and wonders whether the Bosnia sniper-fire story is a watershed moment for HRC, which, apparently could explain the dramatic drop in her personal ratings in last week's NBC/WSJ poll.

I'm still not understanding why people in their right minds would want her for president?  She lies, cheats, doesn't pay her bills and has made it very clear that she will do anything to win (showing she cares more about her than the party or the country).

I just don't get it will someone please explain it to me!
Ed Rendell fits nicely into the Clinton campaign.

RUTHLESS.

No wonder he is involved in the Peter Paul vs Clinton campaign fruad trial that is coming up in April.

I'm sure the people is Pennsylvania don't even know about this.

Maybe they should be asking their GOVERNOR ED RENDELL about this.

DISGUSTING

Obama 08
No wonder HRC wants this race to continue.

She wants her donors to keep giving money so she can pay off her bills!!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahha!!!!!

Keep giving fools, keep on giving.

Obama 08
Is this how she plans to manage the economy as President? No thank you....
I think the Bosnia sniper-fire story SHOULD be a watershed moment.  However, I doubt in will for her hard-core supporters (who certainly overlook more than I can in still rooting for her).  But how about those people that are torn...?

The bill paying thing, if true, is very concerning to me.  That is hurting (in a very direct way) precisely the same people (small business owners) that she says she's trying to help.  Not to mention its very bad business practices.  Poor financial management continues to be a problem for this campaign.  If these people have not been paid in a timely fashion, I can entirely understand why their so angry.  This warrants more coverage as it bears (again) on her character, her truthfulness, and her ability to lead.

Rendell continues to paint HIMSELF in a bad light this campaign season...he seems to be digging a bit of a grave for himself.  He may be helping HRC with a subset of folks in PA.  But not nationally.  But this is just it...the HRC campaign has always focused on the next State (at least the next state she considers significant) and has consistently lost site of the big picture.

Women for Obama
Surprise, surprise. Clinton is jibbing the little guys.
If she really cared about the people who were struggling then she should pay her bills.
Of course not!
Hillary owes the people nothing!
It is the people that should be happy at the prospect of serving Her Royal Clintoness.
Didn't the Hillary team let these folks know that Hillary's campaign is a certified 501(c)3 operation.
Just wright it off.
Hillary has!
I can't say that I'm surprised by this.  Despite large fund raising numbers, the Clinton campaign has been notorious for frivolity in their spending.

1. I am suprised the Medi hasn't taken Ed rendell to task on the Race issue, reminder, before the S. Carolina Primary, Ed Rendell did state that White voters will not vote for a Black Candidate. The Media has dropped the ball on this one.

2. Hillary is broke and in the Red. If her campaign bounces a check, she should be arrested, like every ordinary individual who is going through a tough time at the moment.

3. With regards to Mellon Scaife, Hillary right now is willing to make a pack with the Devil, if she can get enough free news attention.
Governor Rendell fails to grasp this situation.  If the roles were switched and Senator Obama had lost 11 contests in a row and was behind by over 100 delegates with slim chances if any of taking the lead and all that he'd have party leaders begging and pleading with him to bow out and pledge full support for Senator Clinton.

Senator Clinton remains in this race because she's...well...Senator Clinton.  Substitute her name with the name of any other candidate in the race and we'd be calling this one "game over".
I have to be the voice of reason. If she can't manage her campaign how in the world is she going to manage the country???? By not paying bills, insulting people that don't support you, go negative whenever your back is against the wall, lie, cheat or change the rules when they don't suit you, threaten to tear the party up. Are the American people ready for this on day 1??????
In honor of this story, I just donated $30 ... to Obama.
Obama continues to get Superdelegate endorsements (Minn today), yet Hillary tends to lose them. Isn't this yet another SIGN to Hillary that she can't win?
Yes, I thought the Rendell comment was ridiculous also.  He's a perfect Clinton team member though.  He often makes comments like Wolfson and Penn.  You listen to him and say, "WHAT? Do you really think we're stupid?"
Hillary, and honesty do not get along together; recommending reading up on her mentor during the Watergate scandal; because of her lies, deceit, she was fired afterwards, because stealing files like those 900 FBI files started during the Watergate area, in which she stole those files as well, writing a brief so dishonest, that she would have been disbarred by any court.
As far as her not paying the bills: That is what we accountants call 'fudging the numbers', in which a dishonest business carries unpaid bills from months to the next, providing a financial statement to a bank or other institution ta make it appear all is well, mostly to receive loans etc..
It's a dishonesty way of doing business, sleazy, and tells more about character. She loves to spend other peoples money except her own. I guess for her it's considered in 'campaign contribution'.
Does that mean that if this is true -- that Hillary is a late bill paying candidate -- it hurts America's fiscal image by having President Clinton rack up in national debt?
sozzi,
Hillary's meeting had little to do with the aspect of free media as it had to do with funneling unsubstantiated smears concerning Obama to the folks that would make the best use of it.
After all Hillary & Mellon Scaife have done for each other over the years Hillary considers this a chip worth redeeming now.
Look for new unnamed sourced smears to be made public over the next week or two.
Mellon Scaife is all about making a profit by selling papers and Hillary has some stories to sell.
A marriage of convince continues....
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Show them the money Hillary. She has $38 million of campaign money in the bank of which she can spend $16 million right now. Just pay the darn bill!
Let us not forget...Bill Clinton gave Rendell's wife a federal judgeship.....he is is a creep belonging to the Clintons.
This is the very reason she's not quitting the race.  She owes so much and is out of primary money.  She'll have to either continue to raise money or pay it herself out of her own pocket.  The millions she has on hand is for the general election, and by law must be returned if she doesn't get the nomination. The only way she can pay off all that debt is to con more people into donating to her futile effort to get the nomination.
Where are Hillarys 2000 thru 2006 tax returns? There is a reason she has not released them. Please, voters have a right to see Hillarys financial history before the next round of Primarys.
If roles were reversed, no one would have to tell
Sen. Obama the truth.  He would see it.

