Clinton to call for Olympics boycott

Posted: Monday, April 07, 2008 1:18 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: , ,

From NBC's John Boxley and Mark Murray
A campaign source confirms the report from Drudge that Clinton will call for Bush to boycott the opening ceremony at the upcoming Olympics. The source says a campaign release will be going out shortly.

Not a bad way to change the subject, eh?

*** UPDATE *** Here is the statement: "The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership. These events underscore why I believe the Bush Administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government."

"I encourage the Chinese to take advantage of this moment as an opportunity to live up to universal human aspirations of respect for human rights and unity, ideals that the Olympic games have come to represent. Americans will stand strong in support of freedom of religious and political expression and human rights. Americans will also stand strong and root for the success of American athletes who have worked hard and earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games of 2008."

*** UPDATE 2 *** At a March 25th press conference (where she said Jeremiah Wright would not have been her pastor), Clinton demurred when asked if the U.S. should boycott the Olympics. “Let’s wait on that; I don’t have an opinion on that,” Clinton said with a look of uncertainty when asked if the U.S. should avoid the Olympics.

Here’s the video. The question relevant to the Olympics starts 6 minutes, 30 seconds in:

Here’s the transcript:

REPORTER: Can you talk about Tibet at all? Are you concerned about what’s going on there--?

CLINTON: I am

REPORTER: Specifically should the U.S. consider not going to China for the Olympics as a result of it?

CLINTON: Look I think that what’s happening in Tibet is deeply troubling and this is a pattern of the Chinese government with respect to their treatment of Tibet. I’ve actually raised that issue with Chinese leadership going back a number of years. I don’t think we should wait until the Olympics to make sure that our views are known. And I think we should be speaking our through our administration now in a much more forceful way. And you know supporting people in Tibet who are trying to preserve their culture and religion from tremendous pressure by the Chinese.

REPORTER: Avoid the Olympics?

CLINTON [at 7:17, a look of uncertainty]: Let’s wait on that, I don’t have an opinion on that.

More of the same cowboy diplomacy!
By time this campaign is over, I would not be shocked if she never won an elected office again.  You can bet she will be challenged for her senate seat in 2012.  Either by a Democrat, or, most likely, a republican that feels her negatives from this campaign will give him/her a shot against Clinton.  Even more so if McCain wins the presidency.
Boycotting the Olympics worked so well for Jimmy Carter, now Hillary wants to get in on the act. The Chinese must be shaking in their boots over this.
Pathetic! They are never accountable for anything!!! DO WE WANT 4-8 YEARS OF THIS %$*&@!

ENOUGH, DEAR GOD...ENOUGH! Please go away BILLARY!

NO MULLIGANS ALLOWED IN THE WHITE HOUSE
I think there should be a boycott of Hillary Clinton.  She made all this money, anybody who gives Hillary money from here on in will be considered a fool for doing so.

Hillary can try to change the subject all she wants to, but in the end, it is her lying that has gotten her in a lot of trouble.

Hillary Clinton
A Liar for All Seasons
What is going on? Where is this coming from? So Hillary is taking her cues from the French now? If America wants to send a message to the Chinese, boycotting the Olympics is about the stupidest way I can think of.
Clinton has called for twice as much in the last year than in her entire 35 Years of exagerience (meaning exageration of experience)
It looks like Obama is going to win this thing.  I suggest everyone stop the name-calling and try and pull the party together for Novemeber.  McCain will not be easy to defeat -- people like him personally.  I urge everyone who wants an end to Republican rule to start the unifying process.
I was with Hillary until she came up with this idea. A boycott of the closing ceremony is required, not the opening ceremony. This is what happens when you lose a great tactician like Mark Penn, you get your position on boycotts all screwed up.
Clinton has called for twice as much in the last year than in her entire 35 Years of exagerience (meaning exageration of experience)
Yeah ... that's what I am worried about today in America : A major sports event!

Billary, Billary, Dock ... her time ran of the clock.
It's too bad that whenever the Clintons do "anything" the questions to me are....What's in it for them? ...What are they really doing?  I agree .... always trying to spin it away from what's going on in their own house...
Wow, good for her.  Now, will she call for a continued boycott of China when she returns to the Senate?  Doubtful - unfortunately, there is no one in all of Washington with enough guts to stand up for against China's horrid human rights stances.

Looks like Washington can always stand up and scream when oil is involved, but when human rights and freedom really ARE at stake, no one seems to care.
Sure is a nice way to change the subject, especially since the MSM is so willing to change the subject.  What a bunch of drones you are.
Kind of hard to be critcal of the economy. Throw another 100 points on the Dow again today. Looks like this will be the shortest recession ever on record.
Not a bad way to change the subject, eh?

Yeah Mark, because it's not like she hasn't already condemned China for their awful record on human rights. Oh wait, that's right she has a long record on condemning China on their awful civil rights record, Jerk.
Well - I think maybe prior to coming up with that "solution" she might want to see how interconnected US loans are to the Chinese money.
I think we should stop politicizing the Olympics. There are alot of folks who have worked very hard to get there - stop playing politics with people's dreams.

