Clinton and your money

Posted: Friday, April 04, 2008 12:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro

How exactly do you want Hillary Clinton to spend YOUR money?

Below is a fundraising e-mail from Clinton, in which she writes of a new Web program where supporters can direct how their money is allocated in Pennsylvania: to TV, online or radio ads, lawn signs, vans or door hangers.

Clinton also talks about how she's being outspent by Obama "by as much as 4 to 1 -- I need your help now."

The Clinton campaign also announced in a statement that of the $20 million raised in March, $15 million of it was raised online.)

Here's the e-mail:

Dear ,

We need yard signs to show our campaign's strength.

We need vans to get Pennsylvania voters to the polls on April 22.

We need ads on the air and online to compete against the Obama campaign.

And starting today, you can decide just how your contributions will help us win Pennsylvania.

MyPA, our new online effort dedicated to winning the Pennsylvania primary on April 22, allows you to designate exactly where you want your money to go.

This campaign is your campaign. Every single day I think about how much I owe to your generosity and hard work. I wouldn't be where I am now without your support. So, I want to make sure you have a say in how your money is spent. We face an opponent who is outspending us by as much as 4 to 1 -- I need your help now.

Click here to visit MyPA, make a contribution, and tell us where to put your dollars in our campaign to win Pennsylvania!

I need your help to win in Pennsylvania and the races beyond. Your commitment and your investment are absolutely critical. I cannot win without your help.

I hope you'll show your support now and tell us exactly where you want your money spent in our Pennsylvania campaign.

I appreciate all your input, all your support, and all the hard work you do.

Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

stick a fork in her.
Um, what?
Is HRC admitting her campaign managers don't know how to manage her money?
Or are they duping her donors into *thinking* they have some control over how this ends?
How about paying the small business vendors in Ohio...then how about psychiatric care for the lying problem.

Couldn't resist.  Oh, don't fret my remarks.  I was just JOKING!  Pretty funny, huh.

Sounds like MSNBC is campaigning to help raise funds for Clinton--bad form MSNBC
STOP spending my money on MARK PENN!
I guess if chief campaign strategist was running off supporting trade deals with Columbia that I allegedly didn't support (although who knows if that's true?), then I would be looking for help in how to spend contributions too.  When I contribute to the Obama campaign, I trust that Axelrod, Pfouffe, et.al. know how to spend it most effectively.
I'd like me money to go towards buying a big bright happy bow to wrap the gift you are giving McCain.
Chuck,

And you felt the need to post this letter, why?  Was it sent to you? No!  Have you posted any of Obama's requests for cash?  No!  MSNBC continues to belittle EVERYTHING she does, will publishing nothing but praise for Obama.   I know this will never get posted, because of you bias approach to this campaign.  Tell me I'm wrong.
Stay in the race Hillary, just to piss off all the insecure men in this country(millions). I just sent you another $200. Obama sucks. He and his wife are schiesty.
Pay YOUR BILLS first!
Release your $50 million TAX RETURNS!
I'd like her to buy a horse, put on a red coat and gallop all over the country -

A recession is coming! A recession is coming!
BTW, when I first saw your opening sentence I just about had a heart attack.  I thought OMG I don't want Hillary spending my money!!!  Then I read the rest of the article.  Way to get my blood pressure up Domenico :).
Where does Barry get all his money, I think it needs to be looked into......him, Rezko, Wright, he's is NOT the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ
This is great news for Hillary Clinton!
I don't know which is sadder --

~ the swift boaters who will actually run the character assassination campaigns for the betterment of the rich (and the poor get poorer)

~ or the idiots who will believe that the swift boaters have their best interests at heart (not!)

~ or the idiots who think that voting against 'gay marriage' and against 'abortion rights' will put food on the table -- once again (not!).

The dumbing down of America is stunning.

Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Just give "I," I mean us the cash already!!!  "I," I mean we'll spend it on anything you want.  How will you know what your money has been spent on?  I will release my campaigns financial records after the election, then you'll know (wink wink)!
This is either a disingenuous attempt at making supporters feel more involved than they are, or a serious insult to her campaign staff.

If I was a candidate, I'd hire staff who I was pretty sure had a better idea than the average party member about how to run a campaign. Spend plans are a big, big part of that "how to."

Leaders need to lead. To use Clinton's own silly mental images, at 3 a.m. when the phone rings, it isn't realistic to rely on e-mails from supporters about how to respond.

Granted, campaign spending doesn't have the same urgency, but why in the world did she pick the advisors and staffers she did, if she doesn't even trust them to propose sound spend plans?
Hillary, turn out the lights and shut the door on your way out.

indiana voter
Mac, honestly being an Obama supporter I can tell you that Obama does not request cash that much.  And the appeals are posted on his web site.  Here's the link in case you want to venture over there.

