MISSOULA, MT -- Montana's primary is still two months away, but Obama made a stop in Big Sky country this morning, bringing a strong anti-war message to a morning rally here.
Obama told the crowd that only he could be trusted to the bring the Iraq war to an end because he was the only candidate left in the race who opposed it from the beginning.
"So when somebody asks you, who you want answering the phone call at 3:00 in the morning, you tell 'em that [sic] want somebody who will actually read the intelligence, who will actually listen to the Senate views. Who will weigh the costs and the benefits of any action that's taken," he said, hitting both McCain and Clinton for not reading the National Intelligence Estimate before the voting on the Iraq war.
"You want in other words somebody with some good judgment, and I am happy to stack up my judgment against the other two candidate's judgment because they had their chance and they made the wrong choice. And you want somebody who will make the right choices answering that phone call at 3 o'clock in the morning," Obama added.
It should be noted that only six senators read the National Intelligence Estimate before the Iraq war vote. Some, like former Sen. Bob Graham, cited the estimate as a primary reason for his opposition to the 2002 Iraq war authorization. Others, like Jay Rockefeller, still voted for the war despite the report questioning intelligence that there really were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Playing up the anti-Washington message, Obama told the crowd that it wasn't just the "Republican status quo" but also some of the "Democratic status quo" that would resist the change that he represents.
"They're gonna resist change, because change is scary. Change is different. Sometimes even, we ourselves we're doubtful and we're fearful. And then politicians play on that fear," he said, pointing to the 3:00 am. ads that have seized the national attention.
"That's what that 3:00 am phone call ad was all about. To be afraid of what you're not used to. Doubt. It feeds into a cynicism," he said.
Weaving some economic lines into his stump, Obama said that he knew people in Montana and Wyoming were feeling more of the pinch from high gas prices because of the driving that they do here.
Appearing inspired by the mountainous landscape in Missoula, Obama told the crowd that he felt like take up fly-fishing. "This is some pretty country. I think I need to learn fly fishing. Get some waders, go out there, clear my head. We may have to come back to Missoula. There's no doubt about it," he said.
*** UPDATE *** Republican National Committee spokesman Danny Diaz responds to Obama: "As Barack Obama travels the country distorting Senator McCain's record his claims to represent a new brand of politics become more and more fictional. Obama continues to talk about his judgment but he can't even demonstrate the good judgment to repudiate a smear against Senator McCain's character."
