Obama vs. McCain: Clash over Iraq

Posted: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 9:08 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The L.A. Times notes how McCain and Obama clashed on Iraq yesterday. "Responding to Obama's frequent mocking of McCain's suggestion that U.S. troops might remain in Iraq for 100 years, the Republican nominee-in-waiting said the Illinois senator failed to understand that America has kept forces in Korea, Japan, Germany and Kuwait long after wars in each country ended. ‘In all due respect, it displays a fundamental misunderstanding of history, of how we've maintained national security, and what we need to do in the future to maintain our security in the face of the transcendent challenge of radical Islamic extremism,’ McCain told reporters on his campaign plane. ‘And I understand that, because he has no experience or background in any of it,’ McCain added.”

“Obama and other critics have dogged McCain over his remark in New Hampshire last year that the U.S. might keep troops in Iraq for as long as 100 years." More: "Campaigning Monday in Allentown, Obama questioned McCain's judgment -- and that of New York Sen. Clinton -- in voting to authorize the war in Iraq. ‘John McCain and Hillary Clinton, they had a chance to make a good decision on the most important foreign-policy issue of a generation, and they got it wrong,’ Obama told a crowd of 4,000 at Muhlenberg College.”

When asked yesterday about how he would respond to McCain’s “Service to America” tour, Obama replied, per NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan: "I think it would be foolish to critique John McCain for being an American patriot. The guy's a war hero. He was a POW for years, and endured horrendous treatment and torture. So I would never challenge John McCain's patriotism.” Obama added that he didn't expect McCain to play the patriotism card against his eventual Democratic opponent.

"To his credit, I haven't heard John McCain going around challenging other people's patriotism. I think John McCain, like many veterans, tend not to suggest that other people are unpatriotic," he said. Obama also said that he would challenge McCain on other grounds, including the Iraq war, his "absence" of a solution on the mortgage-lending crisis, and the Bush tax cuts. "But I would never challenge him on his patriotism, because I think that he has earned the honor and the respect of the American people on that front.”

What McCain fails to understand is that Americans don't want to be in Iraq for 100 years whether its a peaceful place or not.
You are a class act Obama. As a veteran myself, I too respect McCain's service, I just think his opportunity for prime time has passed. I can only imagine what HRC has to say about McCain, it will certainly be something snarky and stupid. Keep up the good and respectful fight sir, and you will win.
Just another typical lying Liberal
So lets get this straight... McCain wants to continue the war in Iraq until Americans aren't getting killed anymore, and then once we have acheived that goal, we will stay?

This is the stay the course policy of Bush + a new decades long commitment after we win.  Does John McCain expect Arab Muslims to change their over-1000 year history of rejecting occupying forces?

John McCain sees a 21st Century war through the eyes of a 20th century politician.  The biggest risk of fighting a war is that you fight today's war with yesterday's understanding of war.  It was a disaster when soldiers endlessly baonet charged no man's land to be slaughtered by new machine guns in WWI and it would be a disaster to continue to fight Al-Queda as thought they were a state with an army that can be defeated militarily.
While I do think that "100 years" quote has been taken waaayyyy out of context, I have to give it to Obama on this one. I don't care it is peaceful or not, we need out troops here defending OUR country, not there defending theirs.

They have an army, let them figure out to use it on their own, without us.

McCain repeated the Bush lunacy that if we pull out of Iraq we'll leave the country to al Qaeda. Even many of the Sunnis want to kill those guys. Does McCain have any idea what's really happening there?
Interesting... I respect McCain very well and he will always remail my hero, but I don't think we need US troops in IRAQ for 100 years whether for peace or war. This is a dumb war compared to the others and leaving troops there will not help. Obama, I think is right on this issue. We will have a strike force on ground within the region to guard our interest, but not get into local or civil iraqi issues. That is a foriegn policy that will definitely work. Remember Lebanon. We should learn from our mistakes, not repeat them.
Continue to talk down to us John...we really like it when you talk down to us on economics because we know you know so much about it.  But of course we enjoy you lecturing us on foreign policy too.  But just remember if you lecture us on FP, you better not make any misstatements cause we WILL call you on it.

I agree with Adam from Bklyn...we don't want to be places long, we'd like to move away from that.  We don't necessarily want to be the policemen of the world.  We want to build up our country to be strong economically in the world community and work with other nations to assure stability.  We don't need to do it all.

Yes, John McCain is a patriot but no, its not appropriate to rest on that.  We need a leader that has more strengths than that.