So now that her campaign is literally on the ropes, it is "your campaign". Before PA it was the Clintons' campaign; it was "her" campaign. She was the presumptive nominee, remember?? But now that she is going the way of the dodo, she has decided she better pander to her supporters and tell them they matter in her campaign?

And isn't she really saying, "Look......we only have so much money here. I have done a terrible job so far in how our campaign has spent your donations. So maybe you guys can help me out. How should I spend YOUR money? Should I pay Mark Penn a bigger salary? Should I order more donuts? Let me know what I should do, will you?? I'm sleep deprived and the noise from all the sniper fire is distracting my thought process. Thank you for your support."

Please...................

Compare that to Obama's latest email.

Friend --

I want to tell you about one of the most exciting projects of this campaign. It's called the Obama Organizing Fellowship.

When I was a young man, I was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and the idea of people working at a grassroots level to bring about change.

I got my chance on the South Side of Chicago, as a community organizer, and it was the transformative experience of my career.

It allowed me to put my values to work and to see that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up, when ordinary people come together around a common purpose.

The experience changed the course of my life -- and I want to share that kind of opportunity with you.

That's why we're introducing a program that's going to train a new generation of leaders -- not only to help us win this election, but to help strengthen our democracy in communities across the country.

If you apply and are selected, you'll be trained in the basic organizing principles that this campaign and our movement for change are built on. You will be assigned to a community where you'll organize supporters. Assignments will begin in June, and you'll be required to work a minimum of six weeks over the summer.

This program is designed to give you real world organizing experience that will have a concrete impact on this election.

Apply to be an Obama Organizing Fellow and put progressive values to work in the real world:

http://my.barackobama.com/fellows

If you can't take the time away from work or your family that's required for the fellowship program, you can still get involved.

Reach out to someone you know who may be interested in this program, and let them know we could use their help:
http://my.barackobama.com/fellowsinvite

House an Organizing Fellow -- If you have a spare room, you can help by offering housing to an Organizing Fellow near their training or near their eventual assignment. We haven't set locations for all of the trainings and assignments, but if you sign up, our staff will be in touch as the campaign grows:
http://my.barackobama.com/fellowshousing

Support this program by making a donation to this campaign:
https://donate.barackobama.com/fellowsdonate

Being a community organizer wasn't easy, but it was the most valuable education I ever received. It taught me that together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Organizing changed my life, and I hope it changes yours.

Thanks,

Barack Obama

Why don't you just go ahead and give Hillary a free banner ad inaddition to your free posting of her appeal letter for donations.
Obama has shown he can raise support from the "common" person without the help of big lobbyists and big businesses like MSNBC or GE thank you very much.
Pay your outstanding debts, Senator Clinton.  Your campaign finances are a disgrace.
Give it up Hillary, Obama is the most effective person to run the country. You have told too many lies that are catching up with you. No intergrity on your part! Obama 08'
Could SOMEBODY, ANYBODY that still thinks Clinton is the best choice for President please articulate why?  This is a serious question.  Her entire candidacy was based on two things: 1) inevitability and 2) experience.  With the recent implosion of the experience claims, I'm wondering what else there is.  Yes, it would be wonderful to have a woman President.  But are people still casting their votes just because she's a woman?
MAC - are you new here? First Read prints a lot of fundraisers from all campaigns. Especially ones like this that are interesting out of weirdness.
Who'd I rather drink a beer with? Obama or McCain? Of course, McCain.

Who'd I rather have on TV in my living room over the next four years? Obama or McCain? Of course, McCain.

I'm a lunch-bucket Democrat. If not Hillary, McCain in '08.
Please spend your money at Kinko's.  Photocopying your tax returns.
I hope Clinton donors are OK with the fact that the Clinton campaign has wasted $10M on Mark Penn's consulting firm.
Maybe Mark Penn is trying to convince the Colombians to contribute to the Clinton campaign. Of course if they just gave the money to Bill, they would get a better return for their dollars.

I wonder how much Mark Penn is charging the Clinton campaign for his services? Isn't that a great position to be in? Penn is making money from the Clintons, the McCain campaign, and also at the same time from the Colombians.

Additionally, Hillary wouldn't allow for conflict of interest to exist (she was or is a lawyer isn't she?), so her position on the Colombian trade agreements that Penn is negotiating has to be consistent with Penn's. It will be interesting to see the end result and what Hillary's position is.
This is how Barack inspires people, which is what a leader is supposed to do.

Think about the message that you are sending to today's youth when you disparage people.

