Penn's ouster

Posted: Monday, April 07, 2008 9:20 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: ,

The Washington Post front-pages, Mark J. Penn quit Sunday as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief strategist, the second shake-up in her campaign's top ranks since the onetime front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination began trailing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Penn had been a polarizing figure within the Clinton campaign for months because of his personality as well as his strategic vision, but his departure came as a result of another continuing controversy -- the conflicts of interest that resulted from his representing major clients as president of Burson-Marsteller, the giant public relations firm, while working for Clinton.”

The Boston Globe on Penn’s meeting with the Colombian government and then campaign departure. "[T]he meeting rankled labor union activists, who questioned whether the meeting undermined Clinton's pro-labor message at a time when she must hold on to the working-class vote."

Campaign manager Maggie Williams released this statement early yesterday evening: “After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign. Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign's strategic message team going forward.”

The New York Times: “For months, many have wondered why Mrs. Clinton had protected the gruff, rumpled strategist. Many rivals within the campaign held Mr. Penn responsible for the flawed electoral strategy that is considered partly to blame for Mrs. Clinton’s difficult political position, trailing Mr. Obama by more than a hundred delegates and facing a very narrow path to winning the Democratic nomination. Mr. Penn advocated the plan to focus on a limited number of big state primaries, ignoring many smaller states and caucuses, where Mr. Obama built what appears to be an impregnable lead in pledged delegates.”

Also, “Mr. Penn also early on resisted efforts to humanize Mrs. Clinton, insisting that her personality was not a detriment and that voters would be drawn to her experience and presumed competence. He repeatedly pointed to polling data to support his position, leading to battles with other aides who later said it was the glimpses of vulnerability and humanity seen after her loss in Iowa that enabled her to rebound.”

Boarding plane in Albuquerque, Clinton did not respond to reporters’ questions on Mark Penn, NBC’s John Boxley report. Getting out of car she looked at the reporters on tarmac, smiled, and cuffed her hand around her ear -- unable to hear us, like Ronald Reagan used to do when he didn't want to answer questions.

Walking up the stairs, she stopped and said, "Look at you all. It’s so nice out here.” She then boarded the plane.

The Los Angeles Times doesn't call the move a firing -- but rather a demotion. In fact, it says Penn may not be going anywhere, "It is unclear whether Penn's demotion will satisfy his detractors or stabilize the campaign in the crucial final months of the primary season. ‘When you add to it the already contentious relationship he had with so many internally in the campaign and externally, he really should have been fired,’ one Clinton aide said Sunday, speaking on the condition of anonymity while discussing internal campaign dynamics. Though he will no longer have the grand title of chief strategist, he will continue to ‘wield power,’ the aide said.

Teamsters president James Hoffa said the demotion isn't good enough. “‘Demotion doesn't answer General President Hoffa's concerns. Mark Penn is still on her payroll and Burson-Marsteller's payroll,’ a spokeswoman for Mr. Hoffa, Leigh Strope, said. ‘Title demotion doesn't indicate loss of influence.’” The Teamsters have endorsed Obama.

The New York Daily News’ DeFrank writes, “Mark Penn was the poster child for a campaign already on the shoals, so his belated ouster won't be enough to right Hillary Clinton's prospects. But as the Democratic contest reaches a climax, at least morale inside the Clinton bunker will soar.”

The New York Post puts Penn’s ouster on its cover: “Top man out in Hill shakeup.” Penn’s “apology both offended the Colombians, who fired his firm, and failed to satisfy several union officials, who demanded that he step down.”

HEY HEY-EY!
GOODBYE!
Ah yes, the Clinton trademark, double dealing.  In fact, Penn is still part of the campaign, he has not been fired.  If he still works for Senator Clinton, which he clearly does, he offers the same influence as before.

When will the Clinton supporters realize that her quest for the Presidency has nothing to do with their needs, but her own self-aggrandizement?

As to the Clinton charitable donations, it is being funded to their own family "charity".  Time to find out how the funds are being distributed. When will the journalists get a list of charities that received the Clinton largess?

It also looks like Senator Clinton is taking a page out of Chelsea's book.  Childishly refuse to answer the questions that displease you.
Penn's not gone folks, just out of the spotlight. Got credibility?
Obama '08
Yes WE Can
Does anyone have any doubt that a H.Clinton Administration would be marked by CHAOS, not to mention inept appointments, cronyism, mismanagement, lies, deceit, and never admitting a mistake?

Haven't we had enough of that under Dubya?

Also - how can a thinking person accept that there wasn't some connection between Clinton and the Columbian trade deal?  The Columbians themselves stated they didn't know if Penn was representing the Clintons or not.

