Poll: McCain makes up ground

Posted: Thursday, April 10, 2008 2:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
McCain has made up ground on both Democratic candidates, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll out today. Obama saw a big drop, as he had been leading McCain by 10 points in February but now is tied, 45%-45%. Clinton leads McCain 48%-45% -- within the 3.1% margin of error. Clinton had led McCain, 48%-43% a month ago.

In the Democratic primary contest, Obama's retains his 3-point lead over Clinton, which is unchanged at 46%-43%. But there was a lot of movement underneath the topline numbers.

"[T]he heated primary is creating divisions among the electorate -- many Clinton and Obama supporters say they would rather vote for McCain if their chosen Democrat doesn't win the nomination," the AP writes. "About a quarter of Obama supporters say they'll vote for McCain if Clinton is the Democratic nominee. About a third of Clinton supporters say they would vote for McCain if it's Obama.

"Against McCain, Obama lost ground among women -- from 57 percent in February to 47 percent in April. Obama dropped 12 points among women under 45, 14 points among suburban women and 15 points among married women. He also lost nine points or more among voters under 35, high-income households, whites, Catholics, independents, Southerners, people living in the Northeast and those with a high school education or less."

But against Clinton, Obama actually gained a net of 13 points among women while Clinton gained a net of 17 among men. And while Clinton still leads among Democrats making less than $50,000 a year, that gap has closed from 17 points to seven. Also, Obama has flipped "moderate" Democrats in his favor. A month ago, Clinton led among that group 45%-40%; Obama now leads 51%-35%.

You missed the key story line here (and I'm certain, given your crush on Sen. Obama, it was not by mistake):  POLL SHOWS CLINTON WOULD BEAT McCAIN, BUT OBAMA WOULDN'T.  Now, if you are a superdelegate, what else really matters?  And with everything that has gone Obama's way up to now, and with everything that has gone against Clinton up to now, this is truly shocking.
This just in:

John (Poppy) McCain peed on the sofa at
'The View'
My question is

which luggage is heavier?

CLINTON

Has made a number of political mistakes - totally agree with this one.

OBAMA

has made a number of mistakes that some people look at as un-patriotic/Anti-American mistakes - Only you closed minded individuals really believe this. Just because he doesn't want to wear a lapel made in China does not make him unpatriotic.

Patty you can do better than this? Can't you?

Vote Democrat regardless of the nominee is Clinton or Obama - It is about the Supreme Court
It's interesting to read all these comments; makes me wonder if any of us Americans have i.q.'s over 80.  You compare Clinton to Bush, the Obama supports now say polls don't count since Obama has dropped, some say McCain is like Bush.  All 3 are saying what they think you want to hear and don't even hesitate to tell a lie.  Our country's economies started going dowhhill over 20 yrs. ago when the research & development started dropping so much.  That's why Japanese cars are better than U.S. cars, why everything is made by a foreign country.  A good, honest, intelligent man who would be a great president does not stand a change in hell unless he's got a large machine running him and all sorts of political pacs who he is beholding to.  Too much emphasize is places on "personality and charm, good speakers".  So many people think Kennedy was great but he did nothing substantial as president.  His father was wealthy (obtained his wealth in "shady" ways) and once supported the Nazis; Edward Kennedy drove into a lake and a young women was killed afte they had been partying (without Mrs. Edward Kennedy) and while Kennedy saved himself, he left the car underwater without bring up the body. The Clintons are now very wealty; the Bush's have a son who had taken such advantage of his family's political connection and has been in many shady business deals. America will never be great again until we elect our president and congressional leaders on merit, ethics, sound judgment and without them owing allegence to no one but the voters and American people.
Did anyone notice that when McCain left his seat on the View there was a wet stain on the seat cushion?  Looks like somebody forgot to change his depends.

That happens to a lot of people that go on The View. Looking at those hags for an hour forces one to lose control over their bodily functions.
Mr Montanaro we oft times disagree and I have to admit my post have been showing a little more even we do disagree. I hope this is one of them.Out of curiosity I looked up this IPSOs poll. They are a Canadian based firm, now not being a true believer in these polls to began with I must ask.Why in the world are we now looking to the Canadian polls? Is this just a need to try and validate McCentury or Clinton or just another knock on Obama ?Here I have another poll stat for you as a Democrat I will give McCentury absolutely no vote ,even if I have to stomach voting for Hillary Clinton and yes it would be something I have to stomach.Patty from SD, Ca the answer to your burning question on the luggage question --- It would have to be the Clinton camp when even now she is finding herself having to throw Bill under the bus for his $800 thousand windfall from the Colombia NAFTA agreement and Mark Penn is not much help either. They have a list so long that my head hurts thinking that I might have to throw away my princples to vote for her if she steals this nomination. HP Boston I think that you must be a Republican pretending to like Clinton for if you think Obama is a flim flam artist then I can only imagine what you think of Hillary and all of the misspoken stories her and Billy have been telling.I will say this one more time I am waiting for someone to produce the people from Hurricane Katrina that Bill said Hillary saved during the evacuation of New Orleans. This was him stumping for her at College Station Texas just days before the Texas primary.Just like most of her stories as of late I find this one hard to swallow and possible A WE BIT SILLY if untrue.
It is UNFATHOMABLE to me that any INTELLIGENT American will vote for McCain over either Democrat.  I support Obama, and, frankly, I abhor some of the campaign dirty tricks the Clintonistas employed. That said, I WOULD vote for Hillary if she somehow nabbed the nomination.  WHY?  THe US SUPREME COURT.  THINK People!!!!!
Pat Huntington NY:

