Carter's trip a problem for Obama?

From NBC's Libby Leist and Andrea Mitchell

The State Department has advised former President Jimmy Carter to not meet with Hamas representatives on a trip to Syria next week.

Details of Carter's schedule have not been made public, but State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters, "We have counseled the former president against such a meeting."

"US government policy is that Hamas is a terrorist organization. We don't believe that it is in the interest of our policy or in the interest of peace to have such a meeting," he added.

Carter's trip comes as an Israeli study claims Hamas is in a major military buildup -- with help from Syria and Iran. Carter already has been criticized by some Jewish groups for his past criticism of Israeli policy.

Carter's decision to meet with Hamas could have blowback for Obama. In Nigeria last week, Carter signaled his support for Obama, without officially endorsing him. Asked about that, sources close to both Obama and Carter told NBC NEWS that they are ducking a formal endorsement to avoid alienating Jewish voters critical of the former president's Middle East policies. Carter is a superdelegate and has long had rocky relations with the Clintons.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign provided NBC with a statement it released yesterday. "Senator Obama does not agree with President Carter's decision to go forward with this meeting because he does not support negotiations with Hamas until they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist, and abide by past agreements. As President, Obama will negotiate directly with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas."

In anticipation of his trip to Syria, Carter had requested a briefing from the State Department, McCormack said. Secretary Rice tasked David Welch, her top aide on Middle East issues, to convey to Carter that the Bush Administration did not support a meeting with Hamas.

Welch spoke to Carter for about a half-hour while traveling with Rice in the Middle East two weeks ago.

McCormack said if Carter does decide to meet with leaders of Hamas, the US will not participate in the planning or help schedule any meetings. Carter will not be carrying any messages from the US, says McCormack.

I think it's really a stretch to link President Carter's actions to Obama.
This is a very dumb move by Jimmy Carter.
Maybe if the media wouldn't nitpick every single thing trying to exploit it into a story, there wouldn't be a problem. Go find some real news instead of making up stories to get off on. Jimmy Carter is not running for President.  Just because someone likes Obama doesnt mean Obama is responsible for EVERYTHING that person does.  I am sure you knew some potheads or crack heads in your day.  Does that mean you are a bad person because of that?  Get over yourselves.
If Carter goes to Hammas, he will get assassinated, and then we'll be in WWIII.
Obama get blamed for delegates that hasn't committed to his campaign, bloggers that post comments, unpaid supporters. He has to throw his race, parents and associates under the bus to please the general public...his ceiling for perfection is so high, he would never be good enough for most americans.
So Obama now gets blamed for actions of others who are not involved with the campaign in any way, shape, or form?  A guy was speeding down the street - blame Obama.  A guy robbed a gas station - blame Obama.  A deadbeat dad doesn't pay child support - blame Obama.  This is getting rediculous.  Obama is now getting blamed for things with which he isn't even remotely involved.  When did FR become a mouthpiece for Clinton?  Does Clinton have some dirt on you Chuch?  I can't believe that the media falls for the utterly rediculous "the media is unfair to me" rants of the mentally unstable, bipolar, psycho, witch that is Hillary Clinton.
Is he charging $800,000 for a speech fee like former Presidents do?  Isn't that the going rate for Presidential speeches?  Maybe to lobby for a Hamas Free Trade Agreement (HAFTA).  Ooops, wrong former President.
Why must Sen. Obama be RESPONSIBLE for every person who endorses him???  Former President Carter doesn't speak for Sen. Obama and vice versa so why should this pose a problem for Sen. Obama?  Sometimes you guys can really grasp.
Sounds as if Carter should just cancel the trip, considering that no matter what, it's going to be a problem for someone,or everyone.

