Upcoming contests: New poll, new TV ad

Posted: Tuesday, April 08, 2008 9:06 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

PENNSYLVANIA (April 22): Here’s that new Quinnipiac poll, which shows Obama within six points of Clinton, 50%-44%.

Here we go again… Obama's getting big-time financial help from some of his supporting unions. SEIU is going in with an ad buy of just under a million dollars. Of course, SEIU jumped in on Obama's behalf in both Ohio and Texas. *** CORRECTION *** An SEIU spokesman tells First Read the money is for door-to-door canvassing, not ads.

INDIANA (May 6): Clinton is up with her first ad in the Hoosier State. It exclusively features Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) looking into the camera and offers testimony in support of the New York senator. Here’s the script:
BAYH: "America faces challenging times. We need a leader who'll fight for good jobs, change trade deals like NAFTA, cut taxes for middle-class families. Someone who's ready to be commander in chief from day one. That leader? Hillary Clinton. I've known Hillary for twenty years. She's got a spine of steel. She'll fight for our jobs, our troops, and the America we love. Strong. Seasoned. She'll always stand up for us." CLINTON: "I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message."

NORTH CAROLINA (May 6): What does it say about Obama's strength in North Carolina that both Dems running for governor (who will be sharing the ballot with Clinton AND Obama) have endorsed the Illinois senator. In fact, LG Beverly Perdue is appearing in mailers and making robo calls for Obama.

Per NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann, Michelle Obama makes her first trip to North Carolina today, with stops in Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh.  She's not hitting up the parts of the state that boast the highest military populations, like Fayetteville and the coast, but it's worth noting that -- in a state known for its high number of vets and proud flag-waving tradition -- her "proud of my country" remark comes up here a LOT. It will be interesting to see how much it is recycled in news coverage of her visit here.

MARK PENNS WIFE WAS A STAFFER FOR EAVN BAYH.SO IT NO SUPRISE THAT HE ENDORED HILLAY>
I actually think it says more that 40% of likely voters in my home state are undecided in the latest poll.  I think this puts NC very much in play, which was not the CW a few weeks ago.  I think the Obama-smitten pundits may be in for a surprise.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
We also need a leader who's top two advisors aren't actively trying to send our jobs to Colombia.
Mark Penns WIFE was Evan BAYH'S STAFFER?

Cosy...quite the "CLUB" the Clintons have...
Ok Evan, let's debate your sham of a ad....

Fight for good jobs....

That's one lie.  Hillary Clinton has lst more then 10,000 jobs in New York State.  That is fact and the facts are indisputable.

Change trade deals for NAFTA.....

Another lie.  Her husband signed th deal and she did not care about NAFTA until she was running for President and went to Ohio.

Cut taxes for middle class...

Another lie.  Bill nver cared about a middle class tax cut, why should she?  With all the billions she is proposing for this and that, there is no way she can do a middle class tax cut.

Ready to be commander in chief?

Another lie.  She proved that braving all that sniper fire in Bosnia (snickering)

Evan, cut the crap.  We all know you are angling to be the VP for Hillary, even though we all know Bill will be the VP.  Your career will be going down the john just like The Clinton' if you try this.

A spine of steel?

After crying a couple of times on world wide TV, anybody who believes that would believe the world is flat.

It will be interesting to see how the Indiana ad plays.  It did not sound very compelling reading it but may play better actually on the air.  I think Obama can battle her on NAFTA for sure.  Also, its worth noting that Bush had a spine of steel on Iraq and other issues and look where we are now.  Spine of steel is just another way of saying inflexible and stubborn.  Don't necessarily need that.

I think it says a lot that Obama is the choice for the two candidates for Governor.  The down ballot argument for Obama is one I have been making for months.

If Michelle Obama needs to clarify her remarks in a louder more visible way, then that's what she has to do.  Won't be the first time someone has to do that, won't be the last.  The fact that innocent remarks are used to justify a vote for the other guy, though, happens all the time.

Women for Obama 08
What's important here is that Obama has closed the gap to 6 points in PA! She was up double digits a few weeks ago! If she truly was THE candidate, as her supporters seem to think (John Doe, HP Boston), then WHY can't she win big in ANY state and blow Obama away? She had name recongition from the get-go and he was an "unknown" junior senator from Illinois. Why is he beating her in delegates and the popular vote? BECAUSE people are tired of "politics as usual" and want to give him a chance! Go Senator. Win in PA and end Hillary's struggle! Yes We Can!