P.S. Who wants to bet that at this very moment a Clinton advisor is in China saying the exact opposite?
The Olympics should be void of all politics. Don't think this statement is meant to deflect any current topic such as Mark Penn or her tax returns?
I think Bush should go to China and stay there, he should also take Cheney and Rove with. Hope we don't hear anything about them again.
She is very good at changing the subject or minimalizing it.How she dare to make light of her mishandling of the truth in the Bosnia thing really bugs me.It's is as if she said ok you caught me but I was only kidding so my lie is ok.I actually dont think that the Ohio thing about the woman and the hospital thing was Hillarys' fault but all of the other misstatements makes it easier to belive it was.
not a bad way to change the subject? And that's all it is. When Hillary was in a position of power as First Lady and Pelosi - with others - tried to dissuade Hillary from going to the International Women's Conference to make a statement about China's human rights policy, did she? NO. Now, she needs relief. Classic Clinton say/ do WHATEVER you have to to get through the news cycle.
Did she clear this with Norman Hsu? Or with Charlie Tre? Gotta check with those major contributors and bundlers.
Why not call on Bush to call on China to stop the massacre in Tibet. What do the Olympics Opening Ceremony have to do with anything?

Just more noise.
Bait and switch.  Bait and switch.

Never mind all of this news about Penn and health care and snipers in Bosnia - CHINA.  LOOK AT CHINA!

Clinton to release her Final Four bracket tomorrow.
It's 3 a.m. and your campaign is imploding.
What do you do?
* quick accuse Obama or his surrogates of some absurd, made up crime
* BOYCOTT OLYMPICS
* PRETEND TO FIRE YOU CHIEF STRATEGIST, BUT KEEP EVERYTHING ON HIS DESK, BECAUSE HE'LL RETURN LATER
* ACCUSE OBAMA AGAIN, IN CASE EVERYONE FORGETS
* CHALLENGE HIM TO A BOWL OFF
* SEND BILL OUT TO THREATEN SUPER DELEGATES
* ACCUSE MICHELLE OBAMA OF SOMETHING
* LIE ABOUT AN EARLIER LIE YOU WERE BUSTED ON
* PAY OFF THE MEDIA TO SUPPRESS THE STORY
* CLAIM YOU HAVE WON ALL THE STATES THAT MATTER
* CLAIM YOU WON THE ELECTORAL STATES
* BLAME OBAMA'S ENTIRE FAMILY OF SOMETHING
* LOOK FOR BILL, TO RESCUE YOU
* START CRYING
THAT WILL BE A BUSY 3 A.M. CALL, I AM EXHAUSTED JUST THINKING ABOUT IT
The level of vehemence, rage, and outright malevelent hatred towards a former first lady of the United States by people within her own party that call themselves "democrats" is absolutely unprecedented.  You Obamatons are not democrats.  Go form your own Obama party.  The Clintons gave us 8 years of Democratic Party rule and it was a time of peace and prosperity unequaled in modern times.  How about a little respect Obamatons for the first lady of the democratic party.  You know that she isn't going anywhere. If it comes down to it, she will be Obama's VP, and he has to offer it to her.  She will accept.  So how about come around and accept this incredible woman, stop the hate, because she isn't going anywhere.
Yet another Clinton comment/position that seems fair and reasonable.  I get a kick out of the way people are struggling to disagree with Clinton, yet while agreeing with a position they probably also agree.

"Not a bad way to change the subject, eh?"
--I wonder if she'll call herself a leader on this issue too, now.
LIAR, LIAR....PANT SUIT ON FIRE!  Mark Penn is just a symptom of the overlying issue here...and we have been aware of this issue since the 90's.  The Clinton's are the height of dirty politics.  Between the self-important lying about her experience and dramatic stump speech fodder, and the selling of Presidential influence by Bill, this whole scenario is a disgrace.  Are you really telling me that out of 300 million+ American citizens, this is the ABSOLUTE BEST we can do?  I am an Obama supporter (as of late), but he should be doing much better against her than where we are now.  We have some severe problems facing this nation, and I don't think self-interested wind bags are the answer.  I am interested what others think:  sknapp@prcn.net

hillary confronting the chinese parliment helped lead to the end of systematic murder of infant chinese girls.

Oh, I forgot Obama was busy hanging with Rezko and voting Present 130 times while she was doing that.
I guess the red Chinese campaign donations are drying up.
Hillary, lets discuss your policies.  I know as a mere $100 millionaire you are best qualified to relate to the embattled working poor and middle class. You can write a "how to book" on utlizing public service to become a millionaire.

Becoming Jimmy Carter and demanding a boycott of the Olympics is much more pressing than discussing the quagmire of Iraq, the massive job lossess and the housing crisis.

No one should accuse you of trying to change the subject from Columbia Gate, Sniper Gate and how I donated milllions to a family trust that my family controls for a tax write off.

