Clinton, Obama play nice in remarks

Posted: Tuesday, April 08, 2008 2:42 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Abby Livingston
Addressing the Communication Workers of America, a union that has yet to endorse a Democratic nominee, neither Obama nor Clinton seemed especially anxious to throw an elbow at the other this morning.

There were the usual jabs -- like when Clinton knocked Obama on health care or Obama repeated his “war that never should have been authorized” veiled shot at Clinton’s 2002 Iraq war authorization vote. Obama also added a seemingly innocuous statement about the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, declaring his opposition “because when organizing workers puts an organizer's life at risk, as it does in Colombia, it makes a mockery of our labor protections.” Amid the context of the Mark Penn controversy, ears did perk up.

But generally speaking, in front of mixed company, both candidates played nice, saving their more fiery rhetoric for McCain and the Republicans. Hitting the Bush Administration, Obama declared, “We've got news for White House, we've got news for America. It's not the Department of Management, it's the Department of Labor, and we are here to take it back!”

The real story of the morning, however, might have been that although Clinton received a warm reception and was greeted with a homemade sign posted on the wall -- which said, “I like Obama, but I’m Voting For Chelsea’s Moma!” -- the crowd was in Obama’s corner. His red meat Bush Administration criticisms and labor affirmations drew standing ovations, cheers, and whistles.

Hillary shouldn't have to "fire" Mark Penn.  She believes everything that he stands for.  The Unions that still support her should be ashamed of themselves.  It has been recently reported that there is another person in the Clinton campaign who has been paid by the Colombians [Gold Service International is the name of the Colombian company] and this agent was given $800,000 instead of Penn's $300,000.  This person was paid this $800,000 to give pro-Colombian free trade speeches and was even given the use of the Colombian president's private jet to aid in his travel.  This staff member even helped to negotiate a Canadian oil deal in Colombia as well.  As an extra token of satisfaction, the agent was also given $31 million to invest into his estate (foundation).  This agent's name is Bill Clinton.  Bubba won't be "fired" either so we should know that Penn and Wolfson are towing the company line and this is just business as usual in the Clinton campaign.  The chairpersons of these unions who are so willing to fall on their swords for Sen. Clinton need to resign or be voted out immediately.
I don't know which is sadder --

~ the folks who think that if their candidate isn't the nominee, then they'll vote for McCain or stay home.  How self defeating and spiteful is that?

~ or the swift boaters who will actually run the character assassination campaigns for the betterment of the rich (and the poor get poorer)

~ or the idiots who will believe that the swift boaters have their best interests at heart (not!)

~ or the idiots who think that voting against 'gay marriage' and against 'abortion rights' will put food on the table -- once again (not!).

The dumbing down of America is stunning.

Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
HP Boston: Your team is at home for opening day. They have received their World Series rings. The championship flag is up.

Be excited. Enjoy the afternoon.
Speaking of Rasputin (were we?)...

There was a foghorn on here a few months ago who dominated the  web waves with facts and figures "proving" Hillary's indubitable dominance of the primaries... every day for weeks.

Even then, some of us knew his real leader was not the Hillary, but was the Mark (Penn, as in coming soon to a pen-itentiary near you!).  The mark of Penn was his sheer adoration of numbers...

That's Burson-Marsteller for you.  All about padding resumes, all about the past (experience. har. har.), all in the numbers... All about creative prevarication for only 25 grand a day.  American capitalism at its most grotesque.

Speaking of polls, our friend here finally took his marble and went home after I teased him a bit...  but he loved to quote Rasmussen (as if we couldn't Google Rasmussen for ourselves in 3 seconds or less).

Wonder what the wonder boys think about Rasmussen now with Hillary down 11 and fading like Memphis as the clock runs out?

Love to hear from any of you who were crowing so loud before the counting began...

QueenBee

I voted for Obama.  I just took your advice and had my head examined.

I concluded after having my head examined, that I was right to vote for Obama.  I will do it again in the general election in November.  Thank you for your concern for my well being.

Speaking of past associations, maybe you should examine the people that the Clintons have associated with in the past.  They are easy to find.  Just visit your local prison.

