First thoughts: Obama to opt out?

*** Is Obama going to opt out? Is Obama setting up the rationale to NOT take public financing in the general election? Here he is at a fundraiser last night, per NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan: "We have created a parallel public financing system where the American people decide if they want to support a campaign they can get on the Internet and finance it, and they will have as much access and influence over the course and direction of our campaign that has traditionally reserved for the wealthy and the powerful.” While forgoing public financing would be a PR embarrassment for the campaign -- an increasingly aggressive McCain/RNC press shop will make sure of it -- are the Obama folks realizing that they will HAVE to do this? After all, the DNC isn’t going to have that much money to spend (at least compared with the RNC), and Democratic donors who would ordinarily finance independent 527s probably believe that Obama -- if he’s the nominee -- will have plenty of money. As Politico's Ben Smith reported earlier this week, there are fundraising issues already for some of these indie groups. What will Obama do? Looks like we may already know the answer.

*** A Clinton house divided: So Bill Clinton, it turns out, supports the Colombian free trade agreement that his wife opposes. In fact, according to our count, this is at least the fourth policy disagreement Bill and Hillary have had -- Colombia, NAFTA, whether to boycott the opening Olympics ceremony, and torture (as we found out at the September debate at Dartmouth). "Like other married couples who disagree on issues from time to time, she disagrees with her husband,” Clinton spokesman Jay Carson told the AP, regarding Bill’s support for the Colombian deal. Those of us who are married know that Jay is right: Married couples can disagree on almost anything, including policy. But then again, not every spouse is Bill Clinton, a former president who would be his wife’s most important adviser and confidante if she wins the White House. His positions on issues -- even when they disagree -- do matter, especially when groups supporting one side give him $800,000 in speaking fees

*** Embracing their differences: Differences with Bill, in fact, should have been a badge of honor for Hillary at some point in this campaign. Perhaps the strategy was to showcase her "Sister Souljah" moments with her husband during the general, because Dem primary voters were happy with Bill's years in the White House. Hindsight indicates that maybe she should have bragged about these policy differences a lot sooner so she could be her own candidate sooner. Eight years ago, George W. Bush had the luxury of being forced to prove his differences with his former presidential father in the primary, while hugging him in the general (as he did a bit).

*** The Keystone downpayment: Both Dem campaigns are airing a number of new TV ads in Pennsylvania (nine new ones just yesterday). Indeed, per TV ad tracker Evan Tracey, Obama is spending $300,000 a day in the state. The sheer volume is a reminder that both campaigns realize there really isn't any way to waste money on the air in this state. Why? Because it's a downpayment for the fall campaign. Democrats, obviously, are divided on whether this elongated primary season is good for their party. But in the case of being able to introduce themselves to voters in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, it has been a positive. Most of the TV ads are basically positives for both of them, meaning it would be a shock if both candidates didn't see a polling benefit in match-ups with McCain in this state over the next few weeks.

*** A North Carolina blowout? Seriously, the two Dem gubernatorial candidates in North Carolina are fighting over who supports Obama more. In fact, one candidate (Richard Moore) is using paid advertising to tout his Obama support. Maybe we should stop pretending North Carolina is going to be competitive; it's not. The problem now for Clinton is what will the delegate count and popular vote count look like after May 6 if North Carolina is a blowout for Obama -- and if Clinton wins narrowly in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Will Obama net more delegates out of North Carolina than Clinton nets out of Pennsylvania and Indiana combined (if she wins them both)? Will Obama's popular vote lead actually grow after North Carolina, because his win there is bigger than hypothetical combined Clinton victories in PA and IN? This is the dilemma for Clinton's campaign in the Tar Heel State. It may be unwinnable, but campaigning seriously in the state and attempting to close the gap is an absolute must because of the state's potential effect on delegates and total votes.

*** Politics means you always have to say you're sorry: Looking back on the presidential contest, five of most important themes/storylines have been (so far) race and gender, Iraq, the economy, the fundraising, and the role of the superdelegates. If you were to add a sixth, it might have to be the apology. As we've noted before, there have been a plethora of apologies this cycle -- from Edwards (for his 2002 war vote), Bob Johnson and Billy Shaheen (for references to Obama's teenage drug use), Samantha Power (for her "monster" comment), and the list goes on and on. Well, you can now add one more to the list: Obama supporter Jay Rockefeller, for saying that McCain’s days as a Navy pilot didn’t prepare him for an understanding of everyday issues. “McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues.” When’s the next apology…?

