Clinton: 'Obama can't win'

Posted: Thursday, April 03, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray

“Obama can’t win.” That’s the cover of the New York Post, as said by… Hillary Clinton to Bill Richardson. “While lobbying for his endorsement, Hillary Rodham Clinton flatly told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Barack Obama could not win the presidency if he got the Democratic nomination. ‘He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win,’ she said, according to a report by ABC News.”  and

There is definitely two versions of what the Clintons remember vs. what Bill Richardson remembers when it comes to his decision to endorse Obama. Bill Clinton believes Richardson promised he would not endorse. Pahl Shipley, a spokesman for Richardson, said his boss never promised to endorse Hillary Clinton. ‘He never told the president or anybody else, for that matter,’ Shipley said. ‘The governor respectfully disagrees with the president.’”

The Washington Post: “In hushed tones, sometimes with palpable sadness in her voice, Clinton tells dark, difficult anecdotes picked up on the campaign trail. They often relate to health matters, culled from her conversations with voters, and are designed to illustrate a policy point. Presidential candidates across the decades, from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton to George W. Bush, have honed the art of picking out stories to bolster a policy position in particularly human terms. Former senator John Edwards (N.C.), who left the Democratic race this year, often cited the stories of people he defended as a trial lawyer. For all of his grandeur, Obama can turn serious as well; at least once, in an effort to demonstrate how fleeting life can be, he detoured from his speech to tell the story of a woman he had recently met who, moments later, found out that her child had been killed in a car accident.”

For Clinton, the approach seems to bring together her best skills, especially her ability to listen to voters she meets. In speeches that sometimes wear on and sometimes derail into deadening policy, sharing bleak stories can focus the audience's attention.”

Clinton's unveiling of a new 3:00 am TV ad on the economy and hitting McCain sparked a back-and-forth with the Republican, just what Clinton's camp wanted. McCain's response was online. "Within hours, the McCain campaign released an advertisement on the Internet. It starts with images of the Clinton advertisement, with the narrator then commenting, ‘Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama just said they’d solve the problem by raising your taxes — more money out of your pockets.’”

“The advertisements highlighted how the two parties’ candidates have developed starkly different approaches to the housing meltdown, with Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton calling for billions of dollars in aid for distressed homeowners and Mr. McCain warning against costly federal intervention. Mr. McCain’s rapid response recalled a similar advertisement by the Obama campaign in response to Mrs. Clinton’s original red-phone advertisement, which questioned Mr. Obama’s readiness to be president."

The Los Angeles Times does a fact-check of sorts on Clinton's Iraq policy promises. "Clinton has touted her role in the congressional effort to force President Bush to bring the troops home. ‘I've been working day in and day out in the Senate to provide leadership to end this war,’ Clinton recently told an audience at George Washington University, contrasting her experience with that of rival Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.’ … But since Democrats took control of Congress, Clinton has done relatively little to advance legislation to force the Bush administration to withdraw from Iraq, according to congressional records and lawmakers and staff members who have worked on the issue.”

”Instead, Clinton largely remained on the sidelines of the congressional debate, her legislation ignored as the Senate focused on measures developed by lawmakers who were more central to the legislative drive to end the war.”

USA Today’s editorial page does something it rarely does: It hits a candidate pretty hard. Today, it calls on Bill Clinton to release the names of donors to his foundations. "[G]iven Clinton's unusual circumstances, gifts to his foundation could rightly be seen as a back door into the good graces of someone who could be a key adviser to the next president. The stakes are simply too high not to have principles of open government take precedence over common fundraising practices."

