First thoughts: The sword mightier...

*** Clinton's Sword Is Mightier Than Penn: As most everyone knows by now, Mark Penn is no longer the Clinton campaign’s chief strategist. The reason: The Wall Street Journal story from Friday, which reported that Penn -- in his role as chief executive of PR giant Burson Marsteller -- was discussing with the Colombian government a trade agreement that Clinton opposes. As we speculated when this story first surfaced, Penn was providing his critics inside the campaign an opportunity to push him out. It looks like Penn's final protectors, the Clintons, were convinced that this episode was the last straw. In some ways, it's remarkable that Penn lasted this long in the dual roles of chief strategist and CEO of a major worldwide PR firm. Imagine the press scrutiny had Karl Rove, for instance, attempted to keep two jobs like that during the Bush campaigns. Or if James Carville had tried this during the Clinton years. It was quite remarkable what Penn was trying to do.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on Clinton's top strategist stepping down, and Penn's dual roles.

*** A tough couple of weeks: Penn’s resignation as chief strategist -- his firm will still do polling for the campaign, apparently -- caps what has been a tough couple of weeks for the Clinton campaign. First came the Tuzla sniper stories. Next was the should-she-stay-or-should-she-go speculation. Then came the reports that Obama raised twice the amount Clinton did in March; that the Clintons made $109 million since Bill left the White House; and that an anecdote Hillary was telling on the campaign (about a pregnant woman who died after being denied health care) isn’t necessarily true. The possible good news from Penn’s ouster as chief strategist: Those other stories move to the backburner. There’s also a new North Carolina poll -- which shows Clinton trailing Obama there by nine points (with a lot of undecideds) -- that finds Clinton scored much lower on the issue of “trustworthiness” than either Obama or McCain. Toss in the Bosnia story and now that hospital story, and it appears she's made up zero ground on this issue, which dogged her husband and her in polling for some time.

*** Petraeus returns: The presidential campaign moves from the campaign trail to Capitol Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday, when Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker testify to the Senate and the House, respectively. Clinton, McCain, and Obama will all be asking questions on Tuesday. Perhaps no candidate could gain more from this week's hearings than Clinton. If she can somehow look the part of chief questioner, it could bolster her presidential readiness argument. In fact, one could argue, she HAS to become the story out of these hearings. After all, there aren't many game changing opportunities left before voting resumes on April 22.

*** The delegate count: Obama’s lead continues to creep higher, as he picked up another superdelegate -- DNC member and state legislator Margaret Campbell from Montana. Obama now holds an overall lead of 1,641-1,507 and trails in superdelegates, 255-225. Since Super Tuesday, per our count, Obama has picked up 55 supers while Clinton has lost a net of five. Overall, Obama has almost a 130-delegate lead over Clinton, which comes out to a 52%-48% split.

*** Busy Bill: The former president is in Puerto Rico today and, as usual these days, he has a very full schedule. As we've noted several times, the pace of Bill Clinton's schedule is amazing.

*** Heston passes: In honor of the now late Charlton Heston, you can't pry this First Read unless you do so from our cold, dead Blackberries." Heston may have done more for the gun movement than any other individual; his leadership on the issue humanized the pro-gun advocates at a time when the NRA, in particular, was under siege by gun control legislation all over the country. The NRA may never have a leader like Heston again but then again, they might not need one for some time as he put the pro-gun group on a path that helped alter the politics of guns for a generation.

*** On the trail: Clinton is down in DC; McCain gives a speech at the Veterans of Foreign Wars headquarters in Kansas City; and Obama is down in Chicago before heading to DC.

Paul Miller,
Regarding the hospital story, quick thought:

Senator Clinton says she's the most experienced and knowledgeable about healthcare, right?  I think she is also--I'll grant her that (I think she has the wrong plan now but that's another point).  So, as an expert on healthcare, she should know that it's against the law for a hospital to do what she says they were doing in her stump speech.  She says she "had no reason to doubt what she was told."  Really?  She had no reason to doubt it?  If she really understands healthcare, she'd have every reason in the world to doubt it.
Nice Bailout by Penn: Writing's on the wall & as Hillary gets more desperate & negative maybe Willimas gets blamed more than Penn. Anyway, he still keeps his day job.
I'm glad to see the last of Penn.  Felt this way weeks ago.

