Obama's trip out West

Posted: Sunday, April 06, 2008 11:37 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
BUTTE, MT -- The only thing Barack Obama needed to complete his Western swing was a pair of cowboy boots.

Campaigning in Butte and Missoula, MT yesterday, Obama declared that he wanted to learn how to fly fish, joked about drinking beer, and said he was on a search for Sen. Jon Tester's barber.

"Ten two, ten two, ten two," he chanted, indicating the directions in which fly fishermen cast their rods.

In North Dakota yesterday, he greeted the crowd with an "Uff da," which means "oh my!" in Norwegian as he received a hockey stick from the University of North Dakota Men's Hockey Team.

The Chicago politician promised the crowd that he would hang it in his office, but he wouldn't "try to wield it" since his attempt to swing at a puck was as poor as his ability to bowl a strike. But a lack of ability in Western gamesmanship hasn't stopped Obama from trying to fit in.

Before stopping at M&M Diner in Butte yesterday, Obama swung by his hotel to change out of his suit and into more casual garb, wearing a gray Columbia fleece and a casual button-down shirt sans the tie. When he got to the state's Mansfield-Metcalf dinner tonight, the suit was back on, but Obama was boasting of his desire to drink a beer.

"I spent a little time in the M&M. I wanted to have a beer, but my staff wouldn't let me. They said you have to go talk we don't want you slurring your words," he told the crowd.

His emphasis on appealing to Western voters appeared to be more than just cosmetic, however. In his speech in Butte, Obama emphasized a message of personal resilience, declaring that people in the West's desire for good government had nothing to do with getting a handout. He also spoke about Native American affairs, promising that his administration would place a higher priority on their concerns than past administrations. Montana is home to 10 Native American tribes.

The trip underscored the senator's support in Western states, and he played up the idea that despite being poor in delegates, states like Montana may be rich in potential Democratic support.

Last night, he praised Democratic governor, Brian Schweitzer, for "showing us the way Democrats can win in the West."

In the primary process, Obama's has been the favored candidate in western states, winning North Dakota, Idaho, Colorado, and Wyoming handily. He's also currently favored in Montana's June 3 primary. He's been endorsed by the entire North Dakota congressional delegation and just last week he earned the endorsement of Wyoming's governor, Dave Freudenthal, and former Sen. John Melcher of Montana. At his rally in Missoula Saturday morning, he even earned the endorsement of the city's mayor.

Obama in cowboy boots and and a hat.........He looked foolish trying to bowl. That's what you get when you try to come down and act like the little people.

I'd like to talk about OBama's friends and lies...

Obama's friend and partner Rezco and the contributions

Obama's racist black church who loves Farrakhan

Obama's Pastor Wright who traveled with Farrakhan to Lybia and met with terrorist leader Khadaffi (sp?)

Obama's Pastor who says, God dam_ America. And America got it what it deserved on 9-11. And America gave the aids virus to all the black people.

Obama's friend and supporter Farrakhan who hates jews, whites, and Italians...just anyone who isn't black.

Obama's friend terrorist William Ayers.

Obam's snarly wife who is ashamed to be American, and thinks we're mean.

Telling Canada that "wink wink" it just political talk. Then lying to the American people about it.

I don't know about you people but Obama scares me.

AT least Sen. Clinton loves America and is proud to be an American.
What a phoney. Obama fly-fishing...what's next, roping steer? Go back to Chicago, or Hawaii, or Indonesia or whaever you are from Barry.
Montana is not the Undiscovered Country for Democrats. It is it the home of former Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield. It would be a mistake for Republicans and pundits to put a Red label on it, as it has many of the demographic characteristics of a Purple state.
Yes, he certainly makes the effort to empathise with his audience.  I am curious to see how he empathises with his audience in Hawaii.
Everyone seems to forget about Hawaii.  Obama has deep roots in Hawaii, the state that has schools (King Kamehameha Schools) that require that you have at leaste 25% Hawaiian blood to attend.  What will this do for his no segregation speech?
I spent 14 years there and, yes, the Hawaiians want it segregated.  I had a difficult time funding my college education in HI, because all of the grants were for Hawaiians or African-Americans.  I can only hope Obama can empathise with the average white American, such as myself.
Obama is a man for all Americans. His platform is not one of supporting some folks over others. He seems to sincerely have concern for all of us.