He would be supporting Hillary, not trying to distroy her.
Check this website if you want more on Hillary's trail of non-payment of campaign bills owed to the little guy. Shame on you Hillary!

I commented on this above in another article, not realizing you had this one. I think this is her real achilles heel. I mean, delegate counts are, but she seems set to ignore that reality. The money situation may be what drives the date she actually gets out of the race.
Rendell is more focused on race than reality.

..."lily white...".

Don't you know a bigoted term when you blog it? 'Lily white' as opposed to what, 'unelectable'? (The definition of African American, according to the new Clinton/Rendell dictionary; first edition).

Have you not factored in the damage Nafta left in it's wake? Consider the current rate of unemployment, and jobs lost to Nafta. Bill Clinton helped do that. Do you refuse to ponder these facts?

Senator Clinton has mismanaged her campaign cash. She heartlessly, kicked vendors under the bus, who serviced her in good faith, by refusing to pay them. (These are liitle people who can ill afford to, unwillingly under-write her campaign expenses.

What, I ask you, what, has Senator Obama done, that is so unforgivable? Do you believe his heavenly ledger has, 'racist/un-American' written upon it, considering he taught Constitutional Law for 12 years?

Senator Obama's supporters find Senator Clinton's campaign disturbing.

'Unelectable'? My friends, let's bring home the realities. As American citizens we have one vote. One. It remains to be seen which of our Democratic candidates is 'unelectable'.

Pulling for Obama '08

If she can't run a fiscal campaign...how will she run our nations economy??  She has already written herself a 5 mil. loan, and she's out of money again?  Where will she get money in the White House...when she runs out of money???
The biggest issue?
What about the poor working people that have gotten STIFFED on these bills??
She is for the working class??
Do you think these samll businesses have families to feed? Have bills to pay themselves? But they are carrying "the clinton debt" on their books?
She is the experience candidate all right...
spend
spend
spend
and we will worry about the bills later!
Amazing!
Why is the media not all over the Clintons not paying their bills?  Why is this not front page news?  I would think they would be eating this up.
I also believe rendall and bill clinton are also playing the sexist card.  The thing that concerns me the most is that with all of these cards out there, she'll end up with more momentum in the end.  The storyline of the underdog being pushed out of the race, the storylines of the elite pushing me out and it's harder for woman, the "I'm fighting to the end - all help to create the momentum from here forward.

I
Absolutely, thanks for calling the Guv out on this one.  It is beyond obvious that were the tables turned, Obama would have been forced out WEEKS ago.  I heard someone say yesterday that it was SEXIST to say "honey, step down."  Bull.  They would be saying "sonny, step down" to Obama MUCH more loudly and he would have the class to actually do it, no doubt.  She is being given a lot of respect another, less established candidate would NOT be given.  To argue otherwise is an exercise in deception.  Rendell better watch the backlash on this one, there will be quite a lot of egg on the faces of our dear leaders if PA tips against this nonsense.  Let me rephrase that, WHEN PA tips against this nonsense.  We are not dumb enough to fall for this by a long shot.
HMS Billary is rusting out below the water line.  Who would want to buy a ticket on this ship?

I feel sorry for her small donors - who scrimp to put another $10 or $20 on the altar of Hillary's ego.  It looks, tho, that even these folks are going to have second thoughts about any further investment in a losing proposition.