I don't think voters are concerned by the amount of money earned by the Clintons in 8 years.  They earned it.  Haven't the Obamas become millionaires at a much earlier age that the Clintons?? I applaud anyone who works hard for their money.  The Clintons left the White House owing 12 million in legal fees
defending themseves from the witch hunt and all the investigations that amounted to much to do about nothing.  That commission spent over 90 million
(I believe that is correct, if not it is close). Now that makes me mad.  What a waste of tax dollars.

Obama has told a ton of lies.  Check it out on:
           www.audacityofhyprocisy.com

Obama has said his Father was a freedom fighter when in fact he was part of one of the most corrupt & violent governments Kenya has ever had.  Obama was a board member at the Woods Fund. MIchelle Obama has taken over a quarter million from Treehouse with ties to Wal-Mart  Michelle's inflated salary at University of Chicage was increased by 150% after Obama became US Senator. He lied about being a professor (not) and the list goes on and on and on.
MSM just looks the other way.
Dean,

Read your facts buddy.  The University of Chicago did in fact support Obama's title as a Professor.  That is precedent at that University long before Obama was given the title.

Lets wait together for the next Clinton exageration since she does this stuff to herself.

Can't wait for the higher taxes and the constant barrage of "the white man is to blame" from the obamamites. You know its coming.
It looks like Obama is going to win this thing.  I suggest everyone stop the name-calling and try and pull the party together for Novemeber.  McCain will not be easy to defeat -- people like him personally.  I urge everyone who wants an end to Republican rule to start the unifying process.
First I have a hard time understanding why Clinton claimed to be the first person to oppose the war. When will she quit lying? I think ABC and Fox News are reporting this.
Oh God, what is there you'll be rewarded by lying? Do Americans love liars? You know, if you compare the lies told by Obama with those of Hillary's, you'll be shocked to find how a pathological liar she has become. It is sad.
Why would any sane individual vote for a pathological liar to be president of anything? Is this the direction we want our country headed for the next umteen years? Any person who thinks Hillary is the best person to be the leader of the U.S. is probably a latent pathological liar.
Those greedy old Clintons.  Bill out campaigning when he could be earning more millions giving speeches.  My, my, my.  Obamamaniacs will find fault with this.  Why not??  They do everything else.

Hillary 08

Sure the sword is mightier; when it's swallowed, fallen on, or tripped over. Just ask Bill, and Hill, how war-fare-like tactics, cut off their heads, and their campaign to ribbons.

Pulling for Obama '08

What is really funny about the Clintons is that the Republicans have been telling Democrats for years that these two are liars, and it's just now that the Dems have finally figured it out.

Here's some more news for you Dems. Obama is no different. So as soon as you get over your little love affair with this guy, you'll be doing the same thing to him as you are now doing to the Clintons.
Actually "The Truth Hurts," the guys at First Read did a good job of looking at the Rekzo issue several times -- and I would say more than warranted. Maybe you mssed, but the posts are somewhere on FR. The NYT also had an article on this, as did CNN.
Sorry you missed. So, this is actually old news. There are far more significant issues than the Rekzo, as Obama has already clarified his relationship with Rezko few days before the race speech.
Liar, Liar Pantsuits on Fire!  Just more of the same with Hillary lying about this, that, and every other thing.  We need change from the lying politicos like Clinton and McCain.  Obama is a breath of fresh air compared to the stale old winds of the old school Washington power politics.  Time for power to the people instead of power to the rich and greedy!

Go Obama!
I'm so tired of women supporting Hillary just because she is a woman. I'm a woman too, but can't support such a liar as Hillary. Her Bosnia sniper fire story was jsut too much. I cannot trust what she says. Women, don't be fooled. Someday we might have a better woman candidate, but not now. Hillary just lies way too much.
Mr. Penn is the poster boy for how the politics of insiders, for insiders and by insiders has ruined Washington. He represents the worst kind of paid consultant who will sell any viewpoint, any time for the highest possible price. Sometimes, like this time, he is selling both sides of an issue. He represents the way the Clintons' have learned to manipulate public opinion by following polls and telling voters what they want to hear. He is the penultimate liar for hire working for the most deceptive couple in politics today.
The only reason that Penn was able to stay around for so long is that the media refused to report on his other activities. His firm was also known for its union-busting activities...and we did not hear word one about that.

I have a suspicion that the media were too busy trying to keep a profitable news story alive to cover Mark Penn the way they would have had he worked for Obama. I don't necessarily think the media favors one over the other, I think they favor the story of a long hard-fought, contentious race - but when does their coverage cese to be news coverage of a story and start to make the story / be the story.