Per NBC’s John Boxley, Clinton will be on the “Ellen” for a taping today; the show will air Monday. This taping will take place following her appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Clinton's tactics HAVE turned off this former, core supporter -- I'm a woman and a resident of NY, and after Clinton's display of gutter politics I'm finished with her for good. I'll never vote for her again, even for Senator. This is exactly when the primary race turned negative: when she knew she was going to lose. And it did occur to me a long time ago, that if she couldn't win the nomination, she was out to ruin Obama's chances in November, so that she could make another self-righteous told-ya-so run at it in four years. The truly disgusting aspect is that she doesn't care what this does to the Democratic party, or to you and me, in the process. I feel like I am seeing her and Bill clearly for the first time, and it nauseates me. Go Obama '08. You're my candidate now.
"How the Clinton's tactics are not turning off her core support(women0 is a wonder to me.
If it was Obama saying all those things about Clinton .. there would be a massive backlash ... including from African Americans.
UNBELIEVABLE !"
NO!!! Obama has received 9 to 1 voting from blacks in some areas.  There wouldn't be a backlash. they would accept it and continue to support him.  In the same manner the Obama has done with his church leader.  Obama has a united black vote, but if obama isn't in the race who are they going to vote for? Johny boy... No it will be for a Dem. Then Hilldog will have the women vote, black vote, and latino vote. now look at it the other way, clinton is out. Is her going to get the women vote.  Is he going to win the Swing states Ohio, Florida?  These states have controled the election the past 8 years and he didn't win either.  Hilliary has a better chance in the general election when electoral college votes matter!
It looks like Hillary Clinton tactics is to let Obama lose, so that she might have a chance to ran again in the year 2012.  If this is her tactics she should think again because there are thing people forgive but not forget and it might come back and hurt her in her future political career elsewhere. The best way to exit a race is to leave with people liking you. Remember she has a daughter who might someday run for an office and Hillary should not make it harder for her should that chance come someday because people will throw it in her face as mother being the spoiler.  There are more for Hillary to gain exiting graciously than to make it obvious that she left the race losing.  Is no healthy situation when she is fighting with all her previous friends.  You fight for your party but not against your party.
Where did her experience and guts come in to play when she voted to go along with bush administration and drag our country into war? If she had guts and so called experience under sniper fire, she should have said no to ware...

experience and guts don't count in my book if the person can't exercise good judgement...

OBAMA 08
A lot is being said about the Michigan and Florida delegates and no fair solution has been advanced so far but if Obama can win or at least narrow the gap in Pennsylvania some more (so far I believe Clinton holds a 9 point lead in a recent Gallop poll), the matter should be a lot easier to figure out.  If he can narrow a 20 point gap to say 5 points or so, it signifies that that he could probably do the same in Michigan and Florida if a fair contest there were in the cards.  Using that logic, maybe the delegates in those two states could be apportioned according the results in Pennsylvania.  It's a thought and makes at least as much sense to me as any other proposal that has been mentioned so far.  The main point though is that Obama wouldn't lose big in those two states and Clinton doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt there.
Let's look at the facts: Obama is a ruthless social climber who likes to parody great men in history like Lincoln and Kennedy.  He has next to no record, yet he feels comfortable putting himself in their category.  He is using the "fake it before you make it" strategy.
I can't believe that Richardson would have said that he wouldn't endorse anyone...  How could you say that he couldn't win.  Everyone has a potential to win, granted some are smaller than others.

Given that she has trouble getting those that call themselves independants, how can she say that she will do better than McCain?  There is some concern that the winning candidate will need to draw from all walks of life.  Can she do that as well as Obama?
Ah, the BALD_FACED LIAR is saying "Obama can't win?"...that clearly translates onto YES HE CAN!
I am NOT sure if obama can't win.

That is similar to what I read here

http://www.audacityofChange.com
Sounds kind of desperate to me.

If he cannot win why are you crying about Richardson?

Don`t let the door knob hit ya!  LOL!!!

Go Obama '08

All clintons are liars, this is proven true of bill "i did not have sex with that woman" clinton and hillary "dodging sniper fire" clinton.
One little-noticed effect of all these stupid 3:00 a.m. ads is that their impact has been totally diminished if not demolished.  People have stopped paying attention to them, short of just rolling their eyes.  If John McCain had planned to use any version of the 3:00 a.m. ad to attack Obama in the general, good luck with all that.  It's a dead horse.
Hillary and Bill are typical baby boomers who are selfish and will lie in every situation to get what they want.  To them, the end justifies the means.  Hillary is laughing at you with her lesbo friends.  Bill is laughing at you during his cigar orgies.  Wake up, America.  Your chickens have come home to roost.  Wright was right.