Ya right.
Bayh, Strickland along with Rendell support Hillary even though one of her closest advisers has been working tirelessly as an advocate for the folks that employ death squads as a means of controlling organized labor.
So much for "rust belt" democrats and their support for labor.
No wonder the UAW is at odds with Michigan governor Jennifer Stenholm.  ANOTHER Hillary supporter.
With friends like these no wonder labor is having so many problems.
All the while knuckleheads like the president of the Machinists & Aerospace Workers and the AFL-CIO either is roaring their approval at the pro death squad tactics of Hillary's close adviser and former chief strategist, Mark Penn or they are sitting on their hands.
At least we now can understand WHY these folks have felt compelled to remain silent.
They are sacred of being targeted by these right wing Columbian anti labor death squad friends of the Bill Clinton administration and Hillary's closest advisers.
I have never voted republican in my life but if Obama wins the Democrat nomination I will vote for McCain.

Can we stop Obama from being elected in November?

YES WE CAN

John Doe (Sent Monday, April 07, 2008 10:16 PM)

You bet we can!

NO Obama!
The repukes will smash Obama in the GE!
We will help!
YES WE CAN!

Hillary opposed NAFTA ?

Not while Bill was President, not while she ran for the Senate (both times), not while she served in the Senate.

It is no more credible than sniper fire in Bosnia.

A fighter ?

She has been "fighting" to get the Clinton years at the White House papers out of the archives ... but to no avail.
I question the idea of having a spine of steel; it bends very little.  That could be the reason why Mark Penn hasn't really left.  How unbending unyeilding to a proper change without lots of heat and pressure!

North Carolina's candidates for governor both supporting Obama?  Really that does say alot.  These two candidates believe that he is going to do well and that he could get the state something no matter who wins.
The people of this country is moulding all kinds of politician's. Now the time has come for every citizen's need to read different news papers regularly and listen to different channels to evaluate a candidate. The press and TV are very biased to a particular candidate. Look into all facts like lying, dishonesty, accumulation of wealth, thier staffs connections with lobbying firms, untrue stories given to public, family dynasty etc to judge a candidate. Do not carried away by all kind of Ad.Let us elect a credible president who works for the poor people of this country. Remember your voting power can decide the future of this country.
A spine of steel? It makes her sound like she'll never be flexible or willing to negotiate with anyone, which sounds like gridlock to me. We don't need that a fighter who backs everyone into a corner until she gets her way; we need someone who will work with others to bring our country together.

I could care less what the polls say. The fact will never change. He cannot carry Florida, Ohio and possibly Pennsylvania and Michigan in a General Election and the dems lose! How come you never talk about this? You are the "Political Experts". And as you know, sit their withyour map on Tuesday night in November telling us to watch for these states to turn blue or red. Well with Obama as the nominee, they turn RED. That meand we lose! And it will be your fault, as your reporting is so biased it is almost impossible to watch for the rest of the entire American population that is not voting for Obama! Please do your jobs and report fair and accurate. And when you continually show one candidate in a positive light and the others ina negative light, you are not! You wil lose this race in November for the Democrats.
Barack is closing in Pa., just as we believed he would.

His bus tour was a terrific success, and he will be back. In addition, there is still lots of time for Pennsylvanians to ponder the nasty's in the Clinton tax returns, the Mark Penn scandal, and the growing Clinton 'trust' issue. The polls may swing even better for Obama by April 22nd.

Pulling for Obama '08
Evan Bayh is a good civil servant regardless of living off of his fathers coattails. Michelle Obama can proudly go to Fayetville since my 82nd Airborne brothers would know that her husband Barack Obama has supported our returning veterans in lots of ways and has authored important legislation to give us a better deal.  He also did not and does not support this wrong war in the wrong place for the wrong reasons that has cost us 4000+ of my comrades and now a trillion dollars.  Anyone who doubts the cost of this war please vist the local Veterans Hospital and see how many of us are there paralyzed, missing limbs or suffering from a plethora of mental conditions.  Listen to Senator McWar and General Petraus is you choose to America but those of us who have actually waged this war know the truth here on the ground.   Go see Stop Loss or any of the other movies showing you the truth of our situation in theatre.

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA a man with intellect and integrity plus some judgment for a CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN.
No one has a worse integrity level, honesty level, trust level in political history...including "W", than the Clintons. We need MUCH better than her. Obama may not have all of the experience that I would want, but she has NONE. But boy, can she ever dodge Bosnian bullets.

It still shocks me how people would say I’ll vote for McCain instead of OBAMA or Billary; Where is your loyalty to ending Bushism?????? It's like saying well my candidates loss let me turn the gun on myself? Wake up America, wake up Democrats!!!! We need to unite, and the sad thing is your candidate Billary, once it is inevitable that they can't win will turn around and say how Obama will be a great President and they support him, POLITICS 101.

Its 3AM and Billary is calling Obama to concede the nomination!!!!!!

Si Se Puede!

In case you have forgotten, the Clinton years were categorized by overwhelming peace and properity.  Bravo Hillary for trying to continue in this vein. The only statistic that didn't improve during Bill's presidency was perhaps Ronald Reagan's I.Q.

I will only vote for Hillary in November, never Saint Barack of the Inspired.
H P Boston,

Do you honestly think that Hillary has a better chance in the GE than Obama?  Do you have even the slightest clue what you're talking about?