*** Down the ballot: Yesterday, Schumer and Van Hollen, the respective heads of the Dem Senate and House campaign committees, held an expectations-setting sort of briefing yesterday. Schumer flexed his targeting muscles a bit tossing out long-shot pickup after long-shot pickup. There’s clearly a tilted playing field for the Senate favoring the Dems. In fact, anything less than a four-seat pickup (think VA, NH, CO, and NM, where the Dems are currently favored in all four races) will be considered a bad year. (It is worth noting that Dems might not be as bullish on OR, ME, and MN as they were months ago…) NRSC Chair John Ensign can declare "victory" if he limit losses to three seats. As for the House side, Van Hollen, unlike Schumer, did his best to lower expectations -- by passing out a chart reminding reporters that the party that has a big mid-term win usually sees themselves LOSING seats the following cycle, not gaining them. Of course, with so many GOP retirements, it's hard to imagine how the Dems don't pickup a minimum of five to 10 seats. Anything less would be considered a GOP success.

*** On the trail: After their day on Capitol Hill yesterday, Clinton stumps in Pittsburgh and then heads to her Elton John fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall in New York; McCain attends a town hall in Westport, CT before raising money in Greenwich, CT; and Obama is in Pennsylvania, where he stumps in Malvern and Levittown, before heading to South Bend, IN.

Of course Obama shouldn't take public financing.  He's already got it--the million+ ordinary Americans who have donated to his campaign, the average donation being $109.  Obama is a wonderful blend of free-market capitalism and equal opportunity.  I would gather he had no idea just how much his message would resonate.  He knew he'd raise some money, but who really could predict the windfall? He originally wanted public financing to break the hold big businesses and lobbyist have on elections.  He did that the old fashioned way--he earned it. I think it incredibly ironic that McCain, who panders to the ultra conservative laisse fair capitalist will need to take public financing, while Obama, who these same people accuse of being a socialist, will use the free market (his product being his message) to raise the money needed to run a successful presidential campaign.
It seems words only matter when it suits Obama.

Did he make the promise or not.  There are only two possible answers.
WHERE IS " WALDO "......I MEAN MICHELLE OBAMA.
Where are the reporters who are covering the michelle obama stump speeches...... oh I forget, the media wants the " HOLY ONE " obama to be elected so covering Bill Clinton bathroom breaks might turn up some sh#t they can use to help push the inexperience, race baiter, obama.

Its a good thing the presidency can't be bought. Outspending Hillary 3 to 1 or 5 to 1, obama will lose in Pennsylvania by double digits.

While Hillary Clinton is campaigning, she makes stops at the Leno and Ellen show, but MSNBC and FIRST READ criticize her by calling it a LIKEABILITY TOUR, but when "THE HOLY ONE" barack obama does his bowling stops and hardball college stops "HIS MAJESTY" obama is said to be connecting with the working class and regular folks. C'mon guys get back to honest and fair journalism.

This is the second time in two weeks Audrea Mitchell try to align and slime Hillary with video she dug up in the basement of msnbc and try to get a "GOTCHA" moment she could use to give barack ? obama another helping hand from the msnbc news team......the first one was the Ronald Reagan pony story and now the pastor story.......NICE TRY andrea but smart Americans saw that for what it was ...... BUNKUM.

I'm just wondering does MSNBC sit in a smoke filled back room with the barack obama campaign and say to themselves "LETS SEE WHAT STORY OR SLIME WE CAN COME  UP WITH TO BRING DOWN HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON AND ELEVATE barack ? obama".... Because how would you explain these slime stories like the Mark Penn columbian story and the andrea mitchell pastor story.

I'm wondering if the obama insult to Mccain will get any legs in the media........ I doubt it.
If there is a bigger dunce in NY then Hillary, it's Schumer. Then NY-ers have Spitzer on top of these two nitwit Senators. Just what in the world are NY-ers thinking when they get in the voting booth?

Kyle, you obviously haven't seen the empty shirts the GOP has been putting up against Schumer, Clinton and Spitzer in this state...I can't even remember who any of them were running against in their last elections.
I really don't care whether Obama opts out of public financing or not. If the Democratic nomination goes all the way 'til Labor Day, Obama could actually take the public financing--$84 million for September, October and the first part of November isn't too shabby.

McCain is sounding more and more like a two-year-old brat who whines about EVERYTHING--his surrogate called me a warmonger (which, in truth, he is); his surrogate said I dropped bombs (which, in truth, he did); Obama said he would take public financing (who cares?). McCain is trying to drown Obama in a sea of gnats. Doesn't McCain have anything substantive to complain about?
I think it would be a PR embarassment if he DID NOT opt out after his fund raising record. If Obama stopped doing what he's been doing it wouldn't be smart.  He has raised historical amounts of money all from small donors.  The small donors giving to his campaign ARE the public. The current public funding system is too full of bugs and lopholes ot be taken seriously at this point to be trusted.
Do "the Clintons" believe in anything, or is everything relative? I'm starting to wonder . . .
McCain should apologize for the racist remark the ex-military but then the crowd applauded, so we know they agreed.  Graham's remark only confirms the true meaning, he was doing damage control.

Isn't it interesting that Tiger and Obama, given every reason to have issues with whites, who perform with grace and style still rise above the racist rhetoric.