C'mon America, use your heads. Vote NO for this debacle in the making.

MARK PENN IS NOT THE ONLY TOP ADVISOR OF THE CLINTON CAMP WHO HAS CONFLICT OF INTEREST WITH HILLARYS TALKING POINTS. REPRESENTING THE DRUG CO,INURANCE CO,CREDIT CARD CO,COUNTRYWIDE,SAUDIA OIL,BLACKWATER, TAINTED TOY MAKERS IN CHINA ARE THE MANY DAY JOBS OF THE TOP CLINTON CAMPAIGN ADVISORS.
First read is right, If Karl Rove was doing this, he would have been grilled over the fires.

Once again, The Clinton's show they care nothing for ordinary Americans, just themselves.  More questions to ask Chelsea today!

HIllary Clinton
A Liar for all seasons

You know that you're up to your neck in trouble when BOTH of your "bosses" fire you from two separate jobs.  Although with the money that the Clintons have been paying him - and no doubt the other clients (like Colombia), Mark Penn  probably isn't too worried about it.

Oh, and also, he's still going to be doing some work for the Clinton campaign, just not as a "chief strategist".

Intense in-fighting in her own staff, finances a mess, lies, coverups, concealments, distortions, dirty politics, entire states dismissed as "not-important", miscalculations, "misspoken" . . . this is the worst-run campaign in a long, long time.

And all a small preview of what a Clinton administration would look like.
Penn u r not a good strategist, we should have competed every where.y only in big states.she shuld have been more human.wolfson is brilliant will make her win
What AMAZES me most about this is PA's new ISN'T covering this story. They are so in the Clinton until I actually feel sorry for them as well as OH, MI and possibly IN. Also I watched a lil of morning Joe and it clear...VERY CLEAR that he's in the Clinton bag along with his two suckup side kicks...I just can't watch the show anymore.  Nonetheless, what good will this do if the good ole' folks of PA refuse to get it the attention it needs.

I think Hillary new all about Penn's mission to Columbia.  His gong to Columbia wasnt just decided the day before he went.  Hillary felt that she would wrap up the nomination by Feruary and Penn could have gone to Columbia without a hitch.  If she were to win the Presidency she would have signed the trade agreement just like her husband signed NAFTA which she supported.

This is the Clintons type of politics, I dont believe they care about the middle class in the USA.
It's all smoke and mirrors! Penn isn't gone. He is STILL going to have influence and give advise to Hillary's campaign. He "stepped down" so he could continue to lobby and outsource American jobs to foreign countries. Hillary is counting on the American peoples "stupidity" and give her another free ride on this one. When is enough enough? How can anyone still support this woman? Send her a message PA voters; American needs to go in a NEW direction. Obama '08.

This is a big fat who cares. I'm not voting for Mark Penn.
Which is worse Penn getting paid to lobbby for the Colombians for over a year or Clinton saying she didn't know Penn was getting paid.

Enlighting articles about Clinton, Penn and Nafta below.

Wow it was a barage of bad new for the Clintons this weekend. so many in fact to find the biggest story was nearly impossible. Let us recap as best we can.1)The HillBilly team has Made over 110000000 dollars in 10yrs time .America we feel your pain.2)Mark Penn doing more back dealings for the Columbian Government for another NAFTA like bill. But the Clinton campaign would not support such a bill.(wink , wink )3) This one is hard to blame HillBilly for until you think of how she ran with it.The Ohio girl refused service at a hospital because she could not afford a $100 fee.Why did it not sound right from the first time it was told, why did someone not check the facts? I still wish somebody would check the facts on the anecdote Bill told in Texas about Hillary getting someone recued from New Orleans During Hurricane Katrina. It is just a matter of credibilty. The Clintons Have lost all that they ever had .
Him trying to double deal...bad enough.  Glad he finally got caught.  In terms of the race for the nomination, I believe this question is most relevant.  Why did Hillary keep him, knowing that.  He wasn't even great for her campaign.  He was not competent as a strategists.  Her campaign has made misstep after misstep after misstep.

Is this the Carville issue, you remain loyal no matter what (or you are a Judas)?  If so, I can't say enough how much I DO NOT WANT THIS in the White House.

In the clear light of day...

It is a disservice for the Media to claim that Mark Penn has been FIRED or has stepped down or that he will not be affiliated with the campaign. This is contradicted in Maggie Williams' statement which says "After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will CONTINUE to PROVIDE polling and advice to the campaign. " From the following statement it is accurate for the Media to say he has been DEMOTED! Although many in the Media are trying to insinuate that he has been fired or has stepped down, this is a FABRICATION and Media has a right to inform Truth and not falsifications.