The truth is - the Clinton campaign would not have done a thing about Mark Penn had he not gotten caught. If the media let this slide (as they have with other issues), he would still be there.
I was never a Hillary Clinton supporter.  But I have to say it isn't even fun anymore to watch her campaign crash and burn.

I truly wish she would drop out because this is just an embarrassment at this point.
I am curious as to when we will see information on Clinton and Peter Paul and also when do we learn about Maggie Williams from Hillary's campaign and her dealings with Sub prime lending

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign manager, Maggie Williams, earned about $200,000 on the board of a Long Island subprime lender that charged prepayment penalties — a practice that Clinton, a critic of the subprime industry, now seeks to eliminate.
Williams, who took over the reins of Clinton’s campaign in early February, served as a director on the board of the Woodbury, N.Y.-based Delta Financial Corp. from April 2000 until the firm declared bankruptcy in December, according to Securities and Exchange Commission records
Those greedy old Clintons.  Bill out campaigning when he could be earning more millions giving speeches.  My, my, my.  Obamamaniacs will find fault with this.  Why not??  They do everything else.

Don't be so quick to assume that Penn is no longer chief strategist - with the Clintons, every statement must be read with a parsing eye...

We know Penn has lost his title as strategist, but that his firm is still retained to do the same job they've been doing, other than having Penn out front talking about it.

We know Wolfson and Gerin will *coordinate the message from here on out, but that doesn't mean they will be the ones forming the message - just that they will be the ones 'on camera' explaining it.

It's entirely possible (and I say probable) that Penn is doing the same job, only off camera.  The story was manufactured to distract the MSM from focusing on any number of more serious developments over the weekend that cut against the Clinton candidacy - this would be the least negative story for them.

It's positively Rovian.
I am a Hillary supporter and am offended by all the people either to lazy to factcheck.org and all those trying to get Obama into a position he doesnt deserve and will destroy the party for his own ego.The media has given him a pass and tried to get him elected from day 1. Hillary just quiety overcomes and will again. I am offended because people say they have to give Obama the nom cause blacks will be upset. Hello??Whites and women will be upset and it doesnt seem to matter. Well steal the election for nom, give it to Obama and see how much you lose by in Nov.She gives important speeches gets maybe a mention. when ever Obama coughs all stations close down to listen. Its ok we will overcome anyway.
The American people realize that because a person's Pastor says something doesn't mean he agrees with it. My Pastor is a die-hard Republican but that doesn't make me one.
The fact that Hillary herself makes these "misstatements" (i.e. Bosnia) is what people see.
That isn't MSNBC's fault- it's hers!
Regarding HRC's latest "Gaffs". The slogan for the HRC campaign should change to "you ain't trying if you ain't cheating". More fodder that affirms that the Clintons will do or say anything to win at all costs.

Here is a very simple point about camparing both the Dem candidates- Look how the two campaigns are being run. One has been groundbreaking and inspired its followers. The other is full of scandal, lies and constant in fighting and low blow, back door politics. You want the ladder group running the country? There's how to answer your "experienced" question..
When will the public get to know the real reasons for Billary's run for the presidency.  They are a couple of pretentious bums in it for the fame and fortune with little regard for the American people.  Wake up and smell the stench.  If it looks like poo and smells like poo, you don't have to eat it to make sure.  Go John McCain a real American.
obama will lose if he gets the nom. he has surrounded himself with "professional victims of racisim" his relationship with wright makes him un-electable by blue-collar, middle-america. we're sick of feeling sorry for harvard grads married to princeton grads. we won't be made to feel guilty anymore for sins of our ancestors. we will vote mcain b-4 obama!
HRC, reflects what America doesn't want as the next President. A liar who conjures up anything to make herself look like a hero, yet the truth being ""when your hollow YOUR JUST HOLLOW!
maybe someone should point out to mccain the surge is failing, the religious factions in iraq will be fighting until the end of days, just like they always have, they think that is their purpose in life, I suppose it is. we should come home and let them fight in peace
You all realize that Penn deliberately did the Columbia trip to get off this campaign right? He was fired before the end, so if this wreck hits a brick wall on May 6th (most likely) he can claim he wasn't a part of it. Even her own pollster knows. The only sad part is he and his company are departing with about 20 million in campaign contributions to the Clintons. Never get in bed with a pollster Hillary.
Senator Clinton has done a great service to this country:  She made it a mainstream idea that women can be viable candidates for the Presidency.  From now on, it will no longer be unusual to see a woman candidate for the office.  Senator Clinton deserves our thanks for that.