Considering that he's been forewarned, and that he's not carrying ANY messages from the US, his meeting with leaders would be pointless anyway.
´Guilty by association:

.he likes you so you must like him.
same logic gives you
.some killed Jesus so all must have killed Jesus.
I hate to say it, because we all love the old guy.
But, Jimmy Carter's endorsement of ANYONE is more of a liability, than it is an asset.
Between his ill advised trip to Cuba and meetings with the Castro Government, and this planned trip to meet with HAMAS leadership, Carter is cementing his Presidential image as that of a "weak sister" who placates and gives in to terrorists.
Perhaps this is why Obama says he'll negotiate unconditionally with communists and terrorist thugs.
Neither this country, nor The Democratic Party can afford to withstand another Carter-Like Presidency.
God forbid Obama should EVER get his hands on the military....It's unfathomable.
Now I know this post will upset the ObamaNIACS on this board.
But, it IS The TRUTH, and as we all know.....
Carter should be tried for treason--Hammas is a terrorist goup--plain and simple.  Carter does Obama no favor with this action.  Don't go Carter; you'll just screw things up.
Wow.. if we are supposed to buy that Hillary can distance herself from her HUSBAND's comments, why on earth would anyone tie Carter's actions to Obama.  Give me a break.  Media bias, at its best!  Lets crucify him for everything everyone he's ever met has said and done.  Sounds fair, sounds American to me.
So, what...President Carter suggests that he might be supporting Senator Obama and suddenly a meeting with Khaled Meshal is going to be an issue for the Obama campaign?

Until the meeting happens and details of what is discussed are revealed it's all speculation.

Of course, the GOP might make this an issue since Meshal is probably one of the first guys McSame plans to blow up!
talking is better than bombing
President Carter has long had a problem with not being reelected.  He has always been a loose cannon, running around the world involving himself in things that he should be staying out of.

I wish he would concentrate on Habitat for Humanity and leave the rest of the world alone.
LOL what a non story. If Clinton claims the press is giving Obama a pass, she should read this.
Isn't Carter doing what Obama said he would do as president-communicate with our friends and enemies?
i know how it becomes a problem for obama, because the people of this country depend on the msm to tell them what they think.....just because pat buchanan says it doesnt mean its the gospel!!!

btw  can anyone tell me why tucker was taken off....its been pretty quiet!went from on twice-an-afternoon to some quick guest shot????
We don't all love the old guy.  This action by Carter is exactly the kind of wrong-headed thinking that made his administration the worst in history with 22% inflation, 12% unemployment and couldn't even manage a rescue from... gee Muslim Terrorists.  Jimmy Carter does not learn from his mistakes.  The fact that he will vote for Obama and Obama has the same amount of experience Carter had (less actually) when elected is a nice little view into the world if Obama gets elected.
Typical Andrea Mitchell venom. Why attribute anything that Carter does to Obama? But if Andrea Mitchell's bias to Clinton and her husband's to McCain, clearly the only scapegoat is Obama. KNOCK IT OFF. If this is what legitimate journalism looks like, give me a barf bag.

And why don't you print this for a change. You're getting more and more like the Chinese censors.
It's time to yank Carter's passport. Seriously, I am a Democrat but Carter needs to stop interfering in international affairs. Bush, McCain, Hillary and Obama need to make it crystal clear that former Pres. Carter does not speak for the U.S. or for them.

Obama is unelectable. All of the former losers of the party support Obama because they still seethe with jealousy of the Clintons, Bill & Hillary Clinton are the ONLY success story of the Dem party since FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt! Ted Kennedy picks all the losers, himself, Dukasis, Kerry, need I say more?

Obama's negatives are rising with the revelations about Antoin Rezko, Crown, Exelon, Ayers & Dorhn, "pastors" Wright, Moss and Meeks, Emil Jones, Odinga of Kenya, Africa (Is Odinga really Obama's cousin?) and the scariest of all AUCHI.

MSNBC needs to do investigative reporting on the Obama-Syrian born Antoin Rezko-AUCHI connection. Also, ask Obama's campaign manager David Axelrod his connecton to Rezko and Auchi. Also ask Obama supporter David Wilhelm (who is named in Rezko's criminal trial currently underway in Chicago) about his connection to Rezko and Auchi.

The voters have a right to know all about the Barack Hussein Obama (it's his name people) Auchi (who is also currently under criminal indictment) and Odinga connections. There is still much to learn about Obama.

Any ONE of these revelations would be enough to sink Obama, but combined they are lethal. Obama is simply too risky for the Dems to nominate.

Why do you think the corporate owned media relentlessly promotes Obama 24/7 while attacking Hillary 24/7? They know he's unelectable.

