Clinton: 'Obama can't win'

Posted: Thursday, April 03, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray

“Obama can’t win.” That’s the cover of the New York Post, as said by… Hillary Clinton to Bill Richardson. “While lobbying for his endorsement, Hillary Rodham Clinton flatly told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Barack Obama could not win the presidency if he got the Democratic nomination. ‘He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win,’ she said, according to a report by ABC News.”  and

There is definitely two versions of what the Clintons remember vs. what Bill Richardson remembers when it comes to his decision to endorse Obama. Bill Clinton believes Richardson promised he would not endorse. Pahl Shipley, a spokesman for Richardson, said his boss never promised to endorse Hillary Clinton. ‘He never told the president or anybody else, for that matter,’ Shipley said. ‘The governor respectfully disagrees with the president.’”

The Washington Post: “In hushed tones, sometimes with palpable sadness in her voice, Clinton tells dark, difficult anecdotes picked up on the campaign trail. They often relate to health matters, culled from her conversations with voters, and are designed to illustrate a policy point. Presidential candidates across the decades, from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton to George W. Bush, have honed the art of picking out stories to bolster a policy position in particularly human terms. Former senator John Edwards (N.C.), who left the Democratic race this year, often cited the stories of people he defended as a trial lawyer. For all of his grandeur, Obama can turn serious as well; at least once, in an effort to demonstrate how fleeting life can be, he detoured from his speech to tell the story of a woman he had recently met who, moments later, found out that her child had been killed in a car accident.”

For Clinton, the approach seems to bring together her best skills, especially her ability to listen to voters she meets. In speeches that sometimes wear on and sometimes derail into deadening policy, sharing bleak stories can focus the audience's attention.”

Clinton's unveiling of a new 3:00 am TV ad on the economy and hitting McCain sparked a back-and-forth with the Republican, just what Clinton's camp wanted. McCain's response was online. "Within hours, the McCain campaign released an advertisement on the Internet. It starts with images of the Clinton advertisement, with the narrator then commenting, ‘Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama just said they’d solve the problem by raising your taxes — more money out of your pockets.’”

“The advertisements highlighted how the two parties’ candidates have developed starkly different approaches to the housing meltdown, with Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton calling for billions of dollars in aid for distressed homeowners and Mr. McCain warning against costly federal intervention. Mr. McCain’s rapid response recalled a similar advertisement by the Obama campaign in response to Mrs. Clinton’s original red-phone advertisement, which questioned Mr. Obama’s readiness to be president."

The Los Angeles Times does a fact-check of sorts on Clinton's Iraq policy promises. "Clinton has touted her role in the congressional effort to force President Bush to bring the troops home. ‘I've been working day in and day out in the Senate to provide leadership to end this war,’ Clinton recently told an audience at George Washington University, contrasting her experience with that of rival Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.’ … But since Democrats took control of Congress, Clinton has done relatively little to advance legislation to force the Bush administration to withdraw from Iraq, according to congressional records and lawmakers and staff members who have worked on the issue.”

”Instead, Clinton largely remained on the sidelines of the congressional debate, her legislation ignored as the Senate focused on measures developed by lawmakers who were more central to the legislative drive to end the war.”

USA Today’s editorial page does something it rarely does: It hits a candidate pretty hard. Today, it calls on Bill Clinton to release the names of donors to his foundations. "[G]iven Clinton's unusual circumstances, gifts to his foundation could rightly be seen as a back door into the good graces of someone who could be a key adviser to the next president. The stakes are simply too high not to have principles of open government take precedence over common fundraising practices."