However, by staying in this race, Senator Clinton is now doing a great disservice to future women Presidential candidates and women in general.  The longer she stays in, the harder it will be for another woman to run in the next election because people are starting to get a sour taste in their mouth about Senator Clinton.

One last observation:

For those of you supporting Senator Clinton who threaten to jump ship and vote for McCain should she lose the nomination, stop placing your loyalty to your candidate ahead of your loyalty to this nation.

Senator McCain is nothing if not a guaranteed four more years of the Bush Administration and we all know what a disaster Bush & Co. have been for America.  The economy is in the tank.  People are losing their jobs, their homes, and their middle class status.  Our reputation in the international community is sullied and will remain so for a generation or more.  We are losing one war that should have been fought (Afghanistan) and another that shouldn't (Iraq) and are being threatened with the prospect of fighting another (Iran).  Our veterans have been abused and ignored, and our troops have been bullied and asked to sacrifice more than they ever should have.

If you vote for that, over what the Democratic candidate represents, then you are not a good American.  What you are is a narrow-minded, self-interested reactionary.

I spent six years in service to this country and then went to law school to protect your right to decide.  But when I see the poor decision-making skills of some of the Clinton supporters here, I have to ask myself why?
Everone hates Hillary. No one seems to realize that all the politicians lie! No one seems to mind that
everyday in PA we have to listen to Obama's claim that he doesn't take money from the Lobbist's but he doesn't mind taking $36,000 from Exxon executives. He
takes money from a lot of Oil Executives. Grow up people all the Politican's lie!
politicians Lie!
Hillary keeps lying becuse people still support her in doiung so.It's that simple.

She won in the past by lying, and hopes to continue to win in the future.

Hopefully, the voters will finally send a message that they no longer wish to be manipulated by her; until then expect nothing to change as she will continue to believe she is giving her supporters what they want...a total and complete fabrication of her experience, her postion on issues and her beliefs.

How sad that so many believe they expect no better.
As an undecided voter, I'm concerned that the press isn't talking about Obama's flaws enough for us to get comfortable w/ them, and Karl Rove and the Republicans will expose them weeks before a tight November race to put McCain over the top

We already know Hillary's negatives
Good riddance, now Clinton should be next!  Step down!!!!
OBAMA: BIG ON TALK, BUT HASN'T WALKED THE WALK.
OBAMA SENATE TRACK RECORD: PLAYED BOTH SIDES TO PLAY IT SAVE. GO AHEAD &  CHECK IT OUT!
OBAMA:NO MILITARY SERVICE FOR HIS COUNTRY.
OBAMA PLATFORM OF HOPE & CHANGE: DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THE HOUSE & SENATE ARE GOING TO ROLL OVER FOR CHANGE BECAUSE SOMEONE WITH THE NAME OBAMA IS CALLING FOR CHANGE?
OBAMA HALO:SO FAR,MOSTLY A FREE RIDE TO THE TOP BY MOST MAJOR MEDIA. THE SHEEN COMES OFF WITH SCRUTNY & OBAMA TURNS OUT TO BE NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER POLITICIAN.
OBAMA: APPLICANT FOR THE NO. 1 JOB IN THE WORLD WITH A RESUME THAT JUST DOSEN'T MEET QUALIFICATION.

HAVING LISTENED TO OBAMAS OLD SENATE STUMP SPEECHES, I WAS EXITED, THAT ONCE IN SENATE, HE WOULD MAKE SOME WAVES IN WASHINGTON FOR CHANGE, BUT OBAMA INSTEAD ELECTED TO VOTE ALONG HIS COLLEAGUES, OR PLAYED IT SAVE.
ALSO, I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH FOLKS TRYING TO PORTRAY THEMSELVES AS MLK II. OBAMA NEVER ENDURED GREAT SACRIFICE, PAIN, INDIGNATION & LOSS OFF FREEDOM UNLIKE MLK HAD. I WAS THERE! MOST OF YOU GUYS WEREN'T!!!
FOR THESE & MANY MORE REASONS I & THE DEMS THAT I KNOW
WILL BOYCOTT B. OBAMA IN NOVEMBER & YOU'RE WELCOME TO CONFIRM JUST THAT.
JOHN, RET.DISABLED ARMY VET