With respect for his service...
HOW IS THIS COUNTRY PAYING FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ? THE BULK OF THE WAR FUNDING IS FROM THE UNITED STATES BORROWING MONEY FROM CHINA ,JAPAN AND THE SAUDIAS.HOW LONG CAN THIS COUNTRY AFFORD TO KEEP THIS UP JOHN MCCAIN?
So Obama and Hillary have both said we could just send them back in if their wonderful plans fall apart.
Hi we're America here to stand with you, and this time you can trust us to see it through. Yeah right.
BTW we think the world would have been safer with Saddam in a nuke race with Iran.
Why doesn't the American people check out Obama's foreign policy advisors?  Maybe then you would understand his position on face to face meeting with terrorist.  Brzezinski ( Jimmy Carters National security advisor) Stated the entire Islam war with the Russians in 1979,  that's how Osama Bin Laden got there and , he voiced no regrets about it,"What more important Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet Union."  Robert Malley sympathetic to Hamas and Hezbollah.  He shares the same views that Rev. Wright does about Isreal-Palestine conflict.  Read for yourself, and you thought Rumsfeld and Chaney were bad.
I think that "100 Year" you-tube moment played over and over again a la "Reverand Wright" will lose McCain the election.  That is fine by me!
"...the transcendent challenge of radical Islamic extremism..."  I tell you what, I support John McCain, but he has to stop using this same, awful catch-phrase over and over and over.
While I think the "100 Years" in Iraq has totally been taken out of context, much like the Rev Wright controversy, I don't think the American people want to STAY in Iraq whether it's peacful or not. We want our young people home and we want our national Guard to be able to protect AMERICANS when situation like Katrina or 9/11 or other disasters occur....not in Iraq for "peace-keeping" purposes. Who really believe there will EVER be peace in Iraq anyhow? All they know how to do is fight. McCain won't get any momentum out of this argument.
So mccain thinks Obama lacks experience and background, yet he doesn't know the difference between shiite and sunni? If we need to stay in Iraq forever, why aren't we still in VietNam? Bush all over again-doesn't know much about anything and has nothing to offer except "stay the course". NO THANKS!!
Daddy Bushs' Gulf war was successful because it had an "EXIT strategy.  Unfortunately, Jr. only has an "Entrance strategy and John McSame is fully behind that plan.  What a fool you are John.  I was with you back in 2000 when you ran against the AWOL idiot from Texas, but now your blind support for his policies is sickening.
John Mcsame's call for endless war would have a better play if only those cheerleaders for his policies actually wanted to pay for or fight in his wars...but you want tax cuts and to hide your kiddies under the beds from the big bad muslim boogeymen...tough guys indeed
What McCain doesn't seem to understand that in the other cases we fought armies, in this case we are fighting insurgents, no organized army.  And on McCain and his service I think Obama should question McCains mental state in light of being tortured all those years.  Kind of like his saying Hillary can run for as long as she wants, he needs to weave a message the way he does.  I think questioning McCains mental fitness is legitimate considering what happened to him, just need to point it out the right way.
Mccain has experience, the problem is he evidently never learned anything from it. The fact that he graduated at the bottom of his class is showing.
"A fundamental misunderstanding of history"  Don't make me laugh.  Is this the guy that said repeatedly that the Iranians were arming Al-Queda? Nice try McCain
Actually Barack Obama and the rest of us understand the '100 years in Iraq' reckless comment of John Mc Cain quite well.  Iraq is not Korea nor part of the Axis Powers of WW2.  Iraq is a debacle that remains the hapless George W. Bushs failed war.  As the so called Bush 'surge' continues to fail...John Mc Cain's embrace of Bush and his quaqmire of a war.....will hardly be a winning strategy in November.  This I am very very thankful for.
McCain fails to acknowledge that we are able to maintain long term basing in the strategically useful locations of Korea, Japan, and Germany because the people in those places are friendly to us.  That is not true in Iraq and they will always see us as a foreign occupier.  Therefore we will never have the peace necessary to use such a base in a positive fashion.  Jp, Michigan, I think a thorough read of history will show that the Carter Administration was in favor of the Soviets being bogged down in Afghanistan, but it was the Reagan Administration that trained and equipped the "Muhajadeen", including Osama bin Laden.  That's under the theory that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.  In reality the enemy of my enemy can also be my enemy, and historically that has often been true.
When I hear "100 more years in Iraq" it immediately morphs into "100 more years of criminal war profiteering, decreasing civil liberty, and continued warrentless data mining."

It's not about Iraq, 9/11, or even oil.  Follow the money, and please follow it to The Hague.

I now see the wisdom of holding fire on impeachment.  It would not have been the correct remedy.  Impeachment is for political crimes.  The principles need to answer for themselves once they can no longer cling to office for protection.

The big mistake, of course, was pissing off the judiciary. Really dumb. They are waiting for W to leave so no pardons can be leveled.  The bloody Senate hasn't ajourned in nearly a year! The threat of a congressional subpeona used to spark fear akin to an IRS audit.  No longer.  The govt is seriously broken.

Until war crimes are brought, Amercia's healing cannot begin.

Pax,
M.
It is painfully apparent that the answer to the question of how many more American troops will have die in an Iraqi civil war, will be determined by which candidate wins the general election in November.
