Obama: Will the Clinton camp pounce?

Posted: Friday, April 04, 2008 8:56 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

Is this more proof that no matter who is elected, some troops won't be leaving Iraq anytime soon? The New York Sun: "A key adviser to Senator Obama’s campaign is recommending in a confidential paper that America keep between 60,000 and 80,000 troops in Iraq as of late 2010, a plan at odds with the public pledge of the Illinois senator to withdraw combat forces from Iraq within 16 months of taking office.”

“The paper, obtained by The New York Sun, was written by Colin Kahl for the center-left Center for a New American Security. In ‘Stay on Success: A Policy of Conditional Engagement,’ Mr. Kahl writes that through negotiations with the Iraqi government ‘the U.S. should aim to transition to a sustainable over-watch posture (of perhaps 60,000–80,000 forces) by the end of 2010 (although the specific timelines should be the byproduct of negotiations and conditions on the ground).’”

“Mr. Kahl is the day-to-day coordinator of the Obama campaign’s working group on Iraq. A shorter and less detailed version of this paper appeared on the center’s Web site as a policy brief. Both Mr. Kahl and a senior Obama campaign adviser reached yesterday said the paper does not represent the campaign’s Iraq position. Nonetheless, the paper could provide clues as to the ultimate size of the residual American force the candidate has said would remain in Iraq after the withdrawal of combat brigades. The campaign has not publicly discussed the size of such a force in the past."

Since a recent study has shown tat recently a thousand Iraqis deserted their posts or ran from fire, why negotiate.  The "government" of Iraq wants to haggle and vacation, and its army and police won't fight.  Why are we dying for these people?  Why is my money going to help these people.  CUT OUR LOSSES AND GET OUT NOW!! I'll vote for whoever will do that.

I do think that it is important that we make it clear that the Iraqi govt needs to shoulder ALL of the responsibility of securing their country and our troops and money will not be there forever on the frontlines. 60-80K troops is far less than the 140-160K troops that are there now.

It is not realistic to think that on 1/5/09, we can fully withdraw.
I am not concerned that position papers are exploring lots of options.  I would be more concerned if people WERE NOT looking at contingencies.

I am voting for a President who will make a commitment to making it a top priority to get out as soon as possible (obviously we all know that things can change in the World and any moment and that the particulars still need to be worked out).  It is a clear articulation of mindset that matters to me, because that's where you have to start.

Obama 08

ps, you know the Clinton campaign (and really all of them at this point, will pounce on anything as you in the media do :) )
No doubt the Clinton campaign will rabidly chomp on this dry bone.

Nevertheless, key advisor, is not Senator Obama. Obama has said, consistently, he will have advisors in his ear who he hopes will offer him advice opposing his ideas for his consideration. That is good. It's just one of the reasons I intend to vote for him.

The final judgement, however will made by President Obama, should we elect him as our Commander In Chief.

Pulling for Obama '08
Senator Obama has said many times that he wants to surround himself with advisors who have different opinions, not just "yes men".

It is not surprising or controversial that an advisor to the Obama campaign would present an alternative stategic vision to the horrible mess we face in Iraq. The existence of different viewpoint on Iraq within the Obama campaign is actually GREAT NEWS, not a problem.

I sincerely hope that Americans have not become so conditioned to the "no dissent" style of governing from the Bush campaign, that thoughtful governance now appears shocking.

Nothing to pounce on here.  One Obama adviser among many has offered this advice.  Where's any hint of evidence that this argument has gained the upper hand with Obama?  He's said that he wants a cabinet that has debates and presents a range of views.  Remember, this isn't boy W. idiot we're talking about here, but a sentient candidate (indeed a very smart candidate) who is not a puppet of his advisers.  There's no controversy here.
I guess the paper wasn't that confidential after all.

Of course the Clinton Campaign will pounce...

"Oh, look!  Oh, look!  He's saying one thing and doing another!  Oh, look!"