What does it tell us about the moral convictions of a candidate whose chief strategists are pollsters and PR flaks?  Then again, if you are fundamentally amoral, why not have pollsters and PR types run your campaign for you.
For all you obamabots bashing a potential Clinton presidency-Don't be so cocky and sure Barack will be such a great president. While Hillary was Bill's most trusted advisor, Barry had only recently become Barack.
Instead of showing hatred for Hilary lets discuss Sen. Obamas friendship with a man named William Ayers who in the 1970's ran with the underground and bombed our Pentago and in 2001 Ayers stated he wished he did more.Another friend like his Pastor Wright. He claims only a friend because they live near each other and children attend the same schools. In the past he had taken $250.00 campaign money. All the stations that cannot find any wrong with Obama doesn't let you know this but FoxTV wasn;t afraid to tell the story. Wake Up and vote for Hillary.
My 8 year old daughter and myself were discussing who I wanted to vote for and why the other day; she asked me if Hillary got the nomination would I vote for her even though I really support Barak.  I told her (and mean it) that if Hillary got the Demo nomination, I would vote for McCain.  She was surprised that I wouldn't choose a woman over McCain and asked me why.  My answer is (and was) that at least I can trust that John McCain has some integrity and has shown strength of character under some very trying times as a prisoner of war...can you imagine Hillary EVER having that much loyalty to anything or anyone, let alone an abstract ideal such as duty or love of country?
I am sick of hearing the name Obama.  He should end his run for office because he believes what his preacher says or he would not be a member of a church that preaches hate for 20 years. When he used his grandmother (who was suppose to have raised him) in his speech to sooth all the talk about his pastor was the last straw for me.  If he loved her so much, why would he use her like that?  He lies to suit his postion and never gets called on it.  What's the deal ?  The same thing happened with Bush.  The media got him elected and look what we have.  Do we want an other Bush in the White House?  Why can't the media be fair?
Dont matter one bit. Clinton can make him resign - whatever that means - but she is stil a scam of the earth!!! Since when does been fired, resigning, and quitinbg allow you to still be on payroll and be involved in the same position you resigned, or got ousted from?

The Clintons are just so full of it.
OK PENNsylvanians,
How much doublespeak from the Clinton campaign are you willing to swallow??? Hillary's chief strategist Penn taking money to send more of your manufacturing jobs south. It is about tricking you to vote against your own interests.

There is a remarkable divide between Obama's truthful rhetoric and that of the Clinton and McCain campaigns.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice that both Clinton and McCain are currently saying anything to get elected, and changing their messages to pander to whomever they are speaking to at the moment.
Amy of Illinois:

Do you really want a liar in the White House?  Gee, her small lies eventually add up to big lies and that could put the world, including you, your loved ones and friends in a world of hurt.

Billary also lied about where Chelsea was on the day of 9/11; it was a made up and fabricated story and was disputed by her own daughter.

Can this nation really trust a liar of such small details and circumstacnes to run this big nation?  I don't think so..a lie always catches up with you and boy could this nation be Gone With the Wind because of the windies this ???? tells...I cannot call her a lady and she is an insult to the female gender..
I Have learnt one thing aboute the clinton administration is that it lies and cheats just to win.No White House for **** clintons
Campell has withdraw her endrosement for Obama!!!
Dear Just Wondering:  The Hospital story was NOT a lie.  The Hillary statements about Tuzla (which was under constant enemy fire---the enemy that President Clinton VANQUISHED with minimum casualy loss) have been blown out of all proportion.  Bill Clinton was this country's greatest President despite the antipathy of the news media which despised him from day one. Big media went after Gore and now they dissect every SYLLABLE that comes out of Hillary's mouth while they fawn and kiss up to this Obama nobody from the state senate of Illinois. The New York Times is a hotbed of Clinton-hating whether it's Frank Rich or that Flora The Red Menace Maureen Dowd. Then there's Lee Cowan, Cafferty on CNN, Chris "The thrill up my leg" Matthews, etc.

If not Hillary then McCain, NO OBAMA
In the North Dakota primary I expect Hilary to claim she hunted buffalo with the Sioux.
Dean, Waterbury, CT

It seems that you Clinton Supporters have your facts
all wrong. The problem is, Hillary is losing and
you people will not admit it. It is all about
JEALOUSY!!! Can't you see through the Clintons??
They cheat and lie too much. Sorry.