THE EXACT SAME CAN BE SAID ABOUT OBAMA.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.
Pennsylvania,

How about boycotting the Clintons? They made 3.3 million dollars in consulting fees from a company called 'Info USA', that sold personal, and consumer data, about senior citizens, to crooked tele-marketers. The Clintons helped rob, con, and rip-off, those of the financially weakest demographic, who ironically, are among their most loyal supporters.

Don't vote for Hillary Clinton. She's already sold us down the river, in that leaky NAFTA boat of her's.

What is it going to take before we wake up, and send her promises the way of that which we neccessarily flush as we leave the privvy?

Let's give Senator Obama a chance.

Pulling for Obama '08
Oh that Hillary!  I guess the new Chief Strategist told Hillary, that she should go after Bush and issue a challenge for him not to attend the 2008 Summer Olympics in China, to divert attention away from her troubles.

Come on fellow Americans, let's rally behind Obama to end this type Clintionian diversion tactics.
If this is going to be the way she approaches foreign policy as President we might be in for a wild ride.

Wait until you are caught up in a scandal and then, suddenly, take up a dramatic foreign policy stance as though it just suddenly occured to you.

I ain't buyin' it...
What is going on? Where is this coming from? So Hillary is taking her cues from the French now? If America wants to send a message to the Chinese, boycotting the Olympics is about the stupidest way I can think of.
Wilson, Seattle (Sent Monday, April 07, 2008 1:26 PM)

Just like Obama has taken his cues from Rev. Wright.
Strange, they (the Clintons) were not concerned about the genocide in Rwanda when the Billary's were president.
Pennsylvanians, let's boycott Hillary !
But Hillary. You have stated that you had visted over 80 countries while first lady and that you had worked hard to develop good relationships with other countries and that you have great foreign policy  experience. You would think that the Chinese would do whatever it is you ask them by now.

We know the real reason that you have called for the boycott Hillary. You and Bill had intended on visiting the Olympics but are now afraid you may have to duck at the airport and dodge Chinese bulllets.
Boycotting is the right thing to do, at least Hillary has the sense to say it...when Barak was asked he said he did not know what the right answer was...what a surprise.

I am not a supporter of Obama, that being said, I do agree with Michael (above) that, it is time to unite.

I read these blogs everyday, as well as daily read the Huffington post, the NYT, the Washington Post, watch MSNBC, listen to Air America radio, and have examined Obama's website very closely. I am in the demographic of those that are supposed to be a fan of his. Yet, I cannot find a way to support him.

I do not want to vote for a republican, (I never have in my life and do not want to start now), but unless someone can list out his accomplishments, I may be forced to.

Therefore, all Obama supporters PLEASE tell me what he has done...please give specifics, because I am not finding any. I know I am not alone, as nearly half of all democrats, as evidenced by the polls, are still not supporting him.

I am so afraid that this fall will be a repeat of 1988, 2000, and 2004....the candidate looked so good in the spring, just to collapse by November.

This is really a serious matter...we cannot afford another loss to the republican machine.
Bush should not just skip the opening ceremonies, but also withdraw from the Synchronized Swimming Event he was competing in with Tony Blair!
hillary confronting the chinese parliment helped lead to the end of systematic murder of infant chinese girls. Michael (Sent Monday, April 07, 2008 1:44 PM):

Oh yes Michael. The Chinese mended their ways because Hillary asked them too. And now they will give Tibet their independence because Hillary has asked them too. Have anymore good ones you wish to share. They are quite funny.
Let's see... How do I divert everyone's attention.. get their minds OFF the fact that Bill gets millions of dollars just for "speaking" (yeah, that's the ticket -- speaking engagements!), and off the whole Penn NAFTA/Colombia fiasco, and off the fact that I keep coming up with stories that only I believe are true?   I KNOW!!  I'll call for a boycott of  the opening ceremony!  That should distract everyone.  Unless they figure out that I'm a bit late in doing so, since everyone has already been suggesting to Bush that he not attend the opening ceremonies.

For the first time ever, I agree with Clinton.  The reason we're so big on going is that some U.S. comanies will get rich off this spectacle.  Besides blowing off the Tibetans, we're forgetting the thousands murdered in Tienanmin Square. But who care, as long as someone's making a buck!  And besides, since China owns what's left of our economy, we HAVE to brown-nose our new masters.
Politics should be left out of the Olympics. There should not be a boycott,
on the other hand Bush's appearance injects politics,
on the other other hand I do want to see him booed by the whole world.
Don't ruin these athletes' lives. If Clinton wants to condemn China, she ought to push for all US athletes to boycott both opening and closing ceremonies and every single medal ceremony. Those ceremonies are the politics in the Olympics. The rest has nothing to do with politics.

What will the world think about China when no one shows up at a medal ceremony? If the entire Olympics are boycotted, they will fade from the American scene as a protest. Don't forget that the Moscow Olympics weren't even televised here.
Oh Senator Clinton do not go there!
We must show our proper respect to the LARGEST COMMUSIST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!
Give Bush to them he can check for lead paint in toys and be useful for a change!
Hillary will never be re-elected, or elected for any office in the future. Lastest report out of one her home towns County of westchester, contributors are no longer giving her any funds. Most of the contributions are starting to go to Obama.