Per NBC’s John Boxley, Clinton will be on the “Ellen” for a taping today; the show will air Monday. This taping will take place following her appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Keep discounting and marginalizing him Hillary, cause that's been such a successful strategy for you in the past.  Way to wage a good campaign fight...start on a false premise ::eyeroll::

Woman for Obama 08
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Two reasons why Obama can and will win unless HRC and the fat-bottom gang somehow throw the election.
1. Obama has put some sharp people in charge look it up you'll see what I mean.
2. Obama has worked his tail off. He was the only candidate that I remember who actually went door to door in Iowa and asked for votes. His people were everywhere helping out. This sort of thing will not be forgotten.
3. I'm a Huckabee  fan and even I can respect this!
How does she know he cannot win when she is the queen of lies, the most deceptive politician, the most scandalous, and the most desperate politician? Yesterday she attacked McCain with the 3 a.m. ad and now we are hearing her anti-Obama ranting out of desperation. Her chances are much weaker than Obama or even McCain.
Please be a real politician, Hillry. Stop shifting your views, stop lying your way to victory, and stop trying to play cards to score politically.
Yes, absolutely, the Clintons need to share their financial info immediately, actually like yesterday.

They are getting a free ride on this from the press. Kudos to USAtoday, of all people.
Interesting you would discuss Clinton's efforts to bring troops home but you didn't discuss Barry's efforts.  Oh, he would have had to be there to work on it. Frankly, the US Senate was just a place for him to hang out since he started running for President on Day One after his Senate arrival.  I guess when he gets in the White House he'll be busy running for Chancellor of the world or something new he'll make up.
Yeah, USA Today!  However, I would like to know WHY she told Richardson that Obama could not win.  Surely she had an arguement against him...?  What's the rest of the story?
It is beyond credulity that either Clinton would be making an issue out of Gov. Richardson endorsing Senator Obama.  Both have said with great seriousness that the Superdelegates should be free to make up their own mind, and apparently their decision should be based on the reason du jour that Clinton gives for her eventual victory.  Seems like she has tried on several, reminding me of Bush's continual revamping for why we should be in Iraq.  Do we really need more of this?
I MISSED THE PART WHERE HILLARY MADE HER CASE ON HOW SHE CAN WIN WITHOUT THE BLACKS,THE ELITES,THE ACTIVIST,THE CAUCUS STATES AND THE RED STATE DEMOCRATICS!
This is getting better than the greatest episodes of The Young and the Restless and All my children in their entire history. So Sen. Clinton, he cant win, huh? Why? Because you said so? Shame, shame, shame. Do us all a favor, start worrying about your senate seat in NY. You no longer have a shot at being president, soon, you're gonna give up that seat too.
Where are her tax returns!
Sort of a Fact Check:
HRC cannot tell the truth, and I don`t understand why.

I've been working day in and day out in the Senate to provide leadership to end this war,’ Clinton recently told an audience at George Washington University, but since Democrats took control of Congress, Clinton has done relatively little to advance legislation to force the Bush administration to withdraw from Iraq, according to congressional records and lawmakers and staff members who have worked on the issue.
Instead, Clinton largely remained on the sidelines of the congressional debate, her legislation ignored as the Senate focused on measures developed by lawmakers who were more central to the legislative drive to end the war.”

HRC just cannot tell the truth, got fired for lying.
Who would have thunk it... LOL!!!
Ireland = peace talks...... LOL!!
Bosnia = sniper fire....... LOL!!
Chelsea = Where?.......... LOL!!
NAFTA = I was against it............LOL!!
Open borders in Macedonia........... LOL!!
Oh, and this one comes to mind.
My husband didn`t sleep with that woman, or that woman and that woman either. Yeah right they deserve each other.

Go Obama '08
Senator Clinton appears more and more like a petulant child...if she can't win at the board game she's playing she'll toss the board and all the game pieces into the air and walk away satisfied that she ruined the game for her opponent.

"He cannot win."

Yes, Senator Clinton, you seem intent on sabotaging his campaign so you can come back in 2012 as "our savior".
Well if Obama can't win, and Hillary can't beat him, then I'd rather go down with a candidate I respect and trust than a candidate who will say or do ANYTHING to get elected. But that's just me.

Obama '08
I see the Obama bias 'moderators' are out in full force today and working hard to suppress the voice of the voters...