Hillary Clinton has already proven she can win big in the big electoral rich states that are the must wins for the Dems in November. If you can't win in states like Ohio, you cannot win the Presidency. In Ohio, Obama outspent Hillary 4 to 1 yet he won only 5 out of 88 counties, those with large black voter turnout for him, the only voter group he won.

Superdelegates, take note. Today, in Ohio polls, Hillary beats McCain by  10 points, while Obama ties or loses to McCain. I can assure you that Obama would NEVER win Ohio in the general election. The caucus wins of Obama are meaningless in a general election. No one should be so delusional to believe that a state like Utah would ever be in play for the Dems, particularly with Obama as the nominee. Hillary polls strong in all the must win states, while Obama does not. He is unelectable. Obama lacks the experience, character and good judgment essential to a President.

*VOTE SMART! VOTE PATRIOTIC! VOTE HILLARY CLINTON!*
Why is the Media trying to associate Carter with Obama. We know he was thinking of endorsing Obama, but hasn't so what's the hype?
So... a quick question... if Obama is responsible for everyone who has endorsed him... does this make Clinton responsible for everyone who has endorsed her?

If so... she has to answer to Client #9 a.k.a. Spitzer and to Slick Willy and his philandering past or Ferraro and her race-baiting...

I understand why this might be an issue, but in all seriousness, we should stop looking at what surrogates do, unless they are actually speaking or representing the candidates.

This election is about the candidates, their policies and their personalities. We already elected Bill and Jimmy to their terms, lets focus on the next President not a couple of people trying to jump back into the spotlight.
Andrea, we all know that you're a Clintonite so are you going to play the "see what sticks" game the same as she???  You're so transparent.
Well isn't that nice Carter meeting with the US enemies.

isn't that the same thing Obama wants to do?

No wonder Carter wants to endorse Obama.

Clinton 08
Carter is not trusted by Jewish Americans.  He supports Obama and meets with Hamas.  Obama does not comment on Carter's support or the meeting.  Connect the dots . . . I'm Jewish, and a Clinton supporter, but will gladly support Obama if he gets the nomination.  This is a dangerous situation for him.  He should be careful . . .
I agree with decision of our Former President to meet who so ever he wants to meet to address the root causes[es] of the problems in the region. I am sure that presedent carter has best interest of USA in his mind to bring the solutions to area before the current president will leave the office as planned
Bush certainly is not for freedom. He thinks he can interfere with the itinerary of a former President of the US. Remember how the hostages were finally brought home from Iran after months, and months? Jesse Jackson simply went over there, talked to the captors, and convinced them to let the captives go. What's so terrible about trying to reason with people?

Bush is a dismal failure when it comes to foreign policy. I welcome a former President, whom I trust, to go over there and have a discussion. I believe God will be with him. Who is Bush, with his F- Presidential performance to dictate what will, and will not be helpful. If Bush is against it, it can't be all bad.

Pulling for Obama '08
And Mark Penn, Hillary's chief strategist,  went to Colombia to support a trade deal that Hillary supposedly opposes, so that means Hillary really supports it then, if we use the same logic.  Grow up media folks!!
We should pass a law that says as American we will only talk to the British, Australians, French (if they agree), China (because they own us) and the Saudi's (because they'll sell us oil cheap for letting them off of the hook for 9/11 and because we sell them our most advances weapons and fighter jets).

The rest of the world we can just bully.

Isn't not carrying an official U.S. government message good enough.  Hell there are several American groups labeled terrorists by the Bush regime.
Gee, I actually endorse this meeting.  Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.  The current actions of the U.S. sure aren't working. Maybe actually try to be a peacemaker instead of imposing our military will on others...
Pete: Might as well be. Meshal endorses Obama. Meanwhile, out in Tinseltown, another of these Obamaite black ''reverands'',Lee,in this case, slips his bridle and shocks everyone including the mayor of LA,Villgarosa, in even this most liberal of audiences by launching into an anti-Semitic tirade blaming,of course, the ''Jews'',for all that is wrong with black America.

