Obama... like Heinz Kerry's husbands?

Posted: Wednesday, April 02, 2008 4:45 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Teresa Heinz Kerry joined Michelle Obama at a rally at Carnegie Mellon University today, saying she hoped the state would support Obama the way it had voted for both of her husbands.

“Pennsylvania voted for both of these good men,” she said, referring to the late John Heinz, a former Republican senator in the state, and Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 presidential candidate. “And this election, I hope Pennsylvania will join me in casting a ballot for another great and good man, Sen. Barack Obama.”

It was Heinz Kerry’s first event on Obama’s behalf; her husband endorsed him before the South Carolina primary. The rally was also Michelle Obama’s first campaign stop in Pennsylvania.

With Obama now leading in the national polls, Michelle Obama said she has seen how the bar for her husband has been consistently raised this year, and how he has met each of the challenges.

“The irony is that’s what’s going on for regular folks in this country,” she said. “The truth of the American experience today for many regular folks is that folks are trying to reach a bar that just keeps moving.”

But, Obama said she still believes her husband is the underdog in the race.

“We are gonna need Pennsylvania,” she said. “Because in this ever-shifting, moving bar, Barack Obama will always be the underdog. No matter how much money he raises, no matter how many wins he pulls together, no matter how many delegates he accumulates; he is still the underdog. It’s the way it works.”

Obama spoke to a group of about 600 people, a wide mix of students and community members. She was joined on the rope line after the event by Heinz Kerry, who earlier hosted her at a private luncheon.

The underdog position does change in the middle of the game. Someone please explain this to Hillary.
Now Remember, Sen. Kerry, you must follow the will of the people of your state and vote for Hillary, since she whooped Barry there in MA!  :)
“… And then along comes Barack Obama, with the kinds of gifts that appear in politics but once every few generations. There is a sense of dignity, even majesty, about him, and underneath that ease lies a resolute discipline. It’s not just that he is eloquent - that ability to speak both to you and to speak for you - it’s that he has a quality of thinking and intellectual and emotional honesty that is extraordinary.

Obama has emerged by displaying precisely the kind of character and judgment we need in a president: renouncing the politics of fear, speaking frankly on the most pressing issues facing the country and sticking to his principles. He recognizes that running for president is an opportunity inspire an entire nation.

On the matter of experience and capability, he has an impressive, nearly flawless campaign - one that whupped America’s most hard-boiled political infighters. Indeed, Obama was far more prepared to run a presidential campaign - from Day One - than Senator Clinton. And at no point did he go negative with personal attacks or character assassination; as much as they might been been justified, they didn’t even seem tempting to him.

We need to recover the spiritual and moral direction that should describe our country and ourselves. We see this in Obama, and we see the promise he represents to bring factions together, to achieve again the unity that drives great change and faces difficult and inconvenient, truths and peril. We need to send a message to ourselves and to the world that we truly do stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And in electing an African-American, we also profoundly renounce an ugliness and violence in our national character that have been further stroked by our president in these last eight years.

The similarities between John Kennedy and Barack Obama come to mind easily: the youth, the magnetism, the natural grace, the eloquence, the wit, the intelligence, the hope of a new generation.

But is might be more to the point to view Obama as Lincolnesque in his own origins, his sobriety and what history now demand. Like Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama challenges America to rise up, to do what so many of us long to do: to summon “the better angels of our nature”.

Let's just hope Obama isn't swiftboated as duplicitously as Kerry was...though I kinda think he wll be.
Outsiders looking in are usually the underdog, it's the nature of politics.  No big political machine to back them.  It's what makes their victory even sweeter.
Super delegates should use their own judgement and even vote for a candidate with fewer pledged delegates if they feel that the candidate in question is a really bad choice or completely contrary to the DNC idealogy. But that is not the case here, i.e. both Obama and Clinton are very capable candidates with very similar positions. So there is no reason for them to go against the popular choice.
“The truth of the American experience today for many regular folks is that folks are trying to reach a bar that just keeps moving.”