How convenient!
The 3am ad is NOT the smartest move, the stock exchange is CLOSED at 3am
Try again Hillary
I'm just glad we have Obama as a choice ;) I see him taking it all the way!
I don't understand why it is a surprise to anyone that the Clintons say Obama can't win.  What else would people expect them to do?
How the Clinton's tactics are not turning off her core support(women0 is a wonder to me.
If it was Obama saying all those things about Clinton .. there would be a massive backlash ... including from African Americans.
UNBELIEVABLE !

The question is who can survive the republican attacks relatively unscathed- Certainly Clinton has issues but consider what the republicans and the 527s can do with the Rev. Wright controversy not to mention Obama's false recollection about the Kenyan airlift and his own "conception" supposedly at Selma...years after he was really born...and don't forget the clip of Michelle Obama talking about her view of this country then add in all the rumors about his patriotism and you've got a recipe that makes the right wing start to drool....
People please do not be upset with Hillary & Bill they are just using their (Do anything , Say anything)method that Hillary wrote about in Her Thesis in college. The Alinsky Methods to Politics. The problem with those methods that people are tired of them, just as we that had RESPECT for the Clintons are trully losing it day by day.I am simple amazed at the tactics that they have stuped to.Now they are pointing to Fox news of all places, saying how fare they are over there.I am waiting for HillBilly to change their party membership.I think those karl Rove tendancies are there for a reason.
The Clintons are dishonest, corruption and do any thing to win. Liars, liars, liars. It's time to retire the Bush/Clinton dynasty.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8_odhuWfTk

Senator Clinton is NOT trying to sabotage Obama's Campaign.  She is mearly trying to make democrats  realize that she holds the torch and she can lead the way with experience and guts to say what needs to happen.
Those super-delegates left to make their choice known are mostly elected officials.  What I'd take into consideration is which of the candidates would best help me get re-elected.  When Bill Clinton took office he had a democratic majority yet lost it right away.  That seems to be a pattern with them.  YOU help ME but other than that, you're on your own.  If the super-delegates go against the will of the people, how many do you think will survive in their chosen public service careers?  And YES, OBAMA CAN WIN!
Bill Clinton gets a room full of Super Delegates together in San Fran, to rant and rave about Bill Richardson's endorsement of Obama...

Read that as 'You endorse him, and you're also on my 'list'...  (Sounds like a Nixon hate list....)

I wish someone would have started a movement in that room, walked out to the cameras and endorsed Obama in mass, in protest to his tactics...  It's coming...

The party's over, shut out the lights...
USA Today is right on the money (literally and figuritively).  I must read that editorial.  It certainly seems to ring true based if FR's excerpt is an accurate rendering.

The Clintons need to become less secretive.  Just what are they hiding?

Obama 08
What is hilarious about this poor attempt by HRC is she says Obama can't win, yet she can't beat Obama.  So how does she win?  Really is pathetic.
It's great that we are all so passionate about our choices...but the good news is that we have TWO great choices.  I am an Obama supporter because I like his ideas and his ability to inspire and his being unafraid to ask all of America to work WITH him in creating change.  However, if Hillary finds a way to fairly receive the nomination, I WILL vote for her!  She CAN be a good president and will certainly be a vast improvement over the current administration that has stolen the rights and heart of this great country from us.  Everyone should vote with their hearts and best intentions...let the process decide who are candidate will be and then ALL of us rally around the democratic candidate and insure that we will have a caring, compassionate and ethical government that can restore decency and ethics and pride to this great country!

PEACE NOW...enough is enough!
Let's not forget who's speaking here; the early presumptive nominee, former First Lady of a popular president...AND SHE CAN'T GET A LOCK ON DELEGATES AGAINST A MAN NO ONE HAD HEARD OF A YEAR AGO!! How "winnable" does that make HER?!?
How has underestimating Obama worked SO FAR for you Hillary? You discounted him from the start because you thought the nation would crown you without question. Well, the nation felt differently and have embraced Obama for everything you are NOT. Integrity, honesty, inspiring come to min immediately. We would rather give our support to the "Junior" Senator from Illinois, a virtual unknown, than to have you bring your secrecy, scandals and lies back to the White House. I admire Obama more and more everyday because he's been able to withstand your wrath with dignity and grace.....qualities, by the way, I'd like to see in my President. That would be Barack Obama!
HRC needs to watch out for the act of despiration which is consuming the good foundation she initial laid for her campaign. There is always another time.