This is the kind of poll that might cause a Democrat candidate to leave a stain, eh?
It is official.  The Obama people are delusional.  McCain will hold his support no matter what.  Clinton has shown that she more consistently beats McCain than Obama does in polls, particularly those in battle ground states.  Think a light bulb would go on with the Obamamites? No, they keep trotting down on the Obama track with no riders getting on.
Of course, it is a headline about John McCain's position in the poll re AP Ipsos and when Hill was ahead of Obama in the Gallup , it was a headline. Obama has been ahead of Hill for four days in the Gallup, not shown on MSNBC or First Read. Obama also ahead of McCain in Gallup. Good thing there is no ombudsman in the US. Are you reporting the news or your views?
Sen Obama has the worst voting record, he has either voted present or has not shown up to vote and don't forget the times he said he made a mistake when voting. If he's the nominee I'm going to follow his example and stay home that day.
In other words, the Obamamites are saying we do not like this poll.  It does not say what we want to hear, therefore, we will attack it.  Obama's supporters are just as petty, whiney and temperamental as he is.  We need a woMAN to be president.
I can't believe you, Patty, sd,ca.  The sun must be
blinding you if you can't see how many lies HC has told.  She is a mess not waiting to happen, but already has

This is OLD news. See RealClearPolitics.com All the other polls have shown McCain and Obama essentially tied for over a month. No doubt the Rev. Wright affair has cost Obama, and the media (MSNBC excepted) letting slide all of McCain's unbelievable gaffes, blunders, and endorsements from certifiably insane preachers. And one clown was attacking Tiger Woods, evidently because he's part African like Obama. He got a big hug from McCain. And Repubs say they're not playing the race card.
I think these polls are pretty good at a point when they have been tearing each other down left and right.

Think about it.  Right now Clinton supporters are saying they won't vote for Obama and Obama supporters are saying they won't vote for Clinton ...so when a pollster calls...at the height of their fighting with each other... THIS is as high as he is..?!!!

That is not good for McCain if this nomination gets wrapped up soon.
As much as i like Obama, the last time we had a change candidate, we ended up with Carter. the Camp David accords were about the only good thing that came of that. Before his presidency, he had been a 1 term govenor. Anyone notice a somewhat striking similarity? No offense to Obama. I would just feel better if he had more experience, say another 6 years. His forign Policy objectives scare the livind daylights out of me as well.

And while Cinton does hae more than Obama, i think its more of an Osmosis effect from Bill. Also, as an independent, i think she is WAY too polerizing to get anything done i D.C.

McCain may be old, but my great granmother was mentally active, alert, and wise til her mid 90's. I do not think age really has a place here. I disagree with some of his policies, but i feel he is the best candidate for me.
Hillary is the most intelligent, the most experienced, and the strongest person who is running for president. God bless her. I hope and pray that she is our next president.
So 1/3 of Hillary's supporters are willing to go with the war as is.  Doesn't surprise me.  Right now I wouldn't worry about any polls with McCain v. Democrats.  That campaign hasn't even started.  However, I would like to say our country is not based on a dynasty, and 20 years of Clinton's and Bushes is enough.  Time for a change, now!

Obama 08
The Obama supporters still keep trying to make comparisons between the Democratic primaries and the general election.

How well a candidate does against their opponent in the primaries and how capable they are at winning the general election are TWO TOTALY DIFFERENT THINGS.

The Obama supporters just don't seem to get it, ever.

All they talk about is how far ahead Obama is in delegates to Clinton, how he picked up another sueperdelegates, etc.

They even try to make the argument that the reason that the polls show Obama behind McCain is because it's Clinton's fault.

They just don't get it.

But I suspect that on November 4th, they will get it then.
more and more people know the true Obama
Many voters voted Obama in the past, but many of them regret now because his pastors issue. You can take back your vote!

I am afraid that there must be a lot of women who are looking at McCain as the kindly grandfather figure who sat them on his knee just like they all fell for the same thing with Reagan. Wait until he gets heat put on him and you will hear him snarl and he won't seem so kindly.