Whatever...there's something to be said about having an advisor to your campaign who holds a differing opinion on an issue to the one you hold.
"A key adviser to Senator Obama’s campaign is recommending in a confidential paper that America keep between 60,000 and 80,000 troops in Iraq as of late 2010,"
*************************

So she is "recommending" it.... and? It might be newsworthy if the paper said Obama agreed.
Uh, Obama would take office in Jan 2009... 2010 is less than 16 months from him taking office.  I don't see any contradiction
Nothing to pounce on here. To think ANY candidate can withdraw all our troops is unreaslistic. I am voting for the candidate that can assess the situation and make a sound judgement as far as an exit strategy would best be achieved and so far, Obama is the only one I have faith can do just that. He has an ability to review the situation, think outside the box and make a sound judgement. I'll trust his decision once he gets ALL the infomration he needs.....I'm sure none of them are privy to ALL the information they need to make a judgement right now.
For teh grace of God!!!
only naive and ignorant people really belief that Obama will do what he preaching,  Obama only want to be the honor of beeen the first black president, he is not worry about:
African American
Economy
Iraq
NAFTO
either the future of this country,

Obama is not going to do anything. STOP PUTTING YOUR HOPE IN THAT GUY, he is just another BUSH, ONLY SPEAKING, PREACHING, PROMISING AND NOTHIGN ELSE.

Many people around the world, specially in Europe, they look at the AMerican people as dummass, stupid, ignorant, WHY? becasue they let Bush fooled them twice.  and it is posible that it will be the 3rd time by electing Obama...
Imagine how the gutter Obama campaign and MSNBC would pounce if this was a Hillary advisor.

And imagine how all the Obama supporters on this blog would be whining about Hillary lying about Iraq.

That's why so many of us Hillary supporters are SERIOUSLY consudering sitting this election out if Obama is the nominee.

And you CANNOT win without us.

No you can't ......
HMMM Speak out of both sides of their mouth HMMM Clinton? ,No ST. Obama. Oh also  I loved his answer On Obamaphile Chris Matthes show. He was asked how he would handle a 3a.m call about an emergency like 911.If true to his word, rich half of America would be blown up while he was out conferring and getting intelligence.Keep drinking the koolaid DittoBamas you are gonna need it
Just because an adviser recommends something does not mean the candidate will follow that person's advice. It's quite simple to understand. Are we to believe that Obama, Clinton OR McCain all agree with everything their advisers and supporters say?  If so, that means that Clinton totally agrees with Penn on the Colombian trade pact. Which I'm pretty sure she doesn't. No, this is a non-story at best.
MSNBC, tell us something that we do not know about Obama.

He makes lots of promises in public while in private is planning to do the opposite once elected
Oh yes we can csh, Il!! That's become our motto, don't you know. We don't "need" any of you that think that by not voting it will someone vindicate Hillary because Obama has registered more people in this election cycle than ANYONE has ever done before. So, my dear friends, you will be REPLACED by younger, more enthusiastic, smarter people and Obama will become President whether you like it or not! So, go ahead and stay home.....we really don't need you!
Has anyone looked at the pro-Hillary website, www.hillaryis44.com?  I am shaken up at how vitriolic the posts are.  There are people urging others to listen to Bill O'Reilly talk about race.  REALLY?  Bill O'Reilly on race.  The man who was surprised black people use silverware when he went to the Harlem restaurant.  They are also urging people to listen to Ferraro on Hannity and Colmes.  I am baffled.  Talk about wanting to stick with explosive topics and not focus on issues.  I am truly amazed how far her supporters have reached...all the way to the right.  This needs to stop.  I am an Obama supporter and will defend Obama all the way to the end but for this to stop it needs to stop on both ends.  Check out what Donna Brazile, an official Clinton supporter, has said about the nasty comments left by Clinton supporters and how badly she was attacked. Supporters are calling her a traitor, commenting on her "fat booty", accusing her of being a secret Obama supporter.  It's as if you state your own mind, you are anti-Hillary.  It is so reflective of what is happening to Bill Richardson.  It reminds me of Lord of the Flies.  Truly amazing.  It is getting really bad but they don't care.

Obama hasn't a clue.  I can't imagine him in charge of the military.  He just doesn't get it. He tells folks what he thinks they want to hear and it is wearing a little thin.

To Latino and csh:

It is funny how violently some people react to the very concept of "hope". We've tried the old way, it didn't work.

Here's hoping things improve for you both. It's always darkest before the dawn.

This idea of leaving troops in Iraq is in case what we broke isn't fully fixed by the time we plan on leaving.  If plan on leaving without everything in place, then we will have to worry about Al Qeada or Iran (possible for both) to set up training camps in Iraq to train people to attack the U.S. or Israel and other allies.  It would have been smarter to have finished Afghanistan first, but someone was in a real rush to play bigshot; take your pick of who (Bush 43, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz etc).
Wow, you're really thinking there.
Lets hold our breath if we don't win!
TO ALL THE CLINTON SUUPPORTERS:

Where is the controversy here?  Senator Obama has repeatedly said that he wants people at the table advising him that don't hold the same opinion, view, position as he does.  He does not want Yes women and men! As this report clearly states, it is only this man's recommendation - that is all.  It is not Senator Obama's position, not the campaign's position.