'"The president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, James Hoffa, said through an aide tonight that the change is of little significance, since Mr. Penn will continue to advise and poll for Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid. "Demotion doesn't answer General President Hoffa's concerns. Mark Penn is still on her payroll and Burson-Marsteller's payroll," a spokeswoman for Mr. Hoffa, Leigh Strope, said. "Title demotion doesn't indicate loss of influence."' "In a statement on Friday, Mr. Hoffa called for Mr. Penn's ouster. "Someone like Mark Penn should not be dictating strategy, and possibly legislation, for a Democratic candidate for president," the Teamster leader said."

Anyone with any Political smarts and savvy, should know that the Clintons are not REALLY getting rid of Penn and that this is just a smoke screen -- he is far too valuable to them and knows WAY too much for them to push him under the bus. He will still be pulling the strings behind that Wizard of Oz Curtin, as they say, polling and advising! This is just more double talk, double speak, misstate, misspeak and misspoke moment. Mark Penn should step down for Real!

It is hard to believe that Hillary was not aware of Mark Penn's involvement as his role was to push the Columbia Trade Bill through Congress, surely Hillary has some knowledge of what her direct associates are doing in Congress. Hillary's campaign has acknowledged that Penn will continue to be a 'consultant' to the campaign.  This duplicity is another example of Hillary's dishonesty and lack of integrity, I suspect she thought the news media would give her a 'pass' on this and not report it.
Penn was a fool.  It just shows Hillary's lack of judgement in taking him on and keeping him on as long as she did.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
How can she say she has good judgement when her right hand man is a double dipping sleeze ball? I guess we know who'd answer the phone if Columbia called at 3:00am.
Well she might be a "fighter", she may be tough, but she consistantly makes poor choices...kinda critical for a President!
What kind of thinking went into her decision to keep him?  Loyalty?  What will she do with loyal people around her in Washington?  We have experienced that for 7 years with Bush.
Her campaign is the the red, even after her 5 million dollar loan she gave to herself.  Who will loan the American people money when she makes blundering economic decisions in Washington?
Not only does her credibility come into question, but her ability, when she can't lead a fiscally and policy responsible campaign.
Too many bad choices and decisions made by Clinton, to lead me to believe she could effectively lead as President of the United States.
C'mon! nobody is going to find out if Colombia and other pro free-trade countries have given money to the Hillary campaign? guys? guys!? anyone...!?

Remember when Burson-Marsteller was lobbying against the Clinton's in '93? how times change...
It's funny how double dealing will ALWAYS come back to bite you. But, I have come to expect nothing less from the Clinton campaign. Their say anything, do anything stance is exactly what will lose this election for them and I couldn't be happier.

Now if Hillary would just fire herself!
As a Ex-Hillary supporter it saddens me that she still believes she can win. I hate watching her ruin her image and career that she worked so hard to build.
Hillary, I still care about you, I just can NOT vote for you. Girlfriend, take a much deserved vacation, get out of the spotlight and save your senate seat. I can not stand to hear another mis-statement or mis-doing.
Only a polarizing person like him and Hillary could have kept him in his job position. He is too dumb to have been in the campaign and should have left LONG time ago. But Hillary chose inaction because she, like him, is a polarizing and lying figure.
Billery shows her experiance by having hired a hack like Penn to help her lie and grab  power now she lies about firing him. Lets have a fun week figuring out who is paying for the nights stay in the white house bedroom or a pardon this time around.

It should be fair... One time in the white house to steal lie and plunder per family. Billery has had theirs. Go back to NY they deserve you after voting you carpet bag saggy butt into office, they should be stuck with her not us.
"the second shake-up in her campaign's top ranks since the onetime front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination began trailing Sen. Barack Obama"

Well it's the THIRD major shake-up in her campaign's top ranks since the primary began.  Remember Bill Shaheen?  Obama hasn't had to can even ONE staffer with anything like that kind of rank.  How long can she keep re-arranging the deck chairs before the public realizes she's sinking?
THANK YOU for reporting the WHOLE story! Every other news outlet is reporting that Penn has been ousted from his position. But they are failing to mention that he is, in fact, still on the Clinton payroll! I like how it was such an outrage that one of Obama's advisers called Clinton a monster and they were screaming from the rooftops that Obama needed to control the people in his campaign. Well he did just that - he was decisive and quick to act and showed, as he has on numerous occassions during this campaign, that HE runs his campaign. Clinton should take note and stop practice the same kind of cronyism that GWB and co. engage in. If loyalty to her "friends" comes before what is right in her campaign , what could we expect from her in the White House?
Yeah, it sounds like he just had his title removed but will still be very involved, not just doing polling but providing "advice." He just won't be the public face but will still be behind the scenes. Don't be fooled, folks!