I can SO relate to that!!!  I'm working 70-80 hours a week and I'm no better off financially than I was a year ago.  I know a lot of people are having to work a lot harder, and a lot longer, just to keep their heads above water.  Yesterday, I spent 70.00 at the gas pump, then 100.00 at the grocery store. Now I get to cut out a check to pay my property taxes on a house that is not worth what it was last year... market values are going down as more foreclosures pop up, but my property taxes have not gone down because everything covered by those taxes has gone up.

Michelle is right on the mark!!

oh wait.... I think this is where I'm supposed to chime in with some totally off-topic remark about one of the candidates.  Well... I'm too exhausted to think of anything nasty to say, and besides, my lunch break is over.

Hey guys looks like Obama has gotten another Montana superdelegate today.  Former U.S. Sen. John Melcher says he is going to cast his key Democratic Party superdelegate vote for Barack Obama.

Keep closing that gap in PA ladies! Wouldn't it be sweet to see a real upset there? Go Obama, '08!
This is turning out to be a most interesting race.
The state machine, such as it is under Rendell is supporting Hillary while the old line established families like the Casey's and Heinz's are supporting the insurgent, Obama.

Hey First Read,
When has this happened in Penna. before?
Ahhh! She has got to be the ultimate kiss of death!
What Michelle said is so true.  According to msm reports, there are more people signing up for welfare since the 60's.  A change has got to be made.

OBAMA, 2008!
Be careful Michele. By telling the American people the truth that the economic bar keeps getting raised higher (the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer with the middle class diasppearing downward), those on the far right might  accuse you of being unpatriotic).

I appreciate Teresa Heinz Kerry stomping for Obama but the timing may have been a little off. When Michele Obama is talking about the failed economic policies of the Republicans and how the economic bar keeps getting raised higher for us average folks, I'm not so sure it was the smartest thing to have Teresa Heinz Kerry standing next to you at that particular moment. Unless that is ketchup is also taking a hit by the down turn in our economic standing.
Gov. Ed Rendell,

"....whites won't vote for a black...."

Where are you,  Nazi Germany? Your sick, bigoted comment is killing Clinton in the polls.

Grounded in wishful thinking, your words come from the darkest regions of stupidity.

Every human being has character flaws. Who can claim, not so much as a speck of evil resides within their heart?

The obese bristle, when they are called fat. A liar hates to be called one.

Have I lost you Ed?

The point is, good people don't embrace their defects, they struggle hard against them. We here in Pa., had faith Senator Obama's campaign would be successful with a great many of our nieghbors, both near, and far. Ed, you overplayed your filthy hand. What did you think you would do when your days in government are over? Better hone that exit strategy. You are political poison.

Proud to be a Pennsylvanian who is;

Pulling for Obama '08

Now I get to switch to Hunts again
My girlfriend and I took some time out to see this speech.  Michelle Obama did a great job keeping the crowd into what she had to say.  She's very charismatic and interesting, and even got a few good laughs out of the crowd.

It was nice to finally hear her story.

Central PA needs to see a lot of this woman if Barack wants a chance at winning the primary here.  The more their message gets out, the closer they pull to Hillary in the polls

Could I have some ketchup with those outsourced jobs, Ms. Billionaire?
I see that Dem voter registration is reaching a remarkable new high in Oregon as it has in PA and as it did in previous States as well as in those upcoming primary States. For one county in Oregon where Republican registrations normally exceeded democrtic registrations there is now a 4,000+ reversal of more demmocrtic registrations. There is one and only one reason for this. Obama. He has incited people like no other. It is truly amazing.

Now if people will maintain this exciterment and desire to particpate and will help Obama when necessary to make sure Congress enacts some decent legislation after he is elected we will be just fine.

