White House on Mark Penn, Colombia

Posted: Monday, April 07, 2008 11:13 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

From NBC's Jeannie Ohm
The question came up at the White House gaggle this morning whether Mark Penn had any contacts with the White House regarding the Colombian Free Trade agreement. The answer by Fratto was, not that he is aware of. The office of the U.S. Trade Representative had a similar response: "to their knowledge, no."

That said, Sean Spicer at USTR said they did come in regular contact with Burston representatives regarding the trade agreement. But he added neither he nor anyone in the office could readily remember Penn being in attendance at any of those meetings. But they didn't discount the possibility he could have been at one of the many meetings that have taken place since November 2006.

The whole point of this is that Hillary spoke in no uncertain terms that her campaign would be free of such double-dippers.
It doesn't matter if he was there or not. He should have been no where near such a delicate and explosive arrangement in the first place.

How you run your campaign is how you would run the country.

If you do not have truthfulness as a core value, you will be rudderless as conditions change. It is called "TRUSTWORTHINESS"
This is why Hillary must pack it in.  She is just a poor leader, no matter how she spins the story.
We simply can not trust her to tell the truth to us.
Penn's firm is still doing their polling.  Why would you want to do business with a firm that wants to do business with the Colombian government in terms of outsourcing jobs?

Anyone who believes that a Clinton administration won't be bought and paid for is VERY naive and ignornat.
What ever happened to the fanatic Hillary supporters that posted here, liuke HP Boston, etc.? They seem to have crawled under their rocks never to return.
So who speaks on behalf of our government?  So Penn has that much power to make these deals and proposals and our government didn't know the meeting was taking place?

I don't believe Clinton is at fault in this. What is going on here, when we have key negotiations taking place and the government is not asking questions?

What are we to believe?  I await the outcome of this debacle.
Mark Penn does not need to be in contact with the WH, his firm will do the job for him. All he needs is to b a lying and stupid CEO and direct his employees what to do without him actually being involved in the lobbying of our government.
The question is why Hillary would have allowed this crook as her chief strategist. Unless she was a crook herself, she'd have gotten rid of this guy for the good of her candidacy. But she chose to let him help her lie, lie, lie.
A transparent and serious candidate is one who does not tolerate a guy like Mark the Penny (he is way overpaid).
Hillary HAS TO WIN by double digits to show momentum
She has to get 65% to 70% of the vote to hope to catch up to Obama in Pleadged delegates

Obama leads by 13% in PLEDGED DELEGATES
13% is a WIDE MARGIN...

Pennsylvania Polls: Democratic Primary
Huffington Post   |   April 3, 2008 04:55 PM

APRIL 6: An ARG poll shows a considerable tightening in the primary, with a tie between Clinton and Obama:

Hillary Clinton: 45%
Barack Obama: 45%
Undecided: 6%

APRIL 4: A local Pennsylvania poll shows Clinton with an 11-point lead, down since from the previous poll two weeks ago but still comfortable:

Clinton: 49%
Obama: 38%

APRIL 3: The latest Insider Advantage poll has Hillary clinging to a small lead, although a large number of voters remain undecided:

The internals show Clinton leading only slightly among white voters, while Obama leads among blacks. However, a larger-than-average number of black voters remain undecided, which suggests an advantage for Obama if past results are an indicator.

Clinton: 45%
Obama: 43%
Undecided: 12%

APRIL 2: Clinton maintains a healthy lead in a Quinnipac poll, with her lead contracting by only a few points since March:

Clinton: 50%
Obama: 41%

However, a PPP poll (pdf) finds Obama with the lead, albeit well within the margin of error:

Obama: 45%
Clinton: 43%
Isn't it a conflict of interest? Hillary is a Senator of the United States. Penn, regardless of the company he owns and who he purports to represent, remains on the payroll of Hillary's campaign and, as such, represents her. He will still do polling for her and offer advice. This is exactly what he did before.

Hillary by employing Mark Penn is therefore working with Colombia on a FTA. Is this one of her committee assignments as a senator? And should they be receiving a fee from Colombia for this?
Did I hear that Mark Penns company has LOTS to do with the Blackwater company? Along with other's who have government contracts?
Just to know that Mark Penn ia a registered lobbiest, is enough for me to make all kinds of accusations.

It looks like Obama is going to win this thing.  I suggest everyone stop the name-calling and try and pull the party together for Novemeber.  McCain will not be easy to defeat -- people like him personally.  I urge everyone who wants an end to Republican rule to start the unifying process.
I think there's a bigger story here, in between Penn & taxes. I think Bill Clinton's influence or effect on his wife needs to be revisited. From what I've been reading he was the main proponent for keeping Penn on, and was the decider for Penn to leave. Is Bill playing puppet master? The taxes are a non issue, save for the 15 million from Bill's questionable dealings. If these dealing were to follow her to the white house and he is influencing things behind the scenes, we wouldn't know until it's too late. We all heard her claims she can control him & that it's her candidacy, but we all also heard her speak of sniper fire. This puppet's name is Pinnochio.
Had Obama Supporters come to my door in Charlotte NC. Very nice ladies who wanted and got my support for Obama.
"But they didn't discount the possibility he could have been at one of the many meetings that have taken place since November 2006."