On the subject of drug use, didn't Bubba admit to some drug use during his youth?  Of course, he didn't inhale did he?  Right, and he did not have sexual relations with that woman . . . . . Miss Lewinsky.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
yeah... I can see how people think Obama is a racist... he's just as much white as he is black...

I guess he can't connect with white people because he just doesn't understand the culture!

For those of you trying to spin the race card, decease and desist, you're really starting to show true ignorance.
Unfortunately First READ has officially endorse Hillary Clinton, evidence can be seen as Todd and its comrades refuse to publish the new endorsements Barack Obama received this weekend in North Dakota and the fact that they do not acknowledge Obama's real pledged delegate lead of 1,419 and not 1,416 as they claim....

Mark Thieme:  We all know that Van is never coming back along with Psychic Mary and those other hacks.  I actually would like to see Van's polls now.  Now we have a brand new set of hacks but I'm sure they'll be gone right after NC votes.
He's utterly unelectable...because of his association with racists like Rev Wright, his past cocaine use, and his unpatriotic wife. TheQueenBee (Sent Tuesday, April 08, 2008 2:52 PM):

So often we hear voters make the statement "sure wish we had a better choice of Presidential candidates to represent us". Reading TheQueenBee's comment above makes one wonder if the candidates ever remark "sure wish we had a better choice of voters to represent".
Oh Yes!

There may be some Dems, Repubs, and even Nadarites, that are not for Senator Obama. We who support him are not so drunk with kool-aid as to ever have believed he would win the nomination, or Presidency by a unamimous vote. Really. No kidding.

However, we do believe there are enough Dems, Repubs, and Indy's who will elect him Commander In Chief when he is nominated by the Democratic party.

Though employed by many throughout the past, and present election cycles, since when is breathing threats, and an unwillingness to acceppt the will of the majority, whether of votes, or delegates a stellar example of American patriotism? Quite the contrary. Those of you ranting more often, the loudest, and with the most venom are the worst offenders of that which you decry. You are pretenders to love Democracy.

But that's ok. It won't take every American to pull this country out of the hell, or ditch as Barack has called it, that Bush has brought us to. Rather, those who come willingly will suffice. What matters is that all of America will benefit for the vision and effort put forth my President Obama, and those of us who will aide him in his awesome task. We have been given the wonders of Moses, the strength of Sampson, and the miracles of Jesus. We will triumph. You will too.

Pulling for Obama '08
Speaking of polls:
Rasmussen Markets data now gives Obama an 87.1% chance to win the Democratic nomination.

Rasputin isn't gone. He is only hiding behind the door. Sub-prime Maggie stated Burson-Marsteller will still be polling and Penn will provide advice. Continuing to provide service for a fee doesn't sound like "gone".

This is just another example of Hillary's approach to trust, integrity, honesty and character.
A "warm" welcome versus standing ovations, cheers and whistles..hmmmm...perhaps PA IS getting the message and paying attention to the Mark Penn, Wolfson, Bill Clinton saga and are FINALLY saying "Enough is enough!" Go Obama '08.....cut the gap even more and beat her in PA.
And one more thing- If you can't run an effective primary campaign, how would you run an effective general election campaign?? How would you manage a nation??

She can't effectively research her stories, pay her bills, or fire Penn? That's not leadership.

Obama 08
Hillary and Barack can still highlight their different and common stands without going at eachother
Just as the candidates are playing nice so too must the bloggers. We must elect a democrat to the white house in November even if that means voting for the other candidate. What is at stake beside Iraq is the majority in the Supreme court for the next 20 years or more. The conservatives need only one more vote to sanction the consept of a unitary presidency. This theory makes the president above the law as long as he is in his role of commander in cheif. It make him DICTATOR. Already four of the nine justices support this theory. We cannot elect McCain to the presidency and allow him to appoint the deciding vote.

Vote Democratic 08
As a former member of the UAW I am in full support of the only pro-union candidate: Barack Obama.