There's a ton of republicans out there that aren't thrilled with their nominee this year.  Many social conservatives will just be staying home this November.  Nominating the incredibly polarizing Hillary Clinton is about the only good reason for them to go out and vote.  If she's on that ballot, they'll show up for McCain.  She is hated by the right that much.  She is that polarizing.

To suggest that McCain would do better against Obama than Clinton is sheer lunacy IMO.  I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would think that.
JT in Nashville...sorry to burst your bubble about 40% undecided in North Carolina, but two things you need to know.  First, the Charlotte Observer did that poll and they are notorious for having high undecideds in their polls...folks just don't like to answer newspaper polls here.  Second, in that poll, it says 59% of African Americans support Obama and just 7% support Clinton.  That leaves 34% undecided...really?  Does anyone believe that only 59% of blacks in NC support Obama based on what's been going on in other states?  Obama's lead is 9 points now, but add in another standard 20 to 30% of the black vote and his lead is much higher.  AND by the way, another very recent poll has him up by 23% in NC, so don't get your hopes up too high for any surprise.  Not going to happen.
HP, Boston & John Doe sound like a couple of Nader supporters hoping for a replay of 2000 when they elected dubya.
At least this time they are not hiding behind some other empty slogan.
They just cannot wait to join Roberts, Scalia, Thomas & Alito in another refrain of "Toss the women a hangar".
Hillary is a liar and full of deceptions. The truth is when Hillary was faced with Senator Obama being the front runner she elected to use Rev. Wright against him. It's her way of attempting to tear down the only one of the three presidental candidates that opposeed the Bush war from the beginning. The proof is in the pudding that Hillary is involved in a fraud case that she tried so hard to get the judge to throw out but he refuse to let Hillary off easy. So that's  still pending. So how can american's trust a liar from day one. Clinton's only want what they want "Power" and will do anything to take control to continue the "NEW WORLD ORDER". Dam the middle class
the writing is on the wall. Only two class of people "RICH" or "POOR" NEW WORLD ORDER. That's why all the middle class is losing their homes and jobs. Do you see the Clinton's losing anything? No! they are still collecting millions and still brain washing the poor and middle class they care about you and in reality laughing behind close doors we got the dummies. They don't have the slightless dream we will be controlling their life poor get poorer and the richer get it all. We got them!!!!  So wake people and read about the "NEW WORLD ORDER" The BUSHES AND CLINTON"S are part of that order that's why she Hillary is fighting so hard not to lose to continue as a ruler.
So she will go to any length to conquer and destroy.
I will vote for Obama Hussin when he starts acting like a true American.John Wayne would be ashamed of any man who will not wear a flag on his lapel or his wife is just know proud to be a American. Wake up NC
Tom in TN - it's actually Jennifer Granholm, not Stenholm.  Not that I am a big supporter of hers, just wanted to make that correction.
Polls in NC show Obama's lead increasing.  Polls in PA show Obama catching up. It will be effectively over on May 6.
To suggest that McCain would do better against Obama than Clinton is sheer lunacy IMO.  I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would think that.
******
Tim in Albany, actually, it's pretty easy to figure. Barry has no backbone. He has lack of character and judgement. He lies, embellishes. He won't disavow Irreverent Wright; he won't disawow talk show host who called McCain warmonger but instead comes out with one of his typical mealy-mouthed statements. Who takes their children to a church where it is acceptable for the minister to swear and make sexual gyrations in the pulpit? What US Senator goes to a church and as a congregant swears his first allegiance to Africa?. What person defends a hate-mongering person lke Wright but throws  his own grandmother under the bus as a "typical white person"? What US Senator is friends with the likes of Wm Ayers who bombed the Capital, the Pentagon and NY Police HQ? List goes on and on. Maybe, when the Kooolaid wears off, you'll be able to "figure" it out.
I wonder if pmc is aware of the well-documented (Boston Globe) fact that hundreds of thousands of Texas and Ohio Republicans voted on March 4th for Clinton.  As one Texas Republican put it: "It's as simple as this: I don't think McCain can beat Obama."
For Dean in Waterbury, CT (and others):   Can we please stop living in the past?  The Clinton's were in the White House in the 90's -- almost a decade ago.  Why would you want to go backward?  What makes you think that worked 10 yrs ago -- is going to work now?  While you are reminiscing about how wonderful things were -- the future and all it brings is staring us in the face!!!  I don't want to go backward -- I want to go forward -- and I don't think Clinton has the faintest idea of how to do that -- I really don't.  She's too mired in the "good old 90"s" -- please!!And if I'm not mistaken -- wasn't Bill Clinton's stump song  "Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow"?  It doesn't say, "Don't Stop Thinking about the 90's"!!---- just more Clinton speak -- about as sincere as one of Sen Clinton's stump speeches.Spare us all!!Obama '08