Hot 25yo white chick for Obama.
How does Clinton's saying what she did about Obama lift the country? Is this what we want for the next 4 years? Lying Clintons eliciting sympathy for being the target of a "vast right wing conspiracy" or putting people down. She is now ready to jump in bed with the very person (billionaire Mr. Schaife) who was at the helm of that right wing conspiracy. Does this woman have ANY principles?
Obama can't win and it would be a sad day if he ever came close.  For all the lying Hillary does, Obama is just more shifty about his own misleading statements.  At the end of the day, he's telling everyone what he thinks they want to hear--he just does a much better job of misleading people.  If he's the democratic nominee, I guarantee the whole pastor issue will be right back out in the open.  He's fooling himself if he thinks that is swept under the rug.  Pair the absolutely insane statements of his pastor of 20 years (such as "The white man invented AIDS to destroy the black man"), with the anti-America sentiment of Obama's own wife, and you've got an easy target in the general election.  Take either of these democratic candidates and compare them to John McCain who appeals to people on both sides of the isle and you've got a tough contest for the democrats.  So far the best insult either Hillary or Obama has been able to come up with is comparing McCain to Bush.  It's just not going to cut it.
"Barry"  Barry?  So is that the new insult?  Calling Obama "Barry"?  That somehow minimizes him?  Grow up.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HILARYS LYING, DECEPTIVE CAMPAGN: The Los Angeles Times: "Clinton has touted her role in the congressional effort to force President Bush to bring the troops home. ‘I've been working day in and day out in the Senate to provide leadership to end this war,’_But since Democrats took control of Congress, Clinton has done relatively little to advance legislation to force the Bush administration to withdraw from Iraq, according to congressional records and lawmakers and staff members who have worked on the issue.”

”Instead, Clinton largely remained on the sidelines of the congressional debate, her legislation ignored as the Senate focused on measures developed by lawmakers who were more central to the legislative drive to end the war.”
EVEN HER OWN PARTY MEMBERS NO LONGER LISTEN TO HER.

HILARY, PLEASE DON'T EMBARRASE YOURSELF ANY LONGER. YOU AND YOUR LOUDMOUTH "CHIL OUT" IDIOT HUSBAND SHOULD JUST GO AWAY.

Yeah, I'm certain that a year ago there were far more people who would have said that Obama couldn't win the Democratic nomination either. And look at what he has accomplished.

Throw conventional wisdom out the window - he has created the most successful grassroots campaign in recent history and he has gone from being a relitively unknown Illinois Senator to challenge and beat the decades old machine of a former and popular President. wow. Yeah, I think he can win...I'm just looking forward to see how well he does it.

Hillary is despirite.
Hillary is the one person who would come out and say something so ignorant. Americans are fed up with the way that Republicans are leading this country! It has shown both in the 06' elections and in the numbers of Democrat voters compared to Republican voters in states that held primaries for both parties. The winning Democrat candidate will become our next President, and that candidate will be OBAMA!
After everyone finds out Bill Clinton never had a surplus and never paid down the national debt.......Hillary will never win.

Look on Yahoo.com and use Yahoo's search engine. Search for,( Public Debt to the Penny). This is the United States Treasuries website. Look on the left hand side of the page for, (Historical Debt Outstanding). This lists the United States debt in 50 year increments from the inception of the United States.

The last time the debt was paid down was 1957!!!!!!
President Bush gave everyone a tax cut on Bill Clinton's lie.
Hillary was standing by her man when he lied about this. Why would we vote another liar into the Oval Office?
Obama can't win - simple fact - if he runs - watch  the Republicans open up their ad campaign on him - he doesn't stand a chance.
The novelty interest will have played out by November
rbs nj
It seems as if Hillary will do and say anything to upstep Obama.  Personally, the vibe that Hillary emits is vindictive, and I can't bring myself to trust a word that comes out of her mouth anymore. I believe that she should focus on retaining her seat in the Senate, before she loses that too.
Hillary does not seem to understand something: It's over.  Thousands (if not millions) of people who would never regularly vote have been brought into the system because of the one thing Obama offers that she does not: Hope.  Obama, love him or hate him, offers our country a fresh start. McCain and Clinton shackle us to the past. For those out there that fear Obama may be too "liberal" for their tastes, consider this: Between the war and the Medicaid Perscription Drug give away, Bush has spent more money for a war and social programs than LBJ or any democrat ever.
So...the idea that the Republicans will suddenly return to some old-style fiscal responsibility is a pipe dream.
I rather be water bording than giving my vote to hillary
the lier. You do not intitle the presidency Hillary, infact you will lose the next senat seat I will garante you.go take a long vacation.........