Pulling for Obama '08
Do we have any update on the state conventions that went on friday and saturday? were there any delegate shifts?
Maybe we will all get lucky and Obama would take up fly fishing, down and few beers and be content to learn something useful.  Obama as president is scary and I would be scared to death, if I thought he had a chance.  He doesn't.  The 527's are coming.
Sounds like an Obama win in Montana to me.  He should also win South Dakota with the endorsements of Sen. Tim Johnson and former Sen. Tom Daschle.
Down-to-earth, for the people, by the people.  Someone you can have a good rapport with.  Old school jacket and tie no more.

OBAMA 08
Senator Obama's message resonates like crazy with me -- a native of Colorado.  As my father (a Kansas native) puts it, it is like Senator Obama "is calling me to a barn raising for the sake of the Country."  As Senator Obama once said "I am not asking you just to believe in my ability to change Washington, I am asking you to believe in yours."  I have been waiting for years for someone to tell me what I can do to help my Country other than putting a flag bumper sticker on my car or just a request that I "go shopping."  Thank goodness for Senator Obama and his offer to all of us, the American people, to reinvolve ourselves in our political process both now and after the election and always hold him accountable.

Yes we can!  Obama '08.
Obama will be a President for the whole country.

Take the high road--vote Obama
Hillary distorts the historical record with her lies. She condemns Obama for his eloquence--"Just words." But Bill's speeches have given the Clinton Dynasty over 50 million dollars, many of those millions from fat cat corporations whose lobbyists give Hillary's campaign megabucks in exchange for her ear. Hillary's books make her multimillions--just words? Bill is paid multimillions for "advice" to companies with shady business practices that the Feds are investigating. The Clintons' millions for "charity" go to the Clinton Family Foundation, an obvious tax-dodge that also allows them to use some of that to influence superdelegates. Their tax returns show us a model of one hand greasing the other. Hillary can lie about identifying with blue-collar women, but she pays her housecleaners over $40,000 each year, more than blue-collar women earn a year. The Clintons made 109 million dollars in seven years. And she has the audacity to ask blue-collar women to send their few hard-earned dollars to her campaign. The audacity of being shame-less!
The 1984 trip Wright was referring to was when he traveled to Libya and Syria on a peace mission along with an ecumenical body of ministers. Chaired by Rev. M. William Howard and led on the ground by Rev. Jesse Jackson who brought about a dozen other ministers including Minister Louis Farrakhan, the trip resulted in the freeing of United States Navy pilot Lt. Robert Goodman, who was captured after his fighter jet had been shot down over Lebanon.

At a January 4, 1984 White House ceremony welcoming Lt. Goodman home, U.S. President Ronald Reagan stated, "Reverend Jackson's mission was a personal mission of mercy, and he has earned our gratitude and our admiration."
Is the not reporting of this the good o boy white news thing.
well thats good he did not drink the beer because he words are slured enough without it. he says everything but stright answers in plan english his plain what he is going to do for our econmy now not 10 yrs from now i want to no if i will still  have a job and be able to buy gas to get to it next yr not 10 yrs from now

Compare these perfectly ad hoc performances by Obama with the combativeness of the Clinton campaign. HRC and the fat-bottom gang just do not understand the importance of the likeability factor.
I just want to point out that Obama talks about Indian affairs often - not just when he is in Montana.
Go Barack, go!  I'd like to see his speech at the Mansfield-Metcalf dinner.
slick barry at it again.