Remember, Obama has stated he cannot do all this on his own. He can incite and provide a pathway but we have to take the right direction as a Nation and provide the energy. He is smart enough and not so egocentric like Hillary to know this is fact. He knows he will need the people to support and help him move this country forward on many important issues. Let's be sure after he is elected that we give him that support and energy when he calls on us.
RE the avalanche of DEMS voting

To the poster who said there is one and only one reason for this BO

I say - part right

There is one and only one reason for this -
a hotly contested race - to see who knocks out BUSH

BUSH is the one name that makes the DEMS come out and makes past REPS vote and sign up as DEMS this time around

BUSH
I hope that at the end of the Primaries that the DNC insists that the bar stop moving up and superdelegates get behind Obama and end this thing before the convention. However, saying that the bar could stop raising if the good people in Pennsylvania vote for Obama and force Hillary to quit. We would then have a much better chance of beating McCain in November.
Billy

I assume you meant to say the underdog does NOT switch in the middle

But that is wrong --- many many viewers and fans - will start rooting for a TEAM that is losing and when there appears to be no hope.  This is regardless of who was the underdog to begin

I can turn in a college game of two teams I like but do not favor massively over the other (other then I want to watch football)

I very very often start rooting for the loser - its the charm of the underdog AT THE TIME
I like what was said, but...

..why haven't you mentioned the 3 (THREE) endorsements Obama has received today?

He received Hamilton of the 9/11 commission, the Wyo Governor (sorry - forgot name) and John Melcher, former senator from Montana.  The good Gov from Wyo and Melcher are both superdelegates.

THIS IS NEWS, but I don't see it...
"Hey guys looks like Obama has gotten another Montana superdelegate today.  Former U.S. Sen. John Melcher says he is going to cast his key Democratic Party superdelegate vote for Barack Obama."

Drip, drip, drip ... Chinese water torture.
There are some awesome folks posting on this thread.  It's hard to imagine being even more inspired by Obama's candidacy ... but reading some of your eloquence on his behalf continues to lift me up.  It is incredible that we have reached this place in history where the possibility exists to finally begin to set things right. All I can say is, "Believe It!!"

and Vote ... Obama '08
Kerry, Kennedy, Richardson, Dodd, Leahy - all FAILURES!  Of course they will call for Hillary to get out of the race.  They all gave up and rolled over when the going got tough.  The Clintons won't because they are WINNERS!  Now all we need to do is wait for Dukakis and Mondale to chide in.
NObama, never. i hope people will wake up. i voted for NOPE in Wisconsin. before i realized what is the 'Wright' thing to do.

please anybody but Nobama.
I use to like Teresa Heinz Kerry but not anymore!!! Michelle Obama's a mean hateful person, I can't believe THK would stoop so low...I guess all the money in the world can't buy you CLASS!!!
I feel like vomiting whenever I hear Obama's mention the word "underdog". Michelle's mentioning it multiple times with emphasis on each really made me throw up big! That is calculated politically, just stop saying that please! It turns me off big!

I love Michelle Obama.  She has a way of looking at things that put them in perspective.  That bar does keep moving for us all.  We're getting hit at the grocery store, the gas station, the utility companies, property taxes, insurance, etc.  This country will have a fine first family representing us when the Obamas are in the White House.
If the worst thing you have against a person is his preacher, then something is wrong with you. Many people have family members and friends who are in jail for killing and other crimes. If anyone judges them for that relationship, that would be very pathetic. And the rhetoric choosing friends and not family is nonsense. I bet these so call one-time Obama supporters are listening to the radio and FoxNews jockeys. One question: have you or any of these jockeys actually taken the time to listen to all of Wright’s sermons? I know the answer is, “No.” Yet, you judge without reviewing the evidence. I’m glad that you folks aren’t in charge of any courts in this country. You will have half the population locked up before they even get a chance to be heard in court.
with all the talk about the Dem voter registration sky rocketing and everyone assuming it is because Obama has "inspired the nation" has anyone thought about the possibility that a lot of Dems are registering so they can be sure Obama does NOT make it to the white house, so they can cast a vote against him and for Hillary?
Ed Rendell should tell the truth.
His wife, Midge Rendell, was appointed to a Federal appellate judgeship by Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton made him head of the DNC in 2000, when the Dems lost the White House to George Bush.
Are the PA people going to back Rendell's choice when it is clear that he owes the Clintons tremendously?
What else did the Clinton's promise you, Ed?
Supreme Court for your wife, and the VP slot for you?
Ed, you seem to be looking out for your own interests, not Pennsylvanians.
Seems Super Ed votes for his best interests, not the state's or the country's.
I watched Chris "interview" Obama ..it is beyond belief, it's a staged pep rally with cheerleaders with chants for Obama,