Meanwhile, how is the Clinton campaign doing on paying its delinquent bills to Penn's firm as well as to many small businesses? How much cash does she have on hand? Inquiring minds want to know!
I love how Hillary demoted him AND the Colombians fired his company!  Actually, for Obama fans, this is the best of both worlds: public humiliation for the Hil campaign, and he actually gets to stay there & continue p-ing everybody off & causing more internal strife & chaos.  Lovely.
This should have been done MONTHS ago and probably even before the Iowa loss and New Hampshire miracle.  Penn was a distraction to those inside and outside the campaign from day one and turned a lot of people, unions, and donors off not to mention the bad media coverage he brought the campaign on his statements and strategy.
This should become a major talking point for Obama: a Hillary administration would start right out of the gate with a fundamentally damaged relationship with one of our major allies in South America.  Ready on Day One!
I can't believe she was stupid enough to keep him on the payroll knowing of his dealings. Doubt that this caught her by surprise
The big message to be gleaned from the latest revelation about Mark Penn is "You are your campaign".

From Patty Solis Doyle being jettisoned early in the campaign to the latest redeployment of Mark Penn.  I say redeployment because unlike Ms. Doyle, Penn still is on the HRC payroll.

Why does she have to go through all these machinations to give the perception of distancing herself from Mr. Penn?  Her chief strategist committed the same sin HRC was just found guilty of, i.e. saying one thing while being caught doing another.

The mess that is HRC's campaign is a reflection of the Cybil like character that is HRC.  After finding her voice in New Hampshire, presumably because that particular voice happened to work for a little while, she has since gone through more voices than Rich Little. Unfortunately for HRC, it appears most people will remember her voice as being more akin to Linda Blair's from The Exorcist.

Exorcism, now theres an idea HRC might be able to use.  She could come back as a good and pure politician and blame everything on the Devil.
Penn will still be paid by the camp. His company will be handling the polls.

I wish some one woul flush out that truth on the Billary klan.
Talk about hypocrisy....During the Ohio primary, Hillary and her camp lied about Obama and NAFTA and it was on every cable news station in America.  Her double talking, lying, and hypocritical camp should ALL be fired.  And to think that she and Ed Rendell believes that she is better suited to fight against John McCain!!  You have gotta be kidding?  When Karl Rove and the right wing neocons get through emptying she and Bill"s basket full of b.s.  every DEMOCRAT would end up running for cover.  Talk about HYPOCRISY!!!
I am curious as to when we will see information on Clinton and Peter Paul and also when do we learn about Maggie Williams from Hillary's campaign and her dealings with Sub prime lending

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign manager, Maggie Williams, earned about $200,000 on the board of a Long Island subprime lender that charged prepayment penalties — a practice that Clinton, a critic of the subprime industry, now seeks to eliminate.
Williams, who took over the reins of Clinton’s campaign in early February, served as a director on the board of the Woodbury, N.Y.-based Delta Financial Corp. from April 2000 until the firm declared bankruptcy in December, according to Securities and Exchange Commission records
If Hillary kept this human piece of garbage in her campaign this long how could we ever trust her to not bring in more trash into her administration if she got elected?  Penn is a big loser and fool that should never have been hired in the first place.  When it comes to Judgment Hillary leaves a lot to be desired.

Go Obama!
Just wait until the details of the 20 mil $$ donated in March come out!! Some may have come as transfers to herself from her Senate $$.  That's a viable and well run campaign alright.

Busted.  Broke. Still in debt to Penn. Ring Ring Ring
Robin you are truly ignorant.."This is a big fat who cares. I'm not voting for Mark Penn"

These are the type of people that would be apart of her administration you moron.. so Mark Penn comes with the package.  Hillary is extremely contradictory.. Penn had a tremendous amount of influence over that position..  All the other advisers didn't get along with him.. Hello!!!! And Hillary didn't have the judgement to know that this guy is a cancer.  So what that should say to you is that Hillary is into that ole don't ask don't tell.. that is why she isn't even talking to the media.. How childish.. At least Obama faced his obstacle head on and didn't dodge the media..

I guess all of the Hillary supporters out there are still in denial.. You all are like the people at the bottom of the mountain as the avalanche is moving your way and you just stand there watching it happen and don't realize that you are getting a snow job until your ignorant selves have been ran over..

Vote Obama 08