Pls.tell her to play clean. Dayo Davies for: INDEPENDENT WATCH in Nigeria.
OBAMA LIES IN PENNSYLVANIA AD
From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
GREENBURG, Pa. -- The Clinton campaign today accused the Obama campaign of "false advertising," claiming that a recent ad Obama released in Pennsylvania was disngenous because Obama has been the recipient of more than $200,000 from the oil and gas industry.
In the ad, Obama says, "I'm Barack Obama, and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists, and I won't let them block change any more."
Obama has taken $213,884 from the oil and gas industry as of Feb. 29th, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Sen. Hillary Clinton has taken $306,813 in that same period.
Two of Obama's campaign bundlers are also CEOs for oil and gas companies, per a list released on his campaign Web site.
Robert Cavnar, listed as a bundler who has raised between $50,000 to $100,000 for the campaign, is the chairman and CEO of Mission Resources Corp., a Houston-based firm. George Kaiser, also listed in the same $50,000 to $100,000 category, is the CEO of Tulsa-based Kaiser-Francis Oil Company.
"It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said. "Senator Obama says he doesn't take campaign contributions from oil companies but the reality is that Exxon, Shell, and others are among his donors."

I love how everyone jumps all over Hillary for saying this, taking Richardson at his word, but just blindly agrees that Richardson most certainly didn't tell Bill he would back Hillary.

Hate to tell you folks, but they're ALL politicians, and you're just selectively searching for reasons to hate one more than the other.
Hillary misspeaks about what she did in the Senate re Iraq......What a shocker
The last few days, we had "nice Hillary" and tonight we will have "funny Hillary"
In ancient myths and fairy tales, monsters had the ability to change their appearance at will. That is why monsters are frightening. When Hillary was telling her tale about Bosnia ,she was very believable. That is why Hillary is so frightening.
Using simple logic: 1) if we know that Clintons cannot tell the truth, and 2) we know that Hillary Clinton says Obama can't win, we can deduct 3) that Hillary Clinton really believes Obama can win.
"He cannot win.  He cannot win."

Let's take a Cintonesque turn to these sentences.

He can't win, as in "not enough people will vote for him"

He can't win, as in "He can't win, d@#m it.  I just won't let him win."

Kind of like the meaning of "is."
Both Hillary and Obama are rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!
All politicians are crooks and criminals
HRC = Desperate people.  It's really sad, but not surprising, to see her, Bill and her crew stoop that low.  I have lost a lot of respect for Bill these last few months on the camp trail.

This thing with Bill Richardson is nonsense and they are again reaching for something that just does not matter.  Does she think her statements against Richardson really matters to anyone that is informed?  That's crap!  Richardson knows how to hitch his wagon to the correct horse.  She needs to be very careful, just in case she happens to win (read, steal) the nomination.  She has pissed off a lot of voters!

Obama O-Eight
Since the New York Post is a right-wing Murdoch rag, anything printed in its pages is done for the purpose of supporting the Republican party.  The Repubs want to run against Hillary because they can energize their base against her.
Hillary cannot win the election because she has to much dirt in her background including an ongoing Federal Case in which she is accused of accepting 1.2 million dollars in illigal campaign funds. She is afraid to release her taxes and is a proven liar. What Senator Obama's Pastor 'said' will be minor fallout as opposed to Hillary's 'personal' scandals. The Karl Rove Republican gang will tear her to pieces, they want Hillary to win the Democratic nomination.
Hillary, another lie, NO. Know she's claiming to be fighting to put a quick end to the Iraq misstake, another lie.

Bill Clinton, also, please release your tax returns w/Hillary's. thank you.
Hillary, another lie, NO. Know she's claiming to be fighting to put a quick end to the Iraq misstake, another lie.