this guy is unelectable in the G.E.
Such a fake  he stoops to anyone in front of him.
Very arrogant over nothing.
Clinton or McCain for 08
I think Montana is a smart state. You know a no nonsense state who sees clearly is just what Obama needs. Enough of the old party politics of the Clinton's. I am so tired of them. Just to think that want back in makes me ill. Has anyone ever wondered why they want back in. Have we forgotten all the taxpayer money spent to oust them when Bill was in before. Have we forgotten Travelgate,Vince Foster, the questionable death of Ron Brown and the others in the plane? Have we forgotten about the FBI men covering the White House who did not have the stomach for the lack of respect the Clinton's had for the dignity of the White House? Have we forgotten the the FBI agents quit after two years and got out of public service after 20 years? Have we forgotten about Flowers,Broadbeat,Willey, and Paula Jones? I will vote for Hillary when she returns the furniture she stold from the White House.
I like Obama.  He is trying his best to be part of everyone.  It's hard work.
Hey Barry.  Let me get this straight.  First bar hopping, then bowling, then hockey and now fly fishing.  You are definitely one of the boys now.  What's next - getting caught reading Playboy?  Who IS this guy?
Wow - To read the ignorance of the 1st John Doe, I can see why he doesn't have the heart or the satchel to put his real name down.  Please tell me what sort of a world would you care to live in?  Are you happy with the way America is currently?  Soldiers facing homelessness when they come home?  A VA system that is broken?  Michelle Obama was right, there is a reason to feel proud again.  George W. did the impossible and has decimated this country to when I travel outside of the US, I have to explain that yes, I can't stand our corrupt, idiot president and his crooked government either.  It is time we instill pride back into our country and to being an American citizen.  If your narrow mindedness and being a racist prevents you from doing so, then please sir, join the US Military and volunteer for Iraq while Bush is still in office and drop me a line from Baghdad and let me know what you think.  Once your back, let me know how the Bush health care system is taking care of you.
Actually, in norwegian "uffta", or "Uff da" which its the correct spelling, means 'uh oh' or 'oh dear', as if something surprisingly bad just happend. But creds for trying though.
To those who seem to hate Obama:  I challenge you to read Obama's book, "Faith From My Fathers". Also, look at Rev. Wright in context: his ministry, his complete sermons, and military service. Finally, look at the speech Dr. Martin Luther King was going to make the day after his death - it was discussed yesterday on Meet the Press.  Context makes all the difference! jc oh
another eight years of republican politics...no middle class relief...no relief from gas gouging prices... thanks progressive dems that vote in the primaries... you have picked the two weakest candidates in thirty years. not since dukakis have we seen such a disaster in the making and main street dems are helpless as we are held hostage to this wing of the party. obama cannot win, while clinton would stand a better chance, but not much of one.

edwards, biden, or dodd would have rolled to victory and transformed this nation,,, but oh well.....
I am so sick of hearing his same old tired speeches all the time.  Does he have any new material at all?  Is that how he will run the white house - same old tired politics?  I look back at how much better off this country was during the Clinton Administration, despite all the "old bones in their closet".  "Old bones" don't scare me - Barack Obama does.  Some people, especially the younger generation say he "inspires" them.  Well - Hitler "inspired" the German people, Castro "inspired" the Cuban people, and Chavez "inspired" the people of Venzuela.  Obama does not "inspire" me - he "scares" me..
All the Clintonites can bring up are
dead-in-the-water  issues like Rev. Wright, and Farrakhan, which both have been denounced by Sen. Obama. I'm also sure that authorities have gone over the Rezko situation with a fine toothed comb, and have yet to find any incriminating evidence against Sen. Obama.  I could bring up all the scandalous, corruptive situations, and the MANY LIES that your candidate is involved in but I won't because the American people are aware that she is ethically deficient, and corrupt which is why Sen. Obama is LEADING in this nomination. A man with integrity, and solutions to the problems that face America is Sen. Barack Obama.
A lot of the people posting about Obama DO sound mean.   I heard a caller on CSPAN a while ago say, "I'm a racist, but I"m gonna vote for Obama!"

I think Obama/Kerry will win every state, maybe even Arizona.
I'm glad to see Racism is alive and well and showcased on this board with the ignorance that comes with it. I think the posters know who they are. It is interesting to me that a person who only talks of inclusiveness and positivity can be so hated by so many. Every News Agency out there has checked his record and talked to his friends. He doesn't have any negative views about other races nor does his record at the state or federal level show any bias. Not only is he being held guilty by association, but now he is guilty by association of association. He has never even met Farrakhan. It is interesting when White preachers question or criticize the government in the same way Wright did it's ok, but when a Black preacher does it all hell is breaking lose and he hates his country. Do yourselves a favor look up what Pat Robertson, Hagee,  Parsley and many others. The double standard is amazing to me. You can be for your Candidate without hating or trying to denigrate their opponent.
You misspelled "uff da" - but I'm glad you mentioned that.  When he said that, I busted out laughing.  As a born and raised North Dakotan, that was a great add in to his stump speech!

Obama '08
BTW the Clinton campaign was caught in anothe lie regarding a hospital over the weekend.  The hospital called them out on that.  She has been using the story to boost her healthcare proposal, turns out that the story was false.