Al JAZEERA Apr.09,2008.
Jimmy Carter, 2008!!!!The only sensible candidate.
Carter is just Carter.  Guess he can do what he wants to.  He can endorse (or almost endorse Obama if he want too) . Obama plans to meet with everyone.  Friends and foes alike. Didn't he say that??

Obama is such a lightweight trying so hard to be a heavyweight.  He is in way over his head. Obama, don't sink our country because you can't swim.
Please, please......I agree that Obama cannot be  responsible for what a person does that did not official or unofficially endorse him. Former President Carter, definately has a mind of his own.

Let us not forget where Bill Clinton got some of his money from his IRS tax returns.

We are carrying this to the extreme.
I think it's really a stretch to link President Carter's actions to Obama.
******
End Game: If there's no problem, they why is Barry ducking the endorsement as the article says? Don't see why Barry would be upset with the visit, though; he's said he'll go out and talk to all the "bad guys" in the world.

Lee Holmes, some don't know, too, that Rev Meeks, one of Barry's "spiritual advisors" said that it was the "Hollywood Jews" who brought us Brokeback Mountain.  Nice folks Barry hangs around, isn't it?
Obama heard the word "trip" and thought fondly back to his troubled youth when he and his boys used to "trip" on you know what...
What will meeting with Hamas hurt? Are they terrorist because they are fighting for the rights of the victimized Palestinians. I agree with Obama, diplomacy is meeting with your enemies as well as your allies.
I don't understand why Jimmy Carter's decisions is being linked to  what Obama can do for this country. Jimmy carter is jimmy carter and Obama is obama. Carter does not have influence on Obama. I think, people should think through it, before they judge what someone will/can do in the future.
Its ridiculous that Obama is being held responsible for everything his supporters do. THIS IS INSANE!
bombing is better than talking, Annihilation of the enemy and turning the middli east especially Iran into a parking lot would be a whole lot better . Forget about Osama Obama the guy is a total looser.

and from the article
"Carter already has been criticized by some Jewish groups for his past criticism of Israeli policy."

Oh dear Michael you sound scared! Why is it so unthinkable to criticize Israels treatment (or American policy for that matter)of the Palestineans? In this country we take sides-and we all better be on Israels side or else!

Jimmy Carter wrote an excellent book entitled "Palestine; Peace not Aparthied" (or something like that. Did you read it Michael? My dear jewish mentor and practically second mother refuses to even look at it so I understand the bias.

Understanding starts with communication. Listen. Learn. Jimmy Carter is a wonderfull human being and he will do as he pleases.

What has this got to do with Obama!
bombing is better than talking, Annihilation of the enemy and turning the middli east especially Iran into a parking lot would be a whole lot better . Forget about Osama Obama the guy is a total looser.
Lee Holmes:
Provide the link to the April 9th Al Jazeera article you referenced. I review that site every day, along with CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC BBC, Google News AND Fox, and I missed it. So where is it?
The media must stop all these nonsence, after all
President Carter negociated $5Billion yearly payout
Aid to Isreal and $2Billion to Egypt. Carter is a Man
of peace and therefore the media should not interfer
with the good work of the Ex-President who is going to tell Hammas to stop the violence against Isreal and for them also stop making violent pupet
shows for their children , let no one attempt to tie
Carter's visit to this election, Senator Obama is runing for President and not Ex-President Jimmy Carter,Senator Obama cannot control what people do,
America is the land of the bold and the free. GOD BlESS AMERICA
The whole point of diplomacy is to be able to talk to those who oppose you - so that differences can be settled over a table instead of overhead, with missiles whistling by each other.

Carter is not an agent of the federal government.  He can go where he wants, when he wants, and talk with whomever he wants.  If he meets with Hamas, so what?  He's not a government functionary.

Perhaps someone like Carter might be able to do in Palestine what George Mitchell did in Northern Ireland.  Lord knows none of the politicians in power now have any credibility in the Middle East.  Carter's traveled the world as a respected humanitarian since leaving office.

As for Carter causing Obama problems - if people are willing to give HRC a pass for her husband being PAID to lobby for a trade agreement with Colombia just because she says she's opposed, then I fail to understand Obama having a problem because someone who hasn't even endorsed him takes an unpaid foreign meeting.