Do they take minutes? Those in attendance are usually listed at the top.
They honestly can't remember if the chief strategist for a major DEM candidate named Clinton was in attendance at meetings sponsored by a Republican administration?
My guess is the Bush Administration doesn't want to do anything to further injure the GOP's first choice in who they want to run against.
Can you spell (and smell) Washington insider?
What's sad, is that some people will actually be fooled into thinking Penn no longer has anything to do with the campaign, since he's "resigned".

The difference between Friday and today?  Friday, Penn was called "chief strategist," did polling, and offered advice.  Today, he's called "advisor" and does polling, and offers advice.  I bet by Wednesday, they change his title from "advisor" to "outside polling consultant", and STILL have him doing the same jobs for the campaign he's always done.
Isn't this the same campaign that blasted Obama for "speaking" to our enemies or countries we have issues with? I guess taking money isn't the same as talking, it's better!
As long as this story stays in the headlines, things will look bad for the Clinton camp.

My question is - if you stopped 100 people on the street and asked them who Mark Penn is, would even 75% of them know?  I think not.

I think the health care "story" in Hillary's stump speech [the one about Trina Bechtel - Google it] is much bigger news, and I have yet to see much coverage of it today.  I think that would have more traction with the "average" off-the-street citizen.

I've noticed that her and a few other people have thrown their captain overboard here lately.

I guess the truth I have been spewing about the Clinton's over the last year has finally awaken the senses of common americans and they are leaving her in droves.
Mark Penn hasn't officially been "fired". He's "stepped aside"; he is still on Hillary's payroll as his company will continue to give her advise and do her polling. What does THIS say about Mrs. Clinton judgement, Hillary supporters? By the way, please send her a check.....she's got bills to pay.
I don't think Obama will be able to connect w/ the blue-collar white males.... there is a large number of them in PA, and they are not reflective in the polls
Hey guys isn't it obvious Penn has realised the game is up and decided to move on. This guy is a business man and is only interested in making money. He sensed the inevitable that will unfold in the Pensilve.. primary and did a quick ditto to a new business opportunity. Incase you hv never heard it's called exit strategy. The Clinton camp knows it's over.
hmmmmm......We won't hold Barry responsible for Wright's actions but we'll hold Clinton accountable for Penn's actions? How did she know he was working on the Columbia action?
The fact that she would hire someone like Mark Penn, pay his company millions,  still allow him to keep his day job speaks volumes for her lack of judgement.

Is this how she would run her administration? Same old, same old, lies, lies and more lies.

You  know Hillary, I would have voted for you in the GE, if you won the nomination. However, the more I see of you and your campaign I am astonished at your lack of good judgement in the decisions you have made. I am glad long ago I decided  to support Senator Obama.

If you should manage to steal the nomination now, I will leave the choice for President blank.
When is the exact point that one goes from being a "fighter" to being stubborn? Seems like we had 8yrs of stubborness, wouldn't want a continuation of that.
Senator Clinton has done a great service to this country:  She made it a mainstream idea that women can be viable candidates for the Presidency.  From now on, it will no longer be unusual to see a woman candidate for the office.  Senator Clinton deserves our thanks for that.

However, by staying in this race, Senator Clinton is now doing a great disservice to future women Presidential candidates and women in general.  The longer she stays in, the harder it will be for another woman to run in the next election because people are starting to get a sour taste in their mouth about Senator Clinton.

One last observation:

For those of you supporting Senator Clinton who threaten to jump ship and vote for McCain should she lose the nomination, stop placing your loyalty to your candidate ahead of your loyalty to this nation.

Senator McCain is nothing if not a guaranteed four more years of the Bush Administration and we all know what a disaster Bush & Co. have been for America.  The economy is in the tank.  People are losing their jobs, their homes, and their middle class status.  Our reputation in the international community is sullied and will remain so for a generation or more.  We are losing one war that should have been fought (Afghanistan) and another that shouldn't (Iraq) and are being threatened with the prospect of fighting another (Iran).  Our veterans have been abused and ignored, and our troops have been bullied and asked to sacrifice more than they ever should have.

If you vote for that, over what the Democratic candidate represents, then you are not a good American.  What you are is a narrow-minded, self-interested reactionary.