Vote Democratic 2008
j fl,
I find it amazing the denial that certain women are living in.  The constant refrain is: "if you don't think that Hillary is the 2nd coming, you are a sexist, insecure, male chauvinist."

Take this for what it's worth: you can continue to live in denial but the fact is that people do not respect her.  Period.  And it has nothing to do with her sex.  Yes, there are indeed chauvinist pigs out there who would never vote for a woman.  But when you comfort yourself that all men are against Hillary because they're chauvinist pigs, it is YOU who are blind.
Obama hasn't raised 4x as much a Clinton.  How is that he is able to outspend her by so much?  Where is all of her money going?
I have a big pile of money from an old, but vanishshed, Monopoly game. She can use that to buy lots of vans. Wish she would quit.
How exactly do you want Hillary Clinton to spend YOUR money?

I read her earmark spending in the congressional pork book.  Quite a bit of OUR money she has spent in her state for nothing at all.

I want her to take OUR money and return it to the people.  All the money she has received could have paid for a lot of students to attend college or get jobs training or vocational training.  She could give that money to help the poor with their energy bills.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOO.....

Hillary Clinton wants to take OUR money and do what she needs to do illegal or legal to become President of the United States.  She cares nothing or ordinary people.

The again, she may need OUR money to defend herself in court against some of the stuff that will be coming up soon.....

Hillary, here is a tip; free of charge....

Take some of that $30 million that Bill got off those stock options he sold last month that was guaranteed by the Chinese government and use that to fund your campaign.

Hillary, you have shown the world you cannot run this great country, much less your own campaign!
I have an Idea of how Senator Clinton can spend that money. How about spending it on all those people you talk about in your speaches that need help. I think they can use it ALOT more than your dying campaign. Or maybe to buy yourself a REALITY CHECK
Well, First of all~~She isn't getting my money!!
Then Second~~~ She isn't getting my money!!
Then Third!!! Did I say she wasn't getting my money?
It is actually a pretty smart attempt at trying to capitalize on a trend in non-profit world. More and more people want to control where their donations are going. They don't want to just give money to the zoo, they specifically want it to go to helping the Panda. In some cases people have chosen not to donate when they had no control over exactly how the money is spent. It will be interesting to see if the amount of donations go up because of perceived control over where the money goes.
the death throws of a power ful politician are better than wacthing reality tv amazing
McCain, huh? Yeh, Bush hasn't done enough damage...let's put McCain in there and destroy the currency in total, maim some more of our troops in Iraq, start a new war in Iran and drown the country in debt for ever and ever.

yep, McCain is the way to go.
How about paying your bills Hillary?  Shame on you for not paying your campaign staffer's health insurance premiums.  Shame on you for not paying vendors in Ohio, and elsewhere, that need to be paid to feed their families.

Shame on you.
I think its an interesting tactic (being serious for a moment).  But when I think about it, I don't need to have Obama ask that.  I have been extraordinarily impressed with how he's run his campaign.  I actually do trust him with my money.

And that says a lot.

Obama for President 08
(btw Pat in Boston, I am so glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read your posting, I haven't laughed so hard in a good long while)
I'm really appalled that the comments on this story are this vile. If we want to turn this into a civil campaign, it needs to start with the public demanding that the acrimony be toned down.  So many of the talking heads think that it's ok to call people names and say nasty things. That's not helpful. We need to show the world that we're better than that.
Here's my input for Senator Clinton.

First, pay off your campaign debts. Second, give what's left to me. I need a couple new pairs of socks, and that ought to about cover it.
Isn't sending Clinton money like Direct Deposit into an account with a negative balance? Nothing good will come of it!

I honestly think this blog entry invited some humor.  And given that Hillary was on Leno last night, hey, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Smiles!
Clinton shows more and more every day that she doesn't have the skills to run the country . . . she can't even manage her own campaign.

Budget problems, intense infighting in her own staff, incredible negativism, lying to the public, hiding and/or refusing to release information, entire states ignored early in the primaries because she thought she didn't need them . . . ALL OF THESE ARE PREVIEWS OF WHAT HER PRESIDENCY WOULD BE LIKE
The posting of j,fl in this blog is evidence that there are women who are supporting HRC just for feminist reasons. That is so sad. Even Obama was not getting black support till he won Iowa and came close in NH which shows that they wanted someone they know and can win.
Stop spending my money on...
1) Wolfson (ties to drug companies that are making faulty drugs
2) Williams (on the board of directors for leading sub-prime mortgage company).
3) Mark Penn (negotiating trade deals with Columbia and  represents company that makes Aquadots that harmed our children).
