McCain: The Jimmy McCain story

Posted: Monday, April 07, 2008 9:12 AM by Mark Murray

The Sunday New York Times front-paged a piece about McCain’s youngest son, Jimmy, who has served in Iraq. “Mr. McCain, now the presumptive Republican nominee, has staked his candidacy on the promise that American troops can bring stability to Iraq. What he almost never says is that one of them is his own son, who spent seven months patrolling Anbar Province and learned of his father’s New Hampshire victory in January while he was digging a stuck military vehicle out of the mud.”

The Wall Street Journal reports on McCain's slamming of executive pay and notes he's showing a "populist streak." "McCain's rhetoric is notable because it comes from a self-described conservative Republican and follows comments he made nearly two weeks ago emphasizing that some problems were caused by irresponsible borrowers who bought homes they couldn't afford, betting that rising prices would save them."

The Washington Times' Dinan wraps up McCain's bio tour. "On his ‘Service to America’ tour, Mr. McCain repeatedly touted his military service and bipartisan credentials and talked about the heroes who shaped his personal life and politics. But it could just as easily have been called the ‘imperfect public servant’ tour — words he used to describe himself to students at his former high school on day two of the tour — as he found himself apologizing for not always living up to what those heroes expected.”

NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy notes that McCain spoke to reporters on his plane from Phoenix to Kansas City yesterday afternoon, addressing Petraeus’ upcoming appearance before Congress and Obama’s statement regarding liberal radio host Schulz’s “warmonger” comment. “I have not talked to General Petraeus in -- prior to his statements before the committees, before the Congress. But I think you’re going to hear more about the Iranian influence, the arms they’ve provided, the money, the training, particularly the extent of their influence in southern Iraq. It’s pretty extensive and I think he’s going to be talking about that. I say that because of the information that I’ve got.”

Also: “I look forward to hearing his assessment of the situation, particularly in light of recent events in Basra, Maliki’s dispatch of the army down there, and the cease fire and the degree of Iranian involvement, particularly in southern Iraq as well as the rest of the nation. So I think it’s important, this is a very appropriate time to hear from Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker.”

On Obama’s response to Schultz’s comment: “I think it’s -- I think it’s satisfactory, the statement by his campaign, and I hope we can keep these things to a minimum. I know that as we talked earlier many times, it’s a free country. Everybody has the right to say what they want to say as long as it’s not -- and a lot of the rhetoric gets heated in American politics, but Americans want a respectful campaign.”

On whether Obama is running a respectful campaign: “I’ve been very disappointed in the 100-year-war statement, because he knows that that’s not the case. He knows that the context of the statement that I made, and it’s contradictory to his statements about the kind of campaign he would run. I’ve been disappointed in that – and so, but we’ve got a long way to go.”

The DNC hits McCain on the economy.

The age issue… “Team McCain is quietly starting to get serious about confronting the age issue -- it plans to convene an unusual meeting of the senator's doctors next month to answer questions about his health, the Daily News has learned. At the same time, the Republican presidential hopeful acknowledged last week that some voters may want extra insurance when it comes to electing a septuagenarian -- most notably with his choice for vice president.”

Sounds like he is trying to drum up a war with Iran. The surge is NOT working, with over 4000 Americans killed and 12 billion of our tax dollars a month being wasted, the only reason there has been any drop in violence is because the terrorist thug Al Sadr called off his cowardly butchers, as he does any time he is backed into a corner. If there really is a "war on terror", why is this animal still alive?
While it is commendable that a warmongers son actually serves in a war it doesn't change the fact that mccains fellow republicans are not flocking down to the recruiters station nor do any of them want to pay for their war...

They want our kids and grandkids to die while they provide the cheerleading and bumper sticker slogans
The rise of Iranian influence was a direct and predictable consequence of taking out Saddam, at least for anyone who paid attention to the facts on the ground before '03. It's exactly why the more temperate elder Bush and the canny Bill Clinton correctly believed containment was the lesser of evils. It will be interesting to see whether McCain musters up the gumption to speak honestly about the enormous mistakes of the current administration and show that he knows the stark difference between "The Iraq War was a good idea" and "We broke it, we own it." If he really plans to run a principled campaign, there is no genuine alternative for him.