I spent six years in service to this country and then went to law school to protect your right to decide.  But when I see the poor decision-making skills of some of the Clinton supporters here, I have to ask myself why?
How about a story about Obama's voting record in IL, First Read? Six times tried to change his vote after voting finished. Those present said he was seen as a political opportunist and tried to change those controversial votes to play both sides. Of course, let's add the 130 times he was "present". And, First Read, you sure dropped the questionnaire matter quickly. The man lied. He saw those statements; he signed those statements. He says staffers prepared but it didn't represent his beliefs. Now, the President signs umpteen items everyday. Is he going to read those?  Of course, saying staffers did it fits with his M.O. as stated at debate not to give him a paper until two minutes before he needed it. In other words, do the work, and I'll present it as mine. HE'S A FAKE AND FRAUD.
MARK PENNS REPLACEMENT IN THE CLINTON CAMP  IS HOWARD WOLFSEN THE COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR.HIS DAY JOB IS AT GLOVER GLOBEL WHERE HE REPRESENTS NEWCORP(A.K.A. FOX NEWS)AND EVERY MAJOR PLAYER IN THE INSURANCE BUSINESS.SO LET CONFLICT OF INTEREST CONTINUE.
Actually, it is hard to say that Clinton is not at fault on the Penn incident, as one person wrote above. She knew about the conflict of interest for a long time and thought it was not a problem, or she did not know about but now judges that it is not a problem--as she tells us--or she was clueless. Which scenario is least problematic? Any way you cut it, she is at fault.
Does Columbia trade agreement mean that we can get all the dope tax free? Not funny, I know.
For those of you supporting Senator Clinton who threaten to jump ship and vote for McCain should she lose the nomination, stop placing your loyalty to your candidate ahead of your loyalty to this nation.

Law Student 72: If I have to vote for McCain, it will be because I DO CARE about this nation.  I cannot vote for Obama. He has deep-seated unresolved racist issues to face. His wife is anti-American. He surrounds himself with anti-Americans like Wright and William Ayers. There's a lot I don't like about McCain but I would NEVER have to worry about his patriotism and loyalty to this country. With Barry, we'll always be wondering......
I spent six years in service to this country and then went to law school to protect your right to decide.  But when I see the poor decision-making skills of some of the Clinton supporters here, I have to ask myself why?
*******
So, Law Student 72, how does it make you feel about your service to know that our possible next President sat in a church for 20 years where he, as a congregant, pledged his first allegiance to Africa.

How do you feel about your service when you know that our possible next President hangs out with William Ayers, a person who bombed the Capital, the Pentagon and NY Police Dept and then on 9-11-01 said his only regret was he hadn't bombed more?

How does it make you feel about your service to hear Michelle Obama-Big-Mouth say America is mean and she's only proud of America for the first time in her adult life since her husband is running for President?

How does it make you feel about your service to know that the Black Panthers and Hanoi Jane support your candidate?

Sure seems to me Barry attracts an awful lot of anti-American types.  So, don't talk to me about my decision-making skills.
Bush today gave the Columbian Trade Deal to Congress. What did Hillary and Mark Penn have to do with this decision? I wonder since it came immediately after Penn was exposed, maybe now the Columbians will give him back his job. I hope Congress can block this bill until Bush leaves office.
So many would make reference to Obama being the trustworhty opponent who has told an untold amount of lies about his record as a Senator and his affiliation with his church and his affiliation with his friend in the home purchase who is on trial for many illegal activities he is associated with while we are at it Mr. Kennedy is in fact a relative but what would one suspect of a father who was a bootlegger during the probition. Good relatives and friends O Bama is surrounded by them Farenkauf, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton they have all been so upright but only to their cause to try to point out the disparities of White vs Black it is not so much the White racial divide as it is the Black atttitude of give me something for nothing. There are many good intentioned Blacks in America Many who are my friends and neighbors and people who have held great positions in goverment. But not the crooks who are now attempting to make the White House their home, To give Obama the key to the White House would be likened unto giving the Fox the Key to the henhouse.
We tend to forget that the Balanced Budget was given to us by the Clintons and the greatest employment record also he was govenor of one of the leading states for educating the children of that state, thiings as those just did not happen they needed forethought and leadership and to say that it was done by either MR. or Mrs. Clinton is not factual they are as a team while over 50% of Americans chose divorce in tough times the Clintons have worked things ou so lets stay away from that. And when I hear words that the Black Community was ddenied this or that look around they as a Race have prospered more in America than in any other Country they have been associated with so if they do not like their standing in America they can and should go to their home countries such as Liberia or any other they chose. Mr Obama is a grat orator but he is also the greatest threat to America this country has ever known and to those young Americans who have not experienced the Bigotry, hatred and disrespect by the Black Comunity do not close your eyes to this for we as a part of this society are losing our rights to speak freely and openly for fear it may offend others who are of a different opinion the first act of any politician should be to treat all humans equally giving no preference to race color or creed then America can move forward. Obama does not represent this concept judge this by the people he is associated with that alone should give you the answer.
Hillary is really a repub-lite. She is both for/against the trade agreements. Penn couldn't hide his moves so just went on with it. Got to make sure big wheeler-dealer Bill can "open doors" or whatever it is he does to get those large fees. The Dem Party is two parties...Repub-dems and Dems and splitting right b4 our eyes...we need to get the vote out and be heard..Obama 4 Prez true Dem!

A lobyist doesn't make decisions, they try to influence the vote by representing a paying client.
Stick around and you might learn something about politics.
