Down the ballot: A Jersey challenge

Rep. Rob Andrews will challenge the 84-year-old incumbent Sen. Frank Lautenberg in the Dem primary, the New York Times writes. “Opposition to Mr. Lautenberg stems not from any ideological differences but rather his advanced age. In a statement, Mr. Andrews said: ‘2008 is a year of great change in American politics. Millions of new voters have chosen to enter the political process as a means to make our country better. As New Jersey elects a United States senator this year, people from all over the state have expressed the desire to have real choices based on a positive, substantive campaign.’”

“The primary winner is expected to be heavily favored in the November election against whoever emerges among the three little-known Republicans competing for their party’s nomination: State Senator Joseph Pennacchio, a dentist from Morris County; Murray Sabrin, a finance professor at Ramapo College; and Andrew Unanue, a political novice and Manhattan resident whose family owns the Goya food company. Still, New Jersey’s Democrats must now cope with a bruising primary fight between two well-financed and well-known contenders.”

Carter hints at Obama backing

The Nigerian paper This Day reports that the former president all but came out for Obama, speaking to reporters in that country:

We are very interested in the primaries. Don’t forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town which is home to 625 people is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro- Obama. My grandchildren are also pro- Obama. As a Super Delegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for but I leave you to make that guess.

He was in Abuja, the paper reports, for the Carter Center awards for guinea worm eradication.
I think that primary fight will be good for New Jersey Dems.  I have no quarrel with Sen. Lautenberg (his office was always very supportive when I worked in planning at an inner-city hospital in NJ) but I never like the idea of pre-ordained elective office.  People SHOULD have to prove their still ready and committed and relevant to be Senator or Rep. or whatever.

I just hope it will be a constructive fight...

When you are running for this high office for re election at 84 it show only your own selfishness and greed for power. While repsect for the elderly is all well in good it is far past time for some sharp young minds in Washington who will happen to be around long enough to have to pay off the national debt.
Carter has been sending signals for awhile that he is for Obama yet I respect his wanting to maintain "neutrality" because he is such a party elder.

That's fine, we know who he's really for!  And say what you want about Carter, he's about the most ethical politican out there.
There have been questions about Lautenberg and his ability to continue to function in the best interests of the state of New Jersey.  Lautenberg has done well in the Senate for New Jersey, but I believe the time is now to change the guard as it were.  Andrews is a great choice.  He has done well in the House and I wish him well in the Senate when he gets there in 2009.
Personally as a Democrat for life I was very disapointed in Carter as a President..I can only pray he has grown in Political Wisdom since his Presidency and can see that Obama is the wrong choice.Perhaps someday when he has gained more experience and has proven to the American Public that his views do NOT in fact have any carryover from his pastor, Rev. Wright or his underground friends, could he be trusted to run again..HC should be Carter's only choice in 2008.  GOD BLESS AMERICA..