Chris Matthews saw it but distanced himself as he is now afraid of upsetting Hillary - come on Chris - play hardball!  What do you care if she doesn't do your show?
SUSA Obama +10.  Seems way less than the 20-25% other polls are predicting.  Since SUSA has been the most accurate polling agency this year, I think that rumors of a blowout may be a bit premature.
hey Bill Jones,

how about we apply that same theory (fly or die) to health care and the housing crisis?

enough with the double standards already, folks.
1st: Senator Obama should use the advantage he has with fund raising in the general election.

2nd: Does anyone believe that Hillary does not support CAFTA?

As a native North Carolinian "ex-patriate" now living in NY, I am *immensely* proud of my home state for being poised to deliver the long-awaited knock-out punch to Hil Monster.  This soap opera/charade has gone on too long, and only gives the GOP lots to crow about when this is the year for them to be shaking in their boots.  Let's unify our party once again, behind the real candidate of change who the GOP is secretly terrified of.  They'd LOVE to have Hillary to kick around; we don't have to give them that gift.

C'mon Tar Heels, lead the way!!
Following rules and Clinton(s) should never come out of any persons mouth, she makes her own rules as things go along, she's losing and now cries the blues, the press is hard on her and ect. ect., stop your crying, it's not going to happen this time around, the final straw for me was the Penn/ Colombia issue, I'm tired of her *rap....
Publicly financed by the American voter is Public financing.Spin away all you pundit's like Hp, brother odder,J.Merle & van(wherever you are).We Barack supporter's will make sure he is very well financed for Anything.

Pennsylvania voter's are waking up from the Clinton Toxic kool-aid finally.Clinton's cover has been Blown wide open & there's No closing it.NaNaNaNa, Hey, Hey,Hey, Goodbye!LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!
This is what the hillbillys do best, one says one thing about the trade agreement with the colombians*800,000 paid to the hillbillys*while the Wolfsen,Ickey, Penn all where involved with and paid by the colombians to help pass the free trade agreement .As co-presidents how can Hill say that she is againest it when it seems like most of her campaign staff has been working on this. How anyone can belive that they won't spin this .Come on people, how after all the lies that they have told just in the last couple of weeks that they are not all in on this. They are the poster children for union busting free trade.People in Pennsylvania,N.Carolina,Indaina ,how can you support a campaign that sends your jobs oversees? The time is now to stop all the b.s.and put people like this out of politics for good!
I see that Hillary and Bill share the same tax returns, so what Bill makes is what Hill makes.  So the Colombian government paying Bill $800,000 for supporting the Colombian free trade agreement is the same as Hillary supporting it because she had to know why he got that money.  If she disagreed with supporting the Colombia free trade agreement why did she go along with Bill being paid $800,000 from the Colombian government.  Anybody who says that Hillary did not know about this money is folling themselves.
Considering the majority of donations were 100 dollars or less and came from the "people", Obama has nothing to fear if he opts out.  The people are behind him not the lobbyists.
I also agree with Pat from NYC.  McCain is not a war hero for dropping bombs or advocating an illegal and immoral war in an Asian country.  "War Hero" is becoming somewhat of an oxymoron in the context of illegal invasions that kill and torture millions.
That's a mix of Obama bias and a gender bias, too. He's buying the election as it is.  There should be a cap on spending.
Oh yeah, that's right - a PROMISE is just words.  I think Mr. Obama said that words matter... didn't he??

How many other promises do you think he intends to keep?  The one's to the voters?? Ha!  He'll only fulfill the promises he had to make to get the support of folks like John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and Gov. Richardson - to name just a few that we know about.  There are others lurking - be careful of what you wish for...

He is not the great CHANGE master he is portraying himself to be.  People see in him what they would like to believe is real and he's playing them like a fiddle.

HILLARY '08!! The REAL candidate for change.
Obama should opt out of public financing.  He will continue to raise lots of money why should he forgo that.  As long as we continue to support him there will be no backlash.  Who cares what McShame says or the right wing says.  We know what we believe in.
If they both agree to follow the same rules it should not be a problem, unless your Hillary, then you just make stuff up as you go along, like Fla./Mich.
I'll never check that box again.  I dont want to give even a dollar to McCain or Clinton.  I think a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.  Obama has found a better way to publically finance a campaign so that no citizen who does not support his candidacy need spend one dime to finance it.  Why should these taxpayers who do not support Obama heve their taxes used for his campaign when hundreds of thousands of people who DO support him are willing to pay for it?     I hope ALL  campaigns are run like this in the future.  Ill never check that box again.   The people who are saying #44 will not have a big win in NC are the same who said he couldnt win Iowa.  I think May will be a very good month.  Im opening a headquarters on Ocean Park Beach.  Playeros!  Surfer Dudes! Chiquitas!
Si se puede!
