Penn steps down as top Clinton strategist

Posted: Sunday, April 06, 2008 7:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and John Boxley
Mark Penn, who recently met with the Colombian government regarding a trade deal that Hillary Clinton opposes, has resigned his post as the Clinton campaign's chief strategist.

"After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton campaign," campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement. "Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign."

Williams added, "Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign's strategic message team going forward."

Per sources in the campaign, Hillary Clinton was disappointed with Penn's meeting with the Colombian government. She is a big opponent of the trade pact. Penn knew that he had made error in judgment and realized over the weekend that he would need to step down as chief strategist.

Clinton agreed.

He will continue providing polling and campaign advice? So what's changed? Sounds like only Penn's title has changed, not his role in Hillary's campaign.

Please tell me that we are smart enough to understand the non-distinction Hillary is making. After she was so hard on Obama for a NAFTA story that turned out to be untrue, Hillary should hold herself to a higher standard.
Wow.  So, he's stepped down, but uh, he's going to keep working for us doing the same things he was doing before?

I wonder what that smokescreen's SPF is?  The sad part is, some Democrat voters will actually fall for it.
If you can't see the comparison between how Hillary has chosen her people in this campaign to what would happen in her Cabinet, then by all means vote for her, but what I see is a person -Hillary- who surrounds herself with people who continually fight amongst themselves, are unable to agree on a strategy, cannot come together to put forward her message, can't even agree on what the message is,  and each thinks they're the smartest and most important person on the planet.  Hillary keeps them around because they are 'loyal' to her, but it would seem to me that her definition of 'loyal' must just be that she's known them a long time - not that she really 'knows' them at all.  That kind of judgment in choosing a cabinet to aid her in her agenda for our country will create the same kind of chaos only on a much larger scale as we have all seen in her campaign.  Why would anyone knowingly vote for chaos?  I don't have any problem with Hillary's proposed plans and policies, but I have zero confidence in her ability to put together a team to execute them.
This bum "resigns" but is still on their payroll??

This is the guy who drove an inevitable campaign into the ditch and they are still keeping him around.
Hillary's acting more and more like Bush everyday.
More failed judgement from the Clinton's. Is this what we want in the White House???
so, the columbian government has either more guts or higher standards of behavior then the clinton campaign and chooses to completely cut ties with Penn - nice.
what penn did he did on his own?  Clinton should havw gotten red of him month ago, maybe he campaign would have done better. You put your faith in certain people and some times those are the ones who hurt you the most.  Read that sentence several time, Obama generation people, maybe it will sink in.  Obama has shown lack of good judgement and at time just plain lied to the American people.   I won't both with a list, you should know it by now.
Clinton smoke screen...they can't get "rid" of him because he has too much dirt on them plus they still owe him almost 3 million...what to do?  Oh yeah call a press conference and demote him.  The only people that will satisfy is the Clinton hard-liners who will buy anything from her.  Sad but predictable.
Intense in-fighting in her own staff, finances a mess, lies, coverups, concealments, distortions, dirty politics, entire states dismissed as "not-important", miscalculations, "misspoken" . . . this is the worst-run campaign in a long, long time.

And all a small preview of what a Clinton administration would look like.
Y'all gotta be kidding me. Are there really people in the world who think that Mark Penn, who was bound to be Hillary's Josh Lyman, didn't have at least some kind of blessing from Maggie Williams or Hillary herself? C'mon -- Hillary is full of doublespeak and has spoken in great favor of free-trade agreements like NAFTA before. Let's not mince words: Hillary Clinton is a liar.
New American Research Group Poll in Pennsylvania:

Clinton - 45%
Obama - 45%
I wonder how much Clinton still owes Penn.
"Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign."

That's taking a stand Hill.
Sincehe is gone will HC start telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but truth..... I mean who cares if he leaves lets talk about this woman's values, lying about the death of a pregnant woman........ that's low, even for a Clinton.
I have to say that this should have occured to someone early on that Penn has a business with multiple clients.  Given the campaign, he should have stepped away from all other clients to focus on the campaign and had his business run by a partner or someone else in the firm.  Given his mouth, I think he should have been fired after the first mistake.

Given that Penn said that it was "a mistake" to meet with Colombia.  He should have phrased it as something closer to: It was a disservice to all of my clients to work this closely for them when they have competing interests.
Looks like Penn's cocaine comment about Obama has come back to haunt him in an ironic sort of way.  I haven't really heard any of the Obama folks jumping all over this.  Could you imagine if it were an Obama staffer who had met with the Columbians?  Penn would be out there talking about Columbians and cocaine and Obama's use of cocaine in some convoluted way.
Although Clinton thinks Americans are stupid, we all read the line that Penn will STILL be advising the campaign. Good. I hope he continues to give her such good advice like, "Run on experience" and "talk about jobs" (before I outsource them to Columbia). He's been great for her, so far, don't you think? Come on PA voters......wake up and vote for Obama on the 22nd.