Obama '08
Obama might win the nomination but will be handily beaten by McCain in November. I hope when the idiotic left of the DNC finally hands the nomination to Obama, (after screwing up MI and FL), then I hope, pray that this will finally atone for slavery and we never have to hear about it again. But, I doubt it.
Perhaps the union should have asked Senator Clinton about former President Clinton's involvement with the Colombian government concerning trade.

She didn't fire Penn and she can't fire Bill. Wake up and smell the Colombian coffee!

OooooooooooooooooooooH! That bee Just Got OWNED!!!!! Nice one. I will put that in  my arsenal, with your permision, my good man.

Yea, Bee, What he said. I sure wish you clinton worshippers would just quit being closet Obama supporters and come out already! :)
For people who question Obama’s experience: Obama does not have a long list of accomplishments, just like HRC, who too has virtually no accomplishments... This is why Governors tend to do better in general elections, because they have real executive experience. And for us Obama feelgoods, it is comforting to know that he has about the same amount or experience as Abraham Lincon did when he became the US president, but he also had a vision just like Obama has but HRC does not. With Clinton and McCain it will be politics as usual in DC, but with Obama, hopefully, we will have a change in the form of reconciliation, domestically as well as internationally. Hope I was helpful…
C A from Tuscaloosa -
I am in Birmingham and you make me ashamed!  Here I thought we as a state had risen above our old associations with being racist (and we were indeed), and you comment with such a narrow view.  My guess is, the sum of what you know about Rev. Wright & Barack is, probably what you have heard, not what you know/read. Open your mind to forward thinking and catch up with the rest of us.
Right now, I wish I had a better choice of neighbors to the west of me!
In the last month or so, Chelsea has been speaking more and more at town hall meetings. Now we know why Hillary had her stand there mute for so long, Chelsea really doesn't have anything much to say.
Mark Penn & Colombia--Hillary honestly didn't know? The Clintons didn't have money to do a background check?
How Hillary can say anything about trade boggles the mind, her BFF Penn and husband both lobby and support CAFTA, this woman speaks out of both sides of her mouth. She must be "sleep" deprived again, huh. Because what she says and the people who suround her are very different. Maybe she should try crying again, her husband and her seem to be crying all the way to the bank.
Re: Mark Penn

It seems to me that any other person or firm with such an obvious conflict of interest would have been fired.  Penn has been with the Clintons since before Bill's second term.  Perhaps they "can't" fire him because he "knows too much."
If Hillary were President, do we really believe that Bill will have no influence over trade?  Pleeeeease.  He's so deep into the pockets of Columbia.....I think the Unions realize this.

Obama '08
Hillary was great on substance as usual...

Obama was better on style, as usual....

I wonder if well-delivered speeches will bring stability to Iraq??
You seem to miss one important point though.  Penn is credited for the kitchen sink strategy that worked so well for Senator Clinton in Texas and Ohio.  I would imagine that the same was on the wait for the crucial last three days before PA to be resurrected!  It is true that the "soft" Hillary seemed to connect with voters in New Hampshire, but  is this the "real" Clinton?  If the answer is no, then any other strategy to "humanize" the candidate would have come to an end eventually due to conflicting  inclinations.  Shouldn't we then give credit where it is due?
Yes we can elect Barack Obama.  Here in Illinois, Obama  has brought people together, he is very popular also with downstate Republicans. Yes we can change our country.
everything i've read here is recycling of media rhetoric...sadly

except maybe this:

it made so much sense i thought it should be said again...
The amount of hate and vitirol that I have read on these blogs is amazing. I was raised in a Democratic house, my mother and father were Union members. I was tought that the GOP were the bad guys. But i see Randi Rhodes (an Obama supporter) Use totaly over the top anger for Clinton and Clinton supporters on the blogs do the same. I cannot believe it, really i cant.
People all over the country shuld know that after Hillary clinton carpetbagged her way into the New York senate, she has done little to nothing for New York citizens. She promised jobs for upstate - they're in worse shape now than they ever were. She's done nothing for us here on Long Island. She is divisive, deceitful and selfish, only interested in her own goals......no more lies, "misspeaking," lapses in memory......go Obama for a fresh start.