MSNBC has now lost any credibility as journalists, if you have any pride left in your profession, you should be outraged... unlike Obama and his radical church, you should leave MSNBC in protest.

Congratulations to the "press"  ..you have chosen the demo candidate.

We should save the money on sham elections and just let the media caucus for who our president will be.

This is the Michelle Obama who was upset about how expensive piano lessons are, right?  The one only now proud of America?  Just trying to make sure we have a context for today.   Oh, and aren't the Heinz/Kerrys the very sort of "typical white" people that Reverend Wright and his replacement rant about?  You know?
Michelle and Osama will not be going to the GE as Hillary will have her way in PA.
Go McCain!!!
Charismatic or silver tongue devil? Hard to tell the difference? Personally, there are other, more important things, I value in a leader. This, as other years, the saying 'liar, liar, pants on fire' keeps coming to mind.
Kerry, Kennedy, Richardson, Dodd, Leahy - all FAILURES!  Of course they will call for Hillary to get out of the race.  They all gave up and rolled over when the going got tough.  The Clintons won't because they are WINNERS!  Now all we need to do is wait for Dukakis and Mondale to chide in

Mondale already "chide in" he is behind Hillary
Michelle is back with more Freudian slips of the tongue from the sermons of Rev Wright. But will she attack the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for dropping a fear bomb for calling him Barack Hussein Obama at the inauguration? Time will tell.
I use to like Teresa Heinz Kerry but not anymore!!! Michelle Obama's a mean hateful person, I can't believe THK would stoop so low...I guess all the money in the world can't buy you CLASS!!!

AMEN TO THAT!!!!
Compare the looks of Laura Bush and Theresa Kerry.  I'm glad we didn't have to look at the catsup lady for 8 years!  What a beast!
The majority ("silent") American voters will decide 2008 election.

Bill Clinton did it.

Obama will not make it.
Hey Brian In philly, kudo's to you, Ed Rendell is an absolute embarrassment to pa, I have a personal letter from him telling me his racist comments were not meant for the public venue, plus he made worse person in the world with keith o.  Rendell does owe the clintons and he owes them big, sad thing is he only makes himself look dumber every day!!!!!!  Pa for Obama
The reason there isn't too much mention of Obama's latest three endorsements is because Buzzflash prints so many hate articles about Hillary, there isn't room...
Mrs. Kerry is an embarrassment to Pittsburgh.  She's crude, rude, and drinks way too much.  I've seen her in action since the 90's at public events.  Michelle Obama should NOT have aligned herself with a women of no class and weak character.
Michelle Obama + Teresa Heinz Kerry = a very scary, toxic combination.
Obama, Hillary or John McQ...don't care about them or their spouses...how did we get to this point of having a choice between three dems...not fair.
Why do I keep seeing the super rich campaigning about change and then we don't see any, except that they keep on getting richer?

I don't think Rev. Wright is gonna be happy about this!
"he is still the underdog. It’s the way it works.”
I hear the racial undertone in this statement. Obamma is a racist, and his wife is even worse.
Barack is a soon-to-be-discovered angry black man hiding behind a thin veil.  Do you really think the Republicans won't unload the wagon on him when he's officially the Democratic choice?  Will the real Obama please stand up...?