Bill Clinton, also, please release your tax returns w/Hillary's. thank you.
I am honored, deeply honored to be on stage with Senator Obama... honored... ooops, but he can't win at the presidency or bowling! Her credibility, honesty ratings and Bill's popularity is just slipping away. By making such blatantly partisan statements, she risks increasing incredulity from the voters on many of her actual campaign points. It just isn’t smart or effective politics and I wonder who is giving this council in her campaign?

Taxes are promised a few days before the Penn primary, but don’t think that Bill is going to come forward with the donor information any time soon. It will simply provide too much fodder for editorials and attack… even the stuff that is already known and has been written about will resurface and be rehashed.  The question will be: do we want a First Man, who will undoubtedly serve as an extra-vice-president and who is beholden to many ‘unusual’ special interest (many of them foreign) in the white house?
Yes he can!! Where are the facts that back up her statement? Simple opinion is not good enough to convince me...
How sad that any woman would vote for Hill just because of being the same sex! If Hill were elected those women voters would be screaming about the government. Never vote for sex or race -
Vote for HONESTY and Hill is not HONEST!

Go to Utube and see "The Hillary Movie" she has never been honest!
OBAMA CAN AND WILL WIN. We are supposed to listen to the hell hath no fury like a woman scorned candidate. She ran out of dough after raising huge amounts when she was the presumptive winner. Her campaign marginalized a plethora of states because she could not be bothered with the states that don't matter in her mind. She lost TEXAS and of course that state is now inconsequential. In her reality distortion kaleidoscope she sees only herself in the White House.  Bill Richardson got it right and backed the winner as did Chris Dodd, Lee Hamilton, Ted Kennedy and a list of folks to long to list here. I guess these supers moving quickly on the OBAMA bandwagon are not using the kaleidoscope or smoking the Hilary dope.As an IRAQ war vet I want the person with judgment in the White House so we canhightail it out of here reasonably and go fight Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. She had this one wrong and thought voting for it would make her look tough. No mam it just made you look wrong and unwilling to admit any mistakes.

BARACK AND ROLL in 2008 BACK THE WINNER PENNSYLVANIA, NORTH CAROLINA, INDIANA. THE 82nd AIRBORNE WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.

AIRBORNE FOR OBAMA
Hillary will do anything to get the nomination, enough of 12 Years of Bush's and 8 Years of Clinton's.
I see the Obama bias 'moderators' are out in full force today and working hard to suppress the voice of the voters...

How convenient!

Woman for Clinton 08 (Sent Thursday, April 03, 2008 9:45 AM)

Suppress the voice of the voters? With all respect, go ahead and vote for whoever you like, but that does not prevent me from voicing my disagreement with a deceptive and self-damaging (to the party) campaigne. Hillary would be a dream nominee for republicans. No matter how much the Right wingers try to dis-qualify Obama, they fail because of Obama's originality. There is absolutely nothing original about Hillary, nothing! It amazes me that she has so many fans, are they that easy to brainwash? Come on folks, use your intelligence!
Yes, WHERE THE HECK ARE HER TAX RETURNS!??

Pls someone, some newspaper, anybody, me and my family really want this story for a long time! it takes a scanner and internet to release them I can loan her mine if she is so bleak on funds, but for the life of me I cannot understand what has been months now that she promises to release her tax returns and still has not. I want them before ANY OF THE REMAINING PRIMARIES!! THIS is a serious gap which ppl should know before they vote, because that can considerably change thier opinion of her (could be good or bad). but we deserve to know before asking for our votes!
Unfortunately, Obama may indeed not be elected President.

Sen. Obama has a tremendous amount of dirty laundry that has not be "aired" by the press as of yet.

The Media has held a lot back ... But, that won't be the case during the general election.

The very reason the Obama Campaign has been calling for Hillary to quit is because when the GOP starts "really attacking" Obama ... He will need "time" to try and explain the charges "away" or at the least people tend to have short memories.

My bet is that "OBAMA CAN'T WIN" ... I'm sorry to say.