His happily sending his kid off to that hell-hole does not justify sending someone elses kid there too. If his kid dies over there he'll want to see 10,000 of yours meet the same fate before this mess is over.
I thnk Obama's right, it'll be all about Iran, in tandem with Mcwar's ginning the country up for his administrations's planned war against Iran.  he'l be giving what he and his master Bush hope is the next president amunition for his next war in the Middle East.I hope someone points that out during all this.
We were disapointed in your "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran", flippancy Senator. 'Warmonger'? No doubt about to my mind.

I retract my comment that McCain hid his sons from serving in Iraq. However, will they be subjected to mandatory tour after tour over there?

I take issue with the post that acknowledged 70% of Americans were for the war in Iraq, (when Bush first invaded), and then went on to make the argument that all Americans were for the war. 70% does not constitute the whole of anything. My husband, and I were not for this war, and marched along the streets of Pittsburgh in protest of it, with the other 30% of Americans who saw through Bush's lies; as did Senator Obama.

Pulling for Obama '08
Yeah that CEO of Bear Stearns going from being worth over a billion to only 61 million that quick can't be considered getting off easy. McCain needs to drop that BS because it makes him sound as bad as the multi millionaire democrats who encourage people to hate the rich. If I'm going to hate the rich I'm going to hate the rich bastards who encourage me to hate the rich.
Like Bush/Cheney a Blatant Opportunist - Will America ever account for all the Iraqi oil profits over the last 5 years?
Now that he's "wrapped up" his bio-tour, how 'bout we see some tax returns to complete the picture?
So much for your left wing comments. Hillary is a chronic lier, and Obama will never get elected with his anti-everybody who is not black baggage. Mind as well face it boys & girls your two picks are again the wrong people for the majority to fall for. Wait and see! I almost feel sorry for you.....NOT!!
Wars never go as planned, the Civil War was going to be
a 60 day war with all the blood shed cleaned up with 1 piece of cloth. The cleaner we try to make it the harder  it is to end.
That's great that Jimmy McCain is willing to serve in the armed forces but it has nothing whatsoever to do with whether we should stay in Iraq.
As a Hillary supporter, I respect McCain even more since his own son is doing combat missions in Iraq. I wonder what Romney's 5 sons are doing for their country?

Proud to be an American and its vast potential.

War to Hillary winning in November.
War to bringing the peace and prosperity of the 1990's back.

Hillary > McCain > Obama
What McFossil doesn't quite understand is that the American people don't want to be in Iraq even UNDER a peace-keeping mission for the next 100 years. And why on earth does he think there will EVER be peace in the middle east? They've fought for over 600 years; does he think HE can stop them from fighting each other? Enough. Send our troops home and let them continue to kill each other....at least our children  and grandchildren in the armed forces will be safe!
Remember THE WORLD TRADE CENTER.
Remember The World Trade Center.
The sad thing about the Democrats is that they want to hide their heads in the sand. Remember the world trade center.
The world trade center was destroyed by Suicide Bombers flying weapons of mass destruction. The chief promoter of suicide bombers beside osama be laden was non other than suddam hussien. Why can't you recognize that fact? Because you're ignorant? Remember the world trade center!!!
The sad thing about HB of McFalls, ME (other than obvious spelling and usage problems) is that he or she, like so many other people in the US, are so easily misled and so totally ignorant of facts, current events, world history, geography, and just about everything else except who is on American Idol or what the abysmal Ms. Spears is up to.  I am truly disappointed. Maine folk in the old days were pretty shrewd people. Apparently, the Marching Morons have taken over there as well.

The WTC and other 9/11 events were (if you buy the given story) accomplished by jihadists who were flying US owned and registered aircraft. (Which I suppose could be construed as "WMD" if misused - that, however, was not what they were designed as, HB.)

Most of the alleged highjackers were Saudis. One was from Egypt, and another from the UAE.  NONE were Iraqis.  None had any ties with Iraq or Saddam, a secular dictator who hated the Islamic fundies. (Saddam, BTW, was a US "asset"  for years - set up and maintained as a surrogate in the region to off-set first the Soviets and [later] Iran. I have a picture of him c. 1983 shaking hands with Rummy, then Reagan's Special Envoy. Rummy presented him with a gift of golden spurs from Reagan, who had just taken him off the State Dept. list of state sponsors of terrorism.)

We also provided him with intel, funding, and precursors of chemical and biological weapons used on the Iranians and later the Kurds and Shiites.

HB, you need to go back to school, quit listening to Faux "News" and "Thrush Limburger" and find out what is really going on in the world.

"Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it"

Just for the record, I don't like the Repugnicans OR the Dimocrites (sp. intentional).  They all feed from the same trough.