Doesn't it make sense that Sen Obama would want opinions from a lot of different people, with different views -- and then put forward his policy after carefully considering all of them?

Hmmm... talking out of both sides of their mouth!  Lying?Hmmm..Could it be Hillary?  Hmmm Damn,if it aint St. Obama.Who Knew?he'just a good all run of the mill politician afterall. By the way I loved his response on Chris Matthews show .When asked about his response to a 911 like emergency call at 3 a.m. If we take him at his word,as all of you Barack worshippers insist we must,I am afraid half of America will be destroyed as he sits on his butt gathering intelligence and conferring. What a moron.
For csh, IL:  Obama gutter campaign?

Your remarks sound like they came straight out of one.
All nastiness -- and threats - no substance.

TYPICAL!!!!!

1. Colin Kahl is an advisor to Mr. Obama, one of many, he is not the ultimate decision-maker, that task will rest with Mr. Obama, if he is elected. I would be concerned if he was listening to just one point of view. The fact is that the figures in itself would be a dramatic reduction from the current 150,000. Also a responsible withdrawal from Iraq is needed, and one thing the Iraq government would be sure of with an Obama administration is that they must learn to ride the bicycle without perpetual assistance.
2. If the Clinton supporters want to make much of this then we can also make much of the fact that Marc Penn visited the Colombian embassy to support a trade bill that Hillary opposes.

3. To: csl, IL, you can't win without us either, so I hope everyone comes to there senses after this over. To:LATINO CIHCAGO IL, so you are so sure that Hillary would do all that she is promising? Actually many people in Europe think that electing Obama would be good and a  radical change from electing Dubya, and that doesn't mean that I care about what some elites in Europe might think
csh, IL

Well said! The biased reports from medias like msnbc and cnn are as shameful as Rush radio show . The last thing that can be said about this dem race is fairness.
CSH? Sit out, cause it will be so much better for America with McCain in office. We need a democrat, don't be ignorant.
It really is amazing, and more telling than this country would like to admit, how Sen. Obama is being attacked within and without his political party.

It's one thing to have a vigorous rivalry between party contenders for the nominee, but another altogether to have those contenders pouncing upon every breath from his campaign.

I've lived through many many presidential campaigns and never, absolutely never have I seen the campaigners' every word and relationship become the issue.

If such standards had been used, and are presently used for everyone in the race instead of only for Sen. Obama in this particular race, then I doubt this country would have suffered the last 7 years under the leadership of two men who avoided military service during a national draft, and whose very lengthy, business relationship are the height of unscrupulous.

It's really time Americans employed their own COMMON SENSE instead of allowing their opinions to be shaped and reshaped by whatever is repeatedly printed or spoken in the news.

If we even employed the tiniest measure of that sense, we would realize no sensible presidential candidate would have an all inclusive, detailed, workable plan for any of his/her campaign promises.

Wake up folks use your minds.
CSH, IL
i AGREED 10000% WITH YOU.  NO VOTING AT ALL, ID ONT WANT TO SUPPORT ANOTHER BUSH IN THE WHITE HOUSE.  JUST A BLACK MEN PRODUCT OF MEDIA AND AA LACK OF SENSE AND EMOTION CONTROL.
I find this ridiculous. Most Obama supporters are so apologetic to Obama that it is scary. It makes me think that Obama supporters, at least those on blogs, will let Obama get away with anything (which is not good for anyone). The fact is this goes against the overall message of Obama, who alludes that he will begin withdrawal of troops or the beginning phase right when he get's into office. If anything this story illustrates that Obama will follow the Bush policy on Iraq or a similar one, the idea of withdrawal on success? Am I right is Obama going to withdrawal if disaster hits Iraq? If anything McCain should pounce on this story, Obama has not given any real details, besides 16 months (yeah right let's see if this will happen), and this story indicates that no matter what there may be an American force in Iraq indefinitely. Thus, Obama and Hillary have not given a date or an indication when all or even if all U.S presence will leave Iraq. To me this is no different than McCain's '100 years' comment; if anything at least we know where he stands on the issue. Am I wrong?
Gonzalo,

You've apparently missed the Clinton supporters seeking to defend her lying about a number of things and then having the nerve to joke about her Bosnia lie on Leno.  That is the height of bravado in defending the indefensible.
